2021 NBA Mock Draft 3.0: Latest updates after March Madness

Front offices have seen what some of the best prospects in the 2021 NBA Draft have done on the biggest stage.

Now that the NCAA tournament is in the rearview mirror, front offices have seen what the best prospects in the 2021 NBA Draft have done on the biggest stage.

With a new champion crowned, fans have seen the first wave of prospects declare early entry for the draft and forego the remainder of their collegiate eligibility. Others, meanwhile, are testing the waters to gain feedback from teams around the league as they decide whether or not to return to college.

Based on the general consensus learned thus far, now is a great time to offer an update since we last published a mock draft back in February.

The main difference from the big board that I published last month is that my mock also factors intel, team fit, front office evaluation philosophy and roster construction. For example, there are more international players included here because I’m projecting teams with surplus picks will select draft-and-stash players rather than roster four or five rookies next season.

This should act as a barometer for a player’s stock before pre-draft workouts, interviews and the 2021 NBA Draft Combine. As those factors come into the light over the next few months, expect some potentially significant changes.

This draft order, which factors in trades and pick protections, was pulled from the latest Tankathon update following the games on April 12.

You won’t believe how high Tre Mann gets taken in this NBA mock draft

Here is what CBS Sports’ Kyle Boone had to say about when and where former Florida Gators guard Tre Mann might land in the NBA draft.

The National Basketball League’s 2021 draft is still a few months away but the mock draft hot stove is just getting heated up now that the college basketball season and March Madness are well behind us. Turning our attention ahead to the end of July, there is one particular former Florida Gators guard who is well worth keeping your eyes on.

Tre Mann made major leaps forward during his sophomore campaign at UF in 2020, taking advantage of a late growth spurt as well as the maturity that comes with time working within a system. Despite an up-and-down season for head coach Mike White‘s squad, the local boy from Gainesville found a way to make his mark without his teammate Keyontae Johnson on the floor for most of the season, as well as enduring through two separate COVID layoffs.

CBS Sports’ college and NBA writer Kyle Boone gave his latest assessment of the draft order in his mock published on Thursday, with Mann selected higher than any other projections so far from the mainstream sports media. Here is what he had to say about when and where the Gators alumnus might land.

Round 1 – Pick 13
PROJECTED TEAM: Golden State Warriors
PROSPECT RANK: 11th
POSITION RANK: 7th

Florida turned the keys over to Tre Mann to cook over the final stretch of the season. The result of that was gigantic for his draft stock, as he averaged 18.1 points per game over his last seven and added a 30-burger to his resume against Tennessee and its stacked backcourt in that stretch. He really grew over the course of the season as a shot-maker and is oozing with NBA talent as a creator from the guard spot, even if it’s not likely as a lead guard.

While Boone’s take is among the most optimistic for Mann, the talented young guard is just oozing with potential which could be too enticing for a needy franchise to pass up until the second round. Chances are, the former Gator will hear his name called among the first 30 picks — probably earlier than many expect.

Take a look at how these four Gators fared in ESPN’s latest NBA mock draft

Florida could send as many as four players to the NBA this offseason, but questions about pro readiness are still haunting three of them.

With the collegiate regular season and NCAA tournament in the rearview mirror, the collective attention of the basketball world has turned to the upcoming draft. Scheduled for July 29th, there’s plenty of time for the experts to stew and write mock drafts playing out all kinds of scenarios. In ESPN’s latest effort to get a picture of what the draft may look like, two Florida players were selected, while two other were unpicked.

Unsurprisingly, the highest-drafted Gator was guard Tre Mann, who was selected by Charlotte with the 18th pick in the first round. Mann played his best when he wasn’t pressed into service to lead the offense from the point, which makes Charlotte a good landing spot for him.

The Hornets’ offense is lead by LaMelo Ball at the point. Ball, drafted third overall last year on the merit of his size and otherworldly ball skills, will hardly be unseated by Mann. Instead, the former Gator could be his dynamic running mate and part-time backup. After all, he’s more of a shooter than a creator on offense. Between the two of them, the Hornets could have a lot of fun creating space on the floor or bullying smaller guards in the paint.

Take a look at how these three Gators fared in this NBA mock draft

Tre Mann achieves his dream of playing in the NBA, while the other two Gators who filed for the draft go unpicked in this recent mock draft.

Now that college basketball’s regular season has drawn to a close and the NCAA tournament is coming to its climax, the NBA draft season is steadily picking up steam. The upcoming class is widely praised for its immense top-flight talents, outside of that elite group, there’s a lot we still don’t know about the 2021 NBA draft.

In Bleacher Report’s latest full two-round mock, departing Gator Tre Mann was drafted by the Denver Nuggets with the 23rd pick in the first round. Mann, a five-star recruit who struggled his freshman season, benefitted from added size and parlayed his growth into a highly productive season.

var js, fjs = d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0];

fjs.parentNode.insertBefore(js, fjs);
}(document, ‘script’, ‘exco-player’));

Here’s what Bleacher Report had to say about the pick:

23. Denver Nuggets: Tre Mann (Florida, PG/SG, Sophomore)

Mann averaged 21.3 points in four games between both postseason tournaments, giving scouts more glimpses of shot-creation and shooting versatility. It’s worth questioning if he’s an effective enough playmaker to be used as a primary ball-handler, but he still offers an exciting mix of off-the-dribble scoring and setup ability for a combo guard.

The Nugs could use a more effective backup for star point guard Jamal Murray than Facundo Campazzo, but Murray is a 35-minute per game player and they’re also carrying multiple highly paid players at the shooting guard position. That makes Mann – an exciting shooter who isn’t a natural facilitator – an awkward fit with the team, who would seem better off targeting a big man to replace the aging Paul Millsap.

NEXT: What about Scottie Lewis and Colin Castleton?

These are the players departing the Florida Gators mens’ basketball team

The Gators are losing a number of players after a difficult season, headlined by Tre Mann and including four who filed to transfer.

In light of all they had to face in the 2020-21 season, it’s tough not to think of the Gators as a success after managing a not-too-shabby 15-10 record and getting to the second round of both the SEC and NCAA tournaments. However, despite their accomplishments, the program is witnessing something of a mass exodus of talent, extending to both the players and the coaching staff.

Because of the unusually large number of players departing for other teams, let’s take a look at each. Of course, there could be more bad news for the team coming down the pipe, but so far only these players have declared their intent to find new homes. Additionally, those who have entered the transfer portal could remove their names from the market and return to Gainesville if they have a change of heart.

Florida’s star guard Tre Mann declares for NBA draft

One of the most talented guards in this draft class is declaring for the NBA Draft and hiring an agent effectively ending his college career

In a move that shouldn’t come as much of a surprise, star Gators point guard Tre Mann announced on Wednesday morning that he will be entering the 2021 NBA draft. In an accompanying statement sent to ESPN, Mann said he intends to hire an agent, which would mean he’s forfeiting his remaining college eligibility.

“After much consideration, I have decided to take the next step in my basketball career and will declare for the 2021 NBA draft,” Mann told ESPN. “To Gator nation, your love and support will always hold a special place in my heart. I will be hiring an agent to help guide me through this process.”

Mann averaged 16 points in 2020-21, but over the SEC and NCAA Tournaments, his production skyrocketed with him averaging 21 points. He’s seen his NBA stock rise considerably in recent weeks, and it appears Mann feels ready to try his hand at the professional ranks.

“My season at Florida was filled with a lot of individual growth with the significant increase of playing time and emphasis on fulfilling my role,” Mann said. “However, this year was filled with adversity in [the form of] COVID and the loss of Keyontae [Johnson]. While we didn’t reach our goal as a team in the NCAA tournament, it was a great experience nonetheless.”

He’s one of the most talented guards in this draft class, and he should be a first-round pick. Florida hasn’t had a player selected in the NBA Draft since Erik Murphy in 2013.

It’s unclear how the format of the draft will work this season, as no dates have been announced for the event (or for deadlines for players to withdraw). But Mann has some experience with the process as he tested the waters last offseason. Now, after his sophomore season, it appears he’s gone for good.

“I would like to thank Coach White and his staff at the University of Florida for believing in me and helping to shape me into the man and player I am today,” he said. “Thank you to all my teammates who shared the Gator uniform with me for the last two seasons. Thank you to my family for always providing me with love and support. No words can ever describe how grateful I am to you.”

2021 NBA Draft Big Board 2.0: Top prospects playing in March Madness

This includes some names to watch in the men’s tourney.

March Madness is set to begin, which means for college basketball fans, it’s the most wonderful time of the year. But it’s also one of the busiest times for scouts and executives around the NBA.

Last season, the men’s NCAA Tournament was canceled due to COVID-19, which makes the stakes even higher for those involved in this year’s event. It will be a fascinating few weeks of basketball, all unfolding in Indiana, and the games are sure to further illuminate who may be most worth targeting in the 2021 NBA Draft.

But in addition to the spotlight of college basketball fully underway, we have now also seen the entirety of the 2021 G League season. That included the inaugural campaign for the Ignite, a pathway to the NBA for top talents who sought an alternative to the NCAA. Their exciting playoff run taught us more about prospects including Jalen Green and Jonathan Kuminga.

So with those results in mind, and with the college basketball postseason on the horizon, we have ranked the Top 100 prospects most likely set to make the jump to the NBA next season.

Our methodology for the rankings includes conversations with folks around the league, learning the general consensus surrounding a player, as well as a deep dive into stats and game film.

To put everything in perspective, we have also included everyone’s previous ranks from our last update, published on Jan. 22. This helps show whether a player is trending up or trending down and also helps illuminate how much can change in just two months of action.

As the madness begins during the men’s NCAA Tournament, follow along to see how these players are performing, as many will make a case to move up or down once the nets are cut on Apr. 5, 2021.

The Athletic names Tre Mann SEC Player of the Year for 2021

The Gators may have lost the Preseason SEC Player of the Year in Keyontae Johnson, but Mann stepped up to the plate big-time this year.

[mm-video type=video id=01f0a2ae77ve53vgjx playlist_id=none player_id=none image=https://images2.minutemediacdn.com/image/upload/video/thumbnail/mmplus/01f0a2ae77ve53vgjx/01f0a2ae77ve53vgjx-c8e3764a5992d1bcdca05ae8864d48d7.jpg]

When Florida lost Keyontae Johnson for the season after his scary collapse against FSU in December and subsequent hospitalization, it didn’t just lose its on-court leader. It lost the Preseason SEC Player of the Year.

Without Johnson, the Gators had to adjust their plans for the season tremendously. The team was desperate for someone to step up and take a leadership position, but it was unclear who that player may be. Now, the answer is obvious.

Tre Mann has been one of the most improved players in the country this season. After an entirely forgettable freshman year, he’s finally proving why he was a five-star recruit. His play in recent weeks hasn’t gone unnoticed, either. In The Athletic’s postseason awards for each conference, Mann was named the SEC Player of the Year.

POY: Tre Mann, 6-5 sophomore guard, Florida. This is a weird category. The most outstanding season in the league was arguably turned in by Vanderbilt sophomore guard Scotty Pippen Jr., who ranks in the top five of the conference in points (20.6), assists (4.9), steals (1.8), field goal percentage (45.0), 3-point percentage (39.0), free throw percentage (82.4) and assist-to-turnover ratio (1.2). However, you can’t really give POY to a guy on a last-place team. Alabama senior forward Herb Jones is the most valuable player on a team that won the regular-season title by two games, but he’s also the Tide’s fourth-leading scorer. Two freshman guards, LSU’s Cameron Thomas and Arkansas’ Moses Moody, also merit consideration. Mann, however, led the Gators in scoring (15.0) while ranking in the top 10 of the league in assists (3.4), steals (1.6), field goal percentage (44.9), 3-point percentage (39.3), free throw percentage (83.8) and assist-to-turnover ratio (1.2). More important, he led this team to a fifth-place finish and a return to the NCAA Tournament after losing its best player, senior forward Keyontae Johnson, in a traumatic fashion.

Though he hasn’t been the conference’s most productive player, arguably no one else in the SEC is as valuable to their team as Mann is to the Gators. He’s key to whatever postseason hopes Florida has, and without him in the loss to Tennessee, the offense struggled mightily.

Mann’s breakout season isn’t yet over, and UF will hope it can earn some hardware before he potentially chooses to move on to the draft at the end of the season.

Gators’ star point guard Tre Mann out with migraine against Tennessee

The news comes ahead of UF’s road match which will decide which team earns the four and five seeds in the SEC Tournament.

Florida’s star point guard Tre Mann will not play in the Gators’ final game of the regular season against the Tennessee Volunteers to a migraine, the university’s communications director Denver Parler announced on Twitter Sunday morning ahead of tipoff.

The news comes ahead of UF’s road match which will decide which team earns the four and five seeds in the Southeastern Conference Tournament. The loss is a huge one for a team aleady missing its SEC Preseason Player of the Year Keyontae Johnson.

Tipoff is scheduled for noon EST in Thompson-Boling Arena, Knoxville, Tennessee and will be broadcast on ESPNU, livestreamed on the ESPN app and can be heard on the Gators Sports Network.
