Alabama football countdown to kickoff: 20 days

We are now just 20 days away from the start of Alabama football’s 2023 season!

The Alabama Crimson Tide will take the field for the 2023 college football season in 20 days, as Middle Tennessee State visits Bryant Denny Stadium on Sept. 2.

Here at Roll Tide Wire, we will be counting down the days until Nick Saban and his team take the field.

With 20 days remaining, we will take a look at a former standout at linebacker for the Tide, Shaun Dion Hamilton.

Hamilton played in Tuscaloosa from 2014-17 where he appeared in a total of 33 games and accumulated 134 tackles, 16 tackles for loss, 4.5 sacks, and two interceptions.

Redshirt freshman defensive back Earl Little II currently wears No. 20 and should play a significant role for the Crimson Tide in 2023.

Senior Bowl reveals the DBs that Lions coach Shaun Dion Hamilton will have in Mobile

Lions defensive assistant Shaun Dion Hamilton will have some promising CBs to work with as the DBs coach of the American team in the Senior Bowl

Lions defensive assistant coach Shaun Dion Hamilton is getting a great opportunity to showcase himself at next week’s Senior Bowl. Hamilton, who joined the Lions coaching staff after retiring last summer, is in charge of the defensive backs on the American team roster in Mobile.

The Senior Bowl has now revealed which players Hamilton will have under his charge for the week of practices and the game itself.

Hamilton doesn’t have any top names, but there are some talents here who should definitely intrigue both Lions fans and the team itself.

The first name on the list, Kansas State’s Julius Brents, fits the profile the Lions like in outside CBs. He’s 6-foot-4 (listed) and showed good ball skills for the Wildcats, as well as a willingness to get heavily involved in run defense. Virginia’s Anthony Johnson earned first-team All-ACC honors over some more prominent names and also has the length and physicality the Lions like.

Lions assistant coach Shaun Dion Hamilton chosen as a Senior Bowl coach

Hamilton will coach the DBs for one of the teams at the Senior Bowl

A year ago, Shaun Dion Hamilton was hitting the offseason trying to solidify his spot as a linebacker with the Detroit Lions. Now Hamilton is quickly climbing up the coaching ladder a year later.

Hamilton, who served as a defensive assistant coach during the 2022 season, was selected to coach the defensive backs for one of the teams at the Senior Bowl in early February. It’s a great opportunity for Hamilton to grow his burgeoning coaching career.

Lions fans barely saw Hamilton in uniform. Claimed off waivers from Washington in early 2021, the former Alabama linebacker injured his knee in preseason and missed that season. Hamilton struggled to find a role in 2022 training camp and his ongoing injury issues led him to retire. Head coach Dan Campbell quickly offered him a position on the coaching staff.

While he played linebacker, Hamilton was noted for his coverage skills, so taking charge of defensive backs is not a huge stretch.

The Senior Bowl opportunity is a fortunate one. Normally the Senior Bowl brings in an entire coaching staff of a non-playoff team; the Lions and Jets were the full staffs in the 2022 game week. This year, the Senior Bowl is giving higher-level coaching roles to various young assistants from across the league to help them advance their careers.

Shaun Dion Hamilton joins the Lions coaching staff

Hamilton was one of the first Lions cuts this summer and has decided to go into coaching

Shaun Dion Hamilton is back with the Detroit Lions, but he won’t be playing linebacker anymore. The veteran LB is joining the team’s coaching staff, according to Justin Rogers of the Detroit News.

Hamilton was one of the first wave of Lions roster cuts this summer, when the team shaved the roster from 90 to 85. The 26-year-old from Alabama didn’t get much interest from other NFL teams so he has opted to pursue a coaching career.

Hamilton first joined the Lions in 2021 as a free agent after starting his career with Washington. He was getting regular work with the first-team defense in training camp last season before suffering a season-ending injury.

There is no exact job title for Hamilton yet, but the team does not currently have an inside LBs coaching designation.

Former Alabama LB Shaun Dion Hamilton released by Lions

Shaun Dion Hamilton will look to join a new team before the start of the 2022 NFL regular season.

On Tuesday, the Detroit Lions announced that they had released former Alabama linebacker Shaun Dion Hamilton via Twitter. Hamilton spent one season with the Lions organization.

The product of Montgomery, Alabama spent four seasons at Alabama. During that time, he tallied 134 tackles, 16.0 tackles for loss and 4.5 sacks. Hamilton became a starter by his junior season along with Butkus Award winner Reuben Foster. He suffered two season-ending injuries with the Crimson Tide during his junior and senior seasons. Nonetheless. the Washington Commanders chose him in the 6th round of the 2018 NFL draft.

Hamilton went on to spend three seasons with the organization. He would record 97 tackles as well as seven tackles for loss. After the 2020 season, Hamilton signed with the Lions. However, he didn’t record any stats with the organization.

Now, the once hard-hitting Alabama linebacker will be looking to join a new team. If he does, it will be the third team that Hamilton has joined since entering the league in 2018.

Roll Tide Wire will continue to track Hamilton’s career as well as other former Alabama football players in the NFL.

Lions place Jameson Williams, 3 others on reserve get to 80-man roster limit

Williams and Romeo Okwara are among those who will miss at least the first 4 games of the regular season

Like all NFL teams, the Detroit Lions had a hard deadline of 4 p.m. ET on Tuesday, August 23 to get their active roster from 85 players down to 80. The Lions trimmed the roster to the 80-man maximum, though they did it without releasing five players.

To start the roster reduction, the Lions moved some players from the physically unable to perform (PUP) or non-football injury (NFI) lists from active status to reserve, an option that officially starts at Tuesday’s deadline. That means they no longer count against the roster limit but will be forced to miss the first four weeks of the regular season.

Rookie wide receiver Jameson Williams was placed on the reserve/NFI list as he continues to rehab from knee surgery over the winter. Defensive end Romeo Okwara, fullback Jason Cabinda and defensive end Josh Paschal were all moved to the reserve/PUP list.

After those injury-related moves, the Lions still had to make more space. Detroit did that by releasing LB Shaun Dion Hamilton.

10 Lions roster bubble players to watch vs. Colts

These are 10 Lions players who can really help–or hurt–themselves in the quest to make the final 53-man roster in the second preseason week.

After the first round of cuts, 85 players remain on the Detroit Lions as they enter the second week of preseason. The opportunities to impress are getting shorter with the week in Indianapolis for the Lions’ first road game of the exhibition season. For the players on the roster bubble, it’s rapidly approaching now-or-never time.

Saturday’s preseason game at Lucas Oil Field (1 p.m. ET) is the fiery crucible in which true winners are forged, but the coaching staff is also keenly watching the joint practices at the Colts training facility in Grant Park north of Indianapolis.

These are 10 Lions players who can really help–or hurt–themselves in the quest to make the final 53-man roster in the second preseason week.

Lions re-sign LB Alex Anzalone, 3 others

The Detroit Lions re-sign LB Alex Anzalone and 3 others on the brink of free agency

One of the Detroit Lions’ primary defensive starters from the 2021 season is coming back for another go-around. Linebacker Alex Anzalone has re-signed with the Lions prior to the onset of free agency.

The team announced the re-signing on Monday just before the legal tampering period for free agents begins. Anzalone was scheduled to be an unrestricted free agent. He started 14 games for the Lions in his first season in Detroit, coming to the team with head coach Dan Campbell and defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn from the New Orleans Saints.

Anzalone struggled early in the season but his play perked up once the Lions jettisoned LB Jamie Collins. The 27-year-old wore the green dot as the defensive playcaller.

The Lions also announced they officially re-signed safety C.J. Moore, safety Jalen Elliott and linebacker Shaun Dion Hamilton. Terms of the new deals are not yet known.

Lions injury tracker: All the players on injured reserve entering Week 6

The updated Detroit Lions injury tracker includes 8 players who would be starters currently on IR

It’s been a very rough season for the Detroit Lions. Winless through five weeks, the team has suffered through a nasty wave of injuries to key players. And the list keeps growing.

Last week’s sobering look at how many players are unavailable to the team due to either injury or dead cap has expanded, unfortunately. Pro Bowl center Frank Ragnow will miss the rest of the season with a toe injury that required surgery. He was out for Week 5 as well but now officially joins the throng of Lions on the IR list.

Here’s the updated cadre of Lions either on the IR or non-football injury reserved lists as of October 13th:

  • Taylor Decker, starting left tackle
  • Frank Ragnow, starting center
  • Tyrell Williams, starting wide receiver
  • Quintez Cephus, starting wide receiver (in place of Williams)
  • Tyrell Crosby, offensive tackle (would start in place of Decker)
  • Tim Boyle, backup quarterback
  • Romeo Okwara, starting outside linebacker
  • Jeff Okudah, starting cornerback
  • Ifeatu Melifonwu, starting CB (in place of Okudah)
  • Da’Shawn Hand, defensive end
  • Kevin Strong, defensive end
  • Joel Heath, defensive end
  • Shaun Dion Hamilton, linebacker
  • Charlie Taumopeau, tight end (NFI)
  • Hunter Bryant, tight end (NFI)

That’s eight different players who would be starting right now, six of them regular projected starters. The list includes the team’s two best offensive linemen, the top wideout, the No. 1 and No. 2 cornerbacks and the WR leader in receiving yards after five games.
