Giants hosted WR Michael Jefferson on visit, worked out 3 others

The New York Giants met with rookie wide receiver Michael Jefferson on Monday and hosted three others for workouts.

The New York Giants were quite busy on Monday, hosting free agent wide receiver Michael Jefferson for a visit while working out three others.

The 6-foot-4, 205-pound Jefferson was projected to be a middle-round pick in the 2023 NFL draft but went unselected after suffering severe injuries in a car accident.

On April 11, Jefferson was involved in a fatal multi-car wreck in Mobile, Alabama, and spent a week in the hospital after “multiple surgeries.” He was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the accident.

Since recovering, Jefferson has also visited with the San Francisco 49ers and Seattle Seahawks but has not yet been able to work out.

The 23-year-old tested well at the NFL Combine, clocking in at 4.56 in the 40-yard dash.

In addition to meeting with Jefferson, the Giants also worked out offensive lineman Jordan Roos, and cornerbacks Thomas Graham and Chris Jackson.

Roos is a seven-year NFL veteran with 23 games of experience at guard. He was last with the Tennessee Titans but released on September 14.

Graham is a former sixth-round pick of the Chicago Bears (2021) and Jackson is a former seventh-round pick of the Titans (2020).

Panthers working out former Titans S Chris Jackson on Wednesday

The Panthers are reportedly working out former Titans S Chris Jackson on Wednesday.

After bringing in former Chicago Bears wide receiver Aron Cruickshank yesterday, the Carolina Panthers will have another visitor this afternoon.

According to Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 Houston, the team will be working out safety Chris Jackson on Wednesday.

The Minneapolis, Minn. native is already well traveled, having moved to attend high school at Florida A&M University Developmental Research School in Tallahassee, Fla. as a kid. He’d then play his college ball for Marshall University in Huntington, W. Va. between 2016 and 2019.

There, he amassed 189 combined tackles (6.5 for a loss) with 2.0 sacks, seven interceptions, 45 passes defensed and a pair of fumble recoveries. His efforts in the 2019 campaign—where he recorded a team-leading 11 pass break-ups as a senior—earned him a 2019 First-team All-Conference USA nod.

Following that standout season, Jackson would be selected by the Tennessee Titans in the seventh round of the 2020 NFL draft. The 5-foot-10, 193-pounder played the last three years in Tennessee—having totaled 59 tackles over 24 games.

Panthers to work out ex-Titans DB Chris Jackson

Former Titans DB Chris Jackson is reportedly set to work out for the Carolina Panthers.

Just days after he was waived by the Tennessee Titans, defensive back Chris Jackson is getting a look from the Carolina Panthers.

According to Aaron Wilson of Click2Houston.com, the Panthers are bringing in Jackson, who was waived by the Titans on Monday, for a workout on Wednesday.

A former seventh-round pick of Tennessee, Jackson was one of just two members remaining from the Titans’ 2020 draft class before being let go, along cornerback Kristian Fulton.

While he showed flashes here and there, Jackson’s time in Tennessee was mostly marred by injuries and ineffective play. He appeared in 24 games (six starts) over three seasons, tallying 59 tackles (two for loss) and five passes defensed in that span.

The Marshall was waived during final cutdowns in 2022 before the Titans brought him back on the practice squad. He was elevated to the active roster after a few weeks but played in just one game before suffering an injury that landed him on injured reserve.

Jackson was thought to have a good shot to make the roster in 2023, but he missed some practice time due to injury and was unable to suit up in the preseason opener against the Bears before Tennessee let him go again.

Titans waive DB Chris Jackson, make reported moves official

Another member of the Titans’ disappointing 2020 draft class has been released.

Following the recent addition of running back Jacques Patrick, the Tennessee Titans announced that they’ve parted ways with defensive back Chris Jackson to make room for the team’s new addition.

Jackson was a member of the largely disappointing 2020 draft class that legitimately has an argument to make for being the worst draft class in Titans history.

Five of the team’s six draft picks were let go before their second contract even expired, with Jackson being the latest victim.

The Marshall product had some nice moments on occasion, but he was far too inconsistent from a production and health standpoint to be a real valuable asset to the team.

Jackson finished his Titans tenure with 26 games played, tallying 59 tackles and five passes defended over that span.

On top of the Jackson and Patrick transactions, the Titans also made several other roster moves, including:

  • Signing defensive lineman Kyle Peko
  • Placing defensive tackle Shakel Brown on injured reserve
  • Activating defensive back Josh Thompson from the non-football injury list after he passed his physical

The Titans also worked out cornerback Ronald Darby on Monday, but a deal doesn’t appear to be imminent just yet.

1 veteran on the roster bubble at each position on defense for Titans

After going over the offense, Shaun Calderon moves to the defense and names one veteran player on the roster bubble at each position group.

If the Tennessee Titans are going to be legitimate contenders in 2023, the defense is probably going to have to lead the way.

The defense looks primed for another strong campaign as long as the group can stay on the field together, something that was unfortunately a major issue last season with the Titans being ravaged by injuries.

Outside of inside linebacker and maybe cornerback, there aren’t many real starting opportunities to be had on the defensive side of the ball. As a result, the majority of the position battles set to take place in training camp are for reserve roles.

With that in mind, I wanted to take a look at one veteran defender at each position group who figures to be on the roster bubble going into camp.

Some of these choices are by default due to the player being the only real veteran depth option of the group, while others could cause a real debate among fans.

In case you missed it, we did the same for the offense, which you can check out right here. Now, on to the defense.

Jaguars reportedly hiring Chad Hall as receiver coach

The Jaguars filled a coaching vacancy with a (barely) familiar face.

The Jacksonville Jaguars are hiring Chad Hall as their new wide receiver coach, according to a report from Tom Pelissero of NFL Network.

Hall, 36, previously spent six years on the Buffalo Bills coaching staff, including the last four seasons as the team’s receivers coach. Hall was extremely well-liked by players in Buffalo, and the receivers for the team even went so far as to buy him a new truck in 2020.

Prior to his coaching career, Hall had a short career as a receiver in the NFL. After beginning his career with a couple seasons with the Philadelphia Eagles, Hall briefly played for the San Francisco 49ers and Kansas City Chiefs. He finished his playing career with a 10-day training camp stint with the Jaguars in 2014.

After finishing dead last in passing touchdowns during the 2018 season, the Bills offense made a meteoric rise during Hall’s four seasons coaching up the receivers.

Most of the credit for that ascension is due to the maturation and development of Josh Allen, as well as the arrival of star receiver Stefon Diggs. However, Buffalo has also got stellar production out of 2020 fourth-round pick Gabriel Davis.

Hall’s contract with the Bills expired after the 2022 season. The Jaguars had a vacancy on their staff after receivers coach Chris Jackson left to become the passing game coordinator and receivers coach for the Texas Longhorns.

Social media reacts to Texas’ newest WR coach hire Chris Jackson

If Chris Jackson develops Worthy, Neyor and Mitchell, recruiting could take care of itself.

Texas has hired a new wide receiver coach. After going big game hunting, Steve Sarkisian poached an NFL receivers coach, Chris Jackson.

Last week, Jackson coached Christian Kirk and company in the divisional round of the NFL playoffs. Now, the former Jacksonville Jaguars position coach is a member of the Texas Longhorns’ staff.

As you can imagine, some have found ways to nitpick the hire. The majority of criticism revolves around Jackson’s lack of experience as a proven recruiter. It’s too early to grade the hire, but concerns about his ability to recruit are premature.

At his disposal, Jackson has four receivers with strong potential for NFL futures. Xavier Worthy is the most proven of the group. Worthy is all but guaranteed to be drafted in the first three rounds of the NFL Draft with a strong season this year.

Isaiah Neyor and AD Mitchell each project to become NFL players with which Texas can take pride. Jordan Whittington also has the ability to make an NFL roster.

Here’s a look at how Twitter took the news of Jackson’s hire.

Jaguars WR coach Chris Jackson denies reports linking him to Texas

Jaguars wide receivers coach Chris Jackson says he hasn’t had discussions with the Texas Longhorns about joining their staff.

Amid reports that Chris Jackson is the “frontrunner” to join the Texas Longhorns coaching staff, the Jacksonville Jaguars wide receiver coach says that’s not the case.

According to reports from Inside Texas and Orangebloods, Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian is zeroing in on Jackson to be the team’s new wide receivers coach. Jackson denied those reports in a couple tweets Monday morning, though.

Jackson, 47, played at Washington State before a lengthy professional career split between the NFL and Arena Football League. He entered the NFL coaching ranks in 2019 as a defensive assistant with the Chicago Bears and became the team’s assistant wide receivers coach in 2020.

Jacksonville hired Jackson in 2022 as wide receivers coach and helped Christian Kirk and Zay Jones to career-best seasons.

The Jaguars have been an extraordinarily quiet part of the coaching carousel this month. No coach on the team appears in danger of being fired after a remarkable turnaround for a franchise that picked first in back-to-back NFL drafts. And few coaches on staff have the experience to draw interest from other teams.

It appears likely that the Jaguars coaching staff in the 2023 season will look very similar to the one in 2022. According to Jackson, he’s looking forward to being a part of it.
