51 days till Patriots season opener: Every player to wear No. 51 for New England

Here’s a list of every Patriots player to wear the No. 51 jersey number

The New England Patriots are officially 51 days away from their regular season opener, which means we’re continuing out countdown series by listing every player that has ever worn the No. 51 throughout franchise history.

Third-year linebacker Ronnie Perkins currently wears the number that has been draped across the jerseys of 24 total Patriots players in the past. Former All-Pro linebacker and current Patriots linebackers coach Jerod Mayo was one of those players.

The former first-round draft pick stepped in as one of the new-age players to take over roles previously held by defensive legends like Tedy Bruschi and Mike Vrabel. He helped kick-start the second half of the Patriots’ three Super Bowl victories in a 17-year span.

Barkevious Mingo’s lawyer criticizes Falcons for ‘rush to judgement’

Atlanta initially signed Mingo to a one-year deal back in March, which would have been the former first-round pick’s sixth team in six years.

The Atlanta Falcons wasted little time making the decision to part ways with linebacker Barkevious Mingo, who was charged with sexual misconduct with a child on Thursday for an incident that took place in July of 2019.

Since the allegations first came to light over the weekend, Mingo and his agent, Chris Lewis, have remained adamant that the claims are false and baseless. Lewis released statement, as shared by ESPN’s Adam Schefter on Twitter.

“We are extremely disappointed in the Atlanta Falcons’ rush to judgment in terminating Barkevious Mingo’s contract before gathering all of the relevant facts and prior to my client having his day in court,” said Lewis. “The accusation against Mr. Mingo is a lie. Barkevious knows it — so does his accuser.”

The Falcons gave their initial statement on the matter Saturday afternoon before releasing Mingo just a few hours later. Sports Illustrated reported on the graphic details of the case Saturday evening, and it’s easy to see why the team felt it had no choice but to release him.

Atlanta initially signed Mingo to a one-year deal back in March, which would have been the former first-round pick’s sixth team in six years. Mingo would have likely competed for a job at outside linebacker this season with the Falcons.

Falcons to sign former first-round pick LB Barkevious Mingo

The Falcons have signed free agent OLB Barkevious Mingo to a one-year deal, according to a report by NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport on Tuesday morning.

The Falcons have signed free agent OLB Barkevious Mingo to a one-year deal, according to a report by NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport on Tuesday morning. This comes just twenty minutes after agreeing to terms with running back Mike Davis on a two-year contract.

Both the linebacker and running back positions were extremely thin due to the team’s lack of salary cap space, which has caused Atlanta to take a conservative approach to free agency thus far.

Mingo, a top-10 pick of the Cleveland Browns back in 2013, never made the impact scouts predicted coming out of college, but the former LSU linebacker has lasted eight years in the NFL. Mingo played with the Chicago Bears in 2020, racking up 35 tackles (23 solo), 2.5 sacks, five QB hits and two passes defended.

As the Falcons alter their defense under defensive coordinator Dean Pees, the team is expected to run more 3-4 looks than in years past. Mingo gives Atlanta another EDGE to pair with Dante Fowler Jr., but should mostly be a depth signing.

Stay tuned for the terms of Mingo’s reported contract with the Falcons.
