Wisconsin forward Tyler Wahl emotional after final collegiate game

Wisconsin forward Tyler Wahl’s college career came to an end with the team’s 72-61 NCAA Tournament round of 64 loss to James Madison Friday night.

Wahl finished with just five points on 1/5 from the floor and 3/6 from the free throw line. It was an unfortunate ending to a decorated collegiate career, and a performance that fell far short of his standard as a player.

Wisconsin does return almost every key contributor for 2024-25, plus adds a 2024 class headlined by top point guard Daniel Freitag. But Wahl’s departure should be felt in the team’s rotation next season.

The five-year college veteran was understandably emotional after Friday’s loss to James Madison. Some of the on-site beat writers shared a glimpse at that postgame scene:

Wisconsin releases tribute for Tyler Wahl’s decorated career

Wisconsin basketball released a tribute video for Tyler Wahl Friday afternoon as he enters the final weeks of his decorated collegiate career.

The program celebrated Wahl on his senior night last Thursday, a night which saw the Badgers bounce back with a much-needed 78-66 win over Rutgers. The veteran totaled just three points, four steals and six rebounds during the contest, though was thankfully able to celebrate a victory.

Wahl now has one regular season game remaining before the Big Ten and NCAA Tournaments. The Badgers have a real chance to make a deep run, though only will do so if the veteran forward is playing his best basketball.

Earlier this week we looked at Wahl’s decorated career through photos, and where the long-time Badger ranks on the program’s all-time leaderboards.

Here, now, is Wisconsin’s tribute video for the Badger veteran.

PHOTOS: Wisconsin forward Tyler Wahl through the years

What kind of professional basketball career will Tyler Wahl have?

Wisconsin senior forward Tyler Wahl will play his last home game at the Kohl Center on Thursday night.

Wahl is wrapping up his fifth year of college basketball, his final year of eligibility, as the Badgers move into postseason play.

The former three-star recruit has been a model of consistency since becoming a starter during the 2021-22 season. Since then, he’s averaged 11.4, 11.3 and 11.8 points per game respectively, while adding 5.9, 6.3 and 5.8 rebounds per game as well. He’s never developed into a true shooting threat, but his inside game has remained steady since he arrived in Madison in 2019.

Takeaways from Wisconsin’s crushing loss to No. 13 Illinois

What are your takeaways from the loss to Illinois?

Wisconsin basketball continued its slide Saturday afternoon with a 91-83 loss to No. 13 Illinois.

Reciting the Badgers’ struggles since the start of February is like a broken record at this point. The team has lost seven of its last nine, with each loss feeling more crushing than the last.

The road will not get much easier for Greg Gard’s team. Up next is a home matchup with Rutgers, before a season-ending trip to West Lafayette, Indiana, to face No. 3 Purdue. Then comes the Big Ten and NCAA Tournaments. It doesn’t take a genius to know Wisconsin needs to step up its game to have any hope at a deep run.

Before we get to that, here are our takeaways from the loss to Illinois:

In last night’s win over Michigan State, Tyler Wahl joined an elite Wisconsin group

The Badger forward reaches the century mark

With Wisconsin’s 16th win of the season and a season sweep of Michigan State, Tyler Wahl earned his 100th win as a member of the Badgers. There have been very few Wisconsin players in history that have reached the century mark, as the Minnesota native is just one of seven Badgers all-time to accomplish the feat.

He joins an elite group that includes former Wooden Award winner Frank Kaminsky, his former teammate Brad Davison and several other Badger greats:

Wahl has a chance to add to his total next week as the Badgers visit Nebraska then have a showdown looming against Purdue at home.

WATCH: Badgers radio analyst has his takeaways from loss to Providence

Brian Butch has his takeaways

The Badgers men’s basketball team fell to Providence on Tuesday night, losing to the Friars by a score of 72-59. Radio analyst and all-time Wisconsin legend Brian Butch had his takeaways.

Amongst his takeaways, he outlined the fact that the Badgers struggled to produce in the paint, most notably forwards Tyler Wahl (six points) and Steven Crowl (four points) only combined for 10 points.

One of Butch’s positives from the game was the play of freshman guard John Blackwell, who added 11 points and five rebounds in the loss.

Wisconsin will take on Robert Morris on Friday night at 6PM from the Kohl Center.

Greg Gard was not happy last night after Wisconsin’s loss to Providence

Greg Gard was not happy list night after Wisconsin’s loss to Providence

Wisconsin fell 72-59 to Providence last night to drop to 1-2 on the young season.

A road game at Providence is never an easy task, though the Friars did see coaching and roster turnover this offseason. It wasn’t necessarily the loss that angered many, including Wisconsin head coach Greg Gard. It was more how the loss happened.

The Badgers shot only 33.9% from the floor, 25% from three, and had no answer for the Providence offensive attack.

Wisconsin’s big men Steven Crowl and Tyler Wahl, especially, had maybe the worst showing of their careers. Crowl finished with 4 points on 1/5 shooting with 6 rebounds, 2 assists and 2 turnovers. Wahl, meanwhile, had 6 points on 3/9 shooting with 5 rebounds, 2 steals and 2 turnovers.

Gard did not mince words about the team’s effort after the contest:

WATCH: The best highlights from Wisconsin basketball’s 105-76 win vs Arkansas State

Wisconsin basketball started its season strong last night with a 105-76 win over Arkansas State.

The Badgers broke a Kohl Center record with 105 points, and finished with the 12th-highest-scoring game in program history.

The biggest story coming out of the night is the team’s depth. 12 players found the stat sheet and 10 of them played 12 minutes or more.

Chucky Hepburn led the way with 20 points, six assists and three steals, transfer guard A.J. Storr added 15 points, Max Klesmit had 14 points and true freshman John Blackwell came off the bench to tally 12 points and four rebounds.

The top-end players are there with Hepburn, Storr, Tyler Wahl and Steven Crowl. This team also appears to have another 8-10 players that can contribute when needed. It’s an impressive group.

Here are the best highlights from last night’s record-breaking win:

Ranking the Top-10 Big Ten players heading into the basketball season

Ranking the top 10 players in the Big Ten entering the college basketball season.

The long-awaited 2023-24 college basketball season begins today, and the Big Ten’s slate of games features 10 of the conference’s teams in action. Iowa, Indiana, Maryland and Michigan will have to wait one more day.

The Big Ten does not lack star power as the conference boasts the reigning national player of the year in Purdue’s Zach Edey as well as a bunch of premier guards. As we all know, guard play dominates college basketball, especially in March.

Before the games tip off this evening, we take a look at the top 10 Big Ten players. Are any freshmen ranked? Does any supplant Edey as number one?

Honorable mentions (in no particular order): Bruce Thorton (Ohio State), Keisei Tominaga (Nebraska), Mackenzie Mgbako (Indiana), Jamison Battle (Ohio State), Tyler Wahl (Wisconsin), Coleman Hawkins (Illinois), Chucky Hepburn (Wisconsin).

Tyler Wahl has returned to Madison for a fifth season, coming in at number six on the Big Ten analyst’s list. The 6-foot-9 forward averaged 11.3 points per game and a career-high 6.3 rebounds while appearing in 32 games, all of which he started.

Wahl joins teammates Chucky Hepburn (15) and Connor Essegian (16) within Katz’s top 22 player countdown.

Wisconsin will have their entire starting lineup back from last year while also adding guard AJ Storr from St. John’s and freshman big man Nolan Winter, amongst others.
