Don’t misunderstand the Broncos’ 2025 plan for running back

Sean Payton uses a running back committee, but that doesn’t mean the Broncos won’t make a splash at the position in 2025.

During his end-of-season press conference earlier this week, Denver Broncos coach Sean Payton was asked if the team needed a bell-cow running back.

Payton rejected the notion of an every-down workhorse running back, noting that he — and most teams — use multiple backs.

“I understand the committee,” Payton said. “I’m used to having two. We’re going to have more than just one back. We’re going to stack that position group. It’s too hard in our league to play with just one, rarely does a team do it. Occasionally it happens. Certainly, we’ll have a chance to evaluate when we get to the offseason evaluation process where we feel like we are at with each position, certainly that’s an important position.

“I’m not ready to today give you our must-needs and wants. We’re two weeks away, and even two weeks from now, I’m still not going to give them to you. We’ll go through that process, and we’ll look closely at what we think we still need, what we have to have and then what we want to have. That only comes after evaluating our own roster. We’re just not there yet.”

Some fans and pundits have interpreted Payton’s comments as a sign that Denver won’t target a big-name running back in 2025. That interpretation seems flawed, as Markus Boggs of theBPAshow pointed out on Twitter/X:

Payton has utilized multiple running backs throughout his career, but that doesn’t rule out the possibility of also having a star RB1, such as Alvin Kamara.

The Broncos have four running backs under contract for 2025 — Jaleel McLaughlin, Audric Estime, Tyler Badie and Blake Watson. None of them are clearly RB1 caliber, so the team will likely add to the position this spring.

Despite Payton’s comments about using a committee approach, it would not be surprising to see Denver go after a top RB in the NFL draft, perhaps even Ashton Jeanty. Fans should not misunderstand the Broncos’ approach. Using multiple RBs does not rule out the possibility of making a big RB splash in 2025.

Broncos make 3 roster moves; Bills elevate 2 ex-Denver players

The Broncos activated RB Tyler Badie (back), elevated OL Nick Gargiulo from the practice squad, and placed OL Frank Crum on the NFI list.

The Denver Broncos made three roster moves on Saturday ahead of their Wild Card playoff game against the Buffalo Bills on Sunday.

First, the Broncos elevated running back Tyler Badie (back) from injured reserve to the 53-man roster. Badie had a Jan. 14 deadline to return from IR. He rushed 11 times for 86 yards in three games earlier this season.

To make room for Badie on the active roster, Denver placed backup offensive lineman Frank Crum on the non-football injury (NFI) list. Crum missed the last two weeks of practice with an undisclosed illness.

In a third and final move, the Broncos elevated offensive lineman Nick Gargiulo from the practice squad to the game-day roster. Gargiulo will be eligible to play against the Bills on Sunday and then revert back to the practice squad on Monday.

Buffalo, meanwhile, elevated safety Kareem Jackson and wide receiver Jalen Virgil — two former Denver players — from the practice squad to the game-day roster on Saturday. Both players are now available to play Sunday.

Broncos not expected to activate RB Tyler Badie from IR before deadline

Barring an injury at running back, the Broncos are not expected to activate Tyler Badie from IR before his 21-day return window closes.

The Denver Broncos are not expected to activate running back Tyler Badie (back) from injured reserve before his return deadline expires, according to multiple reports.

Badie is “fully healthy,” according to the Denver Gazette‘s Chris Tomasson, but the Broncos have a full backfield with Javonte Williams, Jaleel McLaughlin, Audric Estime and Blake Watson all on the 53-man roster.

Barring an injury at the running back position, Denver is not expected to activate Badie from IR before his Jan. 14 deadline to return expires.

The Broncos previously brought back six players from injury lists this fall. Since-traded pass rusher Baron Browning, offensive tackle, Mike McGlinchey, cornerback Damarri Mathis, running back Audric Estime and center Luke Wattenberg returned from IR earlier this season. Denver also activated linebacker Drew Sanders from the physically unable to perform list.

The Broncos opted to cut wide receiver Josh Reynolds when his IR window was closing, and the team chose to keep safety Delarrin Turner-Yell on the PUP list for the rest of the season.

Broncos eligible to return from IR

  1. RB Tyler Badie: Deadline to return: Jan. 14

The Broncos also have two players — linebacker Alex Singleton (ACL) and offensive lineman Quinn Bailey (ankle) — who are on season-ending IR.

Broncos rule out RB, elevate DL ahead of Chiefs game

The Broncos ruled out RB Tyler Badie (back) and elevated DL Matt Henningsen from the practice squad to the game-day roster for Week 18.

The Denver Broncos have ruled out running back Tyler Badie (back) and elevated defensive lineman Matt Henningsen from the practice squad ahead of Sunday’s regular season finale against the Kansas City Chiefs.

Tyler Baide returned to practice last week, starting his 21-day window to return from injured reserve. If Badie is not activated to the 53-man roster by Jan. 14, he will remain on IR for the rest of Denver’s season.

Meanwhile, Henningsen has joined the team’s game-day roster for Week 18. Players can be elevated from the practice squad to the game-day roster up to three times during the season without having to clear waivers to return to the practice squad. Henningsen will revert back to the practice squad on Monday.

Sunday’s game will be regionally televised on CBS (view the TV map). With the Chiefs resting starters, the Broncos are considered favorites in Week 18. Denver can clinch a spot in the NFL playoffs with a win.

Ex-Mizzou stars may not play in Chiefs’ Week 18 matchup vs. Broncos

Ex-Mizzou stars Nick Bolton and Tyler Badie may not see the field during the Kansas City #Chiefs’ Week 18 matchup against the Denver #Broncos.

The Kansas City Chiefs and Denver Broncos will face off in a highly anticipated regular-season finale at Mile High Stadium on January 5.

Kansas City is expected to rest its starters for the Week 18 matchup after locking up the AFC’s No. 1 playoff seed on Christmas Day, but the Broncos are still endeavoring to punch their ticket to the postseason with a win over the defending Super Bowl champions.

Both teams host legendary Missouri Tigers stars on their rosters, but Mizzou fans may not get to see them on the field when the Chiefs face off against Denver on Sunday.

Veteran linebacker Nick Bolton, who played for the Tigers from 2018 until 2020, was listed on Kansas City’s injury report after missing practice on Wednesday and Thursday due to a coaching decision. Though he was a full participant in drills on Friday, he was officially designated as doubtful for Week 18.

Third-year running back Tyler Badie, who made a name for himself as Mizzou’s leading rusher in 2021, was listed on the Broncos’ injury report due to his back and is officially designated as questionable for Sunday’s game.

Recapping the roster moves Broncos made ahead of Bengals game

The Broncos did some roster shuffling ahead of their game against the Bengals.

Story update: After this post was published, the Broncos ruled out RB Tyler Badie (back) for Week 17 and elevated wide receiver David Sills from the practice squad to the game-day roster. See our original post below.

The Denver Broncos made a few transactions leading up to Saturday’s game against the Cincinnati Bengals.

The moves started on Tuesday when the Broncos waived veteran cornerback Levi Wallace from the active roster. That cut was made to make room for running back Blake Watson to be promoted from the practice squad to the 53-man roster.

Elsewhere at running back, Tyler Badie (back) was designated to return from injured reserve on Tuesday. Badie now has a 21-day window to be activated from IR to the 53-man roster.

Wallace has since cleared waivers and is now a free agent. It remains to be seen if he will return on the practice squad.

More moves could be on the way for Denver later this week. The Broncos might not be done shuffling the practice squad, and two practice squad players can be elevated to the game-day roster each week.

With more moves potentially still on the way, here’s the quick list of transactions Denver has made so far ahead of the Bengals game.

  1. Cut CB Levi Wallace from active roster
  2. Promoted RB Blake Watson to active roster
  3. Designated RB Tyler Badie to return from IR

Saturday’s game will be televised on NFL Network. The Broncos need one more win (or tie) to clinch a spot in the NFL playoffs.

Broncos’ updated 17-player practice squad with new linebacker

After adding K.J. Cloyd, here’s a look at the Broncos’ updated 17-player practice squad.

After losing linebacker Kwon Alexander to the Detroit Lions, the Denver Broncos filled his former spot on the practice squad by signing K.J. Cloyd on Tuesday.

The NFL’s standard practice squad size limit is 16 players, but there’s an exception that allows an extra international player to not count against the limit. For Denver, Australian tight end Thomas Yassmin is an exception, giving the Broncos a 17-player practice squad.

So here’s the full list of 17 players on the squad after the recent moves.

Broncos 17-player practice squad

  1. RB Blake Watson
  2. WR Michael Bandy
  3. WR David Sills
  4. WR A.T. Perry
  5. TE Donald Parham
  6. TE Thomas Yassmin

  13. LB K.J. Cloyd
  14. CB Reese Taylor
  15. DB Quinton Newsome
  16. DB Tanner McCalister
  17. DB Keidron Smith

Broncos will have to make a Josh Reynolds decision this week

The Broncos have to make a decision on WR Josh Reynolds this week.

The Denver Broncos will have to make a roster decision soon.

After activating linebacker Drew Sanders (Achilles) from the physically unable to perform list last week, the Broncos now need to make a decision on wide receiver Josh Reynolds (finger).

If Reynolds is not activated from injured reserve by Wednesday, he will remain on IR for the rest of the season.

Elsewhere on the IR front, running back Tyler Badie (back) is yet to return to practice. Once he returns to practice, Badie will have a 21-day window to return to the 53-man roster.

Here’s a look at the team’s IR/PUP players eligible to return going into Week 14.

Broncos eligible to return from IR/PUP

  1. WR Josh Reynolds: Deadline to return is Dec. 4
  2. RB Tyler Badie: Eligible to return to practice

The Broncos also have two players — linebacker Alex Singleton (ACL) and offensive lineman Quinn Bailey (ankle) — who are on season-ending IR.
