Clemson will again play host to some top prospects for Saturday’s 3:30 p.m. game against Furman in Death Valley.

Here are some of the bigger names The Clemson Insider has confirmed as planned visitors for the Clemson-Furman game.

A couple of headliners among the recruits expected to be in attendance are a five-star class of 2024 prospect in Jefferson (Ga.) linebacker Sammy Brown and a four-star class of 2023 prospect in Phenix City (Ala.) Central defensive end Tomarrion Parker.

Brown is the No. 1 linebacker in the 2024 class according to the 247Sports Composite rankings, which also tabs Parker as the No. 12 defensive lineman in the 2023 class.

Brown was contacted by multiple members of Clemson’s staff — including head coach Dabo Swinneydefensive coordinator/linebackers coach Wes Goodwin and co-defensive coordinator Mickey Conn – on Thursday, Sept. 1, when college coaches across the country could begin actively reaching out to junior prospects in the class of 2024.

“I heard from most of the defensive coaching staff, Coach Goodwin, Coach Conn, etc.,” Brown told The Clemson Insider shortly after. “I actually heard from Coach Swinney as well.”

Brown became the first prospect in the 2024 class to receive an offer from Clemson when he picked up the offer while on campus for the program’s underclassmen day on March 12. He then returned on April 6 to take in the Tigers’ final spring practice prior to their April 9 spring game, before most recently traveling back to campus for another visit during the Swinney Camp in June.

The 6-foot-2, 227-pound blue-chip recruit told TCI he is planning to visit Clemson again for its first home game of the 2022 season on Saturday, Sept. 10 vs. Furman.

“I think that we’re going to the Furman game (Saturday),” he said. “My parents went to Furman, so kinda lines up.”

As for Parker, after receiving an offer from Clemson on Aug. 11, he set up two visits to Death Valley — an unofficial visit for this Saturday and an official visit for the Syracuse game on Oct. 22.

A big-time receiver from the Garden State is slated to be on hand for Saturday’s game as well in Red Bank (N.J.) Catholic three-star Emanuel Ross, a 6-foot-2, 190-pound rising junior in the class of 2024 – who worked out at the Swinney Camp the weekend of June 10-12.

Ross certainly left Clemson impressed following his first-ever visit to the school.

“Honestly, the family environment – the school’s very family oriented,” Ross told TCI earlier this summer. “It’s not like a state college, so everything felt so close, and I just loved it.”

Among other notable recruits on Clemson’s anticipated guest list for Saturday’s game are Tampa (Fla.) Jesuit 2024 three-star linebacker Drew Woodaz, Charlotte (N.C.) Christian School 2024 RB Ryan Henley, Greenville (S.C.) 2024 WR Mac McLean, Lexington (S.C.) River Bluff 2025 QB Parker Murray and River Bluff (S.C.) 2025 K/P Tripp Bryant.

*Prospects like Chula Vista (Calif.) Mater Dei Catholic 2024 four-star cornerback Isaiah Buxton and Austin (Texas) Vandegrift 2024 offensive lineman Blake Frazier were invited to Saturday afternoon’s game but will be unable to attend.

Florida hosting 4-star Penn State DL decommit on official visit in October

One of Florida’s top targets in the class of 2023 has a busy fall schedule, but he’s got a date set aside for the Gators already.

After his trip to the University of Florida over the summer, four-star defensive lineman [autotag]Tomarrion Parker[/autotag] set a return date of October 15 with intentions to use up one of his five official visits. Steve Wiltfong of 247Sports confirmed those plans on Monday, nearly two months after the initial news broke.

A lot has happened in those two months, though. For starters, Parker committed to Penn State in late June and backed off that pledge in early August. Then there’s the fact that Florida has added 16 four-star commits to the class since Parker last visited, including five defensive linemen and an edge rusher.

On3’s recruiting prediction machine still favors the Nittany Lions at this point, but the Gators are a close second with no real competitors in third place. Wiltfong added that Parker plans to visit Clemson on October 22 and Tennessee during the first weekend of December for official visits. He also intends to stop by Clemson on September 10 and Texas A&M on October 29 for the Ole Miss game, but those will be unofficial visits.

The 247Sports composite ranks Parker at No. 100 overall and No. 12 among defensive linemen in the country, but the site’s individual rankings are far more bullish on him. He’s No. 49 overall on the Top247 and No. 4 at his position.

Gators pushing hard to flip this blue-chip edge committed to Penn State

The Gators are generating a lot of interest in this Cotton State standout currently committed to Penn State. Can they flip him?

Florida football has been rolling on the recruiting front with a flurry of recent signings that propelled the Orange and Blue into the top 10 of many of the most prestigious recruiting rankings.

While [autotag]Billy Napier[/autotag] and his staff have been focused on maximizing the returns from the deep prospect pool that resides in their own backyard, the Gators are not shying away from poaching from other programs either.

Four-star edge [autotag]Tomarrion Parker[/autotag], a member of the 2024 class out of Phenix City (Alabama) Central, is committed to the Penn State Nittany Lions. However, the 6-foot-4-inch, 245-pound defender re-opened his recruitment recently. That created a flood of interest in the blue-chipper’s talent, which included the Gators who appear to have an edge on the edge rusher.

Some of the schools in hot pursuit of the Cotton State prospect are the Georgia Bulldogs, Michigan State Spartans, Tennessee Volunteers and Clemson Tigers. The young student-athlete appears intent on doing his due diligence before finalizing his commitment.

“I feel like I want to take a few visits,” Parker told On3’s Chad Simmons. “Also, rethink some things, gather more information on teams and really sit down and focus in on what I want out of a program and what they can provide for me.

“I want to be fully committed into a team. If I’m not fully committed, I don’t want to be committed at all. I don’t want to do nothing out of the line, you know what I’m saying, make things bad on both ends.”

Parker is ranked No. 100 overall and No. 12 at his position nationally according to the 247Sports composite, while the On3 consensus has him at Nos. 129 and 18, respectively.

Two of his three crystal ball predictions from 247Sports are still held by Penn State while a third was awarded to Georgia. On3’s recruiting prediction machine has Florida second behind the Nittany Lions with a 25.2% chance of landing him. No other school has a greater than 1% chance for him.

The Clemson Insider has decided to take a relatively old concept and put a new spin on it. As we already introduced on our message board, TCI will field weekly recruiting mailbag questions, which will be answered in an article format. We’ll choose questions to answer and provide you with the most relevant information regarding Clemson recruiting.

Without further ado, we took a crack at answering some of your mailbag questions. It should be noted that the questions have been edited for clarity.

Q: Have we moved on from (Monroe) Freeling? Has he moved on from Clemson?

Clemson is no longer at the forefront of Monroe Freeling’s recruitment. For a while, the Tigers seemed to be the perceived favorite to land the Oceanside Collegiate Academy product, but as we know, things are fluid in recruiting.

To no fault of his own, Freeling was unable to make Clemson’s official visit weekend. It was his parents’ anniversary the weekend of June 3 and it unfortunately just didn’t work out with his schedule. That paved the way for the trio of Vandegrift (Texas) four-star Ian Reed, Permian (Texas) four-star Harris Sewell and Eagle’s Landing Christian Academy (Georgia) four-star Zechariah Owens to verbally pledge to Dabo Swinney’s program in the coming weeks.

While Clemson is set with taking three offensive linemen in the class of 2023, there’s been chatter that Thomas Austin could possibly take a fourth commit. Whether that would be Freeling hinges on a couple of things, but as of August, the likelihood that he’ll end up at Clemson has grown increasingly unlikely.

We know Clemson really likes the prospect, as Swinney and Co. have attended his basketball games and such, but that arrow that was once pointed at Clemson and since trended in another direction.

Freeling has made official visits to Notre Dame, Miami and Florida. Whether Freeling takes those remaining two officials remains to be seen, but the teams most heavily involved appear to be the latter programs mentioned, as well as Alabama and Georgia.

Q: Any traction with any RB?

It goes without saying, that Clemson continues to evaluate its options at the running back position.

A name that I’ve heard in some circles is Heights High (Kansas) four-star John Randle II. While he’s ranked as the No. 20 running back in the nation, per the 247Sports composite, you’re looking at a player whose recruitment is still waiting to take off.

I don’t know how much traction Clemson has with Randle if any, but he’s a name worth monitoring as he heads into his senior season.

Q: How many more do you think we’ll take before we shut it down?

This is always a fun question.

After Ronan Hanafin and Shelton Lewis committed last week, Clemson is now up to 20 total verbal commitments.

My best guess would be two or three more prospects, which would put Clemson’s class at either 22 or 23 commitments. Anything can happen between now and then, whether a player enters the transfer portal or decides to step away from the game like Landen Zanders did earlier this month.

As we know, these things tend to be fluid. That’s not to say that I expect a Clemson player to enter the transfer portal or anything of that nature. More so, we’d be naive to assume that the ever-changing landscape doesn’t affect roster turnover and the number of scholarship players that a program like Clemson has to work with at any given time.

Q: What are the biggest needs now?

Running back. Point blank.

While Clemson recently placed Domonique Thomas on scholarship, it’s worth noting that Keith Adams, Jr. is the last running back to commit to Clemson since Will Shipley did so on May 5, 2020. It’s a position that Clemson hasn’t had much success with on the recruiting trail as of late, just barely missing out on the likes of Trevor Etienne (Florida), Andrew Paul (Georgia) and Jeremiah Cobb (Auburn),

From what we’ve heard regarding CJ Spiller — he’s a good coach with the necessary recruiting chops. Clemson’s lack of movement at the position on the trail shouldn’t be an indictment of who he is as a coach. As we previously mentioned, Spiller did a nice job of identifying a guy like Paul, who was one of the best high school backs in the state of Texas.

Q: Any traction with Tomarrion Parker and a visit for the season?

Yes!

I answered this on our message board, but for our readers who didn’t get a chance to see this, Clemson has a lot of traction with Tomarrion Parker. The four-star defensive end out of Central (Alabama) is eyeing an official date of Oct. 22, which would be the weekend that Clemson plays host to Syracuse at Memorial Stadium.

There is mutual interest here, as Parker wants to take a long, extended look at Clemson, now that the Tigers have extended an offer.

More on Parker here:

Newly offered 4-star Alabama DE dishes on Clemson offer, talks official visit plans

Q: Are we done at WR with the Ronan (Hanafin) commitment or will we continue to push for Tyler Williams to sway him away from the Dawgs?

As of now, Clemson is only planning to take two wide receivers in the class of 2023 and some pretty good ones at that. With Sunday’s commitment, Buckingham & Browne (Massachusetts) four-star wide receiver Ronan Hanafin joined Rockwall (Texas) four-star Noble Johnson, as the two receivers that Clemson will be taking in this class.

Earlier this year, some prospects informed TCI that Clemson was looking to add up to three wide receivers in this class because it was likely going to be losing a number of wideouts after the 2022 season. It’s entirely possible that Clemson’s thinking has changed since the end of January.

That would make Clemson an unlikely suitor for Lakeland (Florida) four-star Tyler Williams, but my hunch is that has more to do with his recruitment trending in the direction of Georgia and less to do with numbers. Williams sent a commitment date of Sept. 27 and will pick between Clemson, Georgia, Texas A&M, South Carolina and Ole Miss.

Williams has one official visit remaining and with a month and change until he renders a college decision, the University of Miami is rumored to be pushing for him to take his final visit to Coral Gables.

Clemson hosted Williams during the program’s official visit weekend from June 3-5. From what we gathered, Williams mostly kept to himself during the weekend’s festivities. That’s not a knock on Williams, who has spoken very highly of Clemson in the interviews he’s done in the past, but rather an observation from a source that we wanted to pass along.

Many in the industry have Williams pegged as a Georgia guy, but that remains to be seen, as other programs continue to push for his commitment. I just wouldn’t expect him to land at Clemson at this time.

Q: Next possible verbal?

I’m not going to make any projections at the moment, but the next possible commitment in terms of announcement timing is North Gwinnett (Georgia) four-star defensive lineman Kayden McDonald. The expectation is that he’ll be taking an official visit to Clemson sometime this fall.

Newly offered 4-star Alabama DE dishes on Clemson offer, talks official visit plans

Dabo Swinney’s staff is rather unlikely to offer a prospect that’s already pledged their commitment elsewhere. That’s why Swinney and Co. waited until after Phenix City (Alabama) Central High’s Tomarrion Parker walked back his pledge from Penn State to make him an official offer.

Parker — a 6-foot-4, 250-pound rising senior — reported the offer from the Tigers via social media this past Thursday, Aug. 11. He currently ranks as the nation’s No. 4 defensive lineman and the No. 49 overall prospect in the 2023 class, per 247Sports.

“I always wanted to say that Clemson offered,” Parker told The Clemson Insider in a phone interview Saturday evening. “We’ve been talking for a little while and once I decommitted, some of the commits, some of my friends that I know — Peter Woods and (Christopher) Vizzina — they hit me up and they was like, ‘Bro, would you be interested in Clemson?’

“Are you kidding me? Of course!”

Once Parker expressed interest in Clemson, Lemanski Hall and Nick Eason became more involved in his recruitment. Shortly thereafter, the Tigers pulled the trigger on a scholarship offer.

“I was very excited about that,” Parker added.

What has Clemson’s defensive ends coach’s message been to Parker, since the Tigers have re-entered the picture?

“He’s losing four guys (Xavier Thomas, KJ Henry, Myles Murphy and Justin Mascoll) this year to the NFL, so he needs players who are ready to come in and play early, play right away,” Parker said, “and he feels like I’m a guy that can do that. He’s gonna recruit me hard and I really like that and respect that — saying that the defensive room is open next year. That’s a great opportunity to go into.”

Parker will certainly be keeping an eye on the production of the defensive ends mentioned above and how they develop as the season goes.

“I definitely rock with Coach Hall and Coach Eason,” Parker continued. “We’ve been talking for well over a year now. We’ve gotten to know each other real well. He knows my family real well and we talk all the time. We’ve been talking every day since I decommitted and before that, whenever we was talking, we was talking constantly. I really like Coach Hall. He’s a great coach. I feel like if I was to go to Clemson, he could get me to where I want to be in life.”

In addition to Hall, both Woods and Vizzina are coming after Parker and coming after him hard. The duo of Yellowhammer State five-stars is looking to add another Alabama native to Clemson’s 2023 recruiting class, especially after Hunter Osborne elected to commit to the University of Alabama over Swinney’s program earlier this month.

“Me and Peter talked about this a long time ago,” Parker said. “We talked about this last year. Since some things have started happening, I could definitely make that happen. But right now, I’m just taking my time with everything. Me and Peter talked about this a long time ago.”

Parker made it clear that his original commitment to Penn State wasn’t tied to him wanting to be committed prior to his senior season. Now that he’s back to reevaluating his options, it’s worth noting that Parker has four remaining official visits.

He “definitely will” use one of those four remaining official visits to Clemson. Parker has a bye the weekend of Oct. 22, which just happens to be when Clemson plays host to Syracuse at Memorial Stadium.

“I’m gonna try to see if my dad can take off that weekend, so we can get down there,” he said.

Parker said that the University of Tennessee, Georgia and Florida will be getting those other three remaining official visits.

A defensive line prospect, fresh off a decommitment from a Big Ten School, reported an offer from Clemson via social media Thursday.

Phenix City (Ala.) Central four-star Tomarrion Parker announced the offer on Twitter.

Parker (6-4, 250) decommitted from Penn State on Tuesday. He had been committed to the Nittany Lions since June 21.

Parker is the No. 4 defensive lineman and No. 49 overall prospect in the 2023 class, per 247Sports.

4-star DE Tomarrion Parker decommits from Penn State

Four-star edge rusher Tomarrion Parker has decommitted to the Penn State Nittany Lions. Now, UGA, Florida, Tennessee, and more are in the mix.

Elite classs of 2023 edge rusher Tomarrion Parker has decommitted from the Penn State Nittany Lions. The Georgia Bulldogs were among the top schools recruiting Parker before he committed to Penn State.

Florida, Alabama, Tennessee, and Michigan State are other schools in the mix for the four-star defensive line recruit. Parker has official visits set with Florida and Tennessee this fall.

Tomarrion Parker plays high school football for Central High School in Phenix City, Alabama. Parker is on the same high school team as five-star Georgia commit AJ Harris.

Phenix City is located quite close to Columbus, Georgia. Athens is not a long drive from Phenix City.

Parker is ranked the No. 12 defensive lineman in the rising senior class and the No. 100 prospect overall. Parker is a rising senior with scholarship offers from many of the top college football programs in the nation.

The 6-foot-4, 250-pound defensive lineman bulked up his frame, which should help him be more effective against the run. Parker has the ability to play right away as a freshman in college.

On tape, Parker is quick to get around the edge and shows good closing speed. Parker’s best attribute is his ability to rush the passer. He shows good effort and pursuit and projects as a 3-4 outside linebacker or as a 4-3 defensive end depending on the defensive scheme.

Parker’s decommitment is a tough loss for Penn State and head coach James Franklin. The Nittany Lions have the No. 10 ranked recruiting class of 2023.

Where Penn State’s Class of 2023 ranks nationally after latest decommitment

Where does Penn State’s Class of 2023 rank after this week’s latest recruiting development?

Penn State’s Class of 2023 had been on track to finish the recruiting cycle in the top 10, marking the first time in program history during the recruiting analysis era the Nittany Lions have pulled in back-to-back top 10 recruiting classes. That accomplishment appears to be on the edge after Penn State lost a commitment from a four-star recruit this week.

Penn State went down a commitment from its Class of 2023 on Tuesday with the decommittment of defensive lineman Tomarrion Parker. The Alabama native is believed to be exploring some recruiting options within the sEC with Florida, Georgia, and Tennessee among those said to be in the mix after Parker backed away from his commitment to Penn State. It is reported Penn State is not necessarily out of the running entirely, but these types of stories rarely leads  recruit coming back to the commitment.

So where does this latest development leave Penn State’s recruiting ranking now?

[lawrence-related id=21553]

According to the team composite rankings produced by 247Sports, Penn State now owns the nation’s No. 10 recruiting class in the Class of 2023. Penn State. The Nittany Lions are down two spots nationally after starting the month ranked No. 8.

LSU and Miami have moved ahead of Penn State with the Tigers now sitting at No. 8 and the Hurricanes up to No. 9.

Penn State also checks in at No. 10 nationally on the On3 team rankings for 2023. Penn State has a lower ranking from Rivals, with the Nittany Lions coming in at No. 12.

Despite the slight decline in the team rankings, Penn State is still lining up a heck of a recruiting class, and they still own the second-best recruiting haul in the Big Ten behind Ohio State. And there is still time for more recruiting news between now and the beginning of the early signing period in December.

Penn State loses commitment from four-star Tomarrion Parker

Penn State loses commitment from four-star defensive lineman in Class of 2023.

One of Penn State’s many quality additions in the Class of 2023 is no longer currently on board with the Nittany Lions. Tomarrion Parker, a four-star defensive lineman from Alabama, has reportedly backed off his commitment to Penn State.

Parker committed to Penn State in late June, but Chad Simmons from On3 reports other schools remained in pursuit after Parker supposedly closed his recruiting process down. Parker’s commitment at the time was considered a nice recruiting victory out of the SEC recruiting grounds as a handful of SEC schools were hoping to land his commitment.

Now, with Parker no longer committed to Penn State, those SEC suitors are officially back in play. Among the schools said to be interested include Florida, Georgia, and Tennessee. Florida and Georgia have each managed to flip one Penn Stae commitment already in this recruiting cycle, and odds may be increasing it happens again.

[lawrence-related id=21553]

According to the On3 report from Simmons, Penn State has not been fully removed from the recruiting process for Parker, but decisions like these rarely lead to a player coming back to his original commitment.

Parker is a four-star recruit according to 247Sports from Phenix City, Alabama. He took an official visit to Penn State on June 17, and committed to the program within a week. He reportedly had an official visit lined up with the Florida Gators in October the weekend the Gators are scheduled to host LSU in Gainesville.

The loss of Parker from the projected Class of 2023 drops Penn State’s national recruiting ranking as a result, although Penn State still owns a top 10 class according to the 247Sports composite team rankings at No. 10, for now.

Crystal ball predicts four-star offensive tackle to Penn State

Recruiting expert casts crystal ball pick for Penn State for this four-star offensive tackle

It is clear to see that Penn State has placed a good amount of emphasis on improving its offensive line depth and quality in the Class of 2023 recruiting cycle. And after spending a decent amount of time beginning to fill in other areas on the depth chart, another four-star offensive lineman could be making his way to Happy Valley.

[autotag]Evan Link[/autotag] is a four-star offensive tackle according to the 247Sports composite player ratings from Washington D.C., and it is beginning to look as though Penn State is the early favorite to secure his verbal commitment.

On Tuesday, Lions247 insider Tyler Calvaruso case the first official crystal ball prediction for Link on 247Sports. Calvarusso’s prediction favored Penn State. It is worth noting at the time of the crystal ball prediction going on record, Calvarusso was 16-for16 with his crystal ball predictions in the Class of 2023, including a number of recent Penn State commits such as [autotag]DaKaari Nelson[/autotag], [autotag]Tomarrion Parker[/autotag], and [autotag]King Mack[/autotag].

While still early to form a real outlook, the On3 recruiting prediction machine also gives Penn State a sizable advantage on the recruiting trail with a 52.7% chance of landing Link’s verbal commitment. Stanford is second in the running according to On3’s prediction machine with a 31.0% chance of receiving Link’s commitment.

In addition to Penn State and Stanford, Michigan appears to be the other viable contender on the recruiting trail for Link. Link visited all three schools in the month of June with Penn State getting the first visit, followed by Michigan a week later and culminating with an official visit to Stanford after that.

No commitment date for Link has been confirmed at this time, but this does set a positive tone for the Nittany Lions as we inch closer to a decision being finalized.
