Boston Celtics alum Shane Larkin has quiet game in Turkey’s 78-63 win over Belgium

The Miami product put up just 3 points, 4 boards, 6 assists, and 2 steals in over 30 minutes of play.

Despite a quiet night on offense from former Boston Celtics floor general Shane Larkin, his Turkish National Team managed to defeat the Belgian National Team on Tuesday morning, the Miami product finding other ways to help his team to a 78-63 win over Belgium in Group A EuroBasket play.

The Celtics alumnus put up and made just one 2-point field goal attempt in the contest despite playing for just over 32 minutes of game time, and got to the free throw line once, splitting his attempts for a total of just 3 points in the victory for Turkey. Larkin instead focused on being more of a pure point guard in this game with a total of 6 assists, perhaps out of concern with his rough shooting contest in Turkey’s loss to Georgia on Sunday.

The Cincinnati native also had 4 rebounds and 2 steals to go with as many turnovers and no personal fouls.

Boston alum Shane Larkin has off night as his Turkey falls to Georgia 88-83 in double overtime

The former Celtics reserve floor general had trouble shooting the ball in EuroBasket play Sunday, and it cost Turkey the game.

Former Boston Celtics floor general Shane Larkin had an egregiously bad shooting day while manning the point for the Turkish National Team on Sunday afternoon. Turkey fell 88-83 to the Georgian National Team in double overtime in part due to the former Miami player’s difficulties putting the proverbial biscuit in the basket.

Larkin put up 9 points, 8 boards, 7 assists and a steal in a game that seemed like nothing was going right for the former Boston point guard. While he did not pick up any personal fouls in the painful loss marred by a fight between teammate Furkan Korkmaz and three Georgian players, Larkin shot 2-of-14 from the field overall and 2-of-10 from 3-point range.

The former Celtic was on the floor for 48:54 of 50 possible minutes of the double-overtime affair.

Trio of Boston Celtics among HoopsHype’s best NBA players at EuroBasket

There is no shortage of Boston Celtics alumni among those NBAers taking part in FIBA play around the globe.

While you can’t see NBA basketball early in the month of September all too often outside of the random pandemic-interrupted season, you can see NBA basketball players playing ball, most of which happen to be taking part of late in FIBA competitions like the EuroBasket and AmeriCup competitions.

They are, of course, among if not always the best players on their respective National Teams, and there is no shortage of Boston Celtics alumni among those NBAers taking part in FIBA play around the globe. And according to a recent assessment done by the folks over at HoopsHype, there are a handful of Celtics alumni among the best NBA players at the EuroBasket.

Let’s take a look at which alumni they are — and where they rate in H/H’s estimation.

Celtics alum Shane Larkin gets 13 points, 9 assists for Turkey in 101-87 EuroBasket win over Bulgaria

EuroLeague star and Celtics alum Shane Larkin continues to shine abroad.

Former Boston Celtics floor general Shane Larkin helped lift his Turkish National Team to a 101-87 win over the Bulgarian National Team on Saturday in another solid victory for Turkey in Group A of EuroBasket play despite a slow start in the first half.

The Miami product put up 13 points, 3 rebounds, 9 assists, and a steal in 28:35 minutes of floor time, turning the ball over just once, and committing two personal fouls. The Celtics alumnus had a bit of a rough night shooting the ball, going just 2-of-8 from the field overall, 1-of-6 from 3-point range, and a perfect 8-of-8 from the charity stripe to help make up for his yips from elsewhere on the court.

“I didn’t shoot the ball well tonight,” said Larkin in an interview with Eurohoops after the game. “So, I just tried to start attacking more in the second half.”

The EuroLeague star helped fend off an upset loss in Day 1 of EuroBasket play.

Former Boston Celtics floor general Shane Larkin helped his Turkish National Team fend off a near upset by the Montenegrin National Team 72-68 in EuroBasket play on Thursday, the Miami Product equaling Montenegro’s Bojan Dubljevic for the tilt’s highest-scoring game at 18 points each.

The former Celtics point guard also put up 7 assists and 2 steals in 31:29 minutes of floor time, turning the ball over twice and fouling once. Larkin shot a sizzling 6-of-7 from the field overall, 5-of-6 from beyond the arc for the bulk of his scoring, and 1-of-2 from the free-throw line in the win for Turkey.

12 Boston Celtics alumni participating in 2022 EuroBasket

The EuroBasket is back with one current Celtics player and 11 alumni.

A number of alumni from the Boston Celtics are planning to play in the 2022 EuroBasket competition, the first in five years due to the pandemic. Currently slated to start in two weeks with 34 total NBA players on 17 different teams, the EuroBasket competition — in full, the European Basketball Championship — normally takes place every four years with up to 24 teams participating.

Historically, it had previously run every two years, but now has switched to a similar model as the FIBA World Cup, and the last was held in 2017 before the pandemic, with conditions in 2021 deemed too fraught to hold the competition. But now the EuroBasket is back with one current Celtics player and 11 alumni.

Let’s take a look at them all.

Celtics alum Shane Larkin signs 2-season extension with Turkish EuroLeague champs Efes

Larkin will have a clause to return to the NBA if he chooses, but given the success he is having abroad, we do not expect him to use it.

While there were a fair amount of reunions on the Boston Celtics this year with a number of familiar faces from Al Horford and Daniel Theis all the way back to Joe Johnson making appearances in green and white to play for Boston in the 2021-22 season.

But while it would not be impossible thanks to a clause in a new extension (first reported by Ismail Senol of beIN SPORTS) that would allow him to return to the NBA, Celtics alumnus Shane Larkin is not very likely to make use of that clause given how well he’s been doing with his current team, Anadolu Efes Istanbul. Efes — as they are called for short — has won the last two EuroLeague titles with Larkin as their primary star, the Miami product enjoying a level of stardom unlikely to become available to him in the NBA.

Larkin’s extension will keep him employed by Efes until the end of the 2023-24 season assuming the 29-year-old floor general does not elect to exercise the termination clause that would let him make the leap back to the Association.

A former Celtics guard is a now a EuroLeague champion

Former Celtic Shane Larkin wins the EuroLeague

An incredible three-year run in Europe has resulted in the most coveted basketball championship outside of the NBA for former Celtics guard Shane Larkin. His Turkish squad Anadolu Efes took home the EuroLeague championship yesterday with an 86-81 comeback win over Barcelona.

Larkin starred as he has for the past three years in Turkey, scoring 21 points while dishing out 3 assists in the deciding victory. The former Celtic defeated a number of former NBA players on Barcelona including Pau Gasol, Nikola Mirotic, and Nick Calathes. For Larkin, it was the culmination of a three-year journey after losing in the EuroLeague championship game in 2018-19 despite an incredible individual performance, having a promising year cut short due to COVID-19, and then ultimately coming out on top in 2020-2021.

Larkin spent five seasons in the NBA, with his most recent stint coming in 2017-2018 for the Boston Celtics.

Ex-Nets guard turned star overseas nearly returned to NBA this summer

Shane Larkin hasn’t played in the NBA since 2018, but he’s still playing basketball — and has done quite well for himself in the process.

It’s been a while since Shane Larkin had a home in the NBA — but that almost changed quite recently.

The guard got a taste of international basketball in 2016-17, after his lone season with the Brooklyn Nets, then returned to the NBA for 2017-18 to play for the Celtics. Since his year in Boston, Larkin has been back overseas, playing for Anadolu Efes in the EuroLeague.

After averaging 13.5 points on 47.8% shooting (41.4% from deep), 3.7 assists and 1.1 steals per game in his first season with the professional Turkish team, Larkin shot 45.4% from deep (50.6% overall) while averaging 18.7 points, 4/0 assists and 1.3 steals per game in 2019-20.

And the guard’s impressive run nearly earned him a return to the NBA, as he explained to Bugra Uzar of EuroHoops:

I would say that’s the goal. I’d say that’s definitely the goal. To win a [EuroLeague] championship with Efes is definitely what I want to do and what I want to accomplish. But I am from America and the NBA is the NBA and it’s always the goal as mine as well. So I would not say that you can completely rule out the NBA. I definitely had some great offers from the NBA this summer but ended up not working out.

On this day: KG dealt to Boston; Larkin, Collins signed; Pruitt waived

On this day in 2007, the Boston Celtics traded Al Jefferson, Ryan Gomes, Sebastian Telfair, Gerald Green, Theo Ratliff, cash and draft considerations for Kevin Garnett.

On this day in 2007, the Boston Celtics traded for Minnesota Timberwolves star big man Kevin Garnett.

The Big Ticket had initially been reluctant to agree to sign an extension with the Celtics should they deal for him given the dearth of high-level talent on the roster save for forward Paul Pierce, but a move that brought sharpshooting UConn product Ray Allen on board earlier that summer was tantalizing enough for Garnett to seal the deal.

KG agreed to sign a three-year extension to add to the two remaining seasons on his existing contract, and the deal was consummated soon after.

The South Carolinian was dealt  for Al Jefferson, Ryan Gomes, Sebastian Telfair, Gerald Green, Theo Ratliff, cash and draft considerations.

Garnett would win a title with the team in 2008, be elected Defensive Player of the Year that season, make five All-Star games, and earn many more such honors during his six seasons with the team.
