A Big National Signing Day Could Put Texas Back In Top 10

With a big National Signing Day coming up on February 5th, the Texas Longhorns could jump back into the Top 10 with the 2020 class.

Prior to the updated National Rankings from 247 Sports, the Texas Longhorns were rated as the number one recruiting class in the Big 12 and top 10 in the Nation. Currently the sit 11th nationally and second in the Big 12 conference behind rival Oklahoma.

The team just ahead of them in the rankings, Michigan, is just 0.11 points ahead of them based on the recruiting rankings provided by 247. Signing Alfred Collins, Princely Umanmielen and Ennis Rakestraw Jr would definitely get them into the top 10 and likely overtake the Sooners for best in the Big 12.

Collins would give the Longhorns their second five-star recruit to go along with Bijan Robinson and Princely would be the classes 12th four-star signing. Neither Michigan or Oklahoma have a single five-star recruit in their prospective classes.

Recruiting classes rankings don’t carry much weight into the season without coaches putting them into a position to win but it provides fans and teams bragging rights. Well at least until they take the field in the fall.

This year will likely be the lowest ranked class since Tom Herman stepped onto the Forty Acres but he hasn’t finished outside the top 10. Every class has been third in the nation until the 2020 class.

Texas Longhorns Offer 2021 Four-Star Safety

The Texas Longhorns have made their fourth offer to a four-star safety of the 2021 recruiting class. Kaine Williams of Marrero, Louisiana.

The third-rated safety in the state of Louisiana, Kaine Williams has picked up an offer from the University of Texas. Williams becomes the fourth safety to be offered a scholarship from Texas and the highest rated of the four. Williams could come in and challenge for playing time immediately.

Williams is a ball-hawk that the Longhorns defense could definitely use to help out their defense. He can be dangerous after the change of possession as he looks to score and a very solid tackler as well. Most analysts are projecting him to Louisiana State but it would be a huge get for Tom Herman if they could sway the safety to patrol the secondary in Austin.

Texas at Kansas: How To Watch, Listen and Stream

The Texas Longhorns travel to Lawrence, Kansas to take on The Jayhawks on Monday Night. Here is how you can watch, listen and stream.

The Texas Longhorns are back on the hardwood on Monday night as they had to Lawrence for a rematch with the third ranked Kansas Jayhawks. In their last game, Texas kept it close for most of the game before Kansas did just enough to pull off the win in Austin. Now it is the Longhorns turn to take one on the road. The Longhorns come into the game on a two-game winning streak after victories over TCU and Iowa State.

The Jayhawks look to remain in the number two spot as they look to take back over the number spot in the Big 12. Winners of six-straight games since their only conference loss to number one ranked Baylor.

The Texas Longhorns begin a brutal three-game stretch that will either make or break their season starting with Kansas. Here is how you can watch, listen, and stream Texas basketball as they take on the Kansas Jayhawks.

Ohio State men’s tennis upset No. 1 Texas Saturday

The Ohio State men’s tennis team upset the No. 1 ranked Texas Longhorns in dominating fashion Saturday.

While you’ve been pacing and wringing your hands over what the Ohio State basketball team is going to do next, or planning a Super Bowl party, there are some pretty extraordinary things going on with other Buckeye athletic teams.

The Ohio State men’s tennis team would qualify. All it did over the weekend was knock off the No. 1 ranked Texas Longhorns in dominating fashion. As it almost always does for the Buckeyes, it started by taking the doubles point. Kyle Seelig and Cannon Kingsley defeated Chih Chi Huang and Cleeve Harper of Texas 6-4, followed by Ohio State’s team of John McNally and Robert Cash knocking off Christrian Sigsgaard and Yuya Ito of Texas 6-4.

With the Buckeyes then up 1-0, it was time to move on to the singles matches. Kyle Seelig struck first and made quick work of the Longhorns’ Siem Woldeab 6-0, 6-2 to put Ohio State up 2-0.

Texas then got a point back to cut it to 2-1 when its top singles option, No. 2 ranked Yuya Ito, got it done against John McNally 6-3, 6-3. The Buckeyes though would take the next two matches to seal the upset 4-1. James Trotter beat Cleeve Harper 6-4, 6-3, and freshman Robert Cash clinched it with a 6-4, 6-3 victory over Chih Chi Huang.

That set off the celebration at the OSU Varsity Tennis Center and improved Ohio State’s indoor record to 6-0. The Buckeyes have only dropped one team point all year, and you can expect it’ll move up when the next rankings come out.

2022 Cornerback Narrows List To Eight

2022 North Shore cornerback Denver Harris has narrowed his school choice to eight, did the Texas Longhorns make the cut?

Back in August, The Texas Longhorns and the staff offered North Shore cornerback of the 2022 class Denver Harris a scholarship to continue his football career in Austin. The Longhorns in total have five offers on the table at the position of cornerback for 2022. Harris, who is one of them, has narrowed down his final eight schools.

If you pay attention to his twitter account, Harris has his Texas offer as his pinned tweet so that could either be in favor of the Longhorns or not mean anything at all. He will be a name to watch during the next season especially given that he will commit following his junior year.

Texas Longhorns Offer 2021 Four-Star Running Back

The Texas Longhorns and head coach Tom Herman have offered 2021 four-star running back Donovan Edwards of West Bloomfield, Michigan.

During the Longhorns recruiting event in Austin on Saturday, they met with four-star running back Donovan Edwards of West Bloomfield, Michigan. Edwards is currently the number two ranked running back in the nation and the third-highest rated recruit in the state of Michigan.

The Longhorns have extended an offer to the highly touted back. The three schools highest on his list at this point are Ohio State, Michigan and Michigan State according to his 247 profile. Edwards marks the sixth running back that Texas has extended an offer to. Phil Mafah is the only one who has committed elsewhere. The other five have yet to make a commitment.

It is hard to fathom that Edwards will go with Texas over his top three with Bijan Robinson (the nation’s top-rated 2020 back) on his way to the Forty Acres.

Kyle Shanahan becomes second Texas graduate to coach in Super Bowl

San Francisco 49’ers head coach Kyle Shanahan joins Tom Landry as the only Texas graduates to coach in a Super Bowl.

When you share any type of recognition with football legend and Hall of Fame coach Tom Landry, you know you’re doing something right.

There are now two former Longhorns who have lead their professional organizations to the Super Bowl as a head coach, San Francisco 49’ers head coach Kyle Shanahan and former Dallas Cowboys head coach Tom Landry.

A former receiver for the Longhorns, Shanahan has been the driving force for the 49’ers Super Bowl journey. Although he didn’t necessarily have a decorated collegiate career as a player, Shanahan’s potential as a coach is unmatched.

He has already steered an impressive turnaround for the 49’ers in three short years, officially being hired as head coach in 2017. San Francisco is now one step closer to hoisting the Lombardi Trophy.

Shanahan and Co. are set to face the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl LIV. An incredible achievement in itself, the former Longhorn and his father Mike also became the first father-son duo in NFL history to appear in the Super Bowl as head coaches.

It appears the accolades will continue for years to come.

Texas target, 2020 three-star cornerback lists Top Three schools

Texas is still in the hunt to land 2020 three-star cornerback Ennis Rakestraw.

As National Signing Day approaches on February 5, Texas is in great position to land a few of their top targets to finish out the 2020 recruiting class.

Currently ranked the No. 11 overall class in the nation, the Longhorns are hoping to still land several more prospects on Wednesday to bolster their defense.

Five-star defensive end Alfred Collins is undoubtedly the highest-rated target remaining for Texas, but four-star defensive end Princely Umanmielen and three-star cornerback Ennis Rakestraw would be significant additions.

While we’ve covered the remaining schools in the hunt to land Collins and Umanmielen, it appears Rakestraw has included Texas as one of his top remaining programs also.

The Duncanville, Texas native completed visits with Texas, Alabama, and Missouri in January. Rakestraw was named the 2019 Dallas Morning News Defensive Player of the Year, helped lead Duncanville High School to 15-1 records, state-runner up finishes as a junior and senior.

Alabama has been heavily recruiting the 6-0, 170-pound defensive back, but Texas’ late push to land Rakeshaw over the past month was enough to secure his final official visit before National Signing Day.

Texas Basketball Recruiting: Is Greg Brown III Staying In Austin?

The Texas Longhorns need a big time recruit to help their basketball program so will that be local product Greg Brown III?

The Texas Longhorns basketball team needs that one player who can step on the court and dominate the way former McDonalds’ All-American Kevin Durant once did way back in 2006-2007. Durant was poised for stardom and after one year he made the jump to the NBA. It was no different for Mohamed Bamba who was also highly touted.

Could Greg Brown III be on that same trajectory? Should Brown sign with Texas he would be their fifth highest recruit in school history according to 247. He is their lone top target of the 2020 recruiting class that doesn’t have single signee to this point.

According to Kirk Bohls of HookEm.com, the five-star power forward has bigger plans than playing college basketball. He is eyeing a one and one year. much like the previous top two recruits in program history. So the question remains will that be in Austin?

Many felt that Kentucky would be an option as the best bet to possibly play for a National Championship on his way out the door. However, the Wildcats have two of the top five power forwards in the nation who have already signed their letters of intent for UK.

The 247 website has Greg Brown III at 83 percent to sign with Texas. If he is looking for a one and done season where he can put his game on display, the Longhorns might be the best option. He would immediately come in and likely start for coach Smart.

The only question remains is if he will stay in Texas or choose another school for his one season. With every major program in the country gunning for him, the opportunities are endless.

Can Texas Make A Run At The NCAA Tournament?

What would it take for the Texas Longhorns to make a run at the NCAA Tournament? Is there hope or is this wishful thinking?

It has been yet another disappointing season for the Texas Longhorns basketball team under fifth-year head coach Shake Smart. Smart joined the Longhorns after taking the Virginia-Commonwealth to team to the brink of a National Championship game appearance in the 2010-2011 season. After five-straight NCAA tourney appearances, he left the Rams for Austin.

The first year in Austin saw promise as the Longhorns finished 20-13 and fourth in the Big 12. That team was selected to play in the March Madness tournament but saw a quick exit. In the three plus seasons since, Texas hasn’t finished higher than sixth in the Big 12. During the second year of his Texas tenure the Longhorns failed to win more than four Big 12 games and just 11 overall.

The last two seasons have ended with identical 8-10 conference records, in 2018 they were once again booted from the tournament in the opening round. Last year they were invited to the NIT tournament which they won. Now as Texas sits at 14-7 overall with a Big 12 record of 4-4. Could they possibly make a run to get into the tournament ?

Well odds aren’t in their favor, Texas is tied with Oklahoma, Texas Christian and Texas Tech in the middle of the standings behind Baylor, Kansas and West Virginia. The Longhorns are winless against the top three with an average margin of loss at 20.7 points. Numbers slightly inflated due to the 38-point drubbing at the hands of West Virginia.

The Longhorns are currently 1-1 agains the teams in the middle of the pack as they are yet to play Texas Tech for the first time this year. As they were swept by the Red Raiders in 2018. For Texas the next three games will be a telling sign if they can compete for get an opportunity to reach the NCAA Tournament after missing out last year.

With Kansas, Texas Tech and Baylor on the schedule over their next three games, it doesn’t appear as though the Longhorns can do enough in season to earn a spot. ESPN’s Bracketology doesn’t have the Longhorns in the tourney at this point, it might mean that the Longhorns will have to do the impossible and win the Big 12 Tournament to earn an automatic bid to go dancing in March.
