Marcus Davenport’s goal for 2020? Outplay Cameron Jordan

New Orleans Saints defensive end Marcus Davenport has a simple goal for 2020: outplay Cameron Jordan, the All-Pro who had 15.5 sacks in 2019

[jwplayer 2CPn5E98-ThvAeFxT]

Expectations are high for Marcus Davenport. The big defensive end has fought through injuries early in his New Orleans Saints career, slowed by a critical turf toe issue in 2018 before getting sidelined with a Lisfranc break in 2019.

Despite those setbacks, he only needs to log seven sacks in 2020 to crack the Saints’ top-20 sack leaders in franchise history. He bagged six sacks in 13 games last year, and has already notched more of them in first two years put together (10.5) than the superstar lining up opposite him: Cameron Jordan, who racked up nine sacks between his first two seasons.

Davenport has taken what Jordan’s taught him and ran with it. The two got closer during the long offseason while rehabbing injuries (Davenport had his foot issue, while Jordan dealt with post-season surgery), spending a lot of time in the trainer’s room, and Davenport took Jordan’s lessons to heart.

“I had the chance to be around Cam and you know, watch how he works. And so my goal is, shoot, I’m trying to be better than Cam,” Davenport said in a media conference call. Obviously he’s one of the best and I think that’s a good goal, try to model (after him). I would say my aspirations (are) to just try to be better. He always says ‘1% better each day’ and so if I can do better than Cam, I’m doing something right.”

Jordan had a personal-best 15.5 sacks of his own in 2019, so that’s quite a lofty goal to chase. And Davenport knows that. But the 23-year old already understands that the NFL season is a marathon, not a sprint, and day-to-day consistency is what will help win the day.

He continued: “I just say better than Cam when I just talk about statistics. I tell Cam I always want one more sack than he has. And so when I think of it as like more of a competition. That’s a driving force always present.”

If nothing else, that’s some serious motivation. And Davenport achieving anything close to Jordan’s production would be tremendous. He started the 2019 season on pace to create nearly 100 quarterback pressures, and still showed great growth over his rookie-year performance. If Davenport’s body recovers well, he just might be able to beat his own sky-high expectations.

Jadeveon Clowney will be ‘ready to go whenever the time comes’

Free-agent defensive end Jadeveon Clowney stated that he will be ‘ready to go whenever the time comes’ despite his rehab from surgery.

Defensive end Jadeveon Clowney is still without an NFL team but recently stated his intention to sign with a club before the start of the 2020 season barring postponement or cancellation due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Clowney believes his long rehabilitation from his sports hernia surgery has created skepticism among teams, although it has also repeatedly been reported that his asking price is too high for most teams’ preferences.

“It might have (slowed the process) a little more than expected,” Clowney told Fox 26 Houston in May. “I don’t know if people think I’m hurting because of what I went through, because of the core (injury), or previous years… I don’t know. I just want to let people know I’m ready. I’m gonna be ready to go whenever the time comes and whoever I sign with is gonna get the best version of me. I’m working, I’m staying ahead of schedule and I’m going to be ready to go when training camp starts.”

Clowney previously stated that he is open to a reunion with the Seattle Seahawks, but there will be many implications including cap space and other teams attempting to court him. With the pandemic still active and Clowney’s still undecided, it is up in the air where he will call home in 2020.

Seahawks rookie TE Colby Parkinson undergoes surgery for broken foot

Seattle Seahawks rookie tight end Colby Parkinson has undergone surgery for a broken foot he sustained over the 2020 NFL offseason.

The Seattle Seahawks’ tight end corps has taken yet another hit this offseason. Rookie tight end Colby Parkinson suffered a broken foot and has undergone surgery to repair the injury, according to NFL.com’s Ian Rapoport.

“Seahawks fourth-round pick TE Colby Parkinson suffered a broken fifth metatarsal in his foot while running a route this offseason, source said,” Rapoport tweeted. “The Stanford product had surgery on the Jones fracture on June 2 and has been in Seattle rehabbing the ailment.”

Rapoport did not provide further details on the injury, nor did he indicate when or where it occurred.

The Seahawks selected Parkinson in the fourth round of the 2020 NFL Draft out of Stanford to bolster a tight end group that was riddled with injuries last season.

No timeline was given for Parkinson’s recovery. The rookie now joins a growing list of players around the NFL who have suffered injuries during their offseason workouts away from team facilities.

K.J. Wright says he is ahead of schedule in shoulder surgery recovery

Seattle Seahawks linebacker K.J. Wright stated that he is currently ahead of schedule in his recovery from his offseason shoulder surgery.

On Thursday, Seattle Seahawks linebacker K.J. Wright told Sports Radio 950 KJR that his recovery from his shoulder surgery earlier this offseason is progressing smoothly.

“Health is good,” Wright said. “I’m ahead of schedule of where I need to be and if there’s a football season I plan on being out there game one.”

General manager John Schneider publicly expressed his hope back in April that Wright would be back in time for the 2020 NFL season.

“K.J. just had surgery. He’s rehabbing from his surgery,” Schneider said then. “I’m not sure of the timeline on when he’s going to be back. Hopefully, he makes it back on time, and we’ll see how it goes. It’s just a weird offseason. I mean for everybody, but especially for guys that have had offseason surgery.”

Time will tell if Wright is 100% healthy for the upcoming season, but the news he is on the mend is encouraging for Seattle’s linebacking corps.

Broncos OL Elijah Wilkinson had ‘minor clean up’ on left foot

Broncos offensive lineman Elijah Wilkinson should be healthy in time for training camp.

Denver Broncos versatile offensive lineman Elijah Wilkinson had left foot surgery this offseason, the 25-year-old offensive lineman revealed on his Instagram page on Sunday.

“I have received some questions on my foot,” Wilkinson wrote. “Minor clean up from last season and will be ready to go when camp opens. Excited to get going.”

Wilkinson (6-6, 329 pounds) suffered an ankle injury late last season after starting 12 games at right tackle as an injury fill-in for Ja’Wuan James. He has started 19 games in his career, splitting time between guard and tackle.

Wilkinson received a second-round tender this offseason and he is set to compete with Garett Bolles for the starting left tackle job this summer. If he doesn’t win a starting job, Wilkinson will likely be the top backup swing guard/tackle in 2020.

In 19 starts, Wilkinson has been penalized six times and has allowed 11.5 sacks, according to STATS LLC. After earning $3.259 million on a one-year tender this season, Wilkinson will be an unrestricted free agent in 2021.

Former Notre Dame baseball player and current Baltimore Orioles outfielder Trey Mancini underwent surgery this week to remove a malignant tumor from his colon. There is no word on how long he’ll be sidelined, not like that feels important at this point.

Saturday the Orioles outfielder released the following video on Twitter, thanking fans for all their well-wishes and messages during this tough time.

Mancini last played on March 2 before exiting the Orioles vs. Rays game after two at bats.

Mancini’s 35 home runs and 99 RBI in 2019 both led the Orioles.

Kaden Elliss talks injury progress, new Saints linebackers coach Michael Hodges

New Orleans Saints linebacker Kaden Elliss saw his rookie year ended by injury, but he’s working to return in 2020 and work with a new coach

[jwplayer t8N0wnFu-ThvAeFxT]

New Orleans Saints linebacker Kaden Elliss didn’t have quite the rookie he anticipated last season, going down in Week 3 with a torn ACL. He’s been diligently rehabbing his surgically-repaired knee, and took some time to speak with host Chris Rosgovlou on the “Straight-Up Saints” podcast about his experience. Last year’s seventh-round pick out of Idaho also shared his take on the Saints’ replacement for linebackers coach Mike Nolan, who was hired away by the Dallas Cowboys.

Nolan was succeeded by his former assistant, Michael Hodges. And that’s a move that Elliss welcomed, having seen firsthand the work Hodges had put in to earn it. Elliss said, “I’m so excited about Coach Hodges getting that promotion. He’s an amazing guy and has such a hunger and passion to get better everyday. The move [Nolan to Dallas] is what it is — it’s a business. But I’m also very excited where we are. I’m super excited to have Coach Hodges running this room and I know the other guys are too.”

Like teammate Alex Anzalone, who recently announced that he was “Good to go,” following 2019 shoulder surgery, Elliss is eager to get back on the field. While he projects as a backup middle linebacker in 2020 (filling in as Anzalone’s understudy, incidentally), Elliss was also a prominent member of the special teams units during his brief appearances early last season. He also suggested this year’s organized team activities as a potential return date.

Elliss continued, “I’m working down here with the staff and they’re doing an awesome job helping me get better than I’ve ever been. It’s been a goal of mine to be ready for OTAs. We’re still working toward that goal, but we’ve got a little while longer to see how a couple more things go.”

The Saints typically hold OTAs in late May and early June, following weekend-long rookie minicamp practices. This gives them an opportunity to fill out the offseason 90-man roster while auditioning undrafted rookies and veteran free agents. If Elliss is able to suit up, it would give the coaching staff a great barometer of where he’s at as a player post-surgery, and where he might be able to slot in for 2020. With a familiar presence on hand in Hodges, it’s a safe bet that the Saints will do what they can to put Elliss in the best position to succeed.

Women’s Basketball: Celeste Taylor earns Big 12 Weekly Honors

Texas freshman guard Celeste Taylor had a huge week in helping lead the women’s team to back-to-back wins. She picked up two Big 12 honors.

The Texas women’s team has found themselves on a bit of a hot streak, after dropping three of their last four games the Longhorns have won two-straight. Part of the spark came from freshman guard Celeste Taylor. She recorded her first career double-double with 22 points and 10 rebounds against the number 25 team TCU. Taylor followed up that game with a career-high 27 points against the Oklahoma Sooners.

For her efforts in the two wins, Taylor picked up both the Big 12 Freshman of the Week and Co-Player of the Week. She shares the player of the week honors with Baylor’s senior forward Lauren Cox. The two players will be on the floor together this Thursday in the final road matchup of the regular season for Texas.

Taylor will look to keep her hot streak going as the women try to upset the number two ranked Baylor Bears.

Jase Febres to Have Knee Surgery, Out For the Season

Shaka Smart said on Monday afternoon that Jase Febres will be having surgery on his knee. Febres is expected to miss the rest of the season.

Head Coach Shaka Smart told reporters on Monday afternoon that junior guard Jase Febres will be having surgery on his knee this week. Due to the procedure, Febres is expected to miss the rest of the season.

Suffering the injury against the Feb 8th matchup against Texas Tech, Febres has missed six consecutive games. While healthy, Febres was averaging 9.4 points, 2.4 rebounds, and 0.9 assists per game in 23 games.

Since the injury, the Longhorns are 4-2, currently on a four-game winning streak. Other guards Andrew Jones, Matt Coleman, and Courtney Ramey have stepped up in his absence, picking up the scoring.

Now making an NCAA Tournament push with their guard who was averaging 30.5 minutes per game, Texas will have a ‘next man up’ mentality. Also dealing with other injuries, Shaka Smart’s squad is growing thin.

Finishing up the regular season this week on the road to Oklahoma and at home to Oklahoma State, the Longhorns are just a couple wins away from clinching a berth to the NCAA Tournament.
