Panthers No. 113 pick: Scouting report for CB Troy Pride Jr.

Panthers No. 113 pick: Scouting report for CB Troy Pride Jr.

[jwplayer 8Nkf64Tz]

The Panthers finally addressed the cornerback position with the No. 113 overall selection in the draft. Notre Dame’s Troy Pride Jr. is a high character individual who had tremendous Senior Bowl and combine showings.

Let’s take a look at Pride’s scouting report and see how he can help turn around Carolina’s secondary.

Strengths:

Pride brings good size to the table as he measured in at 5-foot-11, 193 pounds at the combine. He ran a 4.4 second forty yard dash, jumped 35.5 inches in the vertical and clocked a 6.94 in the three cone. He is an excellent athlete who plays with very fluid hips in coverage and quick footwork. He is solid in man and zone coverage and he has a quick trigger to close on the ball and good ball skills at the catch point. Pride has smooth feet and is able to flip his hips quite nicely and transition into the hip pocket of receivers.

Pride has good enough length to be able to play on the outside, but would be most effective at nickel. With his smooth footwork and tremendous short yardage quickness/agility, he would be a plug and play starter at nickel.

Weaknesses:

Pride displays decent tackling ability, but will need to improve on his open field tackling in space. He also gets a bit grabby at the tail end of routes near the catch point, so defensive coordinator Phil Snow and his staff will have to break that habit.

Fit with the Panthers:

Carolina needed a corner badly and got a strong one here with Pride. He can bring versatility at either outside or nickel corner and should be able to start Week 1. This is another tremendous pick for the Panthers, as they got one of the best players available at a position of need

Let’s take a look at his college tape to learn more.

The Carolina Panthers continued to rebuild on defense with their fourth-round pick in the 2020 NFL draft. With the No. 113 overall selection, they took Notre Dame cornerback Troy Pride Jr., filling a massive hole on the back end of their defense.

Pride was a standout at the Senior Bowl this year and recorded the fifth-fastest 40-yard dash among cornerbacks.

Let’s take a look at his college tape to learn more.

Panthers pick Notre Dame CB Troy Pride Jr. at No. 113 overall

With the No. 113 pick in the 2020 NFL draft, the team selected Troy Pride Jr. from Notre Dame.

The Panthers finally got a cornerback.

With the No. 113 pick in the 2020 NFL draft, the team selected Troy Pride Jr. from Notre Dame.

Pride (5-foot-11, 193 pounds) offers plenty of speed. At the NFL combine, he ran a 4.4 second 40-yard dash, one of the best times in a deep class of cornerbacks.  Despite not getting much playing time his first two years at Notre Dame, he finished his college career with four interceptions and 18 pass breakups.

Pride has some rather large cleats to fill. He projects as the team’s new starting outside cornerback on the other side of Donte Jackson, a role previously held by James Bradberry and Josh Norman.

Carolina may not be done with cornerbacks, yet. They still need to replace Javien Elliott in the slot.

2020 NFL Draft: 6 Day 3 targets for the New York Jets

Jets Wire takes a look at six potential targets for the Jets on day three of the draft.

It’s going to be a busy Saturday afternoon for Jets general manager Joe Douglas.

The Jets now have six selections on day three of the draft after trading their final pick of the third round to the New England Patriots in exchange for two fourth-round selections (picks Nos. 125 and 129). New York also holds a pick in the fifth (No. 158), sixth (No. 191) and seventh (No. 211) rounds.

Fortunately for Douglas and the Jets, there is a boatload of talented prospects still on the board. Who should New York focus on in the final day of the draft? Let’s take a look.

Jacob Eason, Washington

Troy Wayrynen-USA TODAY Sports

Seeing a quarterback on this list might come as somewhat of a surprise due to Sam Darnold’s presence, but the Jets are in need of a competent backup.

David Fales might be familiar with Adam Gase’s offense, but that does not mean he is the best option to relieve Darnold in the event of an injury. Eason has a good arm and a high football I.Q., making him an attractive backup quarterback option for New York if it chooses to target one on day three.

Jets Wire’s 2020 NFL Mock Draft 5.0: Andrew Thomas to New York in final 7-round prediction

Jets Wire’s final mock draft of the year has New York landing Georgia offensive tackle Andrew Thomas at No. 11.

After months of anticipation, it’s finally draft day.

With the 2020 NFL Draft less than 24 hours away, we at the Jets Wire have one last mock ready to go. This projection focuses on the Jets and what they can do through all seven rounds, as well as a look at how the entire first round could play out.

The Jets find themselves in an interesting position with the 11th pick. At this point, they seem destined to take a tackle or a receiver. What they do in the first round may telegraph their plans for the rest of the draft.

In this mock draft, New York adds protection for Sam Darnold, two big-bodied weapons at wide receiver, a potential starting EDGE and cornerback, Le’Veon Bell’s backup and a late-round defensive line flier.

Let’s take a look at who we think the Jets could take in Douglas’ first draft as the team’s general manager in Jets Wire’s fifth and final mock.

First Round

Bryan Lynn-USA TODAY Sports

1. Cincinnati Bengals — Joe Burrow | QB | LSU

2. Washington Redskins — Chase Young | DE | Ohio State

3. Detroit Lions — Jeff Okudah | CB | Ohio State

4. New York Giants — Mekhi Becton | OT | Louisville

5. Miami Dolphins — Justin Herbert | QB | Oregon

6. Los Angeles Chargers — Tua Tagovailoa | QB | Alabama

7. Carolina Panthers — Isaiah Simmons | OLB | Clemson

8. Arizona Cardinals — Tristan Wirfs | OL | Iowa

9. Jacksonville Jaguars — Derrick Brown | DL | Auburn

10. Cleveland Browns — Jedrick Wills Jr. | OT | Alabama

11. New York Jets — Andrew Thomas | OT | Georgia

With Becton, Wirfs and Wills Jr. off the board, Thomas becomes the logical selection for the Jets at No. 11. He might not come with the hype that the other three had throughout draft season, but Thomas is arguably the most-pro ready tackle of the bunch. He is a plug-and-play starter for New York and has the potential to become a leader in the locker room from day one.

12. Las Vegas Raiders — CeeDee Lamb | WR | Oklahoma

13. San Francisco 49ers (via IND) — Jerry Jeudy | WR | Alabama

14. Tampa Bay Buccaneers — Josh Jones | OT | Houston

15. Denver Broncos — Henry Ruggs II | WR | Alabama

16. Atlanta Falcons — CJ Henderson | CB | Florida

17. Dallas Cowboys — K’Lavon Chaisson | EDGE | LSU

18. Miami Dolphins (via PITT) — Javon Kinlaw | DL | South Carolina

19. Las Vegas Raiders (via CHI) — Patrick Queen | LB | LSU

20. Jacksonville Jaguars (via LAR) — Austin Jackson | OT | USC

21. Philadelphia Eagles — Justin Jefferson | WR | LSU

22. Minnesota Vikings (via BUF) — Jeff Gladney | CB | TCU

23. New England Patriots — Yetur Gross-Matos | DE | Penn State

24. New Orleans Saints — Jordan Love | QB | Utah State

25. Minnesota Vikings — A.J. Epenesa — EDGE | Iowa

26. Miami Dolphins (via HOU) — Isaiah Wilson | OT | Georgia

27. Seattle Seahawks — Xavier McKinney | S | Alabama

28. Baltimore Ravens — Kenneth Murray | LB | Oklahoma

29. Tennessee Titans — Zach Baun | EDGE | Wisconsin

30. Green Bay Packers — Denzel Mims | WR | Baylor

31. San Francisco 49ers — Jaylon Johnson | CB | Utah

32. Kansas City Chiefs — Trevon Diggs | CB | Alabama

5 cornerbacks that Bears could target in 2020 NFL Draft

The Bears have a starting CB spot up for grabs, and GM Ryan Pace would serve well to look at this year’s talented cornerback class.

While defense isn’t the concern with the Chicago Bears, there are two starting jobs that need to be filled in the defensive backfield. Following the release of Prince Amukamara this offseason, the Bears have a vacant cornerback spot opposite Pro Bowler Kyle Fuller.

While the Bears have some guys on the roster that will compete for the starting job, including Kevin Toliver and newcomers Tre Roberson and Artie Burns. But general manager Ryan Pace would serve well to look at this year’s talented cornerback class.

Let’s take a look at five cornerbacks Chicago could target in the NFL Draft:

1. Damon Arnette, Ohio State

Brian Spurlock-USA TODAY Sports

While Ohio State cornerback Jeff Okudah has everyone talking, it’s his teammate Damon Arnette that’s also gotten some attention. Arnette’s physicality helps him in run support, and he succeeds in press coverage. Arnette is an instinctive and versatile cornerback that could complement Fuller in the secondary, as well as contribute on special teams.

2020 NFL Draft: A CB in every round for the Philadelphia Eagles

2020 NFL Draft: A CB in every round for the Philadelphia Eagles

The 2020 NFL draft is just two weeks away and although he Philadelphia Eagles landed Darius Slay, the Birds will likely address the cornerback position with one of their remaining eight picks.

The Eagles don’t have a pick in every round but in case of some wheeling and dealing, we decided to project one cornerback from every round that the Eagles could target.

***

Round 1: Trevon Diggs, Alabama

The younger brother of Bills star Stefon Diggs, the former Crimson Tide star was a projected top-15 pick and could slip to the late first-round or early second. Diggs finished his junior season with 37 tackles, three interceptions, eight passes defended, two fumble recoveries and two defensive touchdowns.

He’s not afraid of the bright lights or the big moment and could be just what the doctor ordered if the Eagles go cornerback in Round 1.

2020 NFL Draft: The 7 best cornerbacks the Jets should target

Jets Wire takes a look at six of the top cornerbacks in the 2020 NFL draft that the Jets should target with picks No. 48, No. 68 or No. 79.

Cornerback is a position of need that the Jets will have to address in the draft.

Joe Douglas filled two starting spots with Brian Poole and Pierre Desir, but the Jets will need to take an outside cornerback on Day 2 of the draft, assuming they take a tackle or receiver in the first round. That player will compete with Blessaun Austin for the open starting spot on the outside.

So, which top cornerbacks should the Jets target between picks Nos. 48, 68 and 79? Let’s take a look at the best players to keep an eye on.

Trevon Diggs, Alabama

(Derick E. Hingle-USA TODAY Sports)

The brother of Bills wide receiver Stefon Diggs, Trevon Diggs lines up on the opposite side of the ball. If Gang Green elects to take Diggs with the 48th pick, he could be covering his brother two times a season.

Diggs started 12 games for the Crimson Tide as a senior, picking up third-team Associated Press All-American and second-team All-SEC accolades. On the season, Diggs had interceptions and tied for the team lead with eight pass breakups, along with 37 tackles and two fumble recoveries.

Diggs has the combination of size, standing 6-foot-1, strength and ball skills to be a more than capable press cover corner at the next level.

Eagles post-free agency 7-round mock draft

Here is a Philadelphia Eagles post-free agency 7-round mock draft. The Eagles make a huge trade with the No. 21 overall pick.

The Philadelphia Eagles made some solid moves in free agency this offseason and have set themselves up nicely for the 2020 NFL Draft.

The Eagles made a blockbuster trade for Pro Bowl cornerback Darius Slay, but they also signed defensive tackle Javon Hargrave, slot cornerback Nickell Robey-Coleman, and safety Will Parks. Philadelphia also re-signed Jalen Mills but labeled the Mills as a “DB” instead of cornerback, which has given the Eagles secondary some options.

Fans have been very outspoken on the Eagles not signing a wide receiver during free agency, as their current receiver room is lacking elite talent in certain areas.

Quarterback Carson Wentz has shown he can win with anyone playing the position, but fans want General Manager Howie Roseman and the Eagles to secure some legitimate weapons for their 5th-year quarterback.

Future Hall of Fame wide receiver DeSean Jackson will be back and that will give the Eagles the much needed deep threat they missed after Jackson was injured for almost the entire 2019 season.

Luckily for the Eagles and their fans, they have the 2020 NFL Draft to add some receivers and other pieces to their Super Bowl puzzle. Here is an Eagles post-free agency 7-round mock draft.

Round 1, Pick 21: Eagles acquire Yannick Ngakoue, DE, via the Jacksonville Jaguars

*Trade*

Eagles receive Yannick Ngakoue

Jaguars receive Pick 21 and Eagles 2021 4th round pick

That is right Eagles fans! Who needs receivers when you can get a young and proven pass rusher in the NFL? For me, it is simple: You have Carson Wentz at quarterback. He has shown you that he can win games with limited talent, so this allows you to add an elite player like Yannick Ngakoue to your roster. Ngakoue would be the Eagles’ best pass rusher right away and would give them instant production and disruption from the edge.

The idea of taking a receiver in the first round is tempting, but this class is so deep that the Eagles will be able to add a starter or two in the later rounds. When you have the chance to get a proven player with a draft pick, you should make the move.
