Signing WR Terrelle Pryor would make sense for retooling Patriots

Pryor would make sense for a retooling New England organization

The New England Patriots have retooled their roster this offseason and it appears they are looking for more help at the wide receiver position.

According to a report from TMZ, Terrelle Pryor’s representatives have been in contact with several NFL teams, including New England. Pryor hasn’t played in the NFL since the 2018 season, but he did manage to have some success. The wide receiver’s career is somewhat impressive, given the fact that he played quarterback at Ohio State.

Pryor’s best season as a wideout came in 2016, when he caught 77 receptions for 1,007 yards and four touchdowns. He has been bitten by the injury bug over the course of his career. The 2016 season is the only season to this point in his career where he played all 16 games.

New England should take a chance on Pryor. The addition of Cam Newton allows for the offense to take chances and feel comfortable in doing so. Taking chances with a younger quarterback like Stidham would not necessarily be advisable. If New England were to at least bring in Pryor, they could possibly recapture the magic of Pryor’s 2016 season. they can afford to take on project-type players in a season like this one.

Pryor would add a deep threat and an athletic weapon. Those are two things that New England could always use. With the way that Newton can throw the deep ball, Pryor could be a great fit schematically for this offense. With his athleticism and the way that he can get down the field, Pryor does have the ability to turn small plays into big ones. He is not going to be the fastest receiver in NFL history, but he does have the athletic ability that allows him to spread the field.

Yes, he hasn’t played since 2018. However, the Patriots could definitely use a healthy Pryor at wide receiver. In six games in the 2018 season, he averaged 15.8 yards per reception. In a year where things look different, the organization needs to leave no stone unturned as they prepare for the future.

Former Jets WR Terrelle Pryor eyeing NFL comeback

Ex-Jets wide receiver Terrelle Pryor is vying for an NFL return.

Former Jets wide receiver Terrelle Pryor is looking to work his way back onto an NFL team.

Pryor spoke to TMZ this week and said he’s 100 percent healthy again after dealing with a hamstring injury last season. He also was stabbed in the neck and chest last November after a confrontation with a woman.

The 31-year-old said he’s spoken with the New England Patriots already but hasn’t been able to get a tryout due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Four other teams have been in contact with Pryor.

Pryor spent six games with the Jets in 2018 before getting released in October due to a groin injury. As a Jet, Pryor recorded 14 catches for 235 yards and two touchdowns.

Pryor was originally drafted by the Oakland Raiders in 2011 out of Ohio State. He started 10 games as a quarterback in three years with Oakland before being traded to Seattle. Pryor wasn’t on an NFL roster in 2014 and then was finally signed in 2015 by the Browns. He was in Cleveland for two years and recorded a 1,000-yard season in 2016.

Pryor moved onto the Redskins in 2017 but only played in nine games due to an ankle injury. After leaving the Jets in 2018, Pryor signed on with the Bills for two games until his release. In 2019, Pryor spent training camp with the Jaguars before getting cut.

So every year when he is looking for a team he never hesitates to bring the Pittsburgh Steelers up as a potential landing spot.

Pryor didn’t play at all last season but told TMZ he’s talked to five teams about a contract for this season. And with that, he once again put it out there that he’d love to get his career back on track with his hometown Steelers.

Pryor was a hugely successful quarterback in college football but eventually transitioned to wide receiver. Pryor has 115 career receptions and is 31 years old with seven seasons in the NFL.

In terms of notoriety, Pryor holds one NFL record and he set it against the Steelers. Back in 2013, Pryor was the starting quarterback for the Las Vegas Raiders and he got the Raiders off to a hot start against Pittsburgh when he rushed for a 93-yard touchdown.

ESPN picks Ohio State football’s most hyped recruit ever

ESPN published a piece on Ohio State’s most hyped recruit of all-time. Who did it pick, and what was said?

You have to shop for the groceries before you can cook the meal at Ohio State. The type of groceries purchased will have a direct correlation with what kind of feast you enjoy at the table.

The groceries — or recruits — will go a long way towards one heck of a college football smorgasbord season if done and developed correctly. But some of those prospects are hyped up more than others. Sometimes they pan out, other times they don’t quite live up to the expectations heaped upon them.

We’ve seen plenty of gourmet seasons in Columbus, but what college football recruit that ultimately signed with Ohio State was the most hyped in the history of the program? ESPN’s Tom VanHaaren has his opinion on the matter and he’s published a piece (subscription required) that looks at the most-hyped recruit for every one of the worldwide leader’s preseason college football top 25.

Next … Who VanHaaren identified for Ohio State

Todd McShay: Sam Darnold more talented than other recent college QBs

ESPN NFL draft analyst Todd McShay said Sam Darnold was more talented than other elite college quarterbacks when he entered the NFL.

Jets quarterback Sam Darnold has not had much to work with in his two seasons in the NFL.

Throughout his rookie season, Darnold’s only consistent target was Robby Anderson. No. 2 receiver Quincy Enunwa missed five games due to injury. Jermaine Kearse regressed after a strong 2017 campaign. Free agent signing Terrell Pryor contributed next to nothing before being released. Chris Herndon performed relatively well, but still caught only 39 passes as he learned the ropes in his rookie year.

In 2019, the Jets made an effort to surround Darnold with some weapons by signing Le’Veon Bell and Jamison Crowder. Crowder developed chemistry with Darnold, but Bell failed to contribute much of anything due to pitiful offensive line play. Enunwa and Herndon appeared in one game each, forcing Darnold to work without one of his starting receivers and a budding tight end.

Darnold has caught plenty of heat for his turnover-prone play in his first two years with the Jets. Some have questioned his ability to read NFL defenses, while others have questioned his arm talent. Throughout all of this, the lack of talent the USC product has been surrounded with frequently flies under the radar.

On Monday, ESPN’s Todd McShay shined a light on the subject. Not only did McShay emphasize that Darnold needs help from his skill position players, but he went as far as saying he was better coming out of college than other recent signal callers that have either entered the NFL in recent years or are preparing to do so in the 2020 draft.

“Sam Darnold was more talented than Baker Mayfield, Kyler Murray and Joe Burrow coming out of college,” McShay said. “Darnold just needs people around him.”

Many will argue against McShay’s opinion, but his tenure as a veteran draft analyst gives his words some credence. The jury is still out on Burrow and Murray, but Mayfield had Odell Beckham Jr., Jarvis Landry and David Njoku to throw to last season, yet failed to lead the Browns to more wins than Darnold accumulated with the Jets while working with a motley crew of wideouts.

Regardless of McShay’s words, it looks like Darnold will be forced to make due with less yet again in 2020. Bell returns at running back, but it remains to be seen what he can bring to the table in his second year with the Jets. Anderson departed in free agency and his replacement, Breshad Perriman, still has to prove he can consistently produce for a whole season.

On the bright side, Darnold still has Crowder to work with in the slot and the Jets will feature a solid tight end duo in Ryan Griffin and Herndon. Enunwa could return, although it is unclear what kind of impact he can make after a second neck injury. It’s not the most electric group of skill position players in the league, but one that can get open and catch passes.

Could year three be the year Darnold breaks out and separates himself from the quarterbacks he has been compared to for years? Only time will tell. Until then, let the record show that any evaluation of Darnold’s play must take into account how little he has had to work with throughout his professional career.

Former Seahawk Terrelle Pryor hospitalized after stabbing

NFL free agent wide receiver Terrelle Pryor was hospitalized after getting stabbed in the chest on Saturday morning in Pittsburgh.

Free agent wide receiver Terrelle Pryor, who spent time with the Seattle Seahawks back in 2014, was hospitalized and sent into emergency surgery on Saturday morning following a stabbing at his Pittsburgh apartment, according to a report from ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

Follow-up reports indicated that Pryor’s surgery was successful and his condition was upgraded to stable, with family members confirming he is expected to make a full recovery.

The Pittsburgh Police department announced later in the afternoon that Pryor was arrested and charged with simple assault, and Shalaya Briston was arrested and charged with Aggravated Assault and Criminal Attempted Homicide.

He remains unsigned after hauling in 16 receptions for 252 yards and two touchdowns in 2018, split between the Bills and the Jets.

There is a bit of good news. According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, a source  confirmed successful surgery this morning.

And, according to Jeremy Fowler of ESPN, a close family friend informed him that the family does expect Pryor to survive and that his progress is being monitored.

We’ll continue to monitor this situation as news becomes available.
