Former LSU stars Tommy Hodson, Bradie James to serve as guest captains for Arkansas game

The LSU royalty will be honored before the coin flip on Saturday night.

LSU will have purple and gold royalty on hand to serve as guest captains for the coin flip against Arkansas in Death Valley on Saturday night.

A pair of former star players, quarterback [autotag]Tommy Hodson[/autotag] and linebacker [autotag]Bradie James[/autotag], will be honored before the game, LSU announced on Wednesday.

Hodson played for the Tigers from 1986-89, starting all four years. A four-time First Team All-SEC selection and the SEC Freshman of the Year during a prolific campaign in 1986, Hodson was ultimately a third-round pick in the 1990 NFL draft.

He spent six seasons in the league, most of which were with the New England Patriots.

James was a four-year starter, as well, from 1999-02. He received back-to-back First Team All-SEC honors in 2001 and 2002, being named a First Team All-American in the latter campaign.

A fourth-round pick for the Cowboys, James went on to play in the NFL for a decade, nine years of which were spent in Dallas. He’s landed on the College Football Hall of Fame ballot multiple times, as well.

Former LSU LB Bradie James named to 2024 College Football Hall of Fame ballot

James played at LSU from 1999-02, earning back-to-back First Team All-SEC honors as well as becoming a First Team All-American in his final season.

Former standout Tigers linebacker [autotag]Bradie James[/autotag] could be the latest LSU Tiger to join the College Football Hall of Fame.

James was among the players nominated by the National Football Foundation for the 2024 induction class on Monday. In total, 78 players and nine coaches from the Football Bowl Subdivision were named to the ballot in addition to 101 players and 32 coaches from the lower divisions.

James played at LSU from 1999-02, earning back-to-back First Team All-SEC honors in 2001 and 2002 while also being named a First Team All-American in the latter season.

The Monroe native played professionally for 10 seasons, most of which was with the Dallas Cowboys (2003-11), which drafted him in the fourth round. He spent his final season with the Houston Texans.

Here are the eligibility rules for the College Football Hall of Fame:

  • First and foremost, a player must have received First-Team All-America recognition by a selector that is recognized by the NCAA and utilized to comprise its consensus All-America teams.
  • A player becomes eligible for consideration by the Foundation’s Honors Courts 10 full seasons after his final year of intercollegiate football played.
  • While each nominee’s football achievements in college are of prime consideration, his post-football record as a citizen is also weighed. He must have proven himself worthy as a citizen, carrying the ideals of football forward into his relations with his community. Consideration may also be given for academic honors and whether the candidate earned a college degree.
  • Players must have played their last year of intercollegiate football within the last 50 years.* For example, to be eligible for the 2024 ballot, the player must have played his last year in 1974 or thereafter. In addition, players who are playing professionally and coaches who are coaching on the professional level are not eligible until after they retire.
  • A coach becomes eligible three full seasons after retirement or immediately following retirement provided he is at least 70 years of age. Active coaches become eligible at 75 years of age. He must have been a head football coach for a minimum of 10 years and coached at least 100 games with a .600 winning percentage.
  • Nominations may only be submitted by the current athletics director, head coach or sports information director (SID) of a candidate’s collegiate institution. Nominations may also be submitted by the president/executive director of a dues-paying chapter of the National Football Foundation.

James looks to become the 12th LSU player to join the College Football Hall of Fame with the most recent being 2022 inductee [autotag]Kevin Faulk[/autotag]. James was also a nominee for the 2023 induction class.

The 2024 induction class will be announced sometime early next year.

Top 101 LSU football players of all time: No. 50-41

The countdown continues as we hit the home stretch.

LSU football has been around for a long time. Since 1893, to be exact.

In that span, plenty of great football players have come through the program. Before we begin the journey of the 2022 season, I thought I’d take a stab at ranking the 101 best players in LSU history.

I have tried to avoid recency bias as much as possible. It can be hard to get enough information about older players, but I did my best to get them about in the ballpark of where they should be.

Anytime there’s a list this big, people will disagree. There’s so little that separates the 50th player from the 70th, and so on.

I tried to balance consistency over multiple seasons with some players that had one great year. Both have been rewarded here. With that in mind, let’s continue the countdown.

Every College Football Hall of Fame member from LSU

LSU has put 11 players and five coaches into the hall.

The National Football Foundation recently released the list of nominees for the 2023 College Football Hall of Fame induction class. One of the many players to crack the ballot — [autotag]Bradie James[/autotag] — is a former LSU linebacker.

James will look to become the 12th former Tigers player to be inducted in the hall. Currently, only 10 players have been inducted, but that will change in December when [autotag]Kevin Faulk[/autotag] joins as part of the 2022 class. LSU has also seen five coaches be selected for the Hall of Fame.

As we wait to find out if the list of LSU players in Atlanta will grow by one, here’s a rundown of every former Tigers player and coach currently in the Hall of Fame.glenn do

Former LSU linebacker Bradie James makes College Football Hall of Fame ballot

James will look to become the 12th LSU player inducted into the Hall of Fame.

The Tigers have put 10 players and five coaches into the College Football Hall of Fame during the program’s storied history.

That number will become 11 in December when running back Kevin Faulk is inducted as part of the 2022 class, but LSU could be set to add another in 2023. Last week, the National Football Foundation announced the list of 176 former players and 42 former coaches between the FBS and the lower levels who will be on the ballot, and one former Tigers player cracked that list.

Linebacker [autotag]Bradie James[/autotag], a Monroe native who played for the Tigers from 1999-02, received recognition. James was a First Team All-American in 2002 and received First Team All-SEC honors in 2001 and 2002. His 154 tackles in his final season still stand as the single-season program record.

He was a fourth-round pick in 2003 and played in the NFL for 10 seasons for the Dallas Cowboys and Houston Texans, finishing his career with 821 tackles, 16 sacks, two interceptions and 10 forced fumbles.

In total, only 1,056 players have ever been inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame. This year’s class will be announced at some point in 2023 with more details coming later. Earning a spot won’t be easy, as there are a number of high-profile players also eligible including Tim Tebow and Reggie Bush.

You can find the full ballot of players and coaches eligible for the Hall of Fame here.

5 Former Cowboys nominated for College Football Hall of Fame

The College Hall of Fame has started their process for the 2023 class and several Cowboys-related folks made the first cut. | From @NoHuddle

Despite Canton, OH being the ultimate individual prize football has to offer in the form of the Pro Football Hall of Fame, there’s still plenty of room for players to find their honor in other hallowed grounds. There are rings of honor, numbers being retired, and then there’s the College Football Hall of Fame.

Five former Dallas Cowboys have been nominated for that exact honor and while none of them have a gold jacket or their name circling AT&T Stadium, they all have special place in the hearts of Cowboys Nation.
