Sooners 2022 4-star commit Nick Evers to miss All-American Bowl after testing positive for COVID

Oklahoma 2022 4-star quarterback commit Nick Evers set to miss All-American Bowl due to positive COVID test despite asymptomatic, vaccinated.

There’s been a lot of Oklahoma Sooners quarterback news over the last 24 hours. Caleb Williams entered the transfer portal. Former UCF quarterback Dillon Gabriel committed to the Sooners via the transfer portal and now a future Sooners quarterback is joining the fray.

Set to play in the All-American Bowl this week, Nick Evers revealed via his Twitter account that he will be forced to sit out due to a positive COVID test. Evers stated that he’s showing no signs or symptoms and is vaccinated. However, due to protocols, he won’t be able to participate in the remainder of All-American week in anticipation of the game this weekend.

It’s a disappointing result for a player who’s ready to make a name for himself at the college level.

In response to the news that Caleb Williams had entered the transfer portal, Evers spoke with Chris Hummer of 247Sports and shared his readiness to start for the Sooners on day one.

In the piece from Hummer at 247Sports, Evers said, “I have nothing wrong with being throw into the fire early. I’m going to work my butt off every single day. To get the opportunity to be able to see the field soon is a blessing. I just need to get ready for it.”

Nick Evers certainly has the attitude of a future starting quarterback for the Oklahoma Sooners. He appears to be a guy that doesn’t shy away from opportunities. When his time comes to lead the Oklahoma Sooners offense, he’s got the skills to be a game-changer in Norman.

Oklahoma Sooners get commitment from 2022 4-star quarterback Nick Evers

The Oklahoma Sooners get a big-time commitment from 2022 four-star quarterback out of Flower Mound, Texas Nick Evers.

After Lincoln Riley left, the 2022 and the 2023 recruiting classes took major hits. They lost five-star commitments in both classes and the future looked bleak after Malachi Nelson flipped to USC.

Since Brent Venables and Jeff Lebby have come on board, the tide has turned. They’ve been hot and heavy on the recruiting trail and picked up their first commitment in 2022 four-star quarterback Nick Evers early Monday morning.

Nick Evers is the eighth-ranked quarterback per 247Sports and 10th in their composite rankings. On3 has Evers ranked as the No. 6 quarterback and No. 67 overall in the 2022 class.

The Flower Mound product has had a hot and heavy recruitment of late. After de-commiting from Florida on Dec. 7, the Oklahoma Sooners contingent of Jeff Lebby and Joe Jon Finley paid a visit to Evers the next day. That visit led to Oklahoma extending an offer on Dec. 8. Over the weekend, Evers and his family made an official visit to Norman and now the Sooners picked up the first big win of Jeff Lebby’s tenure in securing the commitment of the four-star prospect.

In Evers, the Sooners get a guy who was a  6-6A All-District selection his junior season when he threw for 25 touchdowns and rushed for another four. In 2021, Evers threw for 19 and rushed for 14 touchdowns as a senior.

After falling into the 20s in 247Sports team rankings, the Sooners are back in the top 15 with Evers commitment. On3 has the Sooners all the way up to ninth in their team rankings.

Five-star OT Kelvin Banks, four-star QB Devin Brown named flip candidates for Texas

Texas is linked with two big names committed to other schools.

With the calendar about to flip from October to the month of November, we’re about to be in the home stretch of recruiting. The early signing day is scheduled to take place on Dec. 15.

As things stand, Texas has 22 commitments in its 2022 cycle but there is still a lot of work to be done. Not only for prospects without a school attached to their names such as five-star WR Evan Stewart or five-star CB Denver Harris, but with a few guys committed elsewhere.

247Sports laid out a list of 12 recruits who could be considered on flip watch heading into November. The Longhorns were linked with two names in five-star offensive tackle Kelvin Banks and four-star quarterback Devin Brown.

Banks is one Texas has been pursuing for a while, being one of the top-ranked kids within the state. Brown, on the other hand, is one of the most recently offered prospects as Steve Sarkisian continues to look to expand the quarterback room.

Check out why Texas could flip both Banks and Brown

Texas offers 2022 four-star QB, current USC commit Devin Brown

Texas has begun looking to add second options at quarterback for the 2022 class.

Texas is beginning to makes moves in the quarterback market. Even with four-star Maalik Murphy already in the 2022 class, Steve Sarkisian is still looking to add another signal-caller.

It seems as if four-star Devin Brown has been made the target. The current USC commit got an offer from Texas on Monday night. Ohio State has offered within the past week as well.

With the uncertainty surrounding the Trojans’ coaching search, Brown’s recruitment has begun to explode. An official visit to Ole Miss took place two weekends ago with fellow quarterback guru Lane Kiffin making his pitch.

Brown is ranked the No. 1 player in the state of Utah and a top 10 quarterback in the class. It should come as no shock that Sarkisian is searching for guys on the west coast considering his roots.

Offering Brown may lead people to believe there will be some kind of exit within the quarterback room at the end of the season. Whether it is Hudson Card entering the transfer portal or Murphy decommitting from the class.

I’ll just say this. Stacking up elite-level quarterbacks is important. Just look at what Ohio State has done, even before Quinn Ewers reclassified. Yes, two guys are more than likely to portal at some point but wouldn’t you rather they have their chance in your program than not?

Texas only has three legit quarterbacks right now in Card, Casey Thompson, and Charles Wright. If Brown does end up a Longhorn and Murphy sticks out his commitment, Sarkisian will have a couple of years to evaluate his options. And there’s nothing wrong with having options.

On Sunday, Texas four-star QB commit Maalik Murphy was out displaying his talents again at a RivalsCamp. You can watch the videos below:

Quarterback recruiting has been the hot topic of Texas’ offseason. Steve Sarkisian is going after elite-level signal-callers. However, there has been one quarterback solid since his commitment in February – Maalik Murphy.

Having five-star status when he originally announced he would be heading to Austin, Murphy was recently bumped down to a four-star on the 247Sports composite. Rankings have not slowed down Murphy’s progress though. He was Serra’s starting quarterback after sitting as a sophomore, improving as the season went on.

Even when he arrives on campus in January 2022, Murphy’s development will continue to be the main focus. Seeing the California native on the field for competitive minutes early in his college career is rather unlikely. Sarkisian will use his quarterback expertise to take Murphy’s raw skill and mold him into an eventual starter.

On Sunday, Murphy was out displaying his talents again at a RivalsCamp on the west coast. OrangeBlood’s Jason Suchomel posted Twitter clips of the Texas commit. You can watch the videos below:

Texas is the only school on Murphy’s official visit schedule on June 18. Before the NCAA lifted the recruiting dead period, he was able to see Austin on a self-guided tour. Now, he will be able to interact with the coaching staff face to face.

A plethora of uncommitted prospects will be in town during the same weekend. Murphy is one of the leaders of the class. He will be hoping to sell some of the nation’s top prospects on the vision he sees as well.

WATCH: Maalik Murphy highlights from 38-17 win over Bishop Amat

On Friday, Serra picked up a win against Bishop Amat. Maalik Murphy performed well, as Serra scored their highest point total of the season.

Since committing in February, Maalik Murphy has been the anchor in Texas’ 2022 recruiting class. Nobody has been talking to and attracting other prospects to Austin harder than the four-star quarterback.

After being the backup quarterback for two seasons, Murphy has finally been able to get on the field as the starter. On Friday, Serra went up against Bishop Amat, picking up a 38-17 win.

Texas’ future quarterback had another decent day, with Serra scoring the most points they have all season. Beto Duran of DuranSports posted a couple of highlights of Murphy’s performance. A 35-yard deep ball and a rushing touchdown feature.

You can watch the highlights below:

Development is the word that comes to mind when discussing Murphy. He has little experience, only starting in five games during high school. Most highly rated quarterbacks want to start immediately but that will not be the case with the California product. Steve Sarkisian will take the time to develop him, making sure he is ready before he shines at Darrell K Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium.

Murphy and Serra have one more game against Alemany next Friday.

Texas Football Recruiting: Top 2022 quarterback target commits to Texas A&M

Steve Sarkisian will need to get the 2022 quarterback right. Another option is off the table as Conner Weigman committed to Texas A&M.

One of the first major decisions that Steve Sarkisian will have to make in the recruiting world will be at quarterback for 2022. Of course, Quinn Ewers is the ultimate goal, but the five-star Southlake Carroll product has shown no signs of backing off of his commitment to Ohio State.

Another option is now off the table as four-star quarterback Conner Weigman committed to Texas A&M on Thursday. Not only is he expected to play football during his time in college station but baseball as well. Weigman could even be a better prospect on the diamond.

On the 247Sports composite, Weigman ranks as the No. 5 dual-threat quarterback and the No. 93 overall player in the country. Within the state of Texas, he is the No. 16 prospect and the second-highest ranked quarterback.

The Aggies now have four commits in their 2022 cycle and rank as the No. 8 class in the country. Each commit is an in-state prospect and top 160 talent. The early momentum is in thanks to their Orange Bowl-winning season that finished with a 9-1 record.

Texas now has three quarterback offers who are still uncommitted. Cade Klubnik and Maalik Murphy are the main names the Longhorns are targeting, while Ty Simpson will be announcing his decision on Feb. 19.

Texas Football Recruiting: Dual-threat quarterback receives offer from Longhorns

Four-star quarterback Conner Weigman picked up a Texas offer on Thursday. The Longhorns will be trying to replace five-star Quinn Ewers.

Entering the season, it seemed as if quarterback was not going to be an issue in Texas’ 2022 recruiting class. Five-star Quinn Ewers was committed and possibly taking the Longhorns’ program to a different level.

A couple of mistakes later, Tom Herman lost the generational talent to the Ohio State Buckeyes. A lifelong Horns fan, Ewers, will be the next example of elite prospects leaving the state of Texas.

Luckily, the state still has two elite quarterback prospects the Longhorns can duke it out for. Cade Klubnik is a four-star pro-style quarterback out of Westlake High School.

On Thursday, dual-threat quarterback Conner Weigman joined the mix. Weigman is a four-star prospect, and Texas will be heavily invested in trying to sign both.
