Chargers OL Jamaree Salyer questionable to return vs. Chiefs

Jamaree Salyer exited the game with an eye injury.

Even Week 18 has not provided a safe harbor for the Chargers.

Starting guard Jamaree Salyer exited the game late in the first quarter with what the team called an eye injury. It’s unclear when the injury occurred, but such a designation suggests that Salyer was likely poked in the eye during a blocking assignment.

Salyer has started every game for the Chargers this season at right guard. He was replaced by Austen Pleasants, who was elevated from the practice squad for the game.

Projecting the Chargers’ 17-man practice squad

The Chargers can start constructing their practice squad on Wednesday. Here is who we think will make it.

The Chargers trimmed their roster to 53 on Tuesday, but the work in building the roster is not yet done. More moves will come before the opening of the season, beginning with the construction of LA’s practice squad on Wednesday afternoon.

While the NFL has a limit of 16 players on the practice squad, Los Angeles has an exemption to add defensive lineman CJ Okoye as a 17th player through the International Player Pathway Program. For that reason, this projection includes 17 players.

Panthers sign OL Austen Pleasants to practice squad

The Panthers have now added a 6-foot-7, 312-pound offensive lineman to their practice squad. (And, no, that’s not David Foucault.)

In what is now the apparent corresponding move to Monday’s release of running back Rodney Smith, the Carolina Panthers have brought aboard a new offensive lineman. And, boy, they might need a bigger boat.

The team announced the addition of the 6-foot-7, 312-pound Austen Pleasants to the practice squad on Tuesday. Pleasants has spent the last two seasons with the Jacksonville Jaguars, who signed him as an undrafted free agent out of Ohio University in 2020.

The 24-year-old has yet to see any action in the regular season over his brief time as a pro. He had, however, played in each of Jacksonville’s three preseason contests in the summer.

Pro Football Focus marked him out at an overall grade of 45.0 in his 83 exhibition snaps. Pleasants slotted in on the interior of the Jaguars’ offensive line, playing both left and right guard.

As alluded to by general manager Scott Fitterer last week, the team has not had luck tracking down any worthwhile help for their trenches. The trade market for offensive linemen, as it’s been for some time, remains dry.

So we’ll see if this whale of a specimen gets his feet wet at any point this year for a struggling Panthers front.

Jaguars resign OL Austen Pleasants to practice squad

Pleasants was with the team during the offseason, but he was released ahead of final roster cuts.

Jacksonville has made a move with its practice squad, as offensive lineman Austen Pleasants has been brought back into the fold. This move comes after offensive lineman Badara Traore was placed on the practice squad injury list.

The 6-foot, 7-inch Pleasants was originally signed by the Jaguars as an undrafted free agent out of Ohio last season. He didn’t make the final 53-man roster but was placed on the practice squad. After the season, he signed a futures contract with the team.

Pleasants was released this offseason ahead of the final roster cut date after mostly seeing action on the interior at guard throughout training camp. With him coming back, it could be a sign that Jacksonville wants more bodies on the interior with A.J. Cann struggling while Ben Bartch and Tyler Shatley are the only non-starting interior players on the active roster.

The nature and severity of Traore’s injury remain unclear, but it seems Pleasants will be around the locker room for at least the short-term future.

Jags officially name 15 to their initial practice squad

The Jags have names 15 players to their practice squad including veteran Mike Glennon and camp standout Terry Godwin.

The Jacksonville Jaguars named their initial 53-man roster Saturday and spent the remainder of the weekend filling their initial practice squad. On Monday they revealed that they had come to terms with 15 players for the unit, leaving just one slot available for their 16-man unit.

Those player’s names are as follows:

  • RB Nathan Cottrell (Georgia Tech)
  • TE Ben Ellefson (North Dakota State)
  • LB Nate Evans (UCF)
  • TE Matt Flanagan (Pittsburgh)
  • LB Joe Giles-Harris (Duke)
  • QB Mike Glennon (North Carolina State)
  • WR Terry Godwin (Georgia)
  • WR Josh Hammond (Florida)
  • CB Amari Henderson (Wake Forest)
  • OL K.C. McDermott (Miami)
  • OL Austen Pleasants (Ohio)
  • WR Trey Quinn (Southern Methodist)
  • DL Caraun Reid (Princeton)
  • OL Tre’Vour Wallace-Simms (Missouri)
  • P Brandon Wright (Georgia State)

As many fans are aware, there were several rule changes made to the practice squad system this offseason because of the coronavirus pandemic. The new Collective Bargaining Agreement moved the maximum unit number up to 12 players, but that number was increased to 16 when the NFL realized the severity of COVID-19. The league also decided to allow a minimum of six veterans on the unit, giving teams more flexibility during final cuts.

As for their last remaining spot, it was reported that former Philadelphia Eagles cornerback Sidney Jones would be joining the unit. He confirmed his signing through his Instagram story feed and tagged Jacksonville as a destination in it. Regardless as to what the holdup is, fans shouldn’t expect him to be on the Jags’ practice squad long as they have four rookie corners on the roster in C.J. Henderson, Josiah Scott, Chris Claybrooks, and Luq Barcoo.
