Baylor upset does Notre Dame huge favor!

Nobody in the nation was bigger Baylor fans today than Notre Dame and the Irish are happy with the result!

Baylor won the Big 12 championship with a thrilling 21-16 win over Oklahoma State on Saturday afternoon.  The Bears walk out of AT&T Stadium with the conference championship trophy but the biggest winner from the result is none other than Notre Dame.

The Irish, who entered championship weekend without a game to play and a lot of watching and rooting to do now have a more clear path to the College Football Playoff.

The loss eliminates Oklahoma State from playoff contention and theoretically moves Notre Dame up to fifth.  Now Notre Dame shifts their focus to the SEC Championship where they’ll be huge Georgia fans this afternoon, hoping for the Dawgs to hand Alabama a second loss and bump the Tide from the top-four.

Stay tuned!

Joel Klatt releases his new college football top-10 rankings

What is your current top 10?

If you were hoping for mayhem in college football this weekend you got it.  Although Ohio State’s win over Michigan State wasn’t an upset by any means, the 56-7 thrashing was eye-opening.

As was the slightly favored Utah Utes blowing out No. 3 Oregon 38-7 in Salt Lake City.

So what will happen in the rankings and who is playing the best football in the nation as we head to the final week of the regular season?

Joel Klatt of Fox Sports released his top-ten rankings on Saturday night.  Here is how those appeared:

Notre Dame’s updated path to the College Football Playoff

It might not be likely but you’re at least able to see a path now.

Oh, and Go @thebadgerswire! Huge Wisconsin fans here.

Notre Dame got through the their road test at Virginia without issue as they steamrolled the shorthanded Cavaliers, 28-3.  It wasn’t the prettiest of showings but it worked as the Fighting Irish defense but on a display against freshman quarterback Jay Woolfolk.

Now Notre Dame will sit and wait to see where they check-in with the latest set of College Football rankings as the new ones will be released on Tuesday night.

As long as they don’t fall though (and why would they?) the Irish should be in as good of shape as they could possibly ask for at this point.

Add Another – Pac-12 Cancels Football this Fall

Just hours after the Big Ten set the tone the Pac-12 followed suit and joined the Big Ten in cancelling football this fall.

It didn’t take long for the Pac-12 to again follow the Big Ten’s lead.  Under two hours after the Big Ten announced their were cancelling football in 2020 the Pac-12 is about to do the same.

A news conference had been scheduled by the conference for this afternoon and now it appears we have confirmation that the conference will be cancelling all sports this fall.

The Pac-12 joins the Big Ten, Mountain West, MAC, Connecticut and Massachusetts as the conferences and teams that have fully cancelled football for 2020.

No word yet on what the remaining Power Five conferences plan to do, including the ACC which Notre Dame will be a part of for this fall.

Report: ACC Moving Forward Attempting to Play Football in 2020

There were rumors that the Pac-12 would be just behind the Big Ten and cancel their season as well, but instead we sit at at almost 6:00 pm. ET on Monday and there has been no official word of any additional cancellations.

It’s a roller coaster ride of a day yet again in college football.  It began with the Big Ten seemingly cancelling their season before they came out with leaks that said previous reports were incorrect.

There were rumors that the Pac-12 would be just behind the Big Ten and cancel their season as well, but instead we sit at at almost 6:00 pm. ET on Monday and there has been no official word of any additional cancellations.

We do have a new report out however that one Power Five conference is going to attempt to play football this fall.  Pat Forde of Sports Illustrated is reporting this evening that after meeting today, ACC athletic directors are “moving forward in an attempt to play”.

Notre Dame has obviously joined the ACC for the 2020 season and for those hoping there is football in 2020, it’s a bit of good news.

It’s worth noting that there is no guarantee of anything with that, just that an attempt will be made to play.  If anything it’s good news for the chances of college football in 2020 that an attempt is reportedly still being made to play.

This is going to be a crazy week and I feel like the reports and backtracks are only going to speed up before they slow down.

As always, stay tuned as we’ll have it all covered for you at Fighting Irish Wire.

When Will NCAA Allow College Sports to Return?

Will we have college football in 2020? The NCAA released a plan for a return to the playing field for college sports in 2020.

We sit here on May 7 with plenty wondering when we will get sports back.  Sure, NASCAR hits the track in ten days in front of an empty crowd but when might we get college sports back?  The NCAA has finally given at least a hint of that.

The NCAA has released their three phases of re-socialization which we’ll examine a bit here as the organization offered a premise for resuming practice and competition.

Four-Star ’21 Safety Lists Notre Dame in Final 12

Kendal Daniels is a top defensive back in the ’21 recruiting class – announced his top-12 schools Tuesday. See who Notre Dame is up against

The hunt remains on for Notre Dame and their 2021 recruiting class as it currently sits seventh nationally in the 247Sports rankings but the Irish remain in play for several key targets.  Although still probably a bit of a long-shot to land his commitment, Notre Dame made the top 12 for safety Kendal Daniels today.

Daniels, a four-star recruit from Beggs, Oklahoma, announced his 12 finalists on Twitter late Tuesday afternoon.

Notre Dame joins five SEC schools including Alabama, Georgia and LSU while home-state Oklahoma and Oklahoma State both also made his cut.  Clemson and Florida State both made it from the ACC while the only Pac-12 school listed is Oregon.

Daniels’s athleticism sticks out on tape but so does his instincts.  I’m not saying he’s Ed Reed when I say this because pretty much nobody ever has been but his ability to read a play compared to everyone else on the field is noticeable – just watch the tape and notice him headed to where the ball will soon be headed, it’s impressive.   Daniels also has the speed to make plays which is clearly obvious above.

Whoever ends up getting him is going to be getting a player that certainly seems to have the football IQ to make an early impact.
