South Carolina vs Georgia State Game Preview

Why Georgia State Will Win

The Panther offensive line is strong enough to be good from the start.

South Carolina’s defensive front might be good, but the Georgia State running game is going to be dangerous, the rotation of backs will be solid, and the receiving corps is among the best in the Sun Belt.

The Gamecocks need their pass rush to step up. They were great in the bowl game, but they struggled to get behind the line over the second half of the season. If they can’t get to Georgia State QB Darren Grainger, look out.

Week 1 CFN College Football Expert Picks

Why South Carolina Will Win

Can the Georgia State defense get off the field?

It was okay last season, but there isn’t a ton of bulk up front. The D is once again going to rely on big plays and takeaways to get the job done. Now the Panthers have to deal with an upgraded Gamecock passing game with a fantastic receiving corps for new QB Spencer Rattler to throw to.

South Carolina fans will be looking for explosion out of the upgraded attack, but as long as Rattler is his accurate self, and if the offense is moving on third downs, everything else should work. The Georgia State secondary isn’t good enough to take over if Rattler gets into a groove.

Week 1 Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews, Saturday

What’s Going To Happen

Ask Auburn fans how dangerous Georgia State can be.

The Tigers ended up winning 34-24, but it was a lot closer than that with the Panthers coming way too close to being able pull off the giant road shocker early last year.

Don’t be freaked out if this isn’t a South Carolina annihilation. Georgia State is very good, it’s not going to be fazed by the SEC setting, and the Gamecock offense might not be razor-sharp out of the box. However, the USC lines will take over, the defense will settle in, and Rattler will be great in the second half.

It’ll take a bit, but South Carolina will eventually pull away.

SEC Preseason Predictions For Every Game: Preview 2022

SEC preseason predictions for every game, predicted order of finish, and lookahead to the 2022 season.

The SEC doesn’t have Texas and Oklahoma quite yet, but as is, it’s still the nastiest football conference in college football with the SEC West an almost unfairly fantastic division.

Can Georgia replace enough parts and get back into the championship mix? With a schedule that misses Alabama and Texas A&M, maybe.

Can Alabama sidestep all of the landmines on a schedule that would be a total nightmare for just about anyone else?

How about all the 50/50 games with an improved Mississippi State, a stronger Tennessee, and resurgent Florida and LSU teams all likely to bring even more. South Carolina, Kentucky, Arkansas, and Auburn should all be dangerous enough to beat just about anyone on any given day, and …

Welcome to life in the SEC. There will be twist, turns, and a few crazy upsets.

After a wee bit of a down year overall – forgetting who played in the College Football Playoff National Championship – this level of play should be much higher across the board, making the 2022 SEC predictions for every game that much harder.

Dawn Staley on why she’d be a successful NBA coach one day

“I think I could be successful with whatever I apply myself to.”

Dawn Staley’s program at South Carolina is coming off one of the most dominant seasons in women’s college basketball history, going 35-2 and winning a national title with relative ease. While Staley is firmly entrenched in Columbia, she wasn’t shy about how she’d fare as an NBA head coach in a recent interview with Mackenzie Salmon.

“I think I could be successful with whatever I apply myself to,” Staley said. “The discipline that I have, and being successful [as I’ve been], are the same things that I would do if I was put in that situation.”

Staley signed a seven-year, $22.4 million contract with South Carolina prior to the 2021-22 season, making her the second-highest paid coach in women’s college basketball. She’s not going anywhere anytime soon, but she did say she sees no reason why women couldn’t coach men’s basketball at the highest level.

“I don’t think there’s a huge difference in coaching because it’s people. You’re coaching people,” Staley said. “The game strategy, tactics, schemes, all of that, can be learned. You really can’t learn to relate to people.

“Athletes want to win. They want to get better. They want relationships, they want someone to believe in them and they wanna believe in people. And once you have that dynamic … you can be truly successful.”

247Sports predicts Arkansas’ record through September

Arkansas is projected to live up to its’ high expectations through the first month of the season.

The Arkansas Razorbacks have higher-than-usual expectations for the 2022 season, and a good (or bad) first month could be a measuring stick of where they are as a program in year three under Sam Pittman.

Arkansas will play three of four games in September at home, which will take some of the pressure off as they face a challenging slate to open the season.

247Sports recently released their predictions of every SEC team’s record for the month of September, where they project Arkansas to enter October with a 4-0 record.

You can buy tickets to every Arkansas Razorbacks game at TicketSmarter.

Brad Crawford of 247Sports says that a perfect September will set up for a major showdown with Alabama when the calendar turns to October.

D.W.R Razorbacks Stadium might fall down before the kickoff against Alabama in October if both of those teams come into that one unbeaten. Arkansas hasn’t beaten the Crimson Tide in more than a decade, but could have the team to get it done this fall considering the preseason No. 1 won’t be tested in September. Getting there will be difficult for the Razorbacks, however. They open against Cincinnati, host South Carolina in Week 2 and then play Missouri State before a divisional showdown with Texas A&M. If Arkansas wins those four games, Sam Pittman’s crew is worthy of top 10 billing when Alabama comes to town.

Here’s a look at Arkansas’ September schedule:

Justin Young, Jon Lindstrom lead through 36 holes at the Golfweek International Mid-Am/Senior Championship

Eighteen holes remain to crown two individual and two team champions.

Eighteen holes remain before crowning the 2022 International Mid-Am and Senior champions. Separating themselves from the pack, two men pulled away in the individual race.

Justin Young holds the mid-am lead. Following an opening 4-under 68 with a 69 on Saturday, Young jumped from T-2 to solo first. Opening up a four-shot lead, Young will have plenty of chasers pursuing him Sunday.

Among those chasing is first round leader Marc Engellener. Posting an opening 67, Engellener stumbled Saturday with a 2-over 74. At 3 under for the tournament, he leads a group of five players hot on Young’s heels.

Philip Reale and Travis Woolf are both at 2 under with three more players at even par.

The mid-am team portion is simply waiting for the fat lady to stop her vocal practice. Team West Virginia (9 under) commands a 10-shot lead over the nearest squad, Team North Texas. Cam Roam (T-2), Philip Reale (T-7) and Sam O’Dell (T-12) rallied together for a combined score of 2-under 213. After being a counting score on Friday, Pat Carter (T-9) carded a 75 on Saturday.

Team South Texas (2 over), Team Fort Worth (3 over) and Team Alabama (5 over) all lurk within striking distance.

On the senior side, Jon Lindstrom has continued to build on an impressive week. Kicking the tournament off with an event-best 6-under 66, Lindstrom stayed put with an even par 72 on Saturday. Losing no ground, Lindstrom holds a one-shot lead heading to the final round.

Nipping at his heels is Wes McNulty. He built upon his 3 under first round with another under-par round. Firing a 2-under 70, he now finds himself a shot back and in prime position to apply pressure to Lindstrom on Sunday.

Not only are the two duking it out for the individual title, they’re both leading their teams toward a shared title.

McNulty’s Team Arkansas squad, sitting at 2 under, holds a two-stroke advantage over Lindstrom’s Team Colorado. Team North Carolina (East) lurks three shots behind Arkansas while Team Missouri (East) and Team Georgia (South) both are at 4 over.

With 18 holes left, four championships will be claimed on some of the most beautiful golf property in Pawleys Island, South Carolina, come days end on Sunday.

Preview: The 2022 International Mid-Am & Senior Championships

The best mid-ams and senior amateur golfers in the world are soon descending upon Pawleys Island, South Carolina.

The best mid-ams and senior amateur golfers in the world are soon descending upon Pawleys Island, South Carolina. The 2022 International Mid-Amateur & Senior Championship plays host to a who’s who of amateur golf. Considered as a major in the amateur golf world, the best of the best will be teeing it up August 4-7 for a piece of history.

Names like Paul Simson, Doug Hanzel, Bob Royak and Rusty Strawn all pop off the screen when looking at the senior roster.

Simson is one of the best American amateur golfers in the game’s history. Two U.S. Senior ams, a mini grand slam in 2010 winning the U.S., British, and Canadian Senior amateur championships in less than two months time, nine North & South victories (2 amateur wins, 7 senior amateur wins), and over 40 Carolinas Golf Association championships gives Simson a World Golf Hall of Fame worthy career.

Hanzel is coming off a win last month at the National Senior Hall of Fame tournament. Royak is constantly at the top of leaderboards and won the 2019 U.S. Senior amateur. Strawn is currently ranked No. 2 in the Golfweek Senior Amateur rankings, trailing Kevin VandenBerg, who is also in the field this week.

In all, 38 seniors in the field are ranked in the World Amateur Golf Rankings.

As for the mid-ams in the field this week, 13 are ranked in WAGR. Brett Viboch, ranked 1,599 in the world, is the top ranked mid-am at the event. Constantly at the top of the leaderboards both at USGA mid-ams and Northern California amateur championships, Viboch is due to break through.

Other notables in the field include Jay Livsey, Justin Young, Domingo Jojola, and Gant Bills.

Mike Stranz’s masterpieces Caledonia and True Blue are the courses playing host this week. With remnants of the rice plantations that once stood where the courses now reside, both tracks take a players best golf if they are going to claim a championship.

Games that the media says Georgia will lose in 2022

Media members predict that Georgia will lose these games in 2022

Georgia ran the table during the 2021 regular season, finishing with an unblemished 12-0 record.

The term ‘trap game’ was used frequently last year during Georgia’s run. It seemed like almost every week college football analysts were hyping up Georgia’s next matchup as a potential upset, yet every week they were proven incorrect.

Georgia has one of the more navigable schedules in the SEC this year, but by no means would it be considered easy. There’s tough games like Kentucky, Tennessee, Auburn, Florida and Oregon. The Dawgs will be favored in every game it plays this season, but that won’t stop the media from making bold offseason predictions about Georgia losing in an upset.

We compiled a few media predictions here:

Shane Beamer discusses South Carolina ‘set up as well as anybody in the country’ with NIL

Shane Beamer discusses South Carolina being set up as well as anybody in the country with NIL.

The Southeastern Conference media days are taking place at the College Football Hall of Fame and The Omni Atlanta Hotel at CNN Center in Atlanta, Georgia.

The 2022 media days are taking place July 18-21 and SEC Network is televising the annual event.

Second-year South Carolina head coach Shane Beamer took part in media days Tuesday.

Beamer was asked about name, image and likeness with the Gamecocks’ program.

“I think South Carolina is set up as well as anybody in the country, to be honest with you, from a name, image and likeness standpoint,” Beamer said. “We’re in the capital city of South Carolina. We’re the only show in town. We don’t compete with other pro sports in our state at the high, high level. South Carolina, the fan base, it’s evident how powerful it is. You look at what our players have done, a lot of these guys that are here today, Dakereon, Zacch Pickens, Jovaughn, have been able to capitalize on their name, image and likeness and utilize it the right way, the way the law was intended when it was implemented for sure, that those guys have been able to. You look at other student-athletes at our university, like Aliyah Boston on our basketball team, what she has been able to do from a name, image and likeness standpoint.

“I tell recruits this all the time, it’s not recruiting speak, when you talk about being well-positioned for name, image and likeness opportunities. I have a hard time finding somebody that’s in a better situation than we are.”

Record size hammerhead shark released out of respect

A pair of South Carolina anglers on Wednesday caught and released a hammerhead shark that was at least 400 pounds heavier than the longstanding state record, and perhaps rivaled the world record.

A pair of South Carolina anglers on Wednesday caught and released a hammerhead shark that was at least 400 pounds heavier than the longstanding state record, and perhaps rivaled the world record.

Primary angler Pete Quartuccio and a friend teamed to reel the nearly 14-foot shark to leader after an hourlong fight, whereupon it was tagged and set free by Outcast Sportfishing Capt. Chip Michalove.

Michalove estimated the shark’s weight at 1,000-plus pounds. The current South Carolina record, set in 1989, stands at 588 pounds. The world record is a 1,280-pound catch in 2006 off Boca Grande, Fla.

The shark put up such a ferocious struggle, Michalove said, that Quartuccio and his buddy were too exhausted to pose for photos while the massive predator was alongside the boat.

“They were so exhausted they could barely stand,” Michalove said. “Pete crashed on the cooler and laid there in exhaustion, and his friend was so tired that I barely convinced him to just hold the camera while I reached over and grabbed the shark’s head for one quick photo.

“I tried to get them to lean over for a picture, but they wouldn’t budge. So I threw a quick tag in the shark, popped the hook and sent her off.”

ALSO: Massive sea creature startles family on Mexican beach; video

Michalove said he spotted the same hammerhead circling a bait during a Tuesday charter. On Wednesday, close to shore in rough weather, Quartuccio, a veteran shark angler, was at the rod when the shark took his bait.

“She ripped off 400 yards in about 60 seconds,” Michalove recalled. “I released from the anchor and spun the boat to chase [the shark]. I knew she was going to be enormous, but I didn’t know of the enormity until we got her a little closer and I could see the width.”

The group knew the shark might eclipse the world record in size, but at no point considered killing the shark to obtain an official weight.

Said Michalove: “Fifteen years ago, I would’ve thrown a rope around her head and dragged her back to demolish the records. But these sharks have given me a good life and they’re too important to our fishery.

“We’ve recaptured so many tigers, lemons, bulls, I owe them everything. I’ve gotten a few messages on how I should’ve dragged her back, but there’s not even a question that we did the right thing.”

Notre Dame righty Roman Kimball reportedly transfers to South Carolina

Think the Irish will miss him?

Although Notre Dame is coming off a College World Series appearance, not everyone sees a chance to thrive in South Bend. One of them is right-handed reliever [autotag]Roman Kimball[/autotag], who is transferring to South Carolina according to 247Sports. Kimball just completed his freshman season with the Irish, making 17 appearances out of the bullpen. He had a 5.76 ERA and struck out 32 batters over 25 innings. This summer, he is pitching for the Chatham Anglers of the Cape Cod Baseball League.

Kimball, who hails from New Hartford, New York, went past one inning eight times with the Irish. His longest outing was four innings in a 5-1 Irish win over Valparaiso on April 19. He nearly equaled that in his lone game with the Anglers to this point, going three innings.

While this will be a tough loss for the Irish’s bullpen, Kimball obviously thought this decision through, so all we can do is wish him well with the Gamecocks.
