Jaguars announce inactives for Week 1 tilt vs. Washington

These players will have to wait another week to make their regular season debut for the #Jaguars

The Jacksonville Jaguars will kick off their 2022 season today against the Washington Commanders at 1 p.m. ET at FedEx Field in the rain. Both teams are in search of their first win in their new campaigns and have rebuilt their rosters in the offseason to get off to a fast start this year.

Jacksonville announced their inactives for the Week 1 matchup on Twitter Sunday morning:

Their decision to leave three defensive players inactive heading into the scrum is a testament to the faith they have in their depth on that side of the ball. Linebacker De’Shaan Dixon and rookie cornerback Montaric Brown were quiet stars of the Jaguars’ preseason but will have to wait until next week to see their first action in a game that counts.

With a stable of solid skill position players on offense, their decision to deactivate their newest receiver, Kendrick Pryor, is a sound strategic move. The choice to carry JaMycal Hasty over Snoop Conner as their third running back won’t make much of an impact on the outcome of the game and is likely to give Jacksonville their first glimpse of Hasty in the teal and black.

All of the players on the Jaguars’ list are rookies, with the exception of Daniel Thomas, who is in his third professional season. Dixon and Pryor were undrafted free agents back in April, while Conner and Brown were fifth and seventh-round selections respectively.

None of the players that were set as inactive were slated to be starters, nor were they included on the Jaguars’ injury reports earlier in the week. With these moves, head coach Doug Pederson has effectively revealed the core group of players he thinks will give Jacksonville the best chance to win games in 2022.

Stay tuned to Jaguars Wire as we bring you all the action from the team’s season opener today in Washington.

Six Jaguars poised for big performances vs. Steelers

These six players are set to prove that preseason football is anything but boring when the #Jaguars take on the #Steelers on Saturday night.

Though the outcome of this game is inconsequential to the Jacksonville Jaguars’ hopes of redemption in 2022, there are several players who could make their case for a roster spot with big performances against the Steelers. For teams in the middle of a rebuild, expectations are relatively low for anyone under contract who isn’t due a bunch of guaranteed money, and the door to significant playing time can swing wide open at any time.

Here are six Jaguars who are set to make their case for a roster spot against Pittsburgh in Jacksonville’s third preseason game:

2022 Jaguars training camp: 5 takeaways from Day 7

On Days 5 and 6 of Jags training camp, it was rookie Travon Walker who flashed in practice. But on Monday, rookie RB Snoop Conner showed off his skills on the offensive end.

The Jacksonville Jaguars took the practice field at Episcopal School of Jacksonville for their second fully-padded practice Monday. Just like Sunday,  it marked another intense day between the offense and defense, but in the end, it felt like both units put together balanced performances.

As for the coaching staff, it was Press Taylor who met with the media before practice to discuss some things before Thursday’s game against the Las Vegas Raiders. Unfortunately for fans, revealing the snap parameters for the offense wasn’t among those topics as he more so stuck to what he’s seen in training camp.

All of that said, here are the takeaways we garnered from Day 7 as the Jags took the field for their second week of camp on Monday:

Jaguars 2022 training camp preview: Running backs

One of the biggest question marks for the Jags roster is the running back position, where their top-2 players are coming off major injuries.

With training camp just nine days away, it’s time to start previewing every position on the Jacksonville Jaguars roster. We started with the quarterback position earlier this week, and now it’s time to move on to another important position on the offense when it comes to scoring: running back.

The Jags currently have six rushers listed on their roster. Their top player at the position, James Robinson, is one of the best players in the league at his position but is coming off a serious injury. As a result, it’s important to know what the Jags have behind him.

Here is a preview of the Jags’ full running backs group as we close in on camp:

The 6 best late-round rookie running backs in fantasy football

Unheralded rookie running backs who could make an impact.

Running backs often are the lifeblood of fantasy football championship rosters, and it behooves gamers to dig deeper than the next person when searching for an edge.

It’s a weak year for top-end rookie backs, highlighted by the New York Jets’ Breece Hall. Particularly this year, fantasy owners are likely to find value in the second half of drafts. The position is volatile and rife with injuries by year’s end. While knowing the top names is a must, seeing less obvious paths to playing time is arguably more important.

Aside from Hall, Seattle’s Kenneth Walker III (Round 8 ADP) and Buffalo’s James Cook (Round 9) typically round out the first rookie backs chosen. Each has merit in some regards. Walker probably has a more linear avenue to serious playing time, whereas Cook’s role is less clear — he currently profiles as a third-down back and even a slot option. Walker, conversely, offers little as a receiver but is built to handle a larger workload than Cook.

Jacksonville Jaguars running backs: What to expect in fantasy football

Will one back emerge as the primary weapon in Duval County?

Coming off yet another unmitigated disaster of a season, the Jacksonville Jaguars at least head into 2022 with the appearance of stability after Urban Meyer’s embarrassing tenure. To replace Meyer, the Jags tabbed Doug Pederson as their head coach; Pederson compiled a 42-37-1 record in five seasons with the Philadelphia Eagles and led the team to a Super Bowl title in 2017.

While this is a breakdown of the Jaguars running back situation, it’s important to note the presence of Pederson because of what his Eagles tenure tells us about how he likes to use his backs. During those five years in Philly, Pederson never had an running back top 180 carries or 900 yards in a single season. As such, we should expect a committee approach in Jacksonville. Now the questions become who will lead that committee? And what type of fantasy value should we anticipate?

3 things to know on Jaguars RB Snoop Conner

Here are three things to know about Jacksonville Jaguars rookie running back Snoop Conner.

The Jacksonville Jaguars took former Ole Miss running back Snoop Conner in the fifth round with the 154th overall pick in the 2022 NFL Draft in April. He’s in line to be the third back behind incumbent starter James Robinson and Travis Etienne.

It’s typically a little early for a franchise to use a fifth-round draft choice on a third-string running back, but this time it’s worth it for Jacksonville’s sake because Robinson and Etienne are returning off of season-ending injuries. Etienne missed his entire rookie campaign due to a foot injury he suffered in the preseason. Robinson suffered a torn Achilles back on Dec. 26 against the New York Jets.

Conner racked up 1,580 rushing yards while averaging 5.2 yards per rush and 26 touchdowns during his career. He also reeled in 32 catches for 225 receiving yards in his three-year stint with the Rebels. Last season, he posted 647 yards on 130 carries and 13 scores.

Here are three other things to know about Conner.

Podcast: Reviewing Jags’ 2022 draft class

On the latest episode of the @TDJaguarsPod, the crew reviewed the rest of the Jaguars 2022 draft class after previously looking at their Day 1 moves.

The highly anticipated 2022 NFL Draft has concluded for the Jacksonville Jaguars and the other 31 teams in the NFL. The Jags exited the annual event with seven selections, most of which were on the defensive side.

After reviewing the Jags’ Day 1 moves in the last episode of “Touchdown Jaguars!” Jags Wire contributor Phil Smith and I looked at the rest of the draft class in Episode 10. We also discussed the notable undrafted players they were able to add.

While looking into the decisions the Jags made on Day 2-3, we specifically discussed why the Jags added two cornerbacks (Montaric Brown and Gregory Junior) at the end of the draft, why the Jags selected Chad Muma after selecting Devin Lloyd, and much more.

Jaguars RB Snoop Conner talks about getting drafted and his running style

Jacksonville Jaguars RB Snoop Conner talks about getting drafted while picking up Wingstop and what kind of runner he is.

The memory of being selected in the NFL Draft is something most players will never forget. Many prospects hold a watch party at home with friends, families, and coaches but not running back Snoop Conner.

In an appearance on “Into the Night with Rick Ballou” on 1010XL, Conner said that he was picking up Wingstop when the Jaguars called to let him know that they would be selecting him in last month’s draft. Additionally, Conner talked about his style as a running back.

The Jaguars took the former Ole Miss tailback with the 157th overall pick in the fifth round of the 2022 NFL Draft. They selected Conner because they need another running back as James Robinson and Travis Etienne are returning from season-ending injuries.

With the Rebels, he only recorded 304 rushing attempts in his three-year career while running for 1,580 yards and 26 touchdowns. Conner also accumulated 32 passes for 225 receiving yards. He enters the NFL labeled as a one-cut runner by many scouts. Conner said he can do it all but prefers running toward the end zones instead of the sidelines.

“My main game is probably as a one-cut running back and try to run north and south,” he said. “I ain’t no guy that’s going to try to dance around you. I’m trying to score touchdowns, ain’t trying to dance.”

Conner should get a good look from the coaches as Robinson is currently recovering from an Achilles tear that he sustained in December. He won’t be back until around training camp, and Conner’s physical style matches his, which gives Etienne a good change-of-pace partner.

With rookie minicamp coming up, Conner will be one of the key names to watch this week. Alongside center Luke Fortner, Conner is the only addition the Jags made on the offensive side during the draft, so it would be huge if he’s one of the standouts this offseason.

Jaguars reveal jersey numbers for their 2022 rookie selections

The Jags have revealed the jersey numbers for their seven 2022 NFL Draft selections.

The Jacksonville Jaguars made seven selections in the draft last week, starting with notables Travon Walker and Devin Lloyd in Round 1. On Tuesday, the team revealed the numbers for each of those picks and some of the numbers are ones that fans are very familiar with.

Starting with Walker, he will be wearing the number many expected, and that’s No. 44. It was the number he wore at Georgia, and it’s also the number that was on the jersey he took pictures with at his introductory press conference. The number is one very familiar to Jags fans because it was one that former linebacker Myles Jack wore from the time he was drafted in 2016 until his release this offseason.

The Number Lloyd will wear is 33. That’s the number that was once worn by Jags greats and running backs Greg Jones and James Stewart. In college, Lloyd wore No. 0, but that’s a restricted number in the NFL.

As for the Day 2 picks, offensive lineman Luke Fortner will wear No. 79, which was his number with the Kentucky Wildcats. Linebacker Chad Muma will also wear his college  number from his days at Wyoming, which is the No. 48.

Then when it comes to the Day 3 picks, running back Snoop Conner took his number from Ole Miss (24). Cornerback Gregory Junior will wear the No. 30, although he wore No. 27 in college, while fellow cornerback Montaric Brown will wear No. 30, instead of No. 21 like he wore with Arkansas.
