On this day: Wisconsin clinches second Big Ten Tournament title

Captained by big man Brian Butch, Trevon Hughes and Marcus Landry, Wisconsin clinched its second Big Ten Tournament win in school history on March 16, 2008.

Held at Conseco Fieldhouse in Indianapolis, the Badgers entered the tournament with a 16-2 conference mark and No. 6 overall in the 2008 AP Poll, four spots higher than their last tournament win in 2004.

Five Badgers averaged eight or more points per game throughout the regular season. NBA veterans John Leuer and Greg Stiemsma, who combined to average 6.4 points per appearance, came off the bench for Bo Ryan’s squad.

As the No. 1 seed in the conference tournament, Wisconsin throttled the University of Michigan 51-34 in its quarterfinal game. With three Big Ten All-Defensive Team members scattered throughout the rotation, UW held Michigan to 20% from the field and 18 points per half. Junior forward Joe Krabbenhoft led all scorers with 12 points.

UW followed its explosive opening performance with a two-tally win against Michigan. Harris, the tournament’s Most Outstanding Player, scored eight of his 21 points in the final 2:56 of action. Wilkinson, Wisconsin’s most dependable big man, dropped 20 and corralled nine boards.

In its following contest, the Badgers orchestrated a 12-point comeback in the second half to steal a win from Tom Izzo’s Michigan State Spartans. Michael Flowers, an excellent two-way guard, nailed a game-winning layup with 28 ticks to spare before the final buzzer.

The Badgers advanced to the championship game and plowed through the tournament’s No. 10 seed, the University of Illinois, by 13 points.

With the win, Wisconsin captured its second Big Ten Tournament victory in program history and automatically clinched a berth in the NCAA Tournament. Junior Marcus Landry was named the Big Ten Tournament’s Most Outstanding Player.

Brian Butch has his takeaways

The Badgers men’s basketball team fell to Providence on Tuesday night, losing to the Friars by a score of 72-59. Radio analyst and all-time Wisconsin legend Brian Butch had his takeaways.

Amongst his takeaways, he outlined the fact that the Badgers struggled to produce in the paint, most notably forwards Tyler Wahl (six points) and Steven Crowl (four points) only combined for 10 points.

One of Butch’s positives from the game was the play of freshman guard John Blackwell, who added 11 points and five rebounds in the loss.

Wisconsin will take on Robert Morris on Friday night at 6PM from the Kohl Center.

Wisconsin basketball will have a new analyst on the radio broadcast this season

The Badgers name a former Wisconsin big to the broadcast team

A familiar name is returning to the Wisconsin basketball sidelines, this time with a microphone in hand. Wisconsin has officially named Brian Butch, a former First-Team All-Big Ten performer as a Badger big man, as their analyst on the broadcast.

Butch’s career has taken him all over the game and the world, from an international professional career as a player to three seasons as an assistant coach for the Wisconsin Herd in the NBA G-League.

As a Badger, Butch was a First-Team All-Big Ten player during the 2008 season, and Wisconsin Mr. Basketball in high school in 2003. A Badger State basketball legend will join Matt Lepay on the call this season:

After Wednesday’s win over Iowa, Wisconsin welcomed back a familiar face to the locker room. Brian Butch, who was a Badger big man from 2004-08, returned to tell Wisconsin players just how much it means to be a Badger.

He was a first-team All-Big Ten selection as a senior in 2008. He went on to a long professional career overseas and is the radio color commentator for the Wisconsin Herd, the Badger State’s G-League team.

Butch was last night’s honorary captain during Wisconsin’s win. Here is a look at his postgame speech after a needed win for the Badgers over Iowa:

How to watch: Wisconsin basketball vs. Rutgers

How to watch, listen and stream Wisconsin basketball against the Rutgers Scarlet Knights:

On Saturday afternoon, the No. 14-ranked Wisconsin Badgers will host the Rutgers Scarlet Knights at the Kohl Center for the first time this season.

The Scarlet Knights are a team on the rise in the Big Ten, after upsetting Michigan State and Ohio State in their last two games. A matchup to keep an eye on will be between Rutgers’ second-leading scorer Geo Baker, who exploded for 25 points against Michigan State, and Wisconsin point guard Chucky Hepburn.

If the Badgers can keep the scoring of Baker and Rutgers’ forward Ron Harper Jr. in check, Wisconsin should be in good shape to close out their 20th win of the season with over a month left to play.
