Former Alabama LB Reuben Foster has impressive UFL debut for Houston Roughnecks

Former Alabama linebacker Reuben Foster had a good showing in his UFL debut with the Houston Roughnecks. Foster recorded six tackles and one interception.

One former Alabama Crimson Tide linebacker starred in his UFL (United Football League) debut. On Sunday, Houston Roughnecks linebacker Reuben Foster recorded six tackles and one interception.

Foster has had an uphill battle since declaring for the NFL draft in 2017. He has had to overcome multiple injuries and off-the-field issues to get to where he is now. However, Foster has persevered and has put himself in a position to earn a spot on an NFL roster in the future.

Last year, Foster suited up for the Pittsburgh Maulers of the USFL. As a Mauler, Foster recorded 52 tackles and one interception.

It will be interesting to see how Foster performs in the newly-created, UFL  this season. He is one of several former five-star recruits participating in the league this season.

Roll Tide Wire will continue to follow former Alabama football players in the UFL.

Former Washington linebacker Reuben Foster shines in UFL debut

Reuben Foster shines in UFL debut.

Reuben Foster was once a can’t miss-prospect. A star linebacker at the University of Alabama, Foster was a first-round pick in the 2017 NFL draft by the San Francisco 49ers.

Unfortunately, things didn’t work out for Foster in San Francisco, as Foster battled some off-field issues and was released in November 2018.

Washington, badly needing linebacker help, claimed Foster on waivers. Then-Washington president/general manager Bruce Allen took heat for the move as Foster was released by the 49ers due to a domestic violence arrest.

However, Washington stated it had done homework on Allen, with several of his former teammates on the roster, including Jonathan Allen and Daron Payne, they felt comfortable with Foster’s character. Foster was eventually cleared of the charges and the NFL reinstated him to Washington’s roster.

Big things were expected of Foster, who had drawn praise from his coaches and teammates, but in May 2019, his NFL career changed forever. In an offseason practice, Foster tore his ACL and LCL. He spent the following two seasons on Washington’s roster but would never play in a game.

In January 2024, Foster was selected by the Houston Roughnecks in the UFL draft. The United Football League was a new spring league combined of former XFL and USFL teams.

On Sunday, Foster made his UFL debut, recording six tackles, an interception and a fumble recovery.

What a performance from Foster.

There was a scary moment late when Foster went down with an apparent injury. Afterward, it appeared that Foster was fine.

Next week, Foster returns to the DMV when the Roughnecks face the D.C. Defenders at Audi Field.

In a shocking announcement on Dec. 31 2023, the XFL and USFL football leagues agreed to merge together to create the United Football League (UFL). The XFL and USFL have been trying to get their leagues off the ground for a couple of years, but have not had a ton of success competing against college football and the NFL.

The NFL is so dominant in America that no other football league could rival it, however, there is a need for a developmental or minor league for guys who have left college but still want to pursue a professional career. Merging the two leagues is a great business move as they won’t be fighting for fan engagement against one another and makes it easier to follow. The new UFL spring league has a chance to be a great benefit to the NFL with 2024 being the first year.

The UFL is now undergoing the process of adding players to the league for it’s upcoming first season. One of the first major additions to the league is former Alabama All-American linebacker [autotag]Reuben Foster[/autotag]. Foster is one of the most violent defenders to ever come through Saban’s program, unfortunately, some off the field issues have delayed his NFL career. However, I believe that this chance with the Roughnecks is exactly what he needs.

Dolphins work out four LBs on Wednesday

Dolphins host four LBs for workouts.

The Miami Dolphins, after hosting three defensive linemen on Tuesday and eventually signing one to their practice squad, held more workouts the following day.

On Wednesday, Miami hosted four linebackers – Jermaine Carter Jr., Reuben Foster, Marcus Haynes and Terrell Lewis.

Carter, 28, was a fifth-round pick of the Carolina Panthers in 2018 following a collegiate career at Maryland. Carter spent three seasons in Carolina before joining the Cleveland Browns in 2022. In 72 games, he’s recorded 194 (eight for a loss), six quarterback hits, two passes defensed, two fumbles recovered and a half-sack.

Foster, 29, was selected by the San Francisco 49ers with the 31st overall pick in 2017. In 16 career games, he recorded 101 tackles (10 for a loss), seven quarterback hits and two passes defensed.

Haynes, 25, went undrafted this year after a collegiate career at Old Dominion that saw him play in 37 games and record 96 tackles (20 for a loss), 13 sacks, four forced fumbles, four passes defensed and a fumble recovery. He signed with the Denver Broncos and was placed on the practice squad during roster cuts.

Lewis, 25, was a third-round pick of the Los Angeles Rams in 2020 out of Alabama. He played most of his first three seasons with Los Angeles before joining the Chicago Bears at the end of 2022. In 30 career games, he’s recorded 40 tackles (eight for a loss), 10 quarterback hits, six sacks, three passes defensed, one interception and one forced fumble.

The Dolphins have lost two linebackers to injury in back-to-back weeks with Jaelan Phillips suffering a torn Achilles and Jerome Baker sustaining an MCL injury.

Miami may have already signed Jason Pierre-Paul to help on the edge, but they could consider adding one of these four to the practice squad for some extra depth.

Former Alabama LB Reuben Foster to work out for Miami Dolphins on Wednesday

Former Alabama linebacker Reuben Foster is set to have a workout with the Miami Dolphins on Wednesday. Foster has not played in the NFL since 2020.

One former Alabama linebacker received some good news on Monday. Reuben Foster is scheduled to work out for the Miami Dolphins on Wednesday.

Foster, the former first-round pick, has not played in the NFL since 2020. He last played for the Washington Commanders.

Foster was known as one of the most hard-hitting linebackers in college football when he was at Alabama. The Alabama native earned playing time by performing at an extremely high level on special teams.

In four seasons at Alabama, Foster recorded 223 tackles, 24 tackles for loss, and seven sacks. During his senior season, Foster was recognized as a unanimous All-American and was the winning recipient of the Butkus Award.

Foster has not been the same since his college days. He spent time with the San Francisco 49ers and Commanders. However, he was not able to establish his footing in the league due to injuries and off-the-field issues.

Now, he will have the opportunity to make the Dolphins roster or earn a practice squad opportunity. If not, he will likely continue his USFL career playing for the Pittsburgh Maulers.

Roll Tide Wire will continue to follow the latest news regarding Foster and other former Alabama players in the NFL.

Dolphins to work out former 49ers LB again

The Dolphins will host the LB on another workout.

The Miami Dolphins got some fairly good news on Monday, as linebacker Jerome Baker’s MRI revealed an MCL injury that will have him considered week-to-week.

Still, the Dolphins, who are pursuing the top seed in the AFC and a deep postseason run, are considering outside help to, perhaps, fill in, in the meantime.

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Dolphins will host former San Francisco 49ers linebacker Reuben Foster for a workout on Wednesday.

Foster, 29, was originally selected by the 49ers with the 31st overall pick in the 2017 NFL draft after a collegiate career at Alabama that included a national championship and a First-team All-SEC appearance.

In 16 games over his first two seasons, Foster recorded 101 tackles (10 for a loss), seven quarterback hits and two passes defensed. Legal issues led to his release by the 49ers in 2018. He spent time with Washington, but a torn ACL cost him his 2019 and 2020 seasons.

He was unsigned through 2021 and 2022, but he did work out with teams, including the Dolphins. And, this past year, he joined the Pittsburgh Maulers of the USFL in 2023. He recorded 53 tackles, one interception and a half-sack in his first season in the league.

Miami has some in-house options to fill the immediate hole left by Baker’s absence, including David Long Jr., Duke Riley and Channing Tindall. However, Foster might be as competitive as some of the team’s depth options at the position.

WATCH: Reuben Foster discusses playing against Birmingham Stallions in USFL championship

Reuben Foster, an Alabama native, will be playing against Birmingham’s USFL team in the league’s championship game. He talks about how he feels.

Reuben Foster is a native of Alabama and is a Crimson Tide legend after serving as the team’s standout linebacker from 2013-2016. Now, he’s playing for a USFL championship as a member of the Pittsburgh Maulers.

The Maulers are looking to take down the defending champions, the Birmingham Stallions, which has Foster feeling a mix of emotions.

Foster found himself in the USFL after a short NFL career with the San Francisco 49ers and the Washington Commanders franchise. He was drafted in 2017 and was out of the league in 2020 following a series of injuries and off-the-field issues.

In a video recently shared to Twitter by Johnny Congdon of ABC 33/40, Foster talks about his close ties to the state of Alabama and what it’s like having to face the team from Birmingham.

“It’s going to feel super weird because I’m a big Alabama guy,” says Foster, who goes on to talk about how he’ll still play hard against them. “It’s kind of weird to play them, but it’s also going to be competitive.”

Roll Tide Wire will continue to follow Foster as he continues to progress in his professional career.

Pittsburgh Maulers linebacker Reuben Foster was named the USFL’s Defensive Player of the Week following an impressive performance in Week 3. Foster recorded 11 tackles, two tackles for loss, and one interception in the Maulers win over the Philadelphia Stars.

Foster formerly played linebacker at Alabama from 2013 to 2016. As a senior, he was a member of the First-Team All-SEC and was named as a Unanimous All-American. Foster also won the Butkus Award which is given to the nation’s best linebacker.

He was most commonly known for his tenacious hits against opposing SEC teams. Foster was an impactful player for the Tide as he ended his career with 223 tackles, 24 tackles for loss, and seven sacks.

After several different stints in the NFL, Foster opted to try out the USFL. He is currently performing at a high level and looking to prove himself enough to eventually return to the NFL in the future. It will be interesting to see if a team gives Foster an opportunity following the season.

Former Washington linebacker Reuben Foster is attempting a comeback

Foster is still only 28 years old.

Former NFL linebacker Reuben Foster is attempting a comeback.

The former first-round pick of the San Francisco 49ers in 2017 has been out of the NFL since the conclusion of the 2020 season, in which his contract ended with the then-Washington Football Team.

On Friday, Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network reported that Foster had signed with the Pittsburgh Maulers of the USFL. The USFL is a spring league, and Foster hopes to show NFL teams he can still play and earn an opportunity to make an NFL roster in 2023.

Foster was in his second season with the 49ers in 2018 when he was arrested for domestic violence. San Francisco released Foster in Nov. 2018, and Washington claimed him. The move drew plenty of criticism at the time, but Foster was later cleared of those charges.

Unfortunately for Foster, he injured his knee during OTAs in May 2019 and would miss the 2019 season. After Ron Rivera was hired as head coach in 2020, Foster had another chance to make Washington’s roster. He was activated from the physically unable to perform list in July 2020 and joined the 90-man roster two weeks later. Sadly, Foster would again be placed on IR on Sept. 5, ending his time in Washington without ever appearing in a game.

Foster was a first-round pick in the same draft that Washington selected Jonathan Allen. Many analysts believed that Foster was the best defensive player in that draft. Therefore when Washington claimed Foster, it was viewed as a good football move, but injuries ruined his NFL future.

Now, still only 28 years old, Foster is giving his NFL dreams another shot.

Reuben Foster signs with USFL’s Pittsburgh Maulers

Reuben Foster joins USFL’s Pittsburgh Maulers

Former Alabama Crimson Tide LB, Reuben Foster, hasn’t played professional football since suffering a torn ACL and LCL in a workout with the Washington Commanders back in May of 2019.

After over three and a half years away, Foster returns to football. He will be signing with the Pittsburgh Maulers of the USFL. This will be the second season of the UFSL and the league is only going to get bigger each year.

Foster has had some issues staying on the field since college, but he is still a former unanimous All-American and Butkus Award winner. If things go well for Foster in the USFL it will be fun to see if he can ever get back to the NFL because he is still only 28 years old.
