Former Alabama transfer commits to SEC program

The former Alabama safety is heading back to the SEC.

A former Alabama Crimson Tide football player made news late Wednesday night, as transfer safety Tony Mitchell announced his commitment to return to the SEC next season and play for the Mississippi State Bulldogs.

Mitchell, who transferred from Alabama during this past offseason, took to social media to make the announcement Wednesday night.

A four-star prospect, Mitchell originally came to Alabama as a member of the Crimson Tide’s 2023 recruiting class. At the time, Mitchell was considered as one of the top safeties in the state where he attended in-state Thompson High School, and was a multi-year starter for one of Alabama’s top prep programs.

Once in Tuscaloosa however, Mitchell would see fairly limited action as a true freshman, recording only one tackle during the 2023 season. Despite this however, the four-star was among the candidates to see an increase in playing time in year two, but instead entered the transfer portal back in April where he ended up at East Mississippi Community College.

Now committed to Mississippi State as well, that means that Mitchell will officially make his return to the SEC in 2025.

Former 4-star, Alabama safety Tony Mitchell transferring to East Mississippi Community College

Former Alabama safety Tony Mitchell will continue his college career at East Mississippi Community College.

Former Alabama Crimson Tide football safety Tony Mitchell is transferring to East Mississippi Community College in Scooba, Mississippi. The news was first reported by On3’s Matt Zenitz.

Mitchell was a four-star prospect coming out of high school. He chose to sign with the Crimson Tide over other programs like the Auburn Tigers and Texas A&M Aggies.

Mitchell underwent some off-the-field issues but was able to remain with the football team. During his freshman season, he played in seven games. The majority of his playing time came on special teams. He recorded just one tackle.

Given the fact that Mitchell is entering his sophomore season, he will spend five months with the program. That is considering that everything goes as planned for the former blue-chip recruit.

Roll Tide Wire will continue to follow the latest regarding the Alabama football program.

Everything Nick Saban said following Alabama’s first spring practice

Everything Nick Saban said following Alabama’s first practice of the spring!

On Monday, the Alabama Crimson Tide football team hit the practice field to begin spring activities.

Alabama has a lot of question marks entering spring, but maybe none more important than who will take the reigns of the Crimson Tide offense at quarterback.

Following Monday’s two-hour practice, Alabama head coach Nick Saban would make his way over to the Mal M. Moore Athletic Facility to speak to members of the media. Coach Saban would speak on what he is looking to get out of the spring, provide an injury report, and much more.

Here is everything coach Saban had to say on Monday!

Did Nick Saban call out Nate Oats when referring to a suspended Alabama football player?

Nick Saban raised eyebrows Monday after a remark some thought was directed toward Alabama basketball coach Nate Oats.

Nick Saban raised eyebrows Monday after a remark that was seemingly related to the controversy surrounding Nate Oats and the basketball program, though media members were told afterward it was merely a coincidental choice of phrasing.

The Alabama head coach’s thoughts came shortly after AL.com reported that Crimson Tide freshman defensive back Tony Mitchell had been suspended from the team and “all team activities” following his arrest last week in Florida.

“Everybody’s got an opportunity to make choices and decisions,” Saban told a group of reporters. “There’s no such thing in being at the wrong place at the wrong time.

“You’ve got to be responsible for who you’re with, who you’re around, and what you do, who you associate yourself with, and the situations that you put yourself in.”

It’s hard to ignore Saban’s comments when thinking of Oats’ choice words last month regarding NBA lottery pick Brandon Miller, who was reportedly on the scene of a recent fatal shooting near Alabama’s campus involving then-teammate Darius Miles. Oats defended Miller by saying that the basketball star was simply in the “wrong spot at the wrong time.”

“Can’t control everything anybody does outside of practice,” Oats said, per AL.com. “Nobody knew that was going to happen. College kids are out, Brandon hasn’t been in any type of trouble nor is he in any type of trouble in this case.”

Oats later apologized for his “poor choice of words” regarding a shooting that left a 23-year-old woman dead.

Miller reportedly cooperated as a witness and hasn’t been charged with any crimes. He’s been essential for Alabama as the basketball team makes its way through this year’s men’s NCAA tournament.

Shortly after Saban’s comment, Tuscaloosa News sports columnist Chase Goodbread reported his words were purely “coincidental.”

Auburn safety target Tony Mitchell signs with Alabama

Auburn made a run at Tony Mitchell but was unable to pry him away from Alabama.

Auburn made a push to flip 4-star safety [autotag]Tony Mitchell[/autotag] from Alabama but was unable to do so as he signed with the Crimson Tide Wednesday.

Mitchell committed to Alabama back in June but visited Auburn multiple times since then and the Tigers were able to make it interesting right up until the end.

Checking in at 6-foot-2 and 180 pounds he starred at Thompson High and actually played his final high school game in Jordan-Hare Stadium, where he won his fourth state championship.

He is the No. 5 safety and No. 54 overall player in the 247Sports Composite ranking. He is also the No. 7 player from the state of Alabama.

2023 4-star DB Tony Mitchell signing with Alabama after visits to Texas A&M and Auburn

2023 defensive back Tony Mitchell had been committed to Alabama for quite a while but still entertained other programs like Auburn and Texas A&M. On Wednesday, he officially signed with the Tide.

Despite taking visits to Auburn and Texas A&M, 2023 defensive back Tony Mitchell will be signing with Alabama. The Alabama native had been committed to the Tide since June.

Mitchell is ranked as the No. 54 recruit in the country, according to 247Sports’ Composite Rankings. He is listed as 6-foot-2, 180 pounds. With his size and versatility, Mitchell is expected to be in the mix at safety next season. The only true cornerback that Alabama has on board at this time is Jahlil Hurley.

Mitchell recorded 56 tackles, eight tackles for loss, and one sack in his senior season at Thompson High School. He will be a huge help to Alabama’s secondary for years to come.

Roll Tide Wire will continue to cover Alabama football and the early signing period as more commits sign their national letters of intent.

Early Signing Period: 5 names Alabama fans should know

5 names that Alabama fans should be watching when early signing day arrives on Wednesday.

Bowl season is underway but maybe the biggest headline across the sport of college football this week is the early signing period has nearly arrived. On Wednesday some of the nation’s top talent will begin signing their national letters of intent with their school of choice.

Currently, [autotag]Nick Saban[/autotag] and the Crimson Tide have the top-ranked class in the country, according to most recruiting services, and should have a strong Wednesday.

Alabama has 25 commitments heading into the week with several high-level prospects still on the board and within reach for the Crimson Tide.

Here are the top five names that Alabama fans should be watching come Wednesday:

Flipping season: Four impactful commitments Auburn hopes to earn

There is just over a week until the early signing period begins, and Hugh Freeze is working to sway these four players from their current commitments.

Auburn head coach Hugh Freeze has been given the tall task to boost the Tigers’ stock in recruiting ahead of the early signing period that begins Wednesday, Dec. 21.

Auburn currently ranks No. 57 in 247Sports’ 2023 rankings. The Tigers were as high as No. 32 before the recent de-commits from three-star defensive linemen [autotag]Jamarrion Harkless[/autotag] and [autotag]Ashley Williams[/autotag].

Since taking over as Auburn’s head coach on Nov. 28, Freeze has hit the recruiting trail hard, along with his assistant coaches. Among those being pursued by Freeze are two teammates from Carver High School in Montgomery, James Smith and Qua Russaw. The pair remain uncommitted but spent plenty of time on campus during the season. Zac Etheridge has kept them close, but Freeze will need to close.

There are four targets, however, that are committed elsewhere but have a great chance to be flipped. Steve Wiltfong of 247Sports says that Auburn is working on flipping four players, including two that are current SEC pledges.

[autotag]Tony Mitchell[/autotag], a five-star safety from power Thompson High School in Alabaster, visited Auburn three times during the season and is expected to visit the Plains again this upcoming weekend. The Alabama commit tells Auburn Undercover that he loves Hugh Freeze’s energy. (Subscription required).

Another SEC commit that Auburn is trying to pursue is four-star quarterback [autotag]Marcel Reed[/autotag]. Reed, who had not appeared on Auburn’s radar until this week, will be in town for an official visit. Auburn joins [autotag]Texas A&M[/autotag] as programs trying to lure the Nashville product away from Lane Kiffin and Ole Miss.

Two others that will be in town this weekend will be Michigan State commit [autotag]Colton Hood[/autotag], and Miami commit [autotag]Connor Lew[/autotag]. Despite being committed elsewhere, Auburn has remained heavy in their pursuit.

Alabama takes over top spot in On3’s Consensus Team Rankings

After a dominating month of July on the recruiting trail, Nick Saban and Alabama take over the top spot in On3’s Consensus Team Rankings.

After a week that saw not one but two five-star commitments, [autotag]Nick Saban[/autotag] and Alabama have now taken over the top spot in On3’s Consensus Team Rankings.

Over the last few days, the Crimson Tide has received commitments from both the nation’s top safety in [autotag]Caleb Downs[/autotag] and the nation’s top running back in [autotag]Richard Young[/autotag]. Downs and Young join fellow five-star prospects [autotag]Tony Mitchell[/autotag] and Jahlil Hurley as the top-rated commitments in Alabama’s class.

Alabama has two of the top ten quarterbacks in [autotag]Eli Holstein[/autotag] and Dylan Lonergan as well as two of the top three running backs in the aforementioned Young and [autotag]Justice Haynes[/autotag].

Currently, Alabama has a total of 16 commitments, 10 of which are ranked within the top 200 and there are no signs of the Tide slowing down anytime soon.

Roll Tide Wire will continue to monitor the Alabama Crimson Tide on the recruiting trail and beyond.
