Dolphins work out four LBs on Wednesday

Dolphins host four LBs for workouts.

The Miami Dolphins, after hosting three defensive linemen on Tuesday and eventually signing one to their practice squad, held more workouts the following day.

On Wednesday, Miami hosted four linebackers – Jermaine Carter Jr., Reuben Foster, Marcus Haynes and Terrell Lewis.

Carter, 28, was a fifth-round pick of the Carolina Panthers in 2018 following a collegiate career at Maryland. Carter spent three seasons in Carolina before joining the Cleveland Browns in 2022. In 72 games, he’s recorded 194 (eight for a loss), six quarterback hits, two passes defensed, two fumbles recovered and a half-sack.

Foster, 29, was selected by the San Francisco 49ers with the 31st overall pick in 2017. In 16 career games, he recorded 101 tackles (10 for a loss), seven quarterback hits and two passes defensed.

Haynes, 25, went undrafted this year after a collegiate career at Old Dominion that saw him play in 37 games and record 96 tackles (20 for a loss), 13 sacks, four forced fumbles, four passes defensed and a fumble recovery. He signed with the Denver Broncos and was placed on the practice squad during roster cuts.

Lewis, 25, was a third-round pick of the Los Angeles Rams in 2020 out of Alabama. He played most of his first three seasons with Los Angeles before joining the Chicago Bears at the end of 2022. In 30 career games, he’s recorded 40 tackles (eight for a loss), 10 quarterback hits, six sacks, three passes defensed, one interception and one forced fumble.

The Dolphins have lost two linebackers to injury in back-to-back weeks with Jaelan Phillips suffering a torn Achilles and Jerome Baker sustaining an MCL injury.

Miami may have already signed Jason Pierre-Paul to help on the edge, but they could consider adding one of these four to the practice squad for some extra depth.

Saints open a spot on their practice squad by releasing Terrell Lewis

The Saints opened a spot on their practice squad by releasing defensive end/linebacker Terrell Lewis. Who are they adding?

The New Orleans Saints opened a spot on their practice squad by releasing hybrid defensive end/linebacker Terrell Lewis, per Monday’s update to the daily NFL transactions wire.

Lewis was signed after Week 1 to help the team prepare for games with the Carolina Panthers, Green Bay Packers, and Tampa Bay Buccaneers, so they’re now going in a different direction. Niko Lalos and Jaylon Smith are still on the practice squad, as is Anfernee Orji.

Who could they be adding? The Saints hosted a group workout for four offensive linemen last Thursday and it’s likely one of them is going to be signed to reinforce the depth chart; you can read more on the tryouts here.

The offensive line did improve in Sunday’s loss to the Buccaneers, relative to what we’d seen before, but you can always use better depth. Right now the Saints have just two blockers on the practice squad in Tommy Kraemer and the recently re-signed Mark Evans II.

Former Alabama edge rusher Terrell Lewis signed to Saints practice squad

Former Alabama edge rusher Terrell Lewis was signed to the New Orleans Saints practice squad on Wednesday morning. Lewis last played for the Chicago Bears.

Former Alabama edge rusher Terrell Lewis was signed to the New Orleans Saints practice squad on Tuesday. The news was first reported by NFL insider Ian Rapoport. Lewis spent the 2022 season playing for the Chicago Bears.

Lewis spent three seasons at Alabama. During that time, he recorded 47 tackles, 13.5 tackles for loss, and seven sacks. Following the conclusion of his junior season, Lewis entered the 2020 NFL Draft.

Lewis was selected in the third round by the Los Angeles Rams. There, Lewis spent three seasons. As a Ram, Lewis tallied 40 tackles and six sacks.

The Rams decided to part ways with Lewis during his third season with the organization. Soon after being waived, Lewis was signed to the Bears practice squad.

Following the 2023 preseason, Lewis was waived by the Bears. Now, Lewis will be a member of the Saints practice squad. He will have the opportunity to work his way up to the active roster over time. Needless to say, it will be interesting to see if he can create a role for himself on the Saints roster.

Saints promote practice squad DE Kyle Phillips to their 53-man roster

The Saints made a move to account for Payton Turner’s injury, promoting practice squad DE Kyle Phillips to their 53-man roster. It doesn’t bode well for Isaiah Foskey:

The New Orleans Saints made a couple of moves to account for Payton Turner’s injury including the promotion of practice squad defensive end Kyle Phillips to their 53-man roster, per NewOrleans.Football’s Nick Underhill. They also reportedly signed veteran free agent Terrell Lewis to take Phillips’ spot on the practice squad.

It doesn’t bode well for Isaiah Foskey, the team’s rookie second-round pick out of Notre Dame. The young defensive end progressed each week in preseason but was still playing behind more-experienced teammates, and he was a healthy scratch in Week 1’s win over the Tennessee Titans (along with most of the team’s draft class). Foskey may still be a ways off from being thrown into a game even in a reserve role behind Cameron Jordan, Carl Granderson, and Tanoh Kpassagnon.

As for Phillips: the 6-foot-4, 277 pounder has appeared in 29 games in his pro career and memorably helped seal a win for the Saints in their first preseason game with a very clutch interception against the Kansas City Chiefs. But he continued to make plays in run defense while generating a couple of pressures throughout the exhibition series, so they must feel he’s a better option to roster than Niko Lalos, who remains on the practice squad with the recently-signed Lewis.

Report: Saints sign former Rams draft pick DE Terrell Lewis to their practice squad

NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reports the Saints are signing former Rams draft pick Terrell Lewis to their practice squad, adding depth at defensive end:

The New Orleans Saints are going to be without Payton Turner for a while, and the team is already making moves to account for his absence. NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reports the Saints are signing former Los Angeles Rams third-round draft pick Terrell Lewis to their practice squad, adding depth at defensive end.

Lewis, 25, is the exact kind of player the Saints have targeted at the position — weighing in at 6-foot-5 and 262 pounds coming out of Alabama, he posted some impressive numbers in pre-draft workouts a few years ago. He appeared in 31 games with the Rams (including the playoffs) collecting 6 sacks, 40 tackles (8 tackles for loss), an interception, and 3 passes defensed, plus a forced fumble.

The Rams waived Lewis late in the 2022 season and he was picked up by the Chicago Bears, but they waived him during final roster cuts this summer. With Turner out of action and veteran backup Kyle Phillips being promoted to the 53-man roster in his place, Lewis joins Niko Lalos on the Saints practice squad.

Texans work out LB Terrell Lewis as part of 5-man group

The Houston Texans worked out former Alabama linebacker Terrell Lewis as part of a five-player group.

The Houston Texans taking a look at available talent to add to their organization.

The Texans worked out a total of five players Tuesday according to a league source.

Houston worked out defensive end Michael Dogbe, a former Arizona Cardinals 2019 seventh-round pick. After leaving in 2022, Dogbe spent the offseason and training camp with the Jacksonville Jaguars, but did not make the final roster.

The Texans also worked out defensive tackle Bruce Hector, who has been with six NFL organizations since 2018 either on active or offseason rosters. Hector recently was with the New York Jets through training camp.

Houston brought in former Alabama linebacker Terrell Lewis. A former Los Angeles Rams 2020 third-round pick, Lewis also spent time with the Chicago Bears in 2022.

The Texans worked out former Arkansas-Pine Bluff tackle Mark Evans, who spent time with the New Orleans Saints as an undrafted free agent.

Another offensive lineman the Texans worked out was Jamarco Jones, a former Seattle Seahawks 2018 fifth-round pick. Jones also spent the 2022 season with the Tennessee Titans.

Houston also worked out former Minnesota Vikings 2021 sixth-round defensive tackle Jaylen Twyman, who also spent part 2022-23 with the Miami Dolphins’ practice squad and offseason roster.

Grading the Bears’ waiver claims and signings from Wednesday

The Bears added three new players to their roster. Here are our initial grades of the moves.

Like every other NFL front office member, Chicago Bears general manager Ryan Poles was a busy man over the last 48 hours. Poles and the Bears worked to finalize the initial active roster on Tuesday, but did more tinkering the next day with a couple of waiver claims and a free agent signing.

On Wednesday, the Bears claimed safety Quindell Johnson from the Los Angeles Rams and Khalid Kareem from the Indianapolis Colts. They also signed recently released punt returner Trent Taylor from the Cincinnati Bengals. In order to make room for the two waiver claims, the Bears waived safety A.J. Thomas and defensive end Terrell Lewis. No corresponding roster move has been made as of this writing for Taylor’s arrival.

The Bears were looking for depth at a couple of defensive positions and had a need for a new punt returner. Poles was able to accomplish that and fortify his team for their upcoming Week 1 matchup against the Green Bay Packers.

As for the players themselves, did the Bears hit the mark? Or were there other options on the market that would have been better pickups? Here are our initial grades for Wednesday’s acquisitions.

Chicago Bears waive former Alabama DE Terrell Lewis

Former Alabama standout Terrell Lewis waived by Chicago Bears ahead of 2023 NFL season.

Terrell Lewis was selected in the third round of the 2020 NFL draft by the Los Angeles Rams. In his three seasons with the franchise, he totaled 40 tackles, eight tackles for loss, six sacks and a forced fumble.

Over the offseason, Lewis signed with the Chicago Bears, but won’t get to play for the team in the regular season after being waived earlier today.

The Bears elected to claim a few players off waivers, which forced the front office to make corresponding moves. Lewis fell victim to these moves at the very last minute, as the deadline was noon today.

He is a strong pass-rusher who can play for a team that needs depth. I don’t anticipate him being a free agent by the start of the 2023 regular season.
