Todd Gurley ‘mad as hell’ about scoring late TD, giving Lions time to win game

Former Georgia football RB Todd Gurley is ‘mad as hell’ about scoring a late TD that gave Lions’ QB Matthew Stafford time to win game.

Todd Gurley might’ve had his first touchdown he’s ever regretted scoring this past Sunday against the Detroit Lions.  With 1:04 left in the game, Detroit out of timeouts and the Atlanta Falcons down 16-14 to the Lions, Gurley ran a touchdown in on first and goal.

Obviously the Flacons needed to score to win but they also left too much time on the clock for Lions’ quarterback Matthew Stafford to mount a 75-yard drive leading to a T.J. Hockenson touchdown as time expired.

Gurley clearly tried to stop himself from going in but his momentum carried him into the end zone accidentally.

“I was mad as hell,” said Gurley on the touchdown. “I was trying not to (score). My momentum took me in.”

This was a mental mistake from Gurley that he was very unhappy about.  Atlanta could have easily killed the remaining time on the clock and kicked a game winning field goal as time expired to win by one point.

“It’s one of them unfortunate situations. I’ve been in plenty of those situations since my rookie year, about six or seven. I’ve always got down, just an unfortunate one right there.”

“We talked about it in the huddle, probably a couple plays prior to that,” Gurley said. “And I know that, like I said, I’ve been in multiple situations over my years in the league. Just one of those unfortunate ones.”

Even though Atlanta’s defense let up a 75-yard drive for a touchdown in just one minute, Gurley owned up for his mistake and took all the blame for the loss.

“I’ll man up, take the responsibility. Tried to go down but I didn’t,” said Gurley. “Trying is not good enough, so just got to do better on my behalf.”

Gurley and the Falcons now drop to 1-6 as they face off against the Carolina Panthers in Charlotte this Thursday night.

Detroit Lions pivotal play of the game: Gurley score allows Lions comeback

The Detroit Lions beat the Atlanta Falcons and it was a mistake committed by Todd Gurley that ended up being the pivotal play this week

WHAT. A. GAME!

The Detroit Lions pulled off a miracle to beat the Atlanta Falcons 23-22 — with Matthew Stafford throwing an 11-yard game-winning touchdown pass to T.J. Hockenson, capped off by a go-ahead extra point from Matt Prater as time expired.

The Lions run defense showed up again this week, only allowing 66 yards on the ground, making the Falcons’ offense one-dimensional. The Lions did allow the Falcons to sustain long drives, but most of the day, they were able to hold their own and made key plays to give the Lions’ offense more opportunities.

The Lions offense did have some questionable play-calling, especially in the run game, but most good old No. 9 stepped up in the spotlight when it mattered. At the end of the day, the Lions’ players didn’t falter down the stretch and brought home a victory.

The pivotal play

For a minute, it looked like the curtains had closed on a potential Lions comeback.

After a Falcons first down conversion and the Lions out of timeouts, the Lions defense made the decision to allow Falcons running back Todd Gurley to score in order to get the ball back into the hands of the Lions offense.

Falcons coach Raheem Morris commented after the game that the plan was for Gurley to take go down on the one-yard line, but as Gurley tried to stay out of the endzone, he lost his balance and fell into the end zone for the touchdown.

That produced a rare NFL moment where the defense celebrated an opponent scoring a touchdown:

That score gave the Lions offense 1:04 left on the game clock to muster a drive to win this game potentially.

It was a long shot, but don’t tell that to Stafford. He drove the offense down the field bringing back memories of previous 4th quarter comebacks and showing glimpses of what we have been begging for this season.

After completing a couple of nice passes to Hockenson and Danny Amendola along with some spikes sprinkled in for clock management, Stafford found Golladay deep in the red zone on a beautiful 29-yard pass to put the Lions within reach if evening the game up.

There was a heart-stopping moment when they reviewed the catch — and bad memories of the 10-second run-off were running through every Lions fans heads — but it was clear Golladay made the catch. Luckily when the ruling came back, the play stood and the Lions would get the ball with just three seconds remaining.

After another spike gave the Lions more time to come with the perfect play, and as the clock expired, Stafford weaved his way through pressure and fired a dart to Hockenson to tie the game.

Amendola was flagged for a bone head unsportsmanlike conduct penalty — he took his helmet off while on the field — making the extra point a 48-yarder instead of a 33-yarder, but was no problem for Prater as he sailed it through the uprights and gave the Lions a sweet comeback victory to get them to .500 on the season.

Celebrate the win, Lions fans.

Some areas need addressing, but it was wonderful to see vintage Stafford and the run defense continuing their dominance. The Lions will ride their two-game winning streak back home to face the Indianapolis Colts in Week 8.

How did a Todd Gurley TD backfire on the Falcons in loss to the Lions?

Todd Gurley’s touchdown gave the ball back to Detroit and it ruined Atlanta’s day.

You are not seeing things. The Detroit Lions wanted the officials to rule an Atlanta Falcons run by Todd Gurley a touchdown.

And the officials obliged and the accidental scored wound up leading to doom for the Atlanta Falcons against the Detroit Lions on Sunday.

All the Falcons needed was to make sure they didn’t score a TD and hit a chip-shot field goal to walk off with a 17-16 win over the Lions.

However, when Gurley found paydirt, Atlanta had the lead and after a 2-point conversion it was 22-17.

Problem is it also gave Matthew Stafford the ball and 74 seconds to drive what turned out to be 75 yards.

The veteran QB, who was once a No. 1 overall pick from Georgia, did exactly that, finding T.J. Hockenson from 11 yards for the game-tying TD as the clock hit 0:00. Matt Prater’s PAT gave the Lions a 23-22 win.

Lions stun Falcons with last-second comeback

The Lions move to 3-3 on the season, right in the middle of the NFC playoff picture.

The Lions absolutely stunned the Falcons on Sunday afternoon after Matthew Stafford hit T.J. Hockenson as time expired to give Detroit a 23-22 win.

Todd Gurley could have put the Falcons in position for the win, but instead of going down at the one-yard line with just over a minute left in the game, Gurley scored a touchdown to put the Falcons up four. Had Gurley stayed out of the end zone, the Falcons would have been able to milk the clock and attempt a field goal as time expired.

Instead, Stafford was able to march the Lions down the field in the final minute for the win.

Stafford threw for 340 yards and a touchdown in the win. Kenny Golladay hauled in six passes for 114 yards.

The win moves the Lions to 3-3 on the season, right in the middle of the playoff picture in the NFC.

This was Detroit’s third win in its last four games.

Next up for the Lions are Philip Rivers and the Indianapolis Colts. That game will be in Detroit.

Todd Gurley accidentally scored a touchdown that led to a last-second Falcons loss

Another improbable loss for the Falcons.

It’s not too often that you see a defense actually celebrate an opponent’s touchdown, but that’s exactly what happened during Sunday’s game between the Atlanta Falcons and Detroit Lions.

The Falcons — having already blown two double-digit leads this season and fired head coach Dan Quinn — trailed the Lions by two but faced a first-and-goal situation with a minute to go. The Lions had burned all their timeouts, so all Atlanta really needed to do was run out the clock and kick a game-winning chip shot at the end.

In fact, the only way the Falcons could realistically lose the game was by scoring a touchdown. So, you’ll never guess what happened (OK, you will):

Todd Gurley scored a touchdown.

Gurley took the handoff and realized well too late into the run that the Lions were letting him score. He tried to give himself up shy of the goal line, but Gurley wasn’t able to keep himself from breaking the plane.

The Falcons would convert on the two-point try and take a six-point lead. But still, the Lions had a chance now. They needed to score a touchdown with a PAT to win.

With one play remaining in the game, Matthew Stafford connected with T.J. Hockenson for the tying touchdown. Matt Prater would make a long extra-point try to win the game. The Falcons lost, 23-22.

Under normal circumstances, this would be a devastating and comical loss for the Falcons — a kind of loss that has become all too familiar. After all, if there is a statistical possibility of a loss, the Falcons will find a way.

But with the Falcons now at 1-6 and Trevor Lawrence or Justin Fields a possibility in the draft, Falcons fans will be able to live with that defeat.

Falcons to wear new gradient uniforms against Lions on Sunday

In Week 7, the Falcons will unveil the gradient version of their new design against the visiting Detroit Lions.

Former Georgia RB D’Andre Swift hitting stride as Lions come to town

The Atlanta Falcons released running back Devonta Freeman in the offseason and instead of drafting his replacement, the team signed free agent Todd Gurley to carry the load.

The Atlanta Falcons released running back Devonta Freeman in the offseason and instead of drafting his replacement, the team signed free agent Todd Gurley to carry the load.

So far, Gurley has been solid. In six games, he’s racked up 422 rushing yards and five touchdowns. Another former Georgia star stole the show in Week 6, though. Lions rookie D’Andre Swift, a second-round pick in 2020, had a breakout performance on Sunday.

On just 14 carries, Swift rushed for 116 yards and two touchdowns in Detroit’s win over the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Splitting time with Adrian Peterson and Kerryon Johnson in the Lions’ backfield, Swift had only 12 total carries entering Week 6. That figures to change when Detroit visits Atlanta this weekend.

The Falcons had their chance to select all three of the draft’s top running backs — Clyde Edwards-Helaire, Jonathan Taylor and Swift — but felt good enough about Gurley, along with backups Ito Smith and Brian Hill, to pass on them.

So far the team is just 1-5, but Gurley hasn’t been the problem in 2020.

Falcons RB Todd Gurley named NFL Ground Player of the Week

Running back Todd Gurley recorded his first 100-yard rushing game of the season on Sunday during the Falcons’ 23-16 loss to the Carolina Panthers.

Running back Todd Gurley recorded his first 100-yard rushing game of the season on Sunday during the Falcons’ 23-16 loss to the Carolina Panthers. With head coach Dan Quinn and general manager Thomas Dimitroff getting fired, though, Gurley’s big Week 5 performance was somewhat overlooked.

On just 14 rushing attempts, Gurley went for 121 yards and a touchdown on 8.6 yards per carry. That was enough for the former Georgia standout to win this week’s FedEx Ground Player of the Week.

Gurley has bee steady this season, but the Falcons’ defensive limitations hasn’t allowed the former All-Pro RB to touch the ball as much as the team would like.

For the season, Gurley has rushed 79 times for 375 yards (4.7 Y.P.A.) and five touchdowns, while adding eight catches for 38 receiving yards. Check out his 35-yard touchdown run against the Panthers in Week 5 below.

Fantasy Football Market Report: Week 6

Looking at the fantasy football options who are quickly gaining and losing value for your fantasy football team.

It would appear the NFL doesn’t have a real plan to prepare for potential positive tests to COVID-19. The league office literally shifted the balance of power in the AFC when it pushed back the Titans-Steelers game to Week 7. The reason? Pittsburgh, who had no positive COVID tests, were supposed to have a Bye in Week 8 – perhaps an acknowledgment that the both the Steelers and Ravens deserve a Bye week after their semiannual blood bath. But, when the time came to pull the plug on the game – they had a three-game fix. Pittsburgh? You just had your Bye week despite practicing and preparing for four days. Oh yeah…and you get to play Tennessee in Week 7 and the Ravens get a Bye heading into your first meeting of the year.

How is that fair? In a COVID world, fair isn’t a buzz phrase.

Switch No. 2 came over the weekend when the Denver-New England game had to be rescheduled. That move required juggling eight different games, nine teams and multiple Bye week changes (of which the Broncos and Patriots informed they had worked through).

It would seem the fact of the matter is that, without a bubble to protect teams, this won’t be the last of the postponements.

Fantasy owners may end up without some of their top stars during the season and into the fantasy playoffs in a season likely to be pushed into the mythical Week 18 (or 19) that may be coming just to get a full regular season done.

Do I mind Tuesday or Wednesday night games? I love it! I’d be happy with a couple staggered-time NFL games every day of the week. But there are only going to be so many more schedule-juggling opportunities available once teams have their scheduled bye week and the opportunity goes away.

2020 has been one of the craziest years on record for many disparate reasons. The NFL was putting up a front that The Shield could rise above a pandemic. It’s looking like that is getting closer to impossible and the result may end up seeing fantasy football teams ruined by non-injury related changes to the 2020 schedule.

Here is the Week 6 Fantasy Market Report:

Fantasy Football Risers

Derek Carr, QB, Las Vegas Raiders

Over the last four games, few have been as effective a fantasy quarterback in the league as Carr. He has thrown for 1,200 yards and 10 touchdowns – never less than 261 yards and never less than two TDs in any of them. He still isn’t being viewed as a big-time fantasy QB, but given that Carr has done what he’s done against the Saints, Patriots, Bills and Chiefs, he’s making a statement people are starting to hear – whether by force or choice.

Todd Gurley, RB, Atlanta Falcons

He was available in some leagues to be a very late RB2 or even RB3 for an aggressive owner looking to stockpile. That came despite Gurley being the ultimate fantasy scoring machine on the ground when he was on the field. He has stayed healthy for the Falcons and, while he isn’t the 20-carry a game workhorse he was with the Rams, he is averaging 16 carries a game, 4.7 yards a carry and has scored five touchdowns, including four in the last three. He’s making himself almost impossible to bench.

Robert Tonyan, TE, Green Bay Packers

As the Packers return from their Bye week, it’s difficult to ignore what the alleged third-string tight end is doing in Green Bay. While Jace Sternberger and Marcedes Lewis are the bigger names, in the last three games, Tonyan has caught 12 passes for 173 yards and five touchdowns – at least one in each game and all in the red zone. Even when Davante Adams is back and dominating, Aaron Rodgers will have an eye on Tonyan if he needs a touchdown.

Andy Dalton, QB, Dallas Cowboys

It’s sad when one man’s tragedy is another man’s opportunity. But, with Dak Prescott gone for the year, Dalton is inheriting a fantasy God spot. A great running back to keep defenses honest and three electric wide receivers that can do a lot of damage deep downfield. He couldn’t have asked for a better position to be in, although nobody wanted him to be in it.

Rodrigo Blankenship, PK, Indianapolis Colts

While I rarely endorse kickers as fantasy studs, what every owner is looking for in a kicker is seven or more points every week. Kickers can often be the difference between winning and losing a tight game and, if your kicker can produce double digits with any regularity, you have a quiet weapon in your arsenal. In five career games with the Colts, Hot Rod’s point totals are 8-14-10-13-11. No other kicker in the league can brag up that sort of consistency.

Fantasy Football Fallers

Philip Rivers, QB, Indianapolis Colts

If your kicker is a riser, especially one without a field goal of more than 44 yards, your offense is dying in scoring position. That is the Rivers’ led Colts offense. At a time of record-setting scoring, Rivers has four touchdown passes in five games (one in four games and none in the other) and, over his last four games, is averaging just 216 yards. The Colts have playoff potential, but not because of Old Man Rivers.

Brandin Cooks, WR, Houston Texans

What? Why is Cooks on this list? Fantasy football is played week to week, game to game – not by overall point totals. In the season opener, he was in a lot of lineups and caught just two passes for 20 yards, while Will Fuller was dominant. He was benched by most for Week 2 and caught five passes for 95 yards. He was back in lineups and put together one game with three catches for 23 yards and the next with no catches. Back on most fantasy benches, he caught eight passes for 161 yards and a TD Sunday. He’s putting up big days, just rarely in your starting lineup.

Malcolm Brown, RB, Los Angeles Rams

One of the surprises of Week 1 when he was dominant on the ground (18-79-2), not only has he lost his featured back spot to Darrell Henderson, in Sunday’s game, he had fewer carries than both Henderson and Cam Akers. After a big Week 1, he hasn’t had more than 11 carries in any game, 38 or less in each of the last three and no touchdowns since Week 1. He’s back to being borderline waiver wire fodder.

Evan Engram, TE, New York Giants

He was expected to be the Giants secret weapon this season – loaded with talent and downfield ability. However, through five games, he has posted more than 35 receiving yards just once and his only touchdown came on a run. He was drafted to be an every-week fantasy starter and likely still is in TE-mandatory leagues. But, he has brought next to nothing in too many weeks to ignore.

Jordan Howard, RB, Miami Dolphins

After showing a lot of toughness and prowess in Chicago and Philadelphia, Howard came to Miami with the chance to be the primary back and provide a power element to Miami’s offense. In his first three games, he scored a touchdown in each, but, through four games, he had just 14 yards on 18 carries. It was enough that he was a healthy scratch last weekend. You don’t hit bottom as a fantasy player much more than that.
