Duke slides in latest D1Baseball rankings after series loss to Clemson; remains in top 10

Duke lost its first series of the year, an ACC matchup with Clemson, and slid down three spots to ninth in latest D1Baseball poll.

The Duke Blue Devils have lost a series for the first time all season. It wasn’t as if they lost a team to be ashamed of, but this is the first series loss Chris Pollard and his team will have to bounce back from.

The Clemson Tigers came to Durham for Duke’s home ACC opening weekend, and the Tigers spoiled it, taking the Saturday and Sunday games to claim the series. With that series loss, the Blue Devils have slid in the latest D1Baseball rankings. Duke remains a top-10 team, but they are now ninth after their three-spot slide.

Arkansas continues to cruise atop the rankings, while Oregon State and Vanderbilt round out the top three. The Commodores jumped six spots.

Clemson shot up six spots to fourth, now the highest-ranked ACC team in the poll. A slew of SEC teams follow with LSU and Florida at fifth and sixth, respectively, and Texas A&M and Tennessee rounding out the teams in front of Duke.

Fellow North Carolina-based team ECU officially cracked the top 10 for the first time this season.

Florida State debuted at 12, joining the ranks of ACC teams inside the top 25. The Seminoles have reeled off 18 straight wins to start the season and are the only undefeated team in the poll.

Virginia is 14th after taking a series from Wake Forest. The Demon Deacons continue to slide after their second straight series loss. They are now 16th after holding the seventh spot last week.

Virginia Tech also enters the poll after being unranked last week. They are 19th, one place ahead of UNC at 20. After a week that saw them go winless, getting swept by Georgia Tech, the NC State Wolfpack are officially out of the poll.

Duke will end its six-game homestand on Tuesday when it hosts Towson at Jack Coombs Field. The first pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m.

LSU baseball rolls in both games of Sunday matinee

The Tigers concluded a perfect weekend with two wins in Sunday’s doubleheader.

It was a beautiful day for a Sunday matinee at Alex Box Stadium as LSU finished off a four-game weekend going 4-0 and raising its overall record to 7-1 on the year.

The Tigers took down the Towson Tigers with an 11-1 win in the first slot of the Sunday doubleheader, and in the second game against the Southern Jaguars, they were even more dominant. LSU won that won 15-0 and is in good shape ahead of a difficult slate next weekend that features matchups against Big 12 foes in Oklahoma, Texas and Baylor

With a strong performance this weekend, the Tigers bounced back from a tough road loss to a good Louisiana Tech team. Let’s take a look at how it happened.

Next: LSU comes out on top in Tigers vs. Tigers showdown

LSU shuts out Towson behind another great start by Blake Money

The Tigers got back to their winning ways with a 6-0 win over Towson to kick off a four-game weekend slate.

LSU came into Friday night’s game after a disappointing loss to the Louisiana Tech Bulldogs in Ruston, Louisiana, on Wednesday night. With a weekend full of games upcoming at “The Box,” the Tigers wanted to try to get back into the swing of things.

Although the bats traveled well to Ruston on Wednesday, the defense didn’t. LSU had a total of five errors and two walks that ultimately doomed them. The Tigers only had two errors on Friday night in a 6-0 shutout against the Towson Tigers, both of them charged to shortstop Jordan Thompson.

The scoring spree started in the bottom of the first inning, Tre Morgan reached base with a walk, then Dylan hit a Crews missile to left field to make it 2-0 Tigers after one inning. In the bottom of the second, Alex Milazzo led off with a single and wound up scoring on a bases-loaded walk to make it 3-0 LSU through two innings.

In the bottom of the third inning, Jack Merrifield hit an RBI groundout that scored Brayden Jobert, Dylan Crews followed that with a two-RBI triple to make it 6-0 LSU. Blake Money (2-0) was replaced in the top of the eighth inning after another very impressive outing, going seven full innings and allowing zero runs and only two hits.

Garrett Edwards came in and only gave up a single as he recorded the last six outs of the ballgame to secure the 6-0 Tiger victory in the first game of an eventful weekend in Baton Rouge. LSU was led at the plate by Alex Milazzo who went 2 for 2 on the night, followed by Dylan Crews, who was 2 for 5 with four RBI, and reigning SEC Player of the Week Cade Doughty, who was 2 for 4.

LSU will play Southern tomorrow with the first pitch at 1:30 p.m. CST from Alex Box Stadium.

Ohio State uses strong second half to beat Towson

Ohio State hoops notched another win!

The Towson Tigers made life difficult on the Ohio State basketball team in the first half Wednesday night, but the Buckeyes came out and took control of the second half. Townson continued to hang tough down the stretch, but OSU was able to stay a step or two ahead and turned aside an upset bid, winning 85-74 to improve their record to 7-2.

Townson used good spacing, and solid shooting in the first half and gave OSU all sorts of fits. It took a Zed Key midrange jumper with the clock winding down late just to give the Buckeyes a one-point 33 to 32 lead heading to the locker room.

For the second straight game, Ohio State used some hot shooting from the outside to pull away. Justin Ahrens led the way from deep, scoring 16 points and hitting 5-of-10 from beyond the arc. As a team, the Buckeyes shot 10-of-23 (43.5%) from 3-point range.

Forward Kyle Young led OSU in scoring with another efficient knight, scoring 18 points on just 6-of-7 shooting. E.J. Liddell had another solid game despite garnering more and more attention. He finished with 15 points and seven rebounds but has to continue to get better at taking care of the basketball. He had far too many turnovers (7) while getting doubled in post position.

The next game is a big one. Ohio State steps back inside the Big Ten to take on a ranked Wisconsin team on Saturday.

Ohio State basketball vs. Towson: How to watch and listen to the game Wednesday

Ohio State welcomes the Towson Tigers to Value City Arena for a non-conference battle on the hardwood. Here’s how to find the game.

There was no hangover from the big Duke win on Sunday as Ohio State took care of Penn State on the road to open conference play with a victory. The Buckeyes got some sharpshooting from the perimeter in the contest which had been lacking in previous games. That’s a positive step in the right direction heading into Big Ten play.

Now, Ohio State gets another non-conference opponent as Towson comes to Value City Arena. This should be another tune-up game before the Bucks welcome Wisconsin for another Big Ten conference matchup.

It’s another late tip, so get your naps in early to see the Buckeyes take on the Tigers.
