Dolphins work out four LBs on Wednesday

Dolphins host four LBs for workouts.

The Miami Dolphins, after hosting three defensive linemen on Tuesday and eventually signing one to their practice squad, held more workouts the following day.

On Wednesday, Miami hosted four linebackers – Jermaine Carter Jr., Reuben Foster, Marcus Haynes and Terrell Lewis.

Carter, 28, was a fifth-round pick of the Carolina Panthers in 2018 following a collegiate career at Maryland. Carter spent three seasons in Carolina before joining the Cleveland Browns in 2022. In 72 games, he’s recorded 194 (eight for a loss), six quarterback hits, two passes defensed, two fumbles recovered and a half-sack.

Foster, 29, was selected by the San Francisco 49ers with the 31st overall pick in 2017. In 16 career games, he recorded 101 tackles (10 for a loss), seven quarterback hits and two passes defensed.

Haynes, 25, went undrafted this year after a collegiate career at Old Dominion that saw him play in 37 games and record 96 tackles (20 for a loss), 13 sacks, four forced fumbles, four passes defensed and a fumble recovery. He signed with the Denver Broncos and was placed on the practice squad during roster cuts.

Lewis, 25, was a third-round pick of the Los Angeles Rams in 2020 out of Alabama. He played most of his first three seasons with Los Angeles before joining the Chicago Bears at the end of 2022. In 30 career games, he’s recorded 40 tackles (eight for a loss), 10 quarterback hits, six sacks, three passes defensed, one interception and one forced fumble.

The Dolphins have lost two linebackers to injury in back-to-back weeks with Jaelan Phillips suffering a torn Achilles and Jerome Baker sustaining an MCL injury.

Miami may have already signed Jason Pierre-Paul to help on the edge, but they could consider adding one of these four to the practice squad for some extra depth.

Broncos offseason roster: No. 52, OLB Marcus Haynes

The Broncos seem to find an undrafted gem every year. Could outside linebacker Marcus Haynes be this year’s UDFA to watch?

Broncos Wire’s 90-man offseason roster series continues today with a look at rookie outside linebacker Marcus Haynes, No. 52.

Before the Broncos: Haynes, (6-4, 251 pounds) made a name for himself at Old Dominion University, where he was a four-year player. In 2018, Haynes played in all 12 games during the season, recording seven tackles and two sacks. In 2019, Haynes upped his total tackles to 21, including 6.5 tackles for loss, along with 3.5 sacks and two forced fumbles.

After the 2020 COVID-19-affected year where Old Dominion did not have any games, Haynes bounced back in 2021, with six starts at defensive end, playing in 13 games. He recorded a career-high 5.5 sacks, 28 total tackles (14 solo, 14 assisted), two passes defended and a forced fumble that fall.

Haynes then had a career year in 2022, recording highs in tackles (47 total, 21 solo, 26 assisted), tackles for losses (7.5) and passes defended (3), all while totaling 4.0 sacks and forcing one fumble.

Broncos tenure: The Denver Broncos signed Haynes as an undrafted free agent following the 2023 NFL draft.

Chance to make the 53-man roster: Haynes has a slim chance of making the 53-man roster, according to Broncos Wire’s 2023 projected depth chart. Haynes will get an opportunity to impress during training camp and preseason, and he might be a candidate for the practice squad.

Broncos announce undrafted free agent signings: Meet the 15 players

Learn more about the 15 undrafted free agents the Broncos signed following the 2023 NFL draft.

After selecting five players in the 2023 NFL draft (and adding a sixth player through a draft-day trade), the Denver Broncos have filled their 90-man offseason roster by signing undrafted free agents.

The Broncos signed 15 UDFAs after the draft, including two running backs and two defensive linemen. Those are two notable positions given that Denver did not select a running back or a defensive lineman during the draft.

The Broncos also brought in tight ends, wide receivers, offensive linemen, linebackers and defensive backs. Undrafted players often face long odds to make the 53-man roster, but Denver has a strong history of uncovering UDFA gems.

Here’s a look at the 15 UDFA signings the Broncos made in 2023.

Broncos’ updated OLB depth chart after the NFL draft

The Broncos have two clear starters in Baron Browning and Randy Gregory at OLB with several intriguing young players behind them.

OLB1 OLB2 Depth ST
Baron Browning Randy Gregory Jake Martin Aaron Patrick
Jonathon Cooper Nik Bonitto Christopher Allen Thomas Incoom
Marcus Haynes

After not selecting a pass rusher in the 2023 NFL draft, the Denver Broncos’ outside linebacker depth chart only features a few additions since April.

Leading the way as the team’s starting edge defenders are Baron Browning and Randy Gregory, who will aim to stay healthy this season and live up to their potential. Behind them are Jonathon Cooper, a nine-game starter as an injury fill-in last year, and Nik Bonitto, who will look to take a step forward in 2023 after an underwhelming rookie season.

After those top four OLBs, things get a little interesting. Jake Martin has totaled 16 sacks in 74 games (16 starts) with four teams over the last five years. Unless he’s cut to save salary cap space ($3.8 million), Martin figures to be part of the pass-rush rotation in 2023.

Update: Martin was released on Wednesday.

Christopher Allen missed all of his rookie season in 2022 on injured reserve with a foot injury, but he was one of the team’s top undrafted free agent signings last year and could be a sleeper to watch for this summer.

Aaron Patrick was a key special teams player for Denver before he tore his ACL last year. If he fully recovers from that knee injury, he should have a decent chance to make the team once again as an ST contributor.

Thomas Incoom and Marcus Haynes are among the team’s UDFA signings this year. They will likely be competing for spots on the practice squad.

The Broncos carried six OLBs on their initial 53-man roster in 2022.
