Lions shuffle up the veterans on the practice squad

Lions shuffle up the practice squad, adding veterans Anthiny Averett and Anthony Firkser to the mix

On a day where the Lions did not have a practice, Detroit made some changes to the team’s practice squad.

The Lions brought in two experienced vets to the unit, adding TE Anthony Firkser and CB Anthony Averett. To make room, Detroit dumped CB Darius Phillips and WR Trey Quinn from the practice squad.

Firkser is a 28-year-old who has played for several NFL teams since entering the league out of Harvard in 2017. He was last with the Patriots on their practice squad. He’s caught 115 passes in his career.

Averett brings starting experience of his own, as well as some special teams and postseason work in his time with the Ravens.

Neither Phillips nor Quinn appeared in a game for the Lions, though Quinn did have some action in the preseason.

Lions add 2 players, waive injured WR Trey Quinn

The Detroit Lions signed two players and waived injured WR Trey Quinn

The Detroit Lions only held a walkthrough practice session on Tuesday, one that was closed to the media. They did complete a couple of transactions, however.

The Lions officially signed center Alex Mollette a day after reports indicated the deal was imminent. Detroit also re-signed wide receiver Avery Davis.

Davis is back with the Lions after a very short stint on the unemployment line. Signed initially on August 5th, the wideout was then waived on August 9th, before the preseason opener.

Davis replaces injured wideout Trey Quinn, who was waived with injury status on Tuesday. Quinn caught one pass for eight yards in the exhibition win over the Giants.

Lions training camp notebook: 1st day of joint practice with the Giants

Breaking down the notes and noteworthy news from the Detroit Lions first joint practice session with the New York Giants

Tuesday morning brought the New York Giants to the Detroit Lions training facility in Allen Park for the first of two scheduled joint practices between the two teams. As promised by Lions head coach Dan Campbell, it was a good situation for Detroit to go against guys in other jerseys for a change.

Here’s some of what stood out from the first joint practice session on Tuesday, August 8th.

Trey Quinn getting another chance in the NFL after USFL stint

Trey Quinn spent two years at LSU before leading the country in catches at SMU.

A former LSU Tiger will be getting another chance in the NFL after a stint in the USFL.

Wide receiver [autotag]Trey Quinn[/autotag] joined the Detroit Lions in training camp.

Quinn last appeared in the NFL with the Jaguars in 2020. Before that, he spent two years with Washington, where he caught 35 passes and two touchdowns.

Quinn spent two years at LSU before transferring to SMU to finish his career. At SMU in 2017, he led the country in catches with 114 and racked up 1,236 yards.

According to Nick Baumgardner, Quinn made a strong initial impression.

It was another stark reminder of the misused talent throughout the [autotag]Les Miles[/autotag] era. Quinn was a blue-chip talent in 2014, but just like so many other talented receivers, he was never able to maximize his skills in LSU’s outdated attack.

In the USFL last year, Quinn finished 11th in receiving yards and fifth in touchdowns. He’ll now try to make the most of his second chance in the NFL.

Lions sign wide receiver Trey Quinn, waive Tom Kennedy

The Detroit Lions sign wide receiver Trey Quinn, waive WR Tom Kennedy

The Detroit Lions waived wide receiver Tom Kennedy, the team announced on Friday. Kennedy was waived with injury status. To replace Kennedy on the roster, the team signed wide receiver Trey Quinn.

Coming out of SMU for the 2018 NFL Draft, Quinn was a 6’0″ and 203 pound receiver that ran the 40-yard dash in 4.55 seconds and had a 3-cone drill of 6.91 seconds. He originally played football at LSU before transferring to SMU.

When going through the draft process, there was speculation that he could be a 4th or 5th round pick in the 2018 NFL Draft. However, he ended up being the Draft’s Mr. Irrelevant as the last pick after he was selected by Washington.

Quinn ended up playing two seasons with Washington before being waived in September of 2020. During that time, he recorded 35 receptions for 273 yards and two touchdowns.

After being put on waivers, he was signed to the Jacksonville Jaguars practice squad. As his practice squad contract expired, he ended up in Las Vegas before being placed on injured reserve.

Since then, he has had a brief stint with the Denver Broncos and ended up being a key contributor at receiver for the Michigan Panthers this spring in the USFL. For the Panthers, he ended up posting 37 receptions for 438 yards and four touchdowns.

As the Lions continue to look for depth at wide receiver, Quinn will look to make the teams 53-man roster. Players such as Marvin Jones and Jameson Williams not practicing due to injury and being on the NFI list will give Quinn the opportunity to compete.

11 former Broncos set to play in the USFL this spring

There are 11 former Broncos playing in the USFL this spring.

Who’s ready for more spring football?

In addition to the ongoing 2023 XFL season, the USFL is also set to kick off its spring schedule this weekend with eight teams. The XFL’s season started earlier and they got a head start on landing talent, signing 24 former Denver Broncos players this spring.

While the XFL is entering Week 9 of its regular season, the USFL will begin Week 1 on Saturday. There are 11 former Broncos in the USFL this year, most of whom had brief stints on Denver’s offseason roster.

There were 20 former Broncos in the USFL last spring, including quarterbacks Kyle Sloter and Paxton Lynch, who now play in the XFL.

Denver signed wide receiver Darrius Shepherd last August after he competed in the USFL last spring. Last November, the Broncos signed fellow USFL wide receiver Victor Bolden to their practice squad. Denver will undoubtedly consider talent from the XFL and USFL again this year after those leagues wrap up their respective seasons.

Here’s a quick look at the 11 former Broncos playing in the USFL in 2023.

Predicting the Broncos’ 5 upcoming roster cuts

The Broncos need to make five cuts before 2 p.m. MT on Tuesday.

The Denver Broncos have to trim the roster from 85 players down to 80 players before 2:00 p.m. MT on Tuesday. Here’s our quick prediction on which five players could be cut this week.

  • CB Donnie Lewis Jr.: He played the fewest snaps (five) among Denver’s cornerbacks on Saturday.
  • OL Michael Niese: The Broncos have a lot of depth at guard and while Niese might be a practice squad candidate, he’s unlikely to make the 53-man roster.
  • OLB Jonathan Kongbo: Similar to guard, Denver has a crowded outside linebacker depth chart, and Kongbo will face long odds to make the active roster.
  • DB J.R. Reed: Justin Simmons and Kareem Jackson are locks at safety. Caden Sterns and P.J. Locke have been excellent this summer, and they should be locks, too. Delarrin Turner-Yell is a fifth-round pick, so that will help his case. The Broncos seem very unlikely to carry six safeties.
  • WR Trey Quinn: Before his fumble on Saturday, Quinn was having a fine summer, but Denver has more receivers on the roster (11) than any other position, and Quinn might be the odd man out.

After making five cuts Tuesday, the Broncos will face the Minnesota Vikings in their preseason finale on Saturday. After that, Denver will have until the following Tuesday (Aug. 30) to finalize a 53-man roster.

Broncos sign 2 more minicamp tryout players

In addition to CB Blessuan Austin, the Broncos also signed WR Trey Quinn and CB Donnie Lewis this week.

Cornerback Blessuan Austin wasn’t the only player who turned a Denver Broncos minicamp tryout into a contract this week.

In addition to signing Austin on Wednesday, the Broncos also signed wide receiver/returner Trey Quinn and cornerback Donnie Lewis. KOA Radio’s Benjamin Allbright first reported the Quinn signing and KUSA-TV’s Mike Klis broke the news of the Lewis signing.

Austin, Quinn and Lewis were among seven players who tried out for the team this week. The four others — WR Keelan Doss, WR Juwan Green, TE Caleb Wilson and RB Artavis Pierce — remain free agents.

Quinn (6-0, 200 pounds) entered the league as a seventh-round pick out of SMU in 2018. Spending time with three teams, he’s caught 35 passes for 273 yards and two touchdowns in the NFL.

Lewis (6-0, 190 pounds) was also seventh-round pick out of Tulane in 2019. He’s spent time with two different teams since then but is yet to appear in a regular season game.

In addition to those three signings, the Broncos also agreed to terms on a one-year contract with running back Melvin Gordon on Tuesday. That leaves Denver with 19 open roster spots entering the NFL draft. If the Broncos don’t make any trades and use their nine draft picks, the team would then have room to sign 10 undrafted free agents next week.

Broncos trying out 7 players at voluntary minicamp

Among the players trying out for the Broncos this week: CB Bless Austin, who has started 17 games in three seasons.

The Denver Broncos kicked off their voluntary minicamp on Monday with new jersey numbers — and some new faces.

The Broncos invited seven players to camp this week on a tryout basis, according to Ryan O’Halloran of The Denver Post. Here’s a quick glance at the players:

  • WR Keelan Doss (6-3, 215 pounds) entered the NFL as an undrafted free agent out of UC Davis in 2019. He’s spent time with four different teams and has 11 career receptions for 133 yards.
  • WR Juwan Green (6-0, 187 pounds) went undrafted out of Albany in 2020 and he’s spent time with two teams since then but is yet to appear in a regular season game.
  • WR Trey Quinn (6-0, 200 pounds) entered the league as a seventh-round pick out of SMU in 2018. Spending time with three teams, he’s caught 35 passes for 273 yards and two touchdowns in the NFL.
  • TE Caleb Wilson (6-4, 240 pounds) is a former seventh-round pick out of UCLA who’s been with four different teams, but he’s yet to catch a pass in a regular season game.
  • RB Artavis Pierce (5-11, 208 pounds) went undrafted out of Oregon State in 2020 before stints with two different teams. He’s rushed for 34 yards and one touchdown in the NFL.
  • CB Bless Austin (6-1, 198 pounds) is a former sixth-round pick out of Rutgers who played for the New York Jets and then with Seattle Seahawks, totaling 98 tackles and eight pass breakups in three seasons.
  • CB Donnie Lewis (6-0, 190 pounds) was a seventh-round pick out of Tulane in 2019. He’s spent time with two different teams since then but is yet to appear in a regular season game.

The Broncos can carry 90 players on their roster in the offseason and they have 23 open spots going into this week’s draft.

Jags officially name 15 to their initial practice squad

The Jags have names 15 players to their practice squad including veteran Mike Glennon and camp standout Terry Godwin.

The Jacksonville Jaguars named their initial 53-man roster Saturday and spent the remainder of the weekend filling their initial practice squad. On Monday they revealed that they had come to terms with 15 players for the unit, leaving just one slot available for their 16-man unit.

Those player’s names are as follows:

  • RB Nathan Cottrell (Georgia Tech)
  • TE Ben Ellefson (North Dakota State)
  • LB Nate Evans (UCF)
  • TE Matt Flanagan (Pittsburgh)
  • LB Joe Giles-Harris (Duke)
  • QB Mike Glennon (North Carolina State)
  • WR Terry Godwin (Georgia)
  • WR Josh Hammond (Florida)
  • CB Amari Henderson (Wake Forest)
  • OL K.C. McDermott (Miami)
  • OL Austen Pleasants (Ohio)
  • WR Trey Quinn (Southern Methodist)
  • DL Caraun Reid (Princeton)
  • OL Tre’Vour Wallace-Simms (Missouri)
  • P Brandon Wright (Georgia State)

As many fans are aware, there were several rule changes made to the practice squad system this offseason because of the coronavirus pandemic. The new Collective Bargaining Agreement moved the maximum unit number up to 12 players, but that number was increased to 16 when the NFL realized the severity of COVID-19. The league also decided to allow a minimum of six veterans on the unit, giving teams more flexibility during final cuts.

As for their last remaining spot, it was reported that former Philadelphia Eagles cornerback Sidney Jones would be joining the unit. He confirmed his signing through his Instagram story feed and tagged Jacksonville as a destination in it. Regardless as to what the holdup is, fans shouldn’t expect him to be on the Jags’ practice squad long as they have four rookie corners on the roster in C.J. Henderson, Josiah Scott, Chris Claybrooks, and Luq Barcoo.
