The weekend is drawing near which means that Florida sports are kicking into high gear — well, even higher than it has been. The midweek action has included the women’s swim team and the men’s and women’s diving teams, as well as the softball squad and the women’s basketball team. Then tomorrow, the schedule get’s really packed, including the opening game of the No. 1 baseball team’s schedule.

But we will worry about that tomorrow, for today let us go over the more recent events.

Gators News: Winning weekend for the Gator Nation

Welcome to the month of November, Gators fans! It is the best time of year to be in Gainesville as the weather continues to cool off while the football team continues to heat up — and heat up they did just before the halftime whistle on Saturday en route to an important 41-17 win over the Missouri Tigers.

We have plenty of coverage from the game, so let us jump into the other sports in action from this past weekend in Florida athletics, starting with the volleyball team’s pair of shutout wins over the Alabama Crimson Tide in back-to-back home matches on Friday and Saturday. The squad is now 4-0 on the year with four games left in the season.

The soccer team also took to the field on Friday, but once again fell short by a single goal, 2-1, at home against the Tennessee Volunteers. The struggling Lady Gators are now 1-4-1 this year heading into the final two games of the schedule.

The men’s swimming and diving team suffered a 164.5-134.5 loss on the road to the Georgia Bulldogs in their season-opening meet on Friday. Florida’s record against the ‘Dawgs fell to 60-19-3 all-time and 5-4-1 over the previous 10 meets.

Meanwhile, the women also dropped their match with the UGA, 184-116, in Athens. The win for Georgia snaps a two-win streak in the series by the Gators and improves their all-time series record with a mark of 19-15.

Finally, both the men’s and women’s cross country teams competed on Friday at the SEC Championships. The guys finished seventh in the meet on 200 points while the gals finished ninth on 257 points. This was the final race of 2020.

Gators News: Wide assortment of Florida sports on deck today

Swimming and diving, cross country, soccer and volleyball are all on the agenda Thursday as UF sports gets into the swing of the fall season

[jwplayer 66HxiJ8R]

Saturday is nearly here Gators fans, with both college football and several other sports on the weekend agenda for University of Florida athletics. While the clock ticks down to game time, let us take a look at what is going on around the sports world.

At the top of the news, while the Southeastern Conference made it three weeks before its first coronavirus postponement, the Big Ten’s remade plan for the regular season has already fallen apart after just one week of play. The conference’s inability to play even two weeks of the regular season without having a game canceled due to COVID-19 highlights the stupidity of trying to force nine games into nine weeks in an effort to gain ground in the College Football Playoff race.

The lone Gators team in action yesterday was the women’s golf team, who finished up competition at the East Lake Cup in Atlanta. The squad finished its final round of the fall season with authority, claiming four straight matches to clinch third place in the final results.

Today, the No. 10 women’s and No. 3 men’s swimming and diving teams take on the Georgia Bulldogs, whose teams rank No. 4 and No. 8 in the nation, respectively, in Athens. The competition is the first of the fall season for both teams.

The cross country team kicks off the SEC Championships Thursday morning after participating in just three events the past month. The meet is hosted by LSU and is being held in Baton Rouge.

Gators soccer will also see action today against the Tennessee Volunteers in Knoxville, Tenn. The Lady Gators enter with a 1-3-1 record during a hard-luck season and will look to get back on track with a win against the 2-3-1 Vols.

Finally, the fourth-ranked Florida volleyball squad heads to Tuscaloosa for a back-to-back match with the Alabama Crimson Tide. Florida boasts a 2-0 record on the year while Bama is winless in two matches.

The Volunteers football team emerged victorious Saturday night over the Missouri Tigers, earning a postseason bid for the first time in three seasons. Meanwhile, the swimming and diving team had a record-breaking effort at the Tennessee Invitational while the women’s volleyball team split a pair of matches over the weekend. Additionally, the men’s basketball team looks to extend their perfect start tonight while the Lady Vols get set to face Arkansas-Pine Bluff on Tuesday evening.

Men’s basketball takes on Chattanooga

The 20th-ranked Tennessee Volunteers men’s basketball team takes on the Chattanooga Mocs tonight at Thompson-Boling Arena. The 4-0 Vols look to extend their season-opening winning streak to five against their Southern Conference foes.

The Volunteers and the Mocs have tangled 39 times on the hardwood over the years, with the Vols dropping their last match, 82-69. However, the Big Orange leads the all-time series, 33-6, and sports a 94-17 all-time record against teams from the Southern Conference.

A win would extend UT’s Division I-leading home winning streak to 30 games and also give Tennessee a 52-14 record as a ranked team during the Barnes era, per the Associated Press Top 25 Poll. Head coach Rick Barnes lost his only previous match against the Mocs, that same game that the Vols last lost to them opening the season three years ago.

Tipoff is slated for 7 p.m. ET on SEC Network, and can be heard on local Vol Network affiliates.

The weekend is nearly here, but the excitement over Vols athletics have already begun. While the football team is gearing up for its pivotal road match against Missouri, the Tennessee swimming and diving team has started off on a tear, and a couple of golfers have made the top ranks. Additionally, the Lady Vols volleyball team get set to face Alabama tonight.

Day 1 of the Tennessee Invitational

The Vols swimming and diving teams both started out strong on Thursday, setting 48 combined personal bests to open the Tennessee Invitational.

Three Lady Vols swam sub-22 second 50 meter times either in their sprint or as a split in a relay. Bailey Grinter’s 21.95 seconds mark in the 50 meter sprint was her first under 22 seconds and was the fifth best all-time in Tennessee history.

The men’s team had five swimmers place on the top 10 board, led by Matthew Garcia who lowered his career-best in the 200 meter individual medley twice on Thursday; in doing so he set the program’s fourth-fastest 200 meter IM time at 1:44.71.

The meet continues today and tomorrow with preliminary races in the morning and the finals at 5:30 p.m. ET this evening.
