How do Oklahoma and the Big 12 stack up in ESPN’s returning production for 2023?

Taking a look at how the Big 12 stacks up in ESPN’s returning production for the 2023 season.

Winter workouts are underway, and spring ball is right around the corner. It’s that time of the football schedule when teams are figuring out how to deal with the turnover they endured with NFL draft declarations and transfer portal departures.

Turnover is the name of the game in college football. The teams that consistently win are the teams that have had the best recruiting classes, which has allowed them to withstand that turnover.

Each offseason, ESPN’s Bill Connelly takes a look at the roster overhauls to determine which teams have the greatest amount of returning production (ESPN+). Returning production has had an impact in his SP+ ratings.

On average, teams returning at least 80% of production improve by about 5.8 adjusted points per game in the following season’s SP+ ratings. That’s a pretty significant bump! For a team ranked 25th in SP+ last year, adding 5.8 points to its rating would have bumped it to 10th. And in the past two seasons that weren’t majorly impacted by a pandemic (2019 and 2022), the average improvement for teams at 80% or higher is 6.8 points. – Connelly, ESPN

Not all programs are alike, however. Alabama, which ranked 125 in returning production, will be able to withstand losses a bit easier because they’ve recruited better than other teams in the bottom 33. We’ll have to wait and see if teams like TCU and Cincinnati are able to overcome their lack of returning production. Interestingly, those two schools each appeared in the College Football Playoff in the last two seasons.

Here’s how Connelly weighs the offense:

Broken out by position/player, you’re looking at roughly 29% for the quarterback, 6% for the running back and each of four wide receivers and/or tight ends and 9% for each offensive lineman. With each year of data, offensive line snaps become a heavier piece of the equation, which I find interesting. – Connelly, ESPN

So based on his equation, the Sooners lost 27% along the offensive line with the departures of [autotag]Anton Harrison[/autotag], [autotag]Wanya Morris[/autotag], and [autotag]Chris Murray[/autotag]. Toss in another 18% for the losses of [autotag]Eric Gray[/autotag], [autotag]Marvin Mims[/autotag], and [autotag]Brayden Willis[/autotag], and the Sooners have lost roughly 45% of their offensive production from a year ago.

Now the Sooners did welcome transfer additions [autotag]Walter Rouse[/autotag] and [autotag]Caleb Shaffer[/autotag] to replace two of their three departing offensive line starters, but given that Shaffer is coming from the Group of Five, his snaps don’t count as much as [autotag]Chris Murray[/autotag]’s.

Conversely, here’s how he evaluates the defensive side of the ball.

Perhaps surprisingly, turnover in the back of the defense causes far more of a shift in a team’s SP+ rating from year to year than turnover up front. By position, defensive backs make up about 46% of the defensive formula, while linebackers are at 40% and the defensive line is at 14%. – Connelly, ESPN

The Sooners’ biggest departures were at the linebacker level with [autotag]David Ugwoegbu[/autotag] (transfer portal) and [autotag]DaShaun White[/autotag] (NFL) moving on. They also lost [autotag]Jalen Redmond[/autotag] and [autotag]Jeffery Johnson[/autotag], but according to Connelly’s metrics, those snaps don’t weigh as heavily.

Oklahoma added some pieces along the defensive front to help bolster its pass rush and mitigate the losses. However, they are hoping for their young linebacker corp to take a step forward in 2023 to replace their veteran backers.

Oklahoma Sooners at Texas Tech Red Raiders: Sooners Wire staff predictions

The Oklahoma Sooners look to finish Brent Venables’ first conference season on a high note as they travel to face the Red Raiders. Sooners Wire Staff predictions.

The Oklahoma Sooners (6-5 and 3-5) will go on the road to take on the Texas Tech Red Raiders (6-5, 4-4) in primetime.

Coming off of their best defensive performance of the season, this week looks like another challenge for [autotag]Brent Venables[/autotag] and Ted Roof’s defense. The Red Raiders can put up some points and have thrown for a lot of yards in 2022.

[autotag]Spencer Sanders[/autotag] threw for 381 yards a week ago, but the Oklahoma defense came through in clutch situations to force turnovers and make stops to force the Cowboys into kicking situations.

Going on the road against Joey McGuire’s Red Raiders hasn’t been easy for anyone in 2022. Texas Tech is 5-1 in the friendly confines of Jones AT&T Stadium this season. On the road, they’re just 1-4. The Sooners are 2-2 in true road games but lost their most recent outing in Morgantown to West Virginia.

Lubbock isn’t an easy place to play, and Oklahoma will have to overcome a raucous crowd Saturday night.

Updated USA TODAY Sports bowl projections after Oklahoma’s win over Oklahoma State

The Oklahoma Sooners are bowl bound and headed for a reunion of sorts after their win over Oklahoma State. From @john9williams

Eight Big 12 teams are bowl bound after Oklahoma and Texas Tech picked up their sixth wins of the season on Saturday.

Though it hasn’t been the best season for the Sooners, they’ve gone 3-2 since their 0-3 start to Big 12 play and have a chance at an eight-win season if they’re able to win in Lubbock this Saturday and in their bowl matchup.

Only Iowa State and West Virginia failed to qualify for the postseason. TCU looks bound for the College Football Playoff, and Kansas State has a New Year’s Six bowl in their sites after a strong season.

Though a lot can still happen over the final two weeks of Big 12 play, here are the latest Big 12 bowl projections from USA TODAY Sports.

TCU stays undefeated with win over Texas: Big 12 Power Rankings after week 11

How do this week’s Big 12 power rankings look after week 11 action?

The Big 12’s College Football Playoff hopes stayed alive with TCU’s impressive road win over the Texas Longhorns.

It wasn’t an impressive margin of victory, but its ability to slow Bijan Robinson was impressive. The offense is what helped the Horned Frogs get to 9-0, but it was the defense that gave them their 10th win.

They held Texas to 199 total yards and 28 net rushing yards in the game. If they can get consistent defensive efforts from that side of the ball, they’ll be hard to beat in Big 12 play and should cement themselves as a College Football Playoff team in a month.

They stayed at No. 1 in this week’s power rankings, but what about the rest of the Big 12?

Kansas and Kansas State on top: Best photos from the Big 12 in week 5

The best photos from the Big 12’s first full weekend of conference play in week 5.

Though things didn’t turn out well for the Oklahoma Sooners in week five, the Big 12 enjoyed several entertaining football games.

Oklahoma State and Baylor played a tightly-contested rematch of the 2021 Big 12 championship. Though the Cowboys were largely in control of this game, the Bears made it interesting in the second half.

Kansas State and Adrian Martinez kept the good times rolling with their win over Texas Tech, and Kansas stayed undefeated with their win over Iowa State. That Jayhawks win came much differently than their others this season. They won a 14-11 slugfest over a tough Cyclones defense.

With 2-0 records in Big 12 play, the two Kansas schools are on top of the conference standings through week five. Oklahoma State and TCU are right behind them at 1-0 and are undefeated this season.

Looking back at week five, here are some of the best photos from the Big 12 weekend.

Oklahoma State beats Baylor, Kansas remains undefeated: Big 12 Power Rankings after Week 5

Oklahoma State and Kansas continued their winning ways, and TCU gets a bump after their win over Oklahoma in this week’s power rankings.

The Big 12 conference has three undefeated teams remaining after week five. Oklahoma State knocked off 2021’s Big 12 champion Baylor. Kansas survived a last-second rally from Iowa State, and TCU dominated the Oklahoma Sooners to remain among the ranks of unbeaten teams.

Big 12 play in the early going has provided some fantastic games and storylines. The resurgent Kansas Jayhawks have earned the right to host College Gameday next Saturday when they host the TCU Horned Frogs.

Kansas State followed up their performance against Oklahoma with another strong outing, this time against Texas Tech, and the Longhorns rebounded from their loss in Lubbock with an 18-point win over West Virginia.

After week five’s action, let’s update the Big 12 power rankings, shall we?

Texas’ defensive line must capitalize on Texas Tech’s weaknesses

The Texas defensive line is a matchup nightmare for Texas Tech this week.

Texas Tech has for the most part played good football through three games. The Red Raiders are 2-1 with an upset win over the Houston Cougars. They have done so in spite of struggling offensive line play.

We can break down a number of matchups, but the Texas defensive line has an opportunity to render those matchups meaningless. The Longhorns defensive front has the chance to go out and singlehandedly win the game.

Last season we wondered if we overrated the highly regarded Texas defensive front. Players like Keondre Coburn, T’Vondre Sweat, Moro Ojomo and others received plenty of mention prior to last season, but never lived up to their billing. Now, it appears they were as good as we expected all along.

Coburn and company made their mark against the Alabama offensive line in Week 2. If they bring the same intensity this week, the Tech offensive line could be in for a long day.

Big 12 Predictions for Week 2: No. 1 Alabama travels to Austin to take on Texas

There are several fantastic matchups on the Big 12 slate for Week 2. Here are our predictions for how the games play out.

Though there weren’t many compelling contests, the Big 12 went 9-1 in the season’s opening week. After the Backyard Brawl, the conference largely played Group of Five or Football Championship Subdivision competition. Though the competition wasn’t great, we’ve seen the conference struggle at times against those Group of Five and FCS schools.

Last week, conference teams won by an average margin of 37.4 points in the nine victories.

The schedule should be a bit tighter this week as the conference has several marquee matchups and intriguing nonconference games on the schedule. The Big 12 conference schedule also gets underway with Kansas making the early season trip to Morgantown to take on the West Virginia Mountaineers.

Week 2 is nearly here, and the Big 12 schedule is a ton of fun.

Oklahoma No. 4 in final ESPN SP+ projections ahead of 2022 season

ESPN’s Bill Connelly updated his SP+; where do the Oklahoma Sooners and their opponents stand in the final projections of the preseason?

Week 0 is upon us! The start of the 2022 college football season is here. Though the Oklahoma Sooners will not kick off against the UTEP Miners for another 13 days (and counting), we get football this week.

Week 0 provides a fantastic opportunity to check out two of Oklahoma’s first three opponents. On Aug. 27, the Nebraska Cornhuskers take on Big Ten foe Northwestern, and UTEP will face North Texas.

With the season getting underway this week, Bill Connelly of ESPN updated his SP+ ratings (ESPN+) for a final look ahead of the 2022 season.

The Oklahoma Sooners come in at No. 4 behind Alabama, Georgia and Ohio State, the top three teams in the USA TODAY Coaches Poll and the AP Top 25. However, Georgia and Ohio State are flipped in the polls compared to the SP+ ratings.

Oklahoma moved up a spot from the last update in May.

The Sooners have the highest projected win total in the Big 12 at 9.8. The next closest is Oklahoma State with a projected win total of 8.3.

As always: SP+ is a tempo- and opponent-adjusted measure of college football efficiency. It is a predictive measure of the most sustainable and predictable aspects of football, not a résumé ranking, and, along those same lines, these projections aren’t intended to be a guess at what the AP Top 25 will look like at the end of the year. These are simply early offseason power rankings based on the information we have been able to gather to date. – Connelly, ESPN
