LSU falls in USA TODAY Sports college football re-rank after Week 2

The Tigers won in blowout fashion, but they slipped further in this week’s 1-131 re-rank.

LSU looked like a much-improved football team on Saturday night, but even a dominating win over Southern can’t undo the disappointing Week 1 loss to Florida State.

The Tigers took quite a hit in the USA TODAY Sports rankings of all 131 FBS teams last week, and despite the big win, they fell even further in this week’s edition. Now, LSU (1-1) sits at No. 56, three spots lower than it did in last week’s rankings from Paul Myerberg.

It’s disappointing to see after a performance against the Jaguars that was impressive, even given the quality of the opponent. The Tigers scored 37 points in the first quarter, the most in a single quarter in program history.

They’ll have the chance to rise in the rankings quite a bit this week, though. Mississippi State (No. 38) comes to Baton Rouge to open SEC play on Saturday night fresh off a road win against Arizona. A win in that game — as a home underdog, no less — would go a long way to rehabilitate the national perception of this year’s Tigers team.

Jayden Daniels rated as top QB in the SEC by ESPN’s QBR

Daniels has impressed in his first two games

After two games, ESPN’s QBR metric likes [autotag]Jayden Daniels[/autotag]. The Tigers’ QB sits atop the SEC in the latest QBR ratings.

ESPN describes QBR as a rating “which values the quarterback on all play types on a 0-100 scale adjusted for the strength of opposing defenses faced.” Daniels’ QBR is now 90.9.

Daniels’ total EPA of 14.6 also leads the league, putting him just ahead of Arkansas‘ K.J. Jefferson. Daniels’ QBR is good enough for fifth in the country. Max Duggan, Caleb Williams, Jalon Daniels, and Drake Maye sit ahead of the LSU starter.

At this point, Tiger fans seem to be happy with what they have seen from Daniels. There were some struggles in the first half against Florida State, but Daniels has been improving and looks in control of the offense. His legs have added another dimension to this offense that hasn’t been there in some time.

WATCH: LSU fan casually strolled on the field during game action on Saturday night, and the reactions were hilarious

He was so nonchalant about it.

Rowdy (and likely inebriated) fans running onto the field during play is nothing unique. It happens literally all the time.

Generally, though, they aren’t this nonchalant about it.

During LSU’s 65-17 blowout win against Southern on Saturday night, a Tigers fan ran onto the field during live action, though “ran” may not be the best choice of words. More like “wandered.”

The fan walked through the end zone and reached the 10-yard line during the play before he was apprehended by police following a brief game of cat and mouse. It was a semi-viral moment from a rout that didn’t feature many newsworthy situations.

Here were some of the best reactions and jokes on social media.

PHOTOS: Tigers take down Southern 65-17 in home opener

Here were the best shots from the Tigers’ home opener as Brian Kelly won his first game with the program.

The Brian Kelly era may not have started the way Tigers fans hoped, but his first win at LSU came in blowout fashion on Saturday night.

His squad boat-raced Southern in the home-opener, winning 65-17 in what was the first-ever matchup between the two programs that sit just miles away from each other. The game was never in doubt, and it was not LSU’s toughest test this fall.

Still, it allowed the team to tighten some things up ahead of the start of SEC play against Mississippi State, with both sides of the ball looking better in this one.

Here were the best photos from Kelly’s first win as the coach of the Tigers.

Instant Analysis: LSU dominates Southern for first win of 2022 season

The Tigers showed out in Brian Kelly’s home debut.

Well, that’s more like it!

After a disappointing Week 1 loss against Florida State, the Tigers got their first victory in 2022 in Brian Kelly’s home debut. LSU dominated Southern in the first-ever matchup between the two Baton Rouge programs, earning a commanding 65-17 victory ahead of the beginning of SEC play next weekend.

The Jaguars fumbled the opening kickoff, giving LSU the ball just outside the red zone. The Tigers punched it in on a run from [autotag]Jayden Daniels[/autotag], and that set the tone for the rest of the game. LSU scored touchdowns on each of its first five possessions and netted a safety, all in the first quarter. The 37 resulting points were a program record for the most scored in a single quarter.

For Daniels’ part, it’s hard to find a single flaw with his outing. He completed 10 of his 11 passes for 137 yards and three touchdowns in addition to the score on the ground. LSU rectified Kayshon Boutte’s lack of touches in Week 1, as he caught five balls for 42 yards in addition to a 41-yard run. [autotag]Malik Nabers[/autotag] had a nice bounce-back after muffing two punts in Week 1, taking three catches for 81 yards and a score.

[autotag]Armoni Goodwin[/autotag] (12 carries, 85 yards, two touchdowns) and Noah Cain (10 carries, 51 yards, one touchdown) both found success on the ground, as well.

We even got to see backup quarterback [autotag]Garrett Nussmeier[/autotag], who entered the game early, but it wasn’t the best outing. He went just 13 of 23 for 183 yards and two interceptions, one of which was returned for a touchdown.

Though we have to take the defensive performance with a grain of salt given the opponent, it was a significant improvement. Southern totaled just 262 yards of offense, and true freshman linebacker [autotag]Harold Perkins[/autotag] made a big impact off the bench, leading the team in tackles with seven.

LSU forced three fumbles, and linebacker [autotag]Micah Baskerville[/autotag] had an interception returned for a touchdown.

It’s far from the toughest game on the Tigers’ schedule this fall, but they were able to improve in a lot of the areas that cost them against FSU, and they will look to push their winning streak to two when SEC play opens against Mississippi State next Saturday.

LSU Wire Roundtable: Predictions for Week 2 matchup against Southern

How will the Tigers respond to the loss to Florida State in their first-ever matchup against Southern?

LSU desperately needs to get things fixed before SEC play after it was plagued with problems in its Week 1 loss against Florida State.

Brian Kelly’s team has the perfect opportunity to do so on Saturday night when the Southern Jaguars make the cross-Baton Rouge trek to Tiger Stadium for what will be the first-ever matchup between the two schools.

It’s a sold-out crowd, and it should be an electric environment in spite of last week’s disappointing outcome. It’s the last chance to tune things up before SEC play starts against Mississippi State next week, and there’s a lot to improve on.

Here’s how the staff at LSU Wire sees things playing out.

Where can LSU show the most improvement against Southern?

Here are four areas where LSU can improve sooner rather than later.

Coming off the loss to Florida State, there is a lot LSU needs to work on.

We saw issues in just about every area of the game, even though some were to a lesser degree. Some of these problems improved throughout the game while others persisted all night.

[autotag]Brian Kelly[/autotag] said after the game that he takes responsibility and the coaches need to do a better job of putting their guys in a position to succeed. LSU will have the chance to work out some kinks against Southern, an FCS opponent.

The Tigers were in a similar spot last year after the loss to UCLA, coming back home to face an FCS opponent in Week 2. LSU beat McNeese 34-7. That game was more of a struggle than it should have been, and it would be nice to see LSU put together a more convincing win on Saturday night.

Here are some areas where LSU can show immediate improvement in Week 2.

7 things to know about LSU’s Week 2 matchup against Southern

Despite being separated by 20 minutes, Saturday will mark the first meeting between LSU and Southern University.

On Saturday, LSU will face Southern University in Tiger Stadium.

A.W. Mumford Stadium, where the Jaguars play, is a 20-minute drive from Tiger Stadium. Despite the proximity, this will be the first time the programs have met.

Among fans of Louisiana football and within the city of Baton Rouge, this game is being anticipated more than your average SEC vs. FCS game. On the field, LSU will be the heavy favorite, but Saturday will be a significant cultural event for the city.

It will also serve as a chance for LSU to work on some of the issues that plagued the Tigers in the loss to Florida State. Here are seven things to know about the matchup.

LSU baseball rolls in both games of Sunday matinee

The Tigers concluded a perfect weekend with two wins in Sunday’s doubleheader.

It was a beautiful day for a Sunday matinee at Alex Box Stadium as LSU finished off a four-game weekend going 4-0 and raising its overall record to 7-1 on the year.

The Tigers took down the Towson Tigers with an 11-1 win in the first slot of the Sunday doubleheader, and in the second game against the Southern Jaguars, they were even more dominant. LSU won that won 15-0 and is in good shape ahead of a difficult slate next weekend that features matchups against Big 12 foes in Oklahoma, Texas and Baylor

With a strong performance this weekend, the Tigers bounced back from a tough road loss to a good Louisiana Tech team. Let’s take a look at how it happened.

Next: LSU comes out on top in Tigers vs. Tigers showdown

Saturday’s alright for winning as LSU tops Southern in second weekend game.

The Tigers took the second leg of their four-game weekend slate with a 9-2 win over the Jaguars.

The Tigers won their second game of the weekend on Saturday, but things didn’t start off very positive in what was ultimately a 9-2 win over the Southern Jaguars.

Ma’Khail Hilliard got the start on the mound for LSU who allowed two earned runs in four innings of work. Tre Morgan led the Tigers at the plate going 4 for 5 with three RBI followed by Merrifield and Thompson who both finished 2 for 3

In the top of the fourth inning, the Jaguars drew first blood with an RBI triple which was followed up by an RBI single against Tigers starter Hilliard. Gavin Dugas then made a diving grab in the outfield to stop the bleeding at 2-0 Southern.

Hilliard was replaced by Coleman to start the top of the fifth. In the bottom of the fifth, the Tigers finally got on the board as Dylan Crews hit an infield single that brought Milazzo home from third. After recording four outs in 1 1/3 innings, Coleman exited the game with an injury and was replaced by Gervase who came in and struck out the final two batters of the inning with ease.

After a pair of singles in the bottom of the sixth inning by Jobert and Thompson, Gavin Dugas hit a two-RBI double into the gap in right-center field and the Tigers took their first lead of the ballgame at 3-2. After Millazo bunted Dugas over to third, Whit Merrifield brought him home on an RBI double down the third-base line to make it 4-2 LSU.

Tre Morgan then continued his great day with an RBI single to score Merrifield. Tre Morgan scored on a sac fly to left by Jacob Berry and after six full innings, LSU led 6-2. In the bottom of the seventh inning, Milazzo laid down a sacrifice bunt to bring home Thompson. Tre Morgan picked up his fourth hit of the day with a two-RBI single to make it 9-2 Tigers after seven innings.

Trent Vietmeyer came in at the top of the eighth inning as a relief pitcher and finished off the win.

LSU will play a doubleheader tomorrow with the first game against Towson at 11 a.m. CST before another matchup against the Jaguars at 5 p.m.
