No. 17 Texas dominates West Virginia 75-59 behind excellent guard play

Texas starts off Big 12 play with a statement victory over West Virginia.

Chris Beard could not have asked for a better performance from his team to start Big 12 conference play. Texas totally dismantled West Virginia from start to finish.

West Virginia had no answers for Texas after getting news that star player Taz Sherman would miss the game due to COVID-19 protocols. Sherman has averaged over 20 points per game this season.

Senior guard Courtney Ramey started the game on fire, scoring eight points in the first ten minutes of the game. His three-pointer to break a 14-14 tie kicked off an 18-2 scoring run for the Horns.

Ramey and Marcus Carr had an excellent sequence at the end of the first half to keep Texas in total control of the game.

Carr finished with 20 points, four rebounds and two assists. His best game as a Longhorn despite some rumors of a possible transfer this week.

If Texas gets more performances like today’s from Carr and the Texas backcourt, they will be a tough team to beat.

As a team, Texas forced 21 turnovers and shot 94% from the foul line. A good formula for more success down the road.

Key stats:

  • G Marcus Carr: 20 points, two assists, four rebounds and two steals
  • G Courtney Ramey: 15 points, four rebounds and two assists
  • G Andrew Jones: 14 points, three rebounds
  • F Timmy Allen: Eight points, six rebounds and three steals

No. 17 Texas takes down Stanford 60-53 in Las Vegas

No. 17 Texas charges past Stanford behind big days from Jones and Allen.

It is better to win ugly than to lose pretty and that is exactly what Texas did on Sunday against the Stanford Cardinal.

For the first 17 minutes of the game, the Longhorns and Cardinal showed very little separation. Texas then put their foot on the gas to close out the half up 34-27.

The Horns kept that momentum and came out of halftime firing. Texas took advantage of a few turnovers to go on a 13-0 run, taking a commanding lead into the 10-minute mark.

Stanford clawed back into the game as Texas went on a six-minute scoring drought.

Texas held on to win 60-53 despite the late surge from Stanford.

The story of the game was the turnovers. Texas played aggressively on defense and it showed as they forced 22 Standford turnovers. While the Texas guards did not light it up in the box score, they did a good job of playing clean basketball and limiting turnovers of their own.

Key stats:

  • G Andrew Jones: 13 points, four rebounds
  • F Timmy Allen: 11 points, five rebounds and three steals
  • F Dylan Disu: 11 points, four rebounds
  • Team: 22 forced turnovers

Texas will have two more games before entering Big 12 conference play against West Virginia on New Years Day.

Marcus Carr leads No. 7 Texas past Sam Houston

No. 7 Texas takes down Sam Houston in its first game at Gregory Gym since 1977.

No. 7 Texas played a game at Gregory Gym for the first time since 1977. Over 3,000 students watched the Horns take down Sam Houston 73-57.

Texas guard Marcus Carr finally snapped out of his slump. Carr paced the Longhorns with 19 points, four assists and three rebounds. In his previous three games, Carr only had nine points on 4-14 shooting.

Carr was not the only Texas guard to play well. Andrew Jones and Courtney Ramey each had 14 points of their own. The seniors have been a big part of the early success Texas has had thus far.

Timmy Allen had another double-digit scoring night. Allen was effective in getting to the free-throw line where he went 8-10 at the line. He finished with 12 points and a team-high seven assists.

The Longhorns will need better interior play if they want to compete against elite competition. The Bearkats were able to make some plays in the paint vs the Texas defense and even won the rebounding battle 29 to 27.

Notable stats:

  • G Marcus Carr: 19 points, four-assist and three rebounds
  • G Andrew Jones: 14 points, four steals
  • G Courtney Ramey: 14 points, two-assist
  • F Timmy Allen: 12 points, seven assists and five rebounds

Texas Basketball: Horns take down Cal Baptist 68-44

Jones, Allen lead texas to a 68-44 win over Cal Baptist.

No 8. Texas capped off the Abe Lemons Classic with their third straight convincing win. Texas improved to 4-1 after a 68-44 win over Cal Baptist.

Texas played a very complete game on both sides of the ball. Chris Beard said postgame “that was our dest defensive game of the year.” The Horns forced 23 Cal Baptist turnovers and held the Lancers to just 2-16 from three-point range.

Seniors Andrew Jones and Timmy Allen led the Longhorns offensively with 15 points each. Allen also had eight rebounds and three assists while Jones added five assists of his own.

It was a big night for senior guard Courtney Ramey as well. Ramey scored 12 points and grabbed five rebounds. Early in the second half, he hit a mid-range jumper to reach the 1,000 point mark on his career.

Texas is still waiting for Minnesota transfer Marcus Carr to hit his stride. Carr is 4-14 with only nine points during Texas’ three-game win streak. When the Longhorns get Carr going, the offense should be difficult to stop.

Texas will move over to Gregory Gym on Monday to take on the Sam Houston State Bearkats.

No. 8 Texas cruises past San Jose State 79-45

Texas improves to 3-1 on the season.

No. 8 Texas rolled by San Jose State 79-45 to improve to 3-1 on the young season.

Texas led 47-17 at halftime. Chris Beard’s defense was aggressive out of the gates forcing a season-high 19 first half turnovers, the best defensive performance of the season thus far.

Timmy Allen and Tre Mitchell once again paced the Longhorn offense. Allen finished with 17 points as Mitchell was right behind him at 14. Allen and Mitchell are proving to be the go-to guys as Texas continues to find its identity as a team.

Texas Basketball: Tre Mitchell leads Horns past Northern Colorado 62-49

The Horns bounce back as Tre Mitchell leads Texas past Northern Colorado 62-49.

Texas bounced back from their loss to No. 1 Gonzaga with a solid 62-49 win over Northern Colorado.

Tre Mitchell was the star of the show for the Horns tonight. He showed off his unique offensive skill set scoring 16 points with four offensive rebounds.

Mitchell got going early on this three-ball assisted by Courtney Ramey:

He was not the only member of the Texas frontcourt to have a big day. Timmy Allen had 10 points along with a team-high eight rebounds. Allen has now scored in doubles figures in back-to-back games.

Rebounding has been an issue during the first two games, but Texas showed improvement in that department tonight.

Winning the rebounding matchup was vital for Texas as they had a bit of an off-shooting night. The Longhorns shot a season-low 42% on field goals and were only 4-18 from behind the arc.

Despite the win, Chris Beard was disappointed in the second half performance. Texas was outscored 34-25 including a Northern Colorado 8-0 run with three minutes left in the game.

The new-look Longhorns are still trying to find an identity on both sides of the ball. Tonight was a step in the right direction.

Texas will now prepare to play San Jose State on Saturday at the Erwin Center.

Drew Timme leads No. 1 Gonzaga past No. 5 Texas 86-74

Gonzaga cruises by Texas behind 37 points from Timme.

Top-ranked Gonzaga was too much for No. 5 Texas. The Zags controlled the game from the start taking down the Horns 86-74.

Texas is now 0-12 all-time versus No. 1 teams. Gonzaga has not lost a home game since 2018.

The Texas frontcourt had no answer for star forward Drew Timme. Timme scored 37 points on 15 of 19 shooting. The Texas natives 37 points was his career-high.

For this team to reach their lofty preseason expectations, the frontcourt has to play better.

Timmy Allen played well for Texas as he paced the Horns with 18 points and six rebounds.

Kentucky transfer Devin Askew was another bright spot for the Longhorns. Askew showed off his toughness and ability to get to the basket late in the game, providing a bit of a late spark.

Chris Beard does not see this loss as the end of the world.

Texas will look to bounce back against Northern Colorado on Wednesday.

WATCH: Texas basketball team arrives in Spokane ahead of Gonzaga game

Texas basketball arrives in Spokane for a top-five showdown with Gonzaga.

Texas basketball will face their first major test of Chris Beard’s tenure on Saturday as the Horns travel to Spokane to battle it out against No. 1 ranked Gonzaga.

A win would mark the first win over an AP-top ranked team in program history.

Texas and Gonzaga are both uber-talented teams, but each roster has been built very differently. Texas brings in a very experienced team that includes seven transfers and four returners. Gonzaga has one of the younger rosters in the country and will start two freshmen compared to Texas’ five seniors.

Watch here as the Horns arrived in Spokane on Friday afternoon.

The Longhorns will have to find a way to slow down 7-foot Gonzaga center Chet Holmgren. Holmgren was the No. 1 overall recruit in the 2021 class and is the odds on favorite to be the top pick in the upcoming NBA draft.

Texas head coach Chris Beard spoke very highly of Holmgren during his media availability.

Returning starter Drew Timme will play alongside Holmgren in the frontcourt. Timme averaged 19 points per game helping lead the Zags to the national championship game a year ago. Texas forwards Timmy Allen, Christian Bishop and Tre Mitchell will be tasked to stop Holmgren and Timme.

The X-factor in this game could very well be the Texas shooting. The Longhorns shot nearly 60 percent from beyond the arc against Houston Baptist. If the Horns see similar results, they will have a great chance at pulling off the upset.

Texas Basketball: Chris Beard has landed six of the top 31 transfers

This includes THREE OF THE TOP FIVE!

The Texas basketball program went from being down in the dumps with expectations of a rebuild, to now being projected by college basketball experts to contend for a championship in just the first year of the Chris Bead tenure.

After losing a total of seven players, four to the NBA draft and three to the transfer portal, Beard had to work fast to construct a roster that would allow Texas to compete in the Big 12 for the upcoming season. While there were expectations that he would attract some transfers, it is safe to say that no one expected the slew of elite transfers that Beard brought in would form a juggernaut.

According to ESPN’S rankings of college basketball transfers, the Longhorns brought in three of the top five and six of the top 31 transfers. It’s a class filled with elite players and depth that should have Texas contending for the title with the likes of Gonzaga and UCLA.

Let’s take a look to see where the six transfers ranked according to ESPN.
