Jets elevate Nick Bawden, Bruce Hector; Greg Zuerlein good to go

The Jets elevated Nick Bawden and Bruce Hector from the practice squad for Week 17 and kicker Greg Zuerlein is good to go.

The Jets announced they elevated fullback Nick Bawden and defensive lineman Bruce Hector from the practice squad for Thursday’s game against the Cleveland Browns.

One player the Jets did not elevate was kicker Austin Seibert. That would indicate Greg Zuerlein, who was questionable with a quad injury, should be good to go.

Bawden is being elevated for the second straight week following his roster gymnastics thanks to the Jets’ decision to activate quarterback Aaron Rodgers.

Hector is being elevated for the first time this season. After spending Week 9 on the practice squad, Hector rejoined the practice squad for Week 14. Hector has bounced around the league during his first six seasons. He has played in 14 games with one start during stints with the Philadelphia Eagles and Detroit Lions.

Busy day for ex-Lions on the NFL’s transaction wire

Several ex-Lions appeared on Tuesday’s NFL transaction wire, from releases to tryouts

The NFL publishes a daily transaction report, one that runs the gamut between roster cuts, players being placed on reserve lists to those trying out for teams and everything in between. Tuesday’s transaction list was crowded with updates on former Detroit Lions players.

Foremost on the list is Trey Flowers. The New England Patriots released the defensive end from the team’s PUP list. Flowers has not played this season and managed just 65 snaps for the Miami Dolphins in 2022 after the Lions released him following the 2021 season.

One-time Lions OL Tommy Kraemer is back on the New Orleans Saints practice squad. Kraemer was signed from New Orleans’ practice squad to their active roster last week, then waived on Monday. He’s played seven offensive snaps in two games with the Saints.

Another former Lions offensive lineman, Obinna Eze, had his practice squad contract terminated by the Pittsburgh Steelers. Eze signed with Pittsburgh’s practice squad after Week 3 but was unable to stick.

There were a few ex-Lions hitting the tryout/workout circuit this week, too:

QB Jeff Driskel tried out for the Colts (Monday)

DT Bruce Hector also tried out for the Colts

K Austin Seibert tried out for the Raiders

OL Ross Pierschbacher tried out for the Cardinals

CB AJ Parker tried out for the Seahawks

DB Juju Hughes tried out for the Raiders

As of Wednesday morning, none of the players were signed.

Texans work out LB Terrell Lewis as part of 5-man group

The Houston Texans worked out former Alabama linebacker Terrell Lewis as part of a five-player group.

The Houston Texans taking a look at available talent to add to their organization.

The Texans worked out a total of five players Tuesday according to a league source.

Houston worked out defensive end Michael Dogbe, a former Arizona Cardinals 2019 seventh-round pick. After leaving in 2022, Dogbe spent the offseason and training camp with the Jacksonville Jaguars, but did not make the final roster.

The Texans also worked out defensive tackle Bruce Hector, who has been with six NFL organizations since 2018 either on active or offseason rosters. Hector recently was with the New York Jets through training camp.

Houston brought in former Alabama linebacker Terrell Lewis. A former Los Angeles Rams 2020 third-round pick, Lewis also spent time with the Chicago Bears in 2022.

The Texans worked out former Arkansas-Pine Bluff tackle Mark Evans, who spent time with the New Orleans Saints as an undrafted free agent.

Another offensive lineman the Texans worked out was Jamarco Jones, a former Seattle Seahawks 2018 fifth-round pick. Jones also spent the 2022 season with the Tennessee Titans.

Houston also worked out former Minnesota Vikings 2021 sixth-round defensive tackle Jaylen Twyman, who also spent part 2022-23 with the Miami Dolphins’ practice squad and offseason roster.

Jets sign veteran defensive lineman Bruce Hector

The Jets have signed veteran defensive lineman Bruce Hector despite working out for the New York Giants recently.

The New York Jets have an intriguing defensive line unit and they’ll be adding more depth during training camp. According to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero, the Jets have signed veteran defensive lineman Bruce Hector.

Before joining the Jets, Hector reportedly worked out for the New York Giants in hopes to land in New York. It remains to be seen if the Jets had any workout scheduled for Hector before they elected to sign him on Monday.

Hector began his career as an undrafted free agent out of South Florida in 2018 with the Philadelphia Eagles. After spending two seasons with the Eagles, Hector has bounced around to multiple teams, including the Arizona Cardinals, Carolina Panthers, and Detroit Lions.

Throughout his career, Hector has combined for only seven tackles, two quarterback hits, and half a sack.

Upon joining the Jets, he’ll look to earn a depth role behind Quinnen Williams, Al Woods, Solomon Thomas, Quinton Jefferson, and Tanzel Smart in the interior of the defensive line. Or at the very least, he’s hoping to secure a spot on New York’s practice squad.

Patriots reportedly worked out three players on Monday

The start of training camp is only a couple of days away, and the New England Patriots are still trying to fill spots on their roster.

They reportedly had three players in the building for a workout on Monday, including defensive tackle Bruce Hector, linebacker Diego Fagot and wide receiver Jalen Hurd.

Hector, who was drafted this year by the XFL’s Arlington Renegades, hasn’t played a meaningful NFL snap since he was with the Detroit Lions in 2021. Fagot hasn’t played a snap in the league, period, after being signed and waived last year by the Baltimore Ravens.

Meanwhile, Hurd, a former third-round draft pick for the San Francisco 49ers, has yet to get on the field due to injuries.

The Patriots are slated to start training camp on Wednesday.

They could use help at defensive tackle if veteran Lawrence Guy Sr. continues to hold out, and the receiver position is pretty much a revolving door at this point. An addition to the running back position also isn’t out of the question.

If anything, this is proof that roster building never really ends, even with the regular season right around the corner.

From now until the start of the season, we’ll be counting down each day by revisiting the players who have worn that specific jersey number.

There have been some memorable players to don the number, including legendary Bears head coach Mike Ditka.

With 90 days until kickoff, here’s a look at every player to ever wear No. 98 for the Eagles (via Pro Football Reference):

Tracking all former Lions now playing in the XFL

How many of the 19 ex-Lions do you remember?

The new season the XFL kicks off this weekend. Fans tuning into the spring football league will recognize many of the names, including several former Lions.

There are ex-Lions dotting the rosters of the eight XFL teams. Many were only in Detroit for a quick stop, be it a training camp or draft pick or practice squad stint. But they still earned recognition as Detroit Lions at some point.

Here are the players in the XFL with Lions ties.

What former Lions were selected in the XFL draft this week?

The XFL held its draft this week and some former Lions were among the players selected

The XFL is back for another go-around. The league is slated to play its second season in 2023 after the first season of the XFL reboot was crushed early by the COVID-19 pandemic.

The upstart league held its player draft this week. The XFL does things a little differently, with the quarterbacks all going first, followed by the rest of the offensive skill positions, then the defensive backs and pass rushers, followed by the linemen. It’s an eight-team league that uses a snake draft format like your typical fantasy football league.

There were quite a few players with ties to the Detroit Lions selected in the XFL draft. Most of them were from Lions training camp or preseason rosters.

These XFL players all have some Lions experience.

Lions to waive DT Bruce Hector

Lions to waive DT Bruce Hector after one season

The Detroit Lions have opted to waive defensive tackle Bruce Hector, per numerous reports.

Hector came to the Lions in 2021 after being waived by the Tennessee Titans. The fourth-year vet played sparingly, recording five total tackles in 52 defensive snaps. He had been bouncing between the second and third-team defense throughout camp and was noted for his run defense.

Hector could be a player who interests other teams looking for help shoring up the defensive line.

Lions reveal the 4 protected practice squad players for Week 1

The protection means that another team cannot sign these players to their active roster until the protection ends after this week’s games are done

Fresh off creating the team’s 16-player practice squad, the Detroit Lions have revealed the first week’s protected players from the practice players.

Protecting practice squad players is a wrinkle that was added last season and carries over due to overwhelmingly positive reception from both teams and players. Each team can protect up to four players each week, which means another team cannot sign those practice squad players to their active rosters. The protection ends after the week’s games are complete.

The Lions chose to protect safety Jalen Elliott, defensive end Bruce Hector, kicker Zane Gonzalez and quarterback Steven Montez for Week 1. Montez was signed to the practice squad after cutdowns, while the others have been with Detroit since training camp.
