Flipping season: Four impactful commitments Auburn hopes to earn

There is just over a week until the early signing period begins, and Hugh Freeze is working to sway these four players from their current commitments.

Auburn head coach Hugh Freeze has been given the tall task to boost the Tigers’ stock in recruiting ahead of the early signing period that begins Wednesday, Dec. 21.

Auburn currently ranks No. 57 in 247Sports’ 2023 rankings. The Tigers were as high as No. 32 before the recent de-commits from three-star defensive linemen [autotag]Jamarrion Harkless[/autotag] and [autotag]Ashley Williams[/autotag].

Since taking over as Auburn’s head coach on Nov. 28, Freeze has hit the recruiting trail hard, along with his assistant coaches. Among those being pursued by Freeze are two teammates from Carver High School in Montgomery, James Smith and Qua Russaw. The pair remain uncommitted but spent plenty of time on campus during the season. Zac Etheridge has kept them close, but Freeze will need to close.

There are four targets, however, that are committed elsewhere but have a great chance to be flipped. Steve Wiltfong of 247Sports says that Auburn is working on flipping four players, including two that are current SEC pledges.

[autotag]Tony Mitchell[/autotag], a five-star safety from power Thompson High School in Alabaster, visited Auburn three times during the season and is expected to visit the Plains again this upcoming weekend. The Alabama commit tells Auburn Undercover that he loves Hugh Freeze’s energy. (Subscription required).

Another SEC commit that Auburn is trying to pursue is four-star quarterback [autotag]Marcel Reed[/autotag]. Reed, who had not appeared on Auburn’s radar until this week, will be in town for an official visit. Auburn joins [autotag]Texas A&M[/autotag] as programs trying to lure the Nashville product away from Lane Kiffin and Ole Miss.

Two others that will be in town this weekend will be Michigan State commit [autotag]Colton Hood[/autotag], and Miami commit [autotag]Connor Lew[/autotag]. Despite being committed elsewhere, Auburn has remained heavy in their pursuit.

2023 defensive line recruit decommits from Auburn

The three-star announced his decision on Twitter on Sunday.

Auburn’s 2023 recruiting class got a little lighter on Sunday.

Three-star defensive lineman [autotag]Jamarrion Harkless[/autotag], who committed to the Auburn Tigers on Sept. 18, announced on Sunday that he would be de-committing from Auburn. Harkless did not specify why only that it was something he “had” to do and that “everything happens for a reason.”

Harkless has had 21 offers from various schools, including Liberty — an offer he received while current Auburn head coach [autotag]Hugh Freeze[/autotag] was at the helm there. He’s also received offers from top schools like Georgia and Michigan, so it’s very likely Harkless can still find a spot in a noteworthy Power 5 program somewhere down the line.

Without Harkless, the Tigers currently sit as the No. 53 recruiting class in the nation for 2023 with 11 recruits. Freeze has work to do to get the Tigers a top class as they’ve had in years past, but seeing which recruits that former coach Bryan Harsin brought in will stick around or de-commit could be something to watch down the line.

3-star offensive lineman Gernorris Wilson commits to Auburn

Three-star offensive lineman Gernorris Wilson is Auburn’s second commit in two days and their second along the offensive line.

Auburn is starting to pick up momentum on the recruiting trail.

After landing a commitment from three-star defensive linrman [autotag]Jamarrion Harkless[/autotag] on Sunday, the Tigers landed three-star offensive lineman [autotag]Gernorris Wilson[/autotag] on Monday.

Wilson helps address Auburn’s major need along the offensive line and the staff believes he could play tackle or guard. This makes his commitment even bigger since Auburn needs help at both spots and could mean earlier playing time for the 6-foot-5, 285-pound Wilson.

The Lakeland, Florida native is ranked as the No. 1,145 overall player and No. 86 interior offensive lineman in the 247Sports Composite ranking. He is also the No. 162 player from Florida

He is the 10th member of Auburn’s recruiting class and second along the offensive line, joining four-star center Bradyn Joiner. He is the third member of Auburn’s recruiting class from Florida, four-star wide receiver Daquayvious Sorey and four-star edge Wilky Denaud are also from the Sunshine State.

Auburn lands commitment from 3-star DL Jamarrion Harkless

Auburn received some good news on Sunday when 3-star defensive lineman Jamarrion Harkless committed to the Tigers.

A day after a blowout loss to Penn State, Auburn received some much needed good news when three-star defensive lineman [autotag]Jamarrion Harkless[/autotag] announced his commitment to the Tigers.

Harkless, a former Illinois commit, is from Lexington, Kentucky, and picked the Tigers over Ole Miss and Illinois.

Measuring in at 6-feet-4, and 290-pounds, he projects best as a defensive tackle for Auburn. He is Auburn’s ninth commit overall and the third along the defensive line, joining four-star edge rushers Ashley Williams and Wilky Denaud.

He is ranked as the No. 88 defensive lineman in the country according to the 247Sports Composite ranking. He is also the No. 792 overall player and No. 8 player from Kentucky.

He is Auburn’s second commit in the past four days, four-star wide receiver Adam Hopkins committed to the Tigers on Thursday.

His commitment is a piece of good news on an otherwise uninspiring weekend for the Tigers where they were blown out 41-12 by the Nittany Lions. Not only was the loss in front of a packed Jordan-Hare, but several key Auburn targets were also in attendance for the disappointing loss.

Defensive tackle Jamarrion Harkless sets official visit to Auburn

Defensive tackle target Jamarrion Harkless will visit Auburn for their game against San Jose State.

Auburn is ramping up its pursuit of three-star defensive tackle [autotag]Jamarrion Harkless[/autotag] and it appears to be paying off.

Harkless, a former Illinois commit, has scheduled an official visit to Auburn. He will be visiting Auburn on Sept. 10 for the Tigers game against San Jose State.

Harkless is from Lexington, Kentucky, and backed off his commitment to Illinois earlier in August. Auburn is not the only SEC school in pursuit of the 6-foot-4, 290-pound Harkless. He will be taking an official visit to Ole Miss on Sept. 2.

Harkless is ranked as the No. 782 overall player and No. 86 defensive lineman in the 247Sports composite ranking. He is also ranked as the No. 9 player from Kentucky.

Auburn currently has commits from two four-star edge rushers in [autotag]Ashley Willians[/autotag] and [autotag]Wilky Denaud[/autotag] but is still looking for their first commitment from a defensive lineman.

Georgia football recruiting: Dawgs offer DL Jamarrion Harkless

Georgia football has helped class of 2023 defensive line prospect Jamarrion Harkless get a lot of more attention from major college football programs.

Georgia football recruiting has extended a scholarship offer to class of 2023 defensive line prospect Jamarrion Harkless. The Bulldogs’ offer to Harkless turned heads around the college football recruiting community as Harkless was unranked on many sites at the time.

Georgia offered Harkless, who is ranked as a three-star prospect on 247Sports, on April 13. The 6-foot-4, 290-pound defensive tackle received offers from LSU, Auburn, Kentucky, Louisville, and Michigan in the two days following Harkless’ offer from Georgia.

Harkless plays football for Frederick Douglass High School in Lexington, Kentucky. Will he look to stay in-state and attend Louisville or Kentucky?

Harkless has received immense recruiting attention since the 2021 high school football season. Before 2022, Harkless only had one scholarship offer from Eastern Kentucky. Now, he has his choice of several of the top programs in the country.

The three-star defensive tackle announced his scholarship offer from Georgia via Twitter:
