College football analyst leans toward Texas to win the Big 12 in 2023

Texas is the Big 12 favorite, but who is the biggest challenger?

Talking season is ramping up another level as spring football nears its end. The Texas Longhorns are just a week away from the Orange and White game.

Texas is a trending conference title pick for the conference though many will have reservations in choosing the team. As recently as 2020, the Longhorns were tabbed as contenders to unseat the Oklahoma Sooners. Behind veteran stars in quarterback Sam Ehlinger, left tackle Sam Cosmi and edge rusher Joseph Ossai the team looked like a clear contender. Texas started 2-2 and ultimately missed the Big 12 title game.

Unlike that team, there are two identifiable holes (linebacker and edge rusher) for Texas heading into 2023. We anticipate Anthony Hill and David Gbenda to answer the linebacker question. One analyst isn’t too concerned about the Longhorns’ roster either.

Ian Boyd of Inside Texas is leaning heavily toward the Longhorns to win the Big 12 this season. The question is, who will challenge the team from earning the title?

Texas returns 10 of 11 starters on offense. The team now boasts elite talents in wide receivers Xavier Worthy, AD Mitchell and Isaiah Neyor along with two dangerous chains movers in Ja’Tavion Sanders and Jordan Whittington. They can also claim perhaps their best offensive line in a decade and a half.

Here are a few of Boyd’s thoughts on the league.

Some might have written off Savion Red at running back too soon.

Texas has a loaded running back room. Savion Red could not care less. Continue reading “LOOK: Texas RB Savion Red looks the part this spring”

Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian shares what his team must improve

Texas needs to win in the passing game on both sides of the field.

Texas is in search of its first Big 12 championship since 2009. Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian shed light on what it would take to accomplish that goal.

Sarkisian said the following about what he will prioritize for the team this season.

We need to be more efficient throwing the football … Defensively, (we need to) find ways to affect the quarterback.

The offensive talking point is apparent to everyone who watched the football team last season. Although I have seen enough of Texas’ signal-caller to know he can be special for Texas, there’s still plenty of room for Quinn Ewers to grow.

Steve Sarkisian is as dependent on Ewers’ success as athletic director Chris Del Conte’s legacy is dependent on Sarkisian’s success. It’s evident Sark understands the gravity of this season and the importance of getting the passing game up to par.

The defensive issues may not be as evident to the average fan. Defensive coordinator Pete Kwiatkowski did a tremendous job last season. Albeit, a recurring issue for his defense revolved around not playing tight enough coverage to give pass rushers time to get to the quarterback.

This season, we learned that Keondre Coburn was not only a capable, but an effective and disruptive threat up the middle. Texas needs to allow time for T’Vondre Sweat, Barryn Sorrell, Byron Murphy and Justice Finkley to get after the quarterback. If it can, the team could win as much with defense as it does on the offensive side.

Texas Football: Predicting the two-deep ahead of spring practice

We look at what the Texas depth chart looks like ahead of spring ball.

Spring practice begins on Monday, March 6. The sessions soften the blow of a long offseason without football. Continue reading “Texas Football: Predicting the two-deep ahead of spring practice”

Texas WR Brenen Thompson to run track this spring

Brenen Thompson will run track and miss spring practice.

Texas wide receiver Brenen Thompson is a speedy talent. It appears he will be putting his speed to good use as he runs with the Texas Track & Field team this spring.

Thompson undoubtedly will add value to the track team. Albeit, it could come at a cost to his ability to push for a prominent role on the football team this season.

It appears Thompson will not be able to participate in spring football in the next couple weeks. The move doesn’t hurt the already loaded Texas wide receiver room so much as it hurts the speedster’s chances to climb the depth chart.

Certainly, it’s Thompson’s prerogative to choose how he spends the offseason. The Texas staff knew his passion for running before he joined the team. Nevertheless, players who are able to participate in the spring sessions might earn tiebreakers on the depth chart if a depth battle is close.

Texas begins spring practice on March 6.

WATCH: Texas football players increase the intensity ahead of spring ball

Putting in the work.

With spring football approaching, like the rest of the country, Texas is getting in their last offseason conditioning and workout session.

The Longhorns are looking to improve after their 5-7 season in 2021, which included a six-game losing streak. A streak so long, the program hadn’t experienced one of that length since 1957.

Steve Sarkisian is looking to turn around the program that has long been stuck in mediocrity, and while he didn’t find much success in year one, he has added a plethora of talent to the roster that should help.

The returning Longhorns along with the early enrollees have been putting in major work with strength coach Torre Becton, as he does what he does best, which is create a competitive environment at all times.

It is obvious that there has been an emphasis on not giving up and continuously competing, as it seemed at times this team was easily rattled last season.

With the last workout completed and the players going on spring break, the next time we see them it will be in the heat of spring football which will be host to position battles galore.

WATCH: Texas football offseason workouts are heating up

Bijan Robinson does not skip leg day.

The Texas football program has found itself in a familiar situation, which is coming off a let down season after having high expectations.

Going into the 2021 season, there was an extreme amount of hype surrounding Steve Sarkisian, as the former Alabama offensive coordinator was supposed to revolutionize the Texas offense and help the program compete on a national level.

That didn’t happen, not even in the slightest, as the Longhorns made history for all the wrong reasons. After starting the season off 4-1, they would go on to blow multiple double-digit leads, and lose the next six games. The team lacked depth pretty much everywhere on the roster, the offensive line couldn’t block a rock, the defensive line was constantly gashed by opposing running backs, and the quarterback play was subpar at best.

Now that Sarkisian has had the chance to bring in his own recruits, and bolster up the staff by adding Gary Patterson, there is a newfound hype surrounding the program again.

With offseason workouts picking up, there seems to be a great ordeal of intensity, which is just what the program needs. Players like Bijan Robinson and Xavier Worthy will be more important than ever this season, as they need to help take the team to the next level.

The offseason will give the team a chance to get stronger mentally and physically, and hopefully for the sake of Longhorns fans, start trending upwards for the season.

Texas’ offseason in terms of figuring out who will start, who will step up, and simply what the team is made of will be fascinating to watch as time goes on. This team and staff know how much pressure there is, but whether they can live up to it is to be determined.

Texas Longhorns Football: Three storylines to watch as we head into spring ball
