Texas plummets out of the top 25 in Week 3 of USA TODAY Sports AFCA Coaches Poll

Texas falls out of the top 25 in the USA TODAY Coaches Poll.

In what seems like a fever dream, Texas was absolutely manhandled by Arkansas on Saturday evening, who served the previously ranked No. 15 Longhorns a devastating 19 point loss.

Heading into their Week 3 matchup against Rice, the Longhorns have fallen out of the top 25 in the latest USA TODAY Sports AFCA Coaches Poll.

This just leaves three Big 12 teams in the rankings, Oklahoma (No. 3), Iowa State (No. 14), and Oklahoma State (No. 22).

TCU was among the teams on the outside looking in, and are currently receiving more votes to be in the top 25 than Texas is.

The Longhorns’ brutal Week 2 loss has the fan base and coaching staff questioning the personnel that was used. It will take a week or two of wins to get Texas back in the rankings. Arkansas was unranked last week, but due to their dominate win over Texas, they are now the No. 24 team in the nation.

Steve Sarkisian and the Longhorns have a lot of work to do in order to bounce back from this one.

Texas-Arkansas halftime report: Horns struggle on offense

For the first time in the Steve Sarkisian era, Texas has some adversity in front of them.

For the first time in the Steve Sarkisian era, Texas has some adversity in front of them. On the road against Arkansas, the SEC school is pitching a shutout against their old Southwest Conference rival, 16-0.

The Longhorns’ offensive line has been a real issue early on. Neither Hudson Card nor Bijan Robinson has been able to get anything going. Arkansas’ defensive line has been getting pressure consistently. Even when only sending three guys.

Jordan Whittington has a couple of key drops as well. One was in the endzone which would have put Texas on the scoreboard. The other would have been a big play down the field just before halftime, giving the offense the momentum it is craving.

Arkansas quarterback K.J. Jefferson has done an excellent job within the offense as well. Analyst Greg McElroy even compared him to former Heisman Trophy winner Cam Newton during the broadcast. Texas’ defense has not been the issue to this point but needs to make a few key stops to make a comeback.

Key stats

Hudson Card: 4 of 8, 39 passing yards

Bijan Robinson: 10 carries for 38 rushing yards

Xavier Worthy: One reception, 25 receiving yards

K.J. Jefferson: 12 of 15, 37 passing yards. Seven carries for 59 rushing yards

Texas has a long way to go if they want to complete a second half comeback against Arkansas. You can catch the rest of the game on ESPN.

Four-star ATH Mikal Harrison-Pilot will be in attendance for Arkansas-Texas matchup

Four-star ATH Mikal Harrison-Pilot will be in attendance for Texas’ game at Arkansas.

The No. 15 Texas Longhorns are in Fayetteville to take on Arkansas in front of a sold-out crowd, and they will have a highly touted recruit making the trip to watch them.

Four-star athlete Mikal Harrison-Pilot announced via Twitter on Saturday that he will be in attendance for Texas’ matchup with Arkansas. The Temple, Texas native is the No. 11 athlete in the 2023 recruiting class and the No. 18 overall prospect in the state according to 247Sports.

Harrison-Pilot is getting a two-for-one in attending this Week 2 matchup, as he currently holds scholarship offers from both the Longhorns and Razorbacks.

He’s a three-sport athlete at Temple High School and plays both sides of the ball on the football field. Harrison-Pilot played safety on varsity as a freshman and earned second-team all-district honors, and has also found success at the wide receiver position where he earned first-team all-district selection as a sophomore.

In 2020, he recorded 38 receptions for 502 yards and seven touchdowns.

Pregame buzz as No. 15 Texas prepares to take on Arkansas in Week 2

Social media is buzzin ahead of Texas’ Week 2 matchup with Arkansas.

Texas is riding a wave of momentum after a 20 point win over No. 23 Louisiana in the season opener, but they have a tough task ahead of them in Week 2 as they travel to Fayetteville to face Arkansas in a sold-out stadium.

In Steve Sarkisian’s first game as head coach for Texas it seemed like the Longhorns were clicking on all cylinders. They were moving the ball down field with ease, the defense was able to contain the Ragin’ Cajuns, and special teams also performed well aside from the one missed field goal attempt.

Now, Texas must show that they can replicate that success in what will be their first road game of the season. How will the hostile environment impact the play of redshirt freshman quarterback Hudson Card?

The Longhorns are hoping that more receivers are able to get involved as Jordan Whittington, who recorded 7 catches for 113 yards and a touchdown in Week 1, was the lone standout of the group. Texas also needs the offensive line to step it up, as the Ragin’ Cajuns were getting constant pressure on the Texas quarterbacks.

Sarkisian stayed true to his plan to play both Card and Casey Thompson, and it will be interesting to see how soon or late Thompson meanders on to the field to take some snaps against Arkansas.

We’re now only hours away from kick off. Take a look at some of the pregame buzz taking place across social media before the game.

Three offensive keys for Texas against Arkansas

After a solid offensive performance against Louisiana, UT now has an SEC opponent on deck. Here are three offensive keys for Texas on Saturday.

When Steve Sarkisian was hired, his offensive success at Alabama was one of the main reasons. He set all kinds of records over two seasons with some of the best players in the country.

Everybody was excited to see how it would translate in Austin with not as talented of a roster. It was only Week 1 but the level of optimism went up a few ticks by the end of the night.

Texas’ offense was solid against Louisiana, especially in the second half, putting up a total of 38 points. Bijan Robinson was the star of the show (get used to it) while quarterback Hudson Card impressed on his debut.

Next up, an SEC opponent on the road.

Arkansas is going to present a challenge to Sarkisian’s offense right out the gate. An injury to starting defensive end Dorian Gerald and a first-half suspension to linebacker Bumper Pool will play in favor of the Longhorns but should be offset by the crowd expected on hand.

Here are three offensive keys for Texas against Arkansas on Saturday.

First up, Bijan Robinson

Steve Sarkisian provides injury report heading into Arkansas matchup

Head coach Steve Sarkisian provided an injury report before traveling to Arkansas.

Texas came out of the season opener against Louisiana without any major injuries. Junior Angilau was the only one to leave the game with a problem.

Head coach Steve Sarkisian confirmed the guard would be good to go Saturday against Arkansas. Angilau is expected to keep his place as the starting right guard and was at the position on the depth chart released Monday afternoon.

Flipping to the not-so-positive news, two players are in danger of missing the trip to Fayetteville.

Sarkisian said tight end Jared Wiley would be a game-time decision. He has been dealing with a shoulder injury throughout fall camp and only got a few snaps against Louisiana.

True freshman Gunnar Helm stepped up in his place as the H-back tight end. Neither player recorded a reception.

Wide receiver Tory Omeire was the only non-season-ending injury to miss out last week. It sounds like he will continue to miss time with a knee injury.

After tearing his ACL in fall camp last year, Omeire seemed to retweak the injury during the open practice in late August.

“Troy [Omeire] is rehabbing, he’s running, he looks good,” said Sarkisian. “Hopefully, we get him back sooner rather than later but we definitely want to make sure he is in the right space physically to do so.”

What Arkansas head coach Sam Pittman said about Texas

Arkansas head coach Sam Pittman’s thoughts on Texas’ personnel.

The Longhorns are headed to a once familiar place in Fayetteville, Arkansas to take on the Razorbacks in what used to be one of the most heated rivalries in college football.

Texas is fresh off a 20-point win against a then ranked Louisiana squad, and is now focusing their attention onto an Arkansas team, who many people are predicting will give them a tough time will be a one score game.

Texas’ major area of concern stemming from the first game is likely the offensive line play, as quarterbacks Hudson Card and Casey Thompson constantly had a man in their face when they dropped back to pass.

Not to say every other aspect of the game was perfect for the Longhorns, but other than the offensive line, no group preformed badly.

Arkansas head coach Sam Pittman addressed the media earlier in the week prior to the Texas game, and was asked about some players that stood out to him. Granted, Bijan Robinson is a standout, but he is not the same No. 5 that returns punts and kicks as coach Pittman thought. Here is what he said about Robinson when he wasn’t confusing him with D’Shawn Jamison:

“I think his running back is really, really special. He has more than just Robinson, but Robinson is just special.” He continued saying. “Robinson is hard to tackle. He has elusiveness as far as in space, but he also runs over you. He’s got a lot of speed. I just really like him. …”

Robinson was not the only player that Pittman praised, as redshirt freshman quarterback, Hudson Card, was another player he pinpointed as a standout for Texas. Here are his thought’s on the young quarterback:

“I like Card. I like him a lot because he’s got enough mobility to hurt you. Early in the Louisiana game he hurt them with his feet. He certainly can throw the football. He looks like a really, really fine player with touch on the ball. He runs the offense well.

Pittman mentioned the Longhorns defense gave the Ragin’ Cajuns offense a ton of issues Week 1, and tackled worlds better than they did last season. Pittman spoke about what he noticed from the Pete Kwiatkowski led defense, and what he thinks they will do to slow down his offense.

“They’ll probably move all over the place after I say this. They are very very sound, not a tremendous amount of movement. Lot of 5-man pressure. I tell you what, I like Overshown, he’s a really good player. Can run. They’ve got a redshirt guy in there Brockmeyer that I like. And they’ve got a huge guy, Coburn at nose guard, big 350-pound guy. … Against Louisiana they were primarily a 2-high safety look and said we can stop with safeties rotating down. I look for them to put another guy in the box just because the running ability of KJ (Arkansas quarterback KJ Jefferson) and make him throw it.”

Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian was able to get somewhat familiar with Pittman led teams while he was at Alabama, and is hoping to replicate the success he had taking on the Razorbacks. The players Pittman mentioned are crucial to Texas, and if the Longhorns want to avoid being upset, they need each and everyone of them to live up to their expectations and perform.
