Cowboys’ Jerry Jones hints at LT Tyron Smith missing 3rd straight game

From @ToddBrock24f7: The Cowboys owner called Smith “iffy” heading into Week 5’s clash with San Francisco; Smith has missed the last 2 games with a knee injury.

In what will likely shape up to be a battle of two of the league’s top defenses, the offensive lines could go a long way in ultimately determining the outcome when Dallas travels to San Francisco this weekend for a primetime showdown of NFC powers.

And the Cowboys don’t know if one of their most important pieces will even be on the field.

Left tackle Tyron Smith is a major question mark heading into Sunday’s Week 5 game, having already missed the last two outings with a knee injury. On Tuesday, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones sounded less than confident about the eight-time Pro Bowler’s status changing in the coming days.

“If he’s available, it would be iffy,” Jones told 105.3 The Fan’s Shan and RJ. “But he could be.”

The oft-injured 32-year-old started Weeks 1 and 2 for Dallas in blowout wins, though he had shown up in the injury reports leading up to both games with an ankle injury. He was not listed as a concern prior to Week 3’s meeting with Arizona and only showed up on the practice report with a knee issue the day before the game.

When that desert duel kicked off Sept. 24, an in-uniform Smith was standing on the sidelines. He did not play in the 28-16 loss, once again making 2015 the most recent season in which the former first-round draft pick appeared in the full slate of games. He sat out last week’s date with New England as well.

Smith has played in just 19 of 54 regular-season games during head coach Mike McCarthy’s tenure.

While Jones’s comments allow hope for Smith’s injured knee to make a turnaround in time for Sunday’s kickoff, the Cowboys will spend the week prudently prepping their Plan B.

“This morning, you need to think about him playing,” Jones said of Smith. “If he doesn’t, we’re well-prepared.”

Chuma Edoga got the start in place of Smith for both Weeks 3 and 4. If he replaces Smith again at Levi’s Stadium, he would have to be considered the weak link as the Cowboys face a San Francisco defense that includes Nick Bosa, Arik Armstead, Javon Hargrave, and Fred Warner, among others.

Second-year man Tyler Smith filled in for Tyron last season at tackle but has been allowed to remain at left guard since he returned to the lineup in Week 3.

Tyron Smith added to Cowboys’ injury report; questionable vs Arizona

From @ToddBrock24f7: The oft-injured veteran has a knee issue that now makes him a 50/50 prospect to play Sunday; two other OL starters are also questionable.

Perhaps the biggest area of concern for Cowboys fans heading into the 2023 regular season was the offensive line, both in terms of the health of the starters as well as the quantity and quality of the depth behind them.

Three weeks into the season, both will be tested even further.

The fabled “best five” linemen employed by the team still have never taken a snap together. And at the rate they’re going, Cowboys Nation shouldn’t be holding its collective breath for it to happen this Sunday in Glendale, as three-fifths of the starting offensive line is now at 50/50 to play.

Veteran left tackle Tyron Smith popped up on the team’s injury watch list on Saturday with a knee issue. Despite not appearing on the practice reports all week long, the eight-time Pro Bowler is suddenly considered questionable for Week 3’s game versus the Arizona Cardinals.

Smith joins right guard Zack Martin and center Tyler Biadasz as being questionable to play on Sunday. Martin was rolled up on last week against the Jets and came out briefly, though he said he could have stayed in the game had the score been closer. He did not practice all week.

Biadasz has been dealing with some sort of hamstring issue since Thursday. The team elevated two other centers from the practice squad for the gameday roster, perhaps signaling that his injury could well impact his playing status.

Martin, Biadasz, and Smith will reportedly travel with the team to Arizona, but determinations on their playing statuses will likely not come until Sunday.

Smith, who will turn 33 later this year, has famously not played a full season since 2015 due to a variety of injuries.

Second-year lineman Tyler Smith is expected to make his 2023 debut after his own hamstring injury kept him sidelined in Weeks 1 and 2. Chuma Edoga exited last week’s game with an elbow injury; he is back to full go and could be inserted into the starting lineup depending on how much shuffling the Cowboys have to do within a unit that has given up just one sack this season.

BREAKING: Cowboys CB Trevon Diggs injured in practice

From @ArmyChiefW3: Trevon Diggs was injured in practice and was seen leaving the facility on crutches. An MRI will follow soon.

Cowboys cornerback Trevon Diggs was seen leaving the Cowboys practice facility using crutches. Per Michael Gehlken of the Dallas Morning News, Diggs injured his knee during the one-on-one period of practice.

Diggs was said to be undergoing an MRI to determine the severity. His availability for this weekend’s game against the Arizona Cardinals, and the season, is unknown until the results of the MRI return.

When asked, quarterback Dak Prescott had this to say about his injured teammate:

Diggs inked a five-year $97 million contract extension this offseason. The deal included a $21.25 million signing bonus along with incentives that could push the deal up to as much as $104 million.

If Diggs is unable to play this weekend, cornerbacks DaRon Bland or Jourdan Lewis could be in line to replace Diggs. Stay tuned as more will surely follow.

Cowboys OL Chuma Edoga suffers knee injury, carted off practice field

From @ToddBrock24f7: Edoga was rolled into by LB Jabril Cox and was unable to put weight on his right leg. He is said to have hyperextended his right knee.

There was already loads of uncertainty surrounding the Cowboys offensive line, with perennial All-Pro guard Zack Martin continuing his holdout and several of the team’s younger linemen being shuffled around in his absence.

Things may have turned an even murkier shade of gray, at least for the short term.

Chuma Edoga, listed on this week’s initial depth chart as the backup left tackle to Tyron Smith, went down during Thursday’s 11-on-11 session with a lower body injury and was carted off the practice field in Oxnard, unable to put weight on his right leg.

Video showed Edoga, the 26-year-old signed by Dallas in March, lined up at left guard on the play. He was eventually hit below the knees by a falling Jabril Cox, who had met ballcarrier Hunter Luepke coming through the hole.

Edoga had already been “favoring his right knee” yet “played through discomfort” up until the time of the injury, according to reports.

Michael Gehlken of the Dallas Morning News followed up after practice with word that two people familiar with the initial diagnosis have classified Edoga’s injury as a “hyperextended” knee.

ESPN’s Todd Archer added that the former Jet and Falcon will get an MRI, but is believed to have escaped major injury.

Still, it’s yet another question mark along the front five for a team that was already hoping to start solidifying some answers, with their season opener exactly one month away.

Seahawks expect tight end Will Dissly to be ready to go by training camp

After suffering a rare injury to the bone on the outside of his knee, Seattle Seahawks TE Will Dissly should be ready to go by training camp.

Seattle Seahawks tight end Will Dissly suffered an unusual injury last year against the Kansas City Chiefs which cut his season short.

“He damaged a bone on the outside of his knee,” coach Pete Carroll told reporters this week from the NFL scouting combine in Indianapolis. “It’s really a rare injury that we haven’t seen before, so that’s why it took some time to figure out how he was going to return. It naturally seemed to heal well.”

Good news for the tight end, who very well could have been headed to the operating table if there had been a different outcome.

“He’s doing really well and making progress,” Carroll continued. “There was a time here when we were relooking to determine whether we need surgery or whether he would recover without it, and it seems that he’s able to do that, so that would be a real positive.”

Carroll even believes Dissly could be able to return in time for the start of training camp this summer.

“I think so,” Carroll said. “I think he will be, yeah.”

Seahawks linebacker Ben Burr-Kirven still trying to make a comeback

Seattle Seahawks linebacker Ben Burr-Kirven is still trying to make a return after suffering a knee injury during the 2021 preseason.

Seattle Seahawks linebacker Ben Burr-Kirven has been diligently working to make it back on the football field after injuring his knee two preseasons ago.

Burr-Kirven could not battle back from the torn ACL he suffered in 2021 and was cut by the Seahawks last July after failing his physical. He spent the 2022 season on Seattle’s reserve/physically unable to perform list.

Coach Pete Carroll provided an update on the former Husky during his final press conference of the season.

“He’s in a little bit of an experimental mode, the surgeries that he’s had and the process that he’s going through,” Carroll told reporters. “He is making progress, he’s always in the weight room with us, he’s always here working, really with a tremendous mentality. The nerve issues, there’s really intricate stuff going on, so he’s had to have a really good attitude to stay in the fight, and he is, he’s in the fight, and he’s planning on getting back out there. We’re going to give him every chance, if he can do it, this is going to be the place he does it.

“So we’ll see what happens, but he’s upbeat, he’s positive, and he’s made improvements in an area that sometimes you don’t make any.”

Seahawks LB Alton Robinson still not at full-speed after season on IR

Despite spending the season on the injured reserve, Seahawks linebacker Alton Robinson still hasn’t fully recovered from his knee injury.

Seattle Seahawks linebacker Alton Robinson was placed on the injured reserve ahead of the start of the 2022 campaign after suffering a knee injury in the preseason.

The hope was that Robinson would be back at some point in the fall, but that turned out not to be the case and he remained on the IR the entire year.

“There are some issues with his return,” coach Pete Carroll said last Monday. “It’s taken him a while. I don’t have the specifics on it, but I know it has been a struggle. I don’t have a good update for you, but he’s still in the process and he’s a ways from getting back and making it back to full speed. It’s a knee injury that there were some complications in there in the return, because it’s just taken him some time.

“He’s worked out hard at it, but he’s not full-speed running yet.”

Because Robinson sustained the injury so long ago, the expectation is that he’ll recover by the start of the new season.

Seahawks DT Bryan Mone had ‘difficult surgery’ to address knee injury

Seattle Seahawks defensive tackle Bryan Mone underwent what turned out to be a “difficult surgery” to repair his torn ACL and knee injury.

Seattle Seahawks defensive tackle Bryan Mone suffered a knee injury in Week 15 during the team’s loss to the San Francisco 49ers. He was carted off the field and eventually underwent surgery to address a torn ACL as well as other issues which weren’t immediately discoverable.

Coach Pete Carroll provided an update on Mone during his end-of-the-season press conference.

“He had a difficult surgery,” Carroll said last Monday. “We’ve got to wait and see. There was more stuff going on than we thought, he had some old stuff in there probably that was part of that. So he’s going to have a good battle to get back.

“I don’t know what the timeframe is on it, but it’s going to take a while.”

Mone started in two of 12 games played for Seattle in 2022 and logged 25 combined tackles and one pass defensed.

Seahawks DT Bryan Mone injures ACL in Seattle’s loss to 49ers

The Seattle Seahawks suffered another blow to the defensive line Week 15 when defensive tackle Bryan Mone was carted off with an ACL injury.

The Seattle Seahawks lost more than just the NFC West division title in Week 15, they could be without defensive tackle Bryan Mone going forward this season.

Mone, who got the start in place of nose tackle Al Woods, who was inactive due to a sore Achilles, suffered a knee injury in the first quarter and was ruled out shortly thereafter.

Following the loss, coach Pete Carroll provided an update on Mone’s status.

“Big Mone, he hurt his knee,” Carroll told reporters. “We can’t say everything, but it’s a significant knee injury . . . He had a legitimate knee injury. It’s an ACL injury.”

Mone was helped off the field and into the medical tent on Thursday and eventually carted off into the locker room.

More information on his condition is expected shortly, but until then, this story is continuing to develop.

Seahawks LB Jon Rhattigan designated to return to practice

Seattle Seahawks linebacker Jon Rhattigan has been designated to return to practice following the knee injury that ended his rookie season.

The Seattle Seahawks resumed practice this week following their bye and so did a player who’d sat out all season. On Tuesday, linebacker Jon Rhattigan was designated to return.

“Well, Jonny Rhattigan is coming back today,” coach Pete Carroll said during his press conference. “He’ll be back out practicing. We’re really fired up that he has made it through his recovery and all that. This is his first day back, so we are kind of celebrating that first of all.”

Rhattigan originally joined the Seahawks out of Army as an undrafted free agent last year, but his rookie season was cut short by a knee injury.

“He’s a really good football player,” Carroll explained. “He’s just a good all-around ball player. It might be his upbringing, I don’t know. He’s really instinctive, he’s tough, he’s a smart player. We’ve missed him in the depth at the linebacker spot, but he’s really made his mark in special teams, and we are really hoping in getting him back out there.”

Rhattigan can practice for up to three weeks before activation onto the 53-man roster.
