Texans have 8 players not practicing at OTAs

The Houston Texans have eight players who were not practicing at organized team activities.

The Houston Texans may have over 90% attendance at their organized team activities at Houston Methodist Training Center and NRG Stadium, but the focus perpetually is on the players who weren’t available.

According to Aaron Wilson from KPRC-TV, the Texans had seven players who were not participating at the team’s OTAs on Tuesday.

Three players were unavailable due to injury: receiver John Metchie (groin), defensive lineman Thomas Booker (groin), and defensive tackle Hassan Ridgeway (hamstring).

Linebacker Denzel Perryman was not available due to recovery from labrum surgery.

The Texans had three veterans who were not in attendance at the voluntary workouts: left tackle Laremy Tunsil, cornerback Steven Nelson, tight end Dalton Schultz, and tackle Greg Little. Last offseason, Tunsil missed all of OTAs but was back in time for the team’s mandatory minicamp in June.

Texans rookie DL Thomas Booker says Stanford helped him learn to study himself

Houston Texans DL Thomas Booker says that going to school at Stanford helped him learn how to study, not only in academics, but in football.

Houston Texans defensive lineman Thomas Booker is another Stanford product on the roster.

The fifth-rounder says that going to the prestigious school in the Pac-12 Conference helped him discover how to study, not only in academics, but also in football.

“Throughout college, both football wise and academic wise, I had like an iPad that I would write on with notes, so, I kind of carried that on to the league,” Booker told reporters on Aug. 17. “I treat all my meetings like classroom sections because that’s kind of what it is.”

Where the studying is also concentrated is on Booker himself. The rookie says that he uses his study to also examine how he processes information.

“You’re studying yourself,” said Booker. “I try to keep those study habits the same way, so during our meetings I take notes on what everybody is saying. Then when I go back to the hotel room, I go take a look over the tape again for like 45 minutes to an hour and just go down and write everything that I could have done better.”

Booker generated four combined tackles and 1.0 sack in the 17-13 win over the New Orleans Saints in the preseason opener Aug. 13 at NRG Stadium. Part of how Booker was able to be effective was by measuring the steps he takes when rushing certain gaps.

Said Booker: “When I’m rushing the B-gap, a lot of times I feel like I don’t take enough steps up field, so, I’m not really selling that guard on the fact that I’m going to be rushing outside so I can come inside. So that’s one of the things I write down a lot that I’m still working on.

“But to be honest, I probably write down like 10 to 15 things every day. I try to underline like three or four of them because I know that I can’t focus on 10 to 15. I don’t have that much mental bandwidth, but I try to focus on three or four.”

Booker will have plenty of material to work with after the Texans face the Los Angeles Rams Friday night at SoFi Stadium in their second preseason tilt.

Texans DL Thomas Booker reveals what DT Maliek Collins has taught him

Houston Texans rookie DL Thomas Booker has been paying attention to the lessons that DT Maliek Collins has been imparting.

Houston Texans defensive lineman Thomas Booker has been paying attention.

The fifth-rounder from Stanford has been playing alongside seventh-year defensive tackle Maliek Collins. The former 2016 third-round pick has been trying to impart wisdom upon the young Booker.

“Maliek is a physical freak,” Booker told reporters Aug. 17. “The way that he moves, the smoothness of his pass rush, the way that he always chains his moves together is something that I really want to get to at some point and that I’m working for.”

Collins fits well with the Texans’ Tampa 2 scheme, which has 3-technique defensive tackles, such as Collins, quickly get into the backfield and rush the passer en route to stuffing the run.

“I think the big point for me that he’s given is just don’t think as much. Just go. This is a defense that prioritizes penetration and disruption, so the more you’re thinking, the less you’re going to be penetrating and doing that,” said Booker. “So that’s a big point that he’s given me. But all the vets, Ross (Blacklock), Derek Rivers, all those guys have given me really good pointers to help me progress my game quicker.”

Booker will have a chance to showcase more of his lessons learned against the Los Angeles Rams on Aug. 19 at SoFi Stadium.
