Big 12 announces new schedule for the 2020 season

On the same day the Big 10 and the Pac 12 canceled their fall seasons, the Big 12 has released their revised schedule. You can view it here.

On the same day the Big Ten and the Pac-12 canceled their 2020 fall seasons, the Big 12 has released their revised schedule. Drew Davison of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram first reported the conference could release the new schedule on Tuesday night.

Going into the release we already knew The Longhorns’ home and away opponents. Baylor, Iowa State, TCU, and West Virginia were going to be traveling to Austin, while Texas would play Kansas State, Texas Tech, Kansas, and Oklahoma State on the road.

For now, the annual Red River Shootout is going to be played at the historic Cotton Bowl in Dallas. That is the way it should be and both Texas athletic director Chris Del Conte and Oklahoma athletic director Joe Castiglione should do everything in their power to keep it in Dallas.

Here is Texas’ full new schedule:

  • Sept. 26 @ Texas Tech
  • Oct. 3 vs TCU
  • Oct. 10 vs Oklahoma (Dallas)
  • Oct. 17 BYE
  • Oct. 24 vs Baylor
  • Oct. 31 @ Oklahoma State
  • Nov. 7 vs West Virginia
  • Nov. 14 BYE
  • Nov. 21 @ Kansas
  • Nov. 28 vs Iowa State
  • Dec. 5 @ Kansas State
  • Dec. 12 OR Dec. 19 Big 12 Championship Game (Arlington)

A couple things of note in the new schedule.

First, there are two bye weeks for every team across the conference. Texas will play Baylor and travel to Kansas off of their two bye weeks. The Jayhawks are the only team that will have a bye before facing the Longhorns.

Second, there will be no back to back road games for Texas this season. Last season, the Longhorns faced Iowa State and Baylor in consecutive weeks on the road, losing both.

No official news has been announced about nonconference play just yet. 247Sports reported UTEP was still the Longhorns’ singular nonconference opponent.

Report: Big 12 Conference to move forward toward fall season

A report from Rivals states that the Big 12 will move forward with a fall football schedule. The new schedule to be released soon.

After the ongoing speculation involving the Big 12 Conference, Rival’s Oklahoma site is reporting that the conference will move toward a fall season. It was a roller coaster afternoon following the Big Ten and Pac-12’s announcements that they would indeed cancel the season. Many thought that the Big 12 might following the lead of the Big Ten and Pac-12, however it appears as though they are staying right in line with the SEC and ACC conferences.

One report from Drew Davison of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram was that the conference could release the new Big 12 schedule upon completion of tonight’s Board of Directors meeting.

The Texas Longhorns are currently in the midst of fall camp and it doesn’t appear now that anything will hinder that. The question now surrounds their opening kickoff opponents, UTEP. The Miners put a halt to fall camp after players tested positive for coronavirus.

Texas leading the way for five-star safety Kamari Wilson

247Sports recently caught up with Kamari Wilson, talking about a recent conversation with Jay Valai and his relationship with the Longhorns.

In the midst of the most confusing time in the history of college football, one thing has stayed consistent. Texas and their elite recruiting in the secondary.

Cornerbacks coach Jay Valai has done an outstanding job since arriving on campus, landing five blue-chip recruits in the 2021 class alone. Now, his biggest project may be in the 2022 class with Kamari Wilson.

Wilson is a five-star prospect and the No. 1 safety in the country. Nationally, he ranks No. 30 and No.6 in his native state of Florida. Name a major college football program and they are recruiting Wilson.

Alabama, Auburn, Florida, Florida State, Georgia, Miami, Michigan, Oklahoma, Oregon, Penn State, Texas A&M, and USC are just a few of the schools looking to sign Wilson.

247Sports’ Mike Roach recently caught up with Wilson, where he talked about a recent conversation with Valai and his relationship with the Longhorns.

“We just talk about family, staying safe during COVID and how they see me bringing a big-time play maker to their system,” he said. “We also talk about some of the former players that played at Texas.”

“They are definitely one of them,” he said. “They see me as the next big time safety to come out of Texas, and they want to use me all over the field due to my versatility.”

Valai will continue to go after the top safety in the country, trying to replace five-star players Caden Sterns and B.J. Foster.

Wilson is also heavily interested in Florida, LSU, Miami, and South Carolina. Texas is going to have a tough time fending off SEC schools for his commitment. However, Valai has proven he can work magic before in the recruiting world.

Former Texas target Tunmise Adeleye decommits from Ohio State

Texas could be back in play for DE Tunmise Adeleye after his decommitment from Ohio State. He is a four-star prospect in the 2021 class.

Texas could be back in play for defensive end Tunmise Adeleye after his decommitment from Ohio State. A four-star prospect in the 2021 class, Adeleye is originally from Katy, Texas. He transferred for his senior season, playing at IMG Academy in Florida.

In his tweet, Adeleye thanked the Buckeyes’ coaching staff for “taking [him] in as one of their own since the day [he] committed.”

“This experience has been nothing but a good one and I have nothing but love for Coach Johnson on my end,” said Adeleye.

While he never gave a reason for decommitting from Ohio State, it may be because of the options the Buckeyes has in the 2021 class. Defensive end Jack Sawyer, the No. 3 player in the country, is currently committed to Ohio State.

To add on, the No. 2 player in the country, J.T. Tuimoloau, is 92% to Ohio State on 247Sports crystal ball. There would simply be too many skilled players in a single recruiting class for Adeleye to compete against.

Now, Texas can try to rebuild a relationship with a recruit who has publicly dissed them in the past. Adeleye was asked on Instagram why he did not commit to Texas.

“Cause in the past 5 years they’ve only sent 15% of their 4 and 5 star recruits to the NFL draft.”

According to 247Sports in-state rivals Texas A&M is seen as a favorite for the four-star. Nick Saban and Alabama could also be on the hunt for another edge rusher.

Texas’ director of recruiting Bryan Carrington had something to say about Adeleye’s decommitment.

It will be a long shot for the Longhorns to go after the soon to be five-star. However, Texas is in need of another staple recruit to sure up their 2021 class. Adeleye could be just that.

Texas Football roundtable: Which Longhorn will climb the depth chart?

Longhorns Wire staff each select a player that they feel has the most potential to rise up Texas’ depth chart this offseason.

Amid all the uncertainty and misinformation surrounding the upcoming college football season, Texas has been holding their fall camp practices over the past several days.

At this point, the mindset of each football program has to be centered around preparing the players for any scenario. We’ve decided to take a step back from the negativity and focus on the positives that are coming out of fall camp thus far.

A few particular players have stood out to head coach Tom Herman early on whether it be for size, leadership, talent or the progression overall from the previous year.

While absorbing Herman’s recent comments, Longhorns Wire staff each chose a player that has a realistic shot of rising up the depth chart this offseason.
