Dre Bly, John Fox among the coaches moving on from the Lions

Dre Bly, John Fox among the coaches moving on from the Lions after the 2023 season

In light of the official hiring of three new defensive coaches, the Detroit Lions also had to subtract a few coaches from the team.

A couple of the departures were already known. Defensive line coach John Scott was replaced during Senior Bowl week by new DL coach and run game coordinator Terrell Williams. DBs coach Brian Duker left for the Miami Dolphins last week.

One more positional coach has also been let go. Cornerbacks coach Dre Bly no longer appears on the team’s coaching roster. Like Scott, Bly was brought in from the college ranks for the 2023 season. His group didn’t show a lot of progress, and his departure is not exactly a surprise.

Defensive quality control coach Wayne Blair is also no longer with the team. His contract expired and was not renewed.

Two senior assistant coaches have also moved on. Former NFL head coach John Fox won’t be back in 2024 after one season as a defensive assistant. Longtime NFL coach Jim Hostler is also out after one year as a senior offensive assistant in Detroit.

Lions officially hire three new defensive coaches

The Lions officially added 3 new defensive coaches to the den on Wednesday

The Detroit Lions filled out their 2024 coaching staff by hiring three new additions.

Deshea Townsend and Terrell Williams were already known to be joining the team. Townsend takes over as the defensive backs coach and defensive passing game coordinator for the Lions. He spent the last two seasons in those same roles for the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Williams was hired back in January, but the move to appoint him as the new defensive line coach and defensive run game coordinator is now officially recognized. The longtime DL coach was previously with the Tennessee Titans. He was once Lions GM Brad Holmes’ position coach in the college ranks.

The third hire is one that hadn’t been previously revealed. Jim O’Neil joins the Lions as a defensive assistant. O’Neil has been in the coaching ranks at a number of stops since 2001 and was most recently the defensive coordinator at Northwestern. He’s primarily worked with defensive backs but did spend two seasons as the defensive coordinator for the Cleveland Browns.

The Lions finalized their 2023 coaching staff and announced 3 new official additions to Dan Campbell’s staff

The Detroit Lions announced via press release their full coaching staff for the 2023 NFL season. The team made official the reported signings of three new coaches in the process.

Report: Lions adding John Fox as a senior defensive consultant

A report from ESPN indicates the Lions are adding longtime NFL head coach John Fox as a senior defensive consultant

One of the early developments coming out of the 2023 NFL Scouting Combine in relation to the Detroit Lions has nothing to do with the draft. A report from David Newton of ESPN indicates the Lions are adding a veteran NFL head coach in a consulting capacity.

Per Newton, former head coach John Fox will join the Lions as a senior defensive consultant. It’s a role the Lions have not had filled since Dom Capers held that title in the 2021 season.

Fox has 16 years of NFL head coaching experience with three teams, last with the Bears in 2015-2017. The 68-year-old Fox held the senior defensive consultant role for the Indianapolis Colts in 2022, his first NFL venture since leaving the Bears.

Assistant head coach Scottie Montgomery will remain with the Lions

Montgomery interviewed to be the new OC in Tampa Bay but the Bucs hired Dave Canales of the Seahawks instead

New Lions assistant head coach and running backs coach Scottie Montgomery will not be leaving the Lions to join the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Montgomery, hired by the Lions a little over a week ago, interviewed for the offensive coordinator vacancy in Tampa Bay just days after being hired by the Lions. Montgomery was previously the RB coach for the Indianapolis Colts and has prior coordinator and head coaching experience at the collegiate level.

The Buccaneers opted to hire Dave Canales from the Seattle Seahawks to become their new offensive coordinator.

There are still some openings around the league as teams finalize their staffs, but Montgomery is not known to be a candidate for any other opening.

Lions hire Scottie Montgomery as new RBs coach and assistant head coach

Montgomery has been the RBs coach for the Colts and has prior head coaching experience

The Detroit Lions have hired Scottie Montgomery to be the team’s new assistant head coach and running backs coach.

Montogmery comes to the Lions from the Indianapolis Colts, where he had been the RB coach for the last two seasons. Montgomery has a broader coaching history that includes a stint as the head coach at Duke University and with several teams as a wide receivers coach. He was a wide receiver for some NFL teams in the early 2000s.

Montgomery replaces Duce Staley, who held both titles under head coach Dan Campbell in 2021-2022. Staley left to join the new coaching staff with the Carolina Panthers.

During his time with the Colts, Montgomery helped develop Jonathan Taylor into the NFL’s leading rusher in 2021.

Shaun Dion Hamilton joins the Lions coaching staff

Hamilton was one of the first Lions cuts this summer and has decided to go into coaching

Shaun Dion Hamilton is back with the Detroit Lions, but he won’t be playing linebacker anymore. The veteran LB is joining the team’s coaching staff, according to Justin Rogers of the Detroit News.

Hamilton was one of the first wave of Lions roster cuts this summer, when the team shaved the roster from 90 to 85. The 26-year-old from Alabama didn’t get much interest from other NFL teams so he has opted to pursue a coaching career.

Hamilton first joined the Lions in 2021 as a free agent after starting his career with Washington. He was getting regular work with the first-team defense in training camp last season before suffering a season-ending injury.

There is no exact job title for Hamilton yet, but the team does not currently have an inside LBs coaching designation.

Lions passing game coordinator Tanner Engstrand offers a telling quote on the new philosophy in Detroit

Lions passing game coordinator Tanner Engstrand offers a telling quote on the new coaching philosophy in Detroit

These are not Matt Patricia’s Detroit Lions anymore. And a great, insightful quote from one of the few coaching holdovers from Patricia’s regime into the Dan Campbell era illustrates why the sordid past is dead.

Lions passing game coordinator and tight ends coach Tanner Engstrand met with the media during OTAs earlier this week. Engstrand was an offensive assistant for the team in 2020, Patricia’s final year. He carried over when Campbell believed enough in his ability to keep him in Detroit.

It’s easy to see why. This answer Engstrand provided when asked about what his role with the Lions entails is straight out of Dan Campbell Philosophy 101.

Engstrand’s final line here is the critical point,

“Finding what the guys do best and really trying to focus in on those types of things.”

Sounds pretty self-obvious and simple, right? Yet it is not something that every coaching staff embraces or even acknowledges. Think back to 2018-2020 in Detroit, where the coaching staff had to have players who fit very precise roles they predetermined. Even very skilled veterans who didn’t fit that precast mold (think Darius Slay, Golden Tate, Quandre Diggs) weren’t given the leverage to play to their personal strengths.

As Engstrand carefully pointed out, that’s the antithesis of the Dan Campbell philosophy. It’s something new offensive coordinator Ben Johnson has talked about extensively in his offseason work with quarterback Jared Goff, too.

“One thing that we’ve done is included him a lot in what we’re trying to do schematically, and so we spent some time this offseason watching more of the stuff he did a few years ago in LA and how we can incorporate some of that, while also challenging him to take the next step in some areas of improvement for him as a player as well,” Johnson said during the Lions recent minicamp.

Imagine the audacity of seeking out reasons to play to the strengths of the players who proved good enough to make the NFL!

In all seriousness, this is where Campbell’s years as a player are a major asset. Most of his assistants played in the NFL too, though Engstrand–a college QB at San Diego State–is not one of them. The ex-players understand the dynamics of talent diversity and individuality, something Campbell clearly stresses in his coaching style.

Campbell loves to use the phrase “cut from the same cloth” when talking about his relationship with GM Brad Holmes but also in what he looks for in both players and assistant coaches. Engstrand might have predated Campbell in Detroit but it’s clear the same seamstress wove his coaching philosophy.

Lions hire Cameron Davis as the new assistant defensive line coach

The Lions have hired a new defensive assistant coach

The Detroit Lions have filled what appears to be the final vacancy on the team’s coaching staff. On Saturday, the Lions hired Cameron Davis to be the new assistant defensive line coach.

Davis was most recently the defensive line coach at Lamar University in Texas. He has also coached on the defensive line at Texas A&M, Rice and Kentucky.

The Lions didn’t technically employ an assistant DL coach in 2021. Todd Wash remains as Detroit’s defensive line coach. The Lions used unspecified defensive assistants Brian Duker and Stephen Thomas in a variety of roles across the defense.
