Texas Football Recruiting: Top 2022 quarterback target commits to Texas A&M

Steve Sarkisian will need to get the 2022 quarterback right. Another option is off the table as Conner Weigman committed to Texas A&M.

One of the first major decisions that Steve Sarkisian will have to make in the recruiting world will be at quarterback for 2022. Of course, Quinn Ewers is the ultimate goal, but the five-star Southlake Carroll product has shown no signs of backing off of his commitment to Ohio State.

Another option is now off the table as four-star quarterback Conner Weigman committed to Texas A&M on Thursday. Not only is he expected to play football during his time in college station but baseball as well. Weigman could even be a better prospect on the diamond.

On the 247Sports composite, Weigman ranks as the No. 5 dual-threat quarterback and the No. 93 overall player in the country. Within the state of Texas, he is the No. 16 prospect and the second-highest ranked quarterback.

The Aggies now have four commits in their 2022 cycle and rank as the No. 8 class in the country. Each commit is an in-state prospect and top 160 talent. The early momentum is in thanks to their Orange Bowl-winning season that finished with a 9-1 record.

Texas now has three quarterback offers who are still uncommitted. Cade Klubnik and Maalik Murphy are the main names the Longhorns are targeting, while Ty Simpson will be announcing his decision on Feb. 19.

Restaurants SEC bagmen would use according to football program

After Tennessee allegedly paid recruits with McDonald’s bags full of cash, we wanted to know which restaurant each SEC program would use.

Last week it was reported that Tennessee football recruits were offered monetary benefits sealed by way of McDonald’s bags. It was a scandal that took over social media by storm leaving many people to question, “why McDonald’s?”

I too questioned their thought process behind the use of a bag that smells like stale onions and grease, and is there any symbolism behind McDonald’s and their golden arches? Not really, there isn’t any semblance of connection there. Whoever the bagman was he probably just got caught up in the drive-thru line and forgot to get a proper envelope.

What if SEC bagmen used carry-out bags from restaurants who were established/are headquartered nearby? I did the research to find out which carry-out bag would match each school and boy, does the symbolism speak for itself here.

Texas A&M wins the Capital One Orange Bowl

Final Score: Texas A&M 41, North Carolina 27
CFN Prediction: Texas A&M 34, North Carolina 20
Line: Texas A&M -10, o/u: 65.5

5. Itā€™ll go down in history as a misleading Orange Bowl – and ACC bowl season

It was a much, much closer game than the 41-27 final score, but stats are stats.

Including the College Football Playoff games, the Orange Bowl continues to be a bit of a dog – at least in the final score.

This game makes it ten of the last 13 decided by double-digits, and going way back, itā€™s been 18 of the last 25.

Itā€™ll also go down as a misleading bowl season for the ACC.

Yeah, it was 0-6 – you are what your record is – but two of the losses came in the College Football Playoff, Wake Forest was an underdog to Wisconsin, NC State was a slight dog to Kentucky, Miami was an underdog to Oklahoma State – and lost QB Dā€™Eriq King to a knee injury just as the team got rolling – and there was this loss.

North Carolina played a whole lot better than 41-27.

The ACC was the dog in five of the six games, but after a wildly fun year getting two teams into the playoff, it was a rough finish.

NEXT: North Carolina gave it a phenomenal run

Jimbo Fisher argues ‘something’s wrong’ if Texas A&M doesn’t make the College Football Playoff

Jimbo Fisher lobbied one more time to get the Aggies into the College Football Playoff.

After Texas A&M beat Tennessee, 34-13, on Saturday, Aggies head coach Jimbo Fisher lobbied one more time to get his team in the College Football Playoff.

Going into this weekend, Texas A&M was ranked No. 5 by the College Football Playoff committee, sitting behind Alabama, Notre Dame, Clemson and Ohio State. Unlike many of Saturday’s games, the Aggies matchup against the Volunteers wasn’t for a conference championship. (Alabama and Florida will play for the SEC title.)

But with their eighth win of the season, Fisher argued that they should be among the top-4 teams when the committee announces the playoff bracket Sunday.

When asked after the Tennessee game why Texas A&M should be ranked among the top-4 teams and be invited to the playoff, Fisher said:

“You want me to tell you why? We played the best league in ball. We got beat by the No. 1 team in the country, who also had another superstar on the team when they played us named [Jaylen] Waddle. People ain’t even playing with him now. No team in SEC history has ever lost but one game and [not] been in it. The other leagues, I love ’em all. But if we can’t play in this league and be in the playoff, something’s wrong.”

[lawrence-related id=972278]

Fisher pointed to his team’s overall success against an all-SEC schedule this year as a reason why he thinks it should make the playoff. Including Texas A&M, four SEC teams are on the College Football Playoff’s rankings, and all four are in the top-10.

Texas A&M is now 8-1, and, as Fisher noted, its only loss this season was to top-ranked Alabama ā€” 52-24 back in early October. Since then, the Aggies have been on a win streak, including beating now-No. 7 Florida. Georgia is the other SEC team in the rankings and did not play the Aggies this season.

Here’s more from ESPN:

“Seven straight SEC wins,” Fisher said after the game. “Some schools ain’t even playing seven games.

“I don’t care what league you’re in. If you’re gonna pick the best four teams, we’re one of them.”

As we explained earlier this week, the Aggies have a path to the playoff, but they’d likely need upsets in games played by the top-4 teams. Ohio State survived a close call against Northwestern in the Big Ten championship game, which may have been Texas A&M’s best chance to replace a top-4 team. The Buckeyes are now 6-0, and Fisher’s comment about the number of games some teams have played seems like a clear jab at Ohio State.

At the time this was published, the Clemson-Notre Dame game was still in progress, and Alabama and Florida don’t kick off until Saturday night.

Fisher continued, via ESPN:

“We do deserve to be in it,” Fisher said. “You’re gonna hear me say it now. We deserve to be in it. Now the committee, that’s their thing, but I believe that firmly. I’ve watched the games, I’ve seen everybody. We can play with anybody.”

Added Fisher: “Eight wins in the SEC, I wanna see somebody else do it.”

The four College Football Playoff teams will be announced Sunday, and the two semifinal games are on New Year’s Day.

With more games canceled, college football Twitter proposes last-minute Ohio State vs. Texas A&M matchup

This could work… maybe.

Ohio State’s game Saturday against Michigan has been canceled. Texas A&M’s game Saturday against Ole Miss has been canceled. And college football Twitter has a proposal: Buckeyes vs. Aggies.

But let’s back up for a second.

The SEC announced Monday that the Texas A&M-Ole Miss game this weekend is postponed, and it could be canceled altogether if there isn’t a good makeup date. This game was originally schedule for November but was postponed because of COVID-19 issues within the Aggies program. Now, Saturday’s rescheduled game has been postponed because of a “combination of positive tests, contact tracing and subsequent quarantining of individuals” at Ole Miss, The Clarion Ledger reported.

By Tuesday afternoon, the Michigan Wolverines canceled their upcoming game against the Buckeyes because their program is dealing with an increase in positive COVID-19 cases. The issue for Ohio State here is that it’s only played five games and, currently, it needs to play six to be eligible for the Big Ten championship game December 19.

[lawrence-related id=969269]

So college football Twitter suggested a last-minute scheduling of Ohio State vs. Texas A&M ā€” a game that could very loosely serve as a College Football Playoff play-in game.

The Aggies are 7-1 and ranked No. 5 in both the AP Poll and Coaches Poll. Last week, they were also No. 5 in the College Football Playoff rankings, which was one spot behind Ohio State. The Buckeyes are 5-0 and No. 3 and No. 4 in the AP and Coaches polls, respectively.

Sure, this is incredibly last-minute and not at all typical of how games are scheduled. But playing football during a global pandemic isn’t typical either, and if Coastal Carolina and BYU could schedule and play a game in a matter of days, why can’t other teams?

Ohio State-Texas A&M would almost certainly be an entertaining matchup and one we wouldn’t normally get to see in the middle of a regular season.

Texas A&M QB Kellen Mond nailed an official and knocked his hat off with this pass

The Aggies senior QB probably wishes he could have a do-over on this one.

No. 5 Texas A&M faced Auburn on the road Saturday in a nail-biting battle between the second- and third-ranked teams in the SEC West (both trail No. 1 Alabama).

Aggies senior quarterback Kellen Mond got off to a strong start by helping lead the team to the end zone on its first possession of the game, connecting with sophomore tight end Jalen Wydermyer for a 10-yard touchdown and an early lead. Texas A&M had a 14-10 lead at halftime, but Auburn ā€” led by magician quarterback Bo Nix ā€” got it back early in the third.

And that brings us to a drive, and one specific play, that Mond probably wishes he could do over. On 2nd-and-8 from the Aggies’ 43-yard line with a little more than eight minutes left in the third, Mond had his eye on junior wide receiver Hezekiah Jones down the middle near the first-down marker.

But unfortunately for Mond, not only did he miss Jones, but he also nailed the official and knocked his hat off with this unfortunate pass attempt.

As ESPN’s broadcasters joked: “I thought A&M was supposed to have the 12th man. Auburn’s got the 12th man on this play, and it’s the umpire.”

Thankfully, it appears the official was not injured by the pass, and perhaps the ball grazed his head just enough to knock his hat to the ground. But college football Twitter was not particularly impressed with that play, which ultimately led to the Aggies punting from their own 43.

At the time of this post, Texas A&M had a slight 21-20 lead over Auburn early in the fourth quarter.

UPDATE: It looks like Mond wasn’t the only one to hit a referee Saturday. Kansas State quarterback Will Howard did too.

USA TODAY Sports projects Oklahoma, Texas A&M to meet in Cotton Bowl

Oklahoma and an old foe? That’s the path the Sooners’ season could be heading down.Ā USA TODAY Sports projects OU to play Texas A&M.

Oklahoma and an old foe?

That’s the path the Sooners’ season could be heading down.

Oklahoma has won three-straight games and now have the best chance to make and win the Big 12 Championship according to Sooners Wire’s metrics. The Sooners had some things fall their way, but pulling off the quadruple overtime win over Texas is looming large in the race.

Lincoln Riley and his 2020 team does need a collapse of some sorts from Kansas State still, but things like that are trending in a good direction for Oklahoma. For the longest time, many pundits put the Sooners in the Alamo Bowl against Pac-12’s No. 2 or 3 team.

Now, things are trending in a direction to where Oklahoma can get the New Year’s Six bowl with the Big 12 Championship. The bowl projections have changed, too.

The Sooners are now projected to make the Goodyear Cotton Bowl per USA TODAY Sports. Their opponent? Texas A&M.

The old Big 12 member is 4-1 and has a favorable path to winning its last five games. The Aggies only loss would be to Alabama.

Oklahoma and Texas A&M met soon after the Aggies made the move to the SEC. Behind a huge performance from Johnny Manziel, Texas A&M blew the Sooners out 41-13.

The Sooners have Kansas this week as Texas A&M goes on the road to play South Carolina.

Kellen Mond leads Texas A&M to upset win over Florida

Texas A&M quarterback Kellen Mond led the Aggies to a big upset victory over No. 4 Florida

The noon window gave us plenty of upsets in college football, and more than one of them came from the SEC.

Texas A&M quarterback Kellen Mond led the Aggies to a 41-38 win over No. 4 Florida, completing 25 of his 35 passes for 335 yards and three touchdowns, with no interceptions.

One of the more intriguing senior quarterback prospects in the country, Mond showed off the kind of skill set that will have NFL scouts doing plenty of homework on him for next year’s draft.

A versatile passer who can make plays with his arm and his legs, Mond will help his case for the pro ranks if he keeps making plays like this:
