Former Georgia Bulldog OL Trey Hill dominates in NFL preseason

Georgia Bulldogs NFL rookie Trey Hill has looked stout for the Cincinnati Bengals in the NFL preseason.

Georgia Bulldogs NFL rookie Trey Hill has looked impressive thus far in the NFL preseason. The Cincinnati Bengals selected Georgia center Trey Hill in the sixth round of the 2021 NFL draft with the 190th pick.

Trey Hill was the only returning starter on the talented Georgia Bulldogs offensive line in 2020. Hill took over at center after former Arizona Cardinal Lamont Gaillard was drafted in 2019. He started 22 games in his Georgia career.

Hill earned AP All-SEC second-team honors in 2019 and was named preseason All-SEC in 2020. Hill started eight games in 2020 before undergoing minor knee surgeries in both knees ahead of the Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl. These surgeries contributed to Hill’s slide in the NFL draft.

Don’t be fooled. Trey Hill is seriously talented and brings a physicality to the center position that few can match. If healthy, then the Bengals landed a steal in the 2021 NFL draft.

The Bengals recently traded center and guard Billy Price to the New York Giants. Perhaps they are showing confidence if Trey Hill.

Hill’s preseason performances gives the Bengals a lot to look forward to:

Trey Hill dominated against the Washington Football Team in the preseason. Washington has one of the better defensive lines in all of football. Hill was playing against back ups, but he looked sharp in pass protection and when run blocking.

Did Bengals get late-round steals with Trey Hill and Chris Evans?

The Cincinnati Bengals might have two gems on their hands from the 2021 NFL draft.

The Cincinnati Bengals made a couple of noteworthy picks late in the 2021 NFL draft that deserve more attention.

We graded both extremely well as the draft proceeded for good reason — Georgia offensive lineman Trey Hill has a chance to stick around for a long time, if not break out as a starter eventually. And Michigan running back Chris Evans could work his way into the rotation quickly.

This is a topic that just came up with Geoff Hobson of Bengals.com too:

“As for Hill, “yeah”, I think both guys in the sixth round, Georgia center Trey Hill and Michigan running back Chris Evans, are here for a while. Hill had third-roundish tape, but appeared to overpay for a sub-par pro day. Still, good tape and good 320-pound size is attractive. The added extra is he has good football intelligence and can play all three inside spots.”

Indeed, Hill looked great on film over eight games last season before it was revealed he was playing through injuries in both knees. If he can get back to 100 percent and keep on his upward developmental trend, he might just be able to fight for a guard spot down the road.

And then there’s Evans, who had part of his collegiate career dashed with academic issues before the Wolverines staff decided to not use him as much as they probably should. He flashed anyway, and if those flashes are any sign, he could be a big asset in the passing game on third downs.

It’s up to the talent to put in the effort and the coaches to do a great job to make late-round selections succeed as always. But the value of both Hill and Evans picks was superb and the Bengals could be much better for it in the long run.

Georgia football’s Trey Hill enters 2021 NFL Draft

Junior Georgia Bulldogs offensive lineman Trey Hill is entering into the 2021 NFL Draft. Hill was a key starter at UGA.

Junior Georgia Bulldogs offensive lineman Trey Hill is entering into the 2021 NFL Draft. Hill began the season as the only returning member of Georgia’s starting offensive line. The Houston County High School product helped Georgia weather the storm and helped the Bulldogs put together some impressive offensive line performances as a unit.

Trey Hill is 6 feet, 4 inches, and is one of the best centers in the 2021 NFL Draft. Impressively, No. 55 has already graduated from the University of Georgia. He is truly a man on a mission.

Hill was named second team All-SEC following his impressive 2019 performance. Unfortunately in 2020 his season was cut short due to injury. Georgia got a preview of how life would be like without Hill in the Peach Bowl. The Bulldogs struggled to consistently run the football against Cincinnati.

Offensive line coach Matt Luke may have his hands full once again in terms of replacing elite talent. Offensive guard Ben Cleveland is also entering into the NFL Draft. Justin Shaffer, a senior, additionally faces an NFL Draft decision.

Trey Hill came to Athens as a four or five star recruit depending on the scouting service and has easily lived up to his touted billing. He announced his decision to declare for the 2021 NFL Draft via his Twitter account:

Congratulations to Trey Hill. He was a rock during his time at Georgia. He has the ability to play right away in the NFL. He’s currently projected as a third round draft selection.

Georgia players ‘should be banned’ for chop block against Tennessee

Georgia players ‘should be banned’ for chop block against Tennessee.

ATHENS — Tennessee (2-1, 2-1 SEC) saw its eight-game winning streak end Saturday at Georgia (3-0, 3-0 SEC).

The Bulldogs defeated Tennessee, 44-21, in Week 3 of a 10-game SEC-only schedule.

During the early stages of the third quarter, Georgia was called for a chop block penalty against Tennessee’s defensive lineman Elijah Simmons.

The play has created discussion if chop block penalties should be treated equally as targeting calls.

On 2nd and 10 for Georgia on Tennessee’s 15-yard line, with 13 minutes, 34 seconds remaining in the third quarter, Bulldogs’ center Trey Hill and right guard Ben Cleveland blocked low, while rolling, against Simmons. Georgia was penalized for a chop block personal foul.

Former Tennessee defensive lineman Daniel Hood discussed Georgia’s chop block penalty in Saturday’s game.

“I do not think chop blocks are bad when they are straight on,” Hood told Vols Wire. “I think they are criminal when they come in at an angle like they did in Georgia’s case against Tennessee. If they roll after the chop, again, what happened at Georgia, they should be banned.

“The coach should be fined for teaching it that way, as a lot of coaches teach to roll, as well.”

During Hood’s playing career at Tennessee (2009-13), he experienced a chop block against him.

“I had one against me, and to this day, my patella tendon is still partially torn,” Hood said.

Hill saw time in all 14 games in 2018, starting the final four games at right guard.  In 2019 he started at center all 14 games, was named to the AP All-SEC 2nd Team and was the co-winner of the Offensive Most Improved Player award at Georgia’s post-season awards gala.

The 6-foot-4, 330-pound Warner Robbins, GA native allowed only two quarterback pressures last season on 433 pass block snaps.

Hill is projected to be taken in the second round of the 2021 NFL Draft following his junior year at UGA.

Sporting News, which is one of five outlets that contribute to determining consensus All-American status, selected Georgia DB Richard LeCounte to the first team as well as OL Trey Hill to the second team.

Sporting News is accompanied by the Walter Camp Foundation, the Associated Press, the Football Writers Association of America and the American Football Coaches Association in selecting college football’s All-Americans.

Both Hill and LeCounte are expected to have big years for Georgia, a team that will be without a lot of talent seen last year.

Hill will be the leader of the Dawgs’ offensive line this season after losing Andrew Thomas, Isaiah Wilson and Solomon Kindley to the NFL Draft.  Thomas and Wilson both went in the first round, a record for UGA, while Kindley went as a steal early in the fourth.

Hill played in all fourteen of Georgia’s contents last season, proving himself as a vital piece to the Dawgs’ O-line.  Georgia will also be without Cade Mays, who transferred to Tennessee this offseason and also made Sporting News’ preseason second team.

LeCounte will lead the Bulldogs defense this season, surprising many with his decision to return for his senior year.

LeCounte is a veteran who has a lot of experience under his belt.  He played in all fourteen games the past two seasons, as well as seven games his freshman year.  LeCounte has put up a total of 150 tackles, 5 interceptions, 6 pass deflections, 5 fumble recoveries and 4 forced fumbles in his collegiate career so far.

Lecounte has a chance this season to solidify himself as one of the greatest DBs in Georgia football history as well as a first round NFL Draft pick.

CFB analyst Cole Cubelic shows love to Georgia C Trey Hill

CFB analyst Cole Cubelic recently showed some love to Georgia football C Trey Hill.

SEC Network analyst Cole Cubelic recently ranked the top-five returning centers in the conference for the 2020 college football season.

At No. 2 he had Georgia junior Trey Hill, who started every game for UGA in 2019.

Only Kentucky’s Drake Jackson ranked ahead of Hill in Cubelic’s rankings.

Next season, look for Hill and Ben Cleveland, who Cubelic ranked as his third best returning offensive guard, to anchor the UGA offensive line.

Hill came to Georgia as a 4-star offensive lineman in the class of 2018 out of Houston County in Warner Robins, the same school that produced Jake Fromm.

Four Georgia players make list of SEC’s top-25 2021 NFL Draft prospects

Four Georgia football players named on Athlon Sports list of the top-25 SEC players available in the 2021 NFL Draft

The Southeast Conference set records this year in the 2020 NFL Draft.  For the 14th straight year the SEC had more players drafted than any other conference.

63 players from the SEC were selected by NFL teams with 40 of those going in the first three rounds, including a record setting 15 in the first-round.  The remaining four Power 5 conferences had a total of 48 players drafted.  LSU had 14 players taken in the draft, the most of any SEC school.

Now that the 2020 draft has come and gone, analysts are already starting to predict next year’s outcome.

Athlon Sports released its list of the top 25 SEC players to watch for next year’s draft.  On that list, four Georgia players were named, and one in the top 10.

Incoming transfer senior quarterback Jamie Newman ranked 21st on the list as well as 2nd among SEC quarterbacks.

Newman completed 61% of his passes for 2,868 yards, 26 touchdowns, 11 interceptions and rushed for another 574 yards and 6 touchdowns last season at Wake Forest.  Now he will be bringing his talents to Athens, in hopes to spark the Bulldogs offense to championship form.

Rising junior cornerback Eric Stokes is next, ranked 20th on the list as well as 4th among SEC cornerbacks.

Stokes played a crucial role as a starter on the Dawgs defense last year.  He also saw some starts later on in the 2018 season.  Georgia’s defense finished first in the nation in scoring defense, allowing opponents an average of just 12.6 points per game.

Stokes recorded 58 total tackles, one sack, 18 pass breakups, one forced fumble and two tackles for loss in the past two seasons. Cornerbacks do not usually eye-popping stats, but Stokes is a nightmare for receivers in coverage.

Rising junior cornerback Tyson Campbell comes in at 16th on the list, 3rd among SEC cornerbacks.

Campbell doesn’t quite have his starting job. Last season, D.J. Daniel took over Campbell’s starting spot following the third game of the year.

Campbell is now a veteran and certainly has the talent to contribute to Georgia’s elite defense. He missed five games last season with a turf toe. His position battle with Daniel will be one of Georgia’s most intriguing intra-squad competitions to start the 2020 season. Georgia has solid depth at cornerback either way and Campbell will likely win his job back.

In the top 10 o  the list is rising senior safety Richard LeCounte at the #8 spot.

Last season, LeCounte totaled 61 tackles, with an SEC-best three forced fumbles and tied for second in the conference in interceptions with four picks. LeCounte was responsible for seven of the 15 turnovers created by the Dawgs defense last year, proving himself to be the leader going into the 2020 season.

Athlon Sports also added a list of 25 honorable mentions to keep an eye on, including defensive tackle Jordan Davis, center Trey Hill and linebacker Monty Rice.
