How Texas can crash the College Football Playoff in 2023

Can Texas put the pieces together for a college football playoff run?

Texas football hopes to get back into national championship contention sooner rather than later. The Longhorns last played in the national title back in 2009 and have yet to qualify for the College Football Playoff in the nine years since its inception.

Steve Sarkisian hopes to end Texas’ playoff drought with a breakout season in 2023. ESPN highlighted what each of their way-too-early top 25 teams needs to do to make the CFP next year.

The Longhorns have the talent to contend for a Big 12 championship but will have a few key issues to solve. First, there’s the matter of replacing Doak Walker Award winner Bijan Robinson and running back Roschon Johnson. Then there’s the matter of the QB position, where Quinn Ewers showed some flashes in his first year as a starter but also had plenty of struggles. Will he be able to hold off all-everything recruit Arch Manning? With the addition of Adonai Mitchell from Georgia to pair with Xavier Worthy and Jordan Whittington, who could have a big year, the passing game has a chance to be stellar — with tight end Ja’Tavion Sanders as a budding superstar. The offensive line returns all five starters and will be a key. So if the defense can come together by Week 2 when the Horns travel to Alabama, there’s a chance for a huge statement that could set the tone for the rest of the season.

Texas is in a great spot on paper from a roster standpoint. A solid chunk of returning production comes back, along with some exciting newcomers in the mix.

Consistency is going to be the key for Texas to finally get over the hump. The Longhorns can not afford to play up or down to its competition as they have in years past. If Sarkisian can get the most out of his team each week, there is no reason Texas should not be in the playoff mix.

Texas’ move to the SEC renews a couple lost rivalries

Texas playing Texas A&M and Arkansas is good for college football.

The revival of football rivalries between Texas, Texas A&M and Arkansas is a topic of excitement with the Longhorns’ move to the SEC.

These rivalries have a long history, dating back to the early days of college football. They have produced some of the most memorable games and moments in college football history.

Texas and Texas A&M have a deep-rooted rivalry that dates back to the late 19th century. The two schools have faced each other on the gridiron more than 100 times and were always a Thanksgiving Day staple.

The rivalry between the two schools was put on hold (aside from ongoing Twitter wars between the two fan bases) for several years after Texas A&M left the Big 12 Conference in 2012.

Arkansas and Texas have an equally intense rivalry, having faced each other on the football field many times in the past few decades. The Razorbacks and Longhorns have produced some exciting games and memorable moments, including the “game of the century” back in 1969.

Texas Athletic Director Chris Del Conte spoke this week about the importance of getting these rivalries back.

“I think what makes college so great is the rivalries,” Del Conte said. “Those deep-rooted family rivalries that last a lifetime. You cherish your mom and dad took you, their parents took them, your grandparents. When you can see the rivalries of schools and what it means, those are so important.

Texas vs. Oklahoma: Who got the tougher 2023 Big 12 schedule?

Greg McElroy believes Oklahoma got the short end of the stick from the Big 12.

Texas and Oklahoma are preparing for their future move to the SEC but are spending at least one more season in the new-look Big 12. The Conference announced its 2023 schedule recently, including the four programs joining the league.

College football analyst Greg McElroy believes Oklahoma got the short end of the stick from the Big 12. He spoke on the difficulty of the Sooners’ schedule on the Always College Football show.

“I happen to think when you look at it, though, I mean, it’s definitely possible that they could have a bit of an improvement, but you look at the schedule man, I thought they got dealt the more difficult hand when comparing them to the Longhorns, partly because all four of their road opponents if you count the neutral site game against Texas, they all competed in bowl games last year.”

The Sooners look to get back into Big 12 title contention in 2023 but have a few challenging road games on their slate. Oklahoma faces away games against Cincinnati, Oklahoma State, BYU and Kansas next season.

On the flip side, Texas plays most of its away games in close proximity. The Longhorns only leave the state of Texas twice in 2023.

Texas is making 2024 five-star EDGE Colin Simmons a priority

Texas is all in on five-star Colin Simmons.

2024 edge rusher Colin Simmons is one of the most sought-after prospects in the entire country. Simmons is undeniably an exceptional talent, already picking up over 40 offers following his Junior season.

The five-star out of Duncanville is listed as the No. 5 player in the nation and the No. 1 in the state of Texas for the 2024 recruiting cycle.

Landing Simmons is a top priority for Steve Sarkisian and his Texas staff. The Longhorns are making a full-court press, having every coach on the team helping with Simmons’ recruitment.

Simmons mentioned to On3 Sports what that strong effort means to him.

“That shows that you really want me, honestly, if you have the whole coaching staff coming after me… it means a lot. That means you really want me and if you’ve got everybody pushing to come and get me, that shows me a lot.”

Texas struck big on the recruiting trail in 2023, signing four five-star prospects in the cycle. Simmons is a player who could headline another top-five class for the Longhorns.

LSU, Georgia and Alabama are other notable programs making a significant push for Simmons. Winning out for Simmons’ commitment is going to be no easy task.

WATCH: Roschon Johnson standing out at Senior Bowl practice

Texas running back Roschon Johnson is turning heads at the Reese’s Senior Bowl.

Texas running back Roschon Johnson is turning heads at the Reese’s Senior Bowl.

After spending the majority of his career backing up future first-round selection Bijan Robinson, Johnson is proving he is quite the pro prospect in his own right.

Johnson ran for 2,190 yards and 23 touchdowns in his four-year Texas career. He made the switch from quarterback to running back just weeks ahead of his freshman season and has gotten better ever since. Johnson averaged a career-high six yards per carry in the 2022 season.

Johnson has the potential to be a three-down back in the NFL. He is a physical runner and his pass-catching skills should translate to the next level.

The Senior Bowl is giving Johnson a chance to showcase his skills in front of NFL scouts without being in the shadow of Robinson. Senior Bowl director Jim Nagy believes Johnson is making a strong move up many draft boards this week.

Here is a look at some of Johnson’s highlights at Senior Bowl practice this week.

Texas to host four-star TCU commit Warren Roberson this weekend

Texas is hoping for a flip of the TCU commit.

Texas is set to host 2023 four-star defensive back Warren Roberson for a visit this weekend, according to a report from Inside Texas.

Roberson is a long-time TCU commit but chose not to sign with the Horned Frogs in the early signing period. He chose TCU over the likes of Oklahoma State, Florida, SMU and USC back in October. Steve Sarkisian and the Longhorns’ staff have not given up on the talented defenive back.

247Sports composite ranks Roberson as the No. 22 safety and a top 300 player in the country for the 2023 cycle.

Texas hopes to flip Roberson from its Big 12 Conference rival ahead of the February signing period. USC and Arizona State are two others schools trying to get into the mix late in the process.

The Longhorns currently hold the nation’s No. 3 ranked class for the class of 2023.
