Twitter Takeaways from Iowa’s gritty road victory at Seton Hall

Twitter reacted to Kris Murray’s career high and the Hawkeyes’ big win as Iowa took care of Seton Hall, 83-67, in the Gavitt Tipoff Games.

How about that for a big road victory!

Just three games into the season, Iowa has defeated a solidly notable opponent in the Big East’s Seton Hall. They were dominant defensively, really throwing their opponents off of their game despite being on the road.

The Pirates shot under 36% from the field, and had double the turnovers (16) as Iowa. For most of the first half, Seton Hall looked absolutely unable to score. That really aided an Iowa offense that struggled a bit early on to score as well.

Thankfully, they did pick it up on the back of a Kris Murray 29 point performance. That matched Murray’s career high as he finished 10-of-20 from the floor and drained a trio of 3-pointers.

They don’t look like they are in midseason form yet, but Iowa showed a ton of exciting things against Seton Hall. There was excitement about their defensive potential heading into the season, and they locked down tonight. Filip Rebraca in particular was a force on the interior, Tony Perkins pestering the Pirates as well.

It is a win that can prove to be big come the end of the season, and here are the top social media reactions.

Can Rutgers women’s basketball team crack Top 25?

After a nice 73-68 victory over Hofstra University last night, are fans slowly starting to hope that this season is a bounce-back year for the Rutgers women’s basketball team? Can head coach Coquese Washington return the Scarlet Knights to their once powerhouse form?

After a nice 73-68 victory over Hofstra University last night, are fans slowly starting to hope that this season is a bounce-back year for the Rutgers women’s basketball program? Can this team begin to stack wins in not just out-of-conference play but in a deep Big Ten?

Granted it is only one victory but getting off on the right foot is an excellent confidence booster. The next test for the Scarlet Knights will be this Friday night, November 11, 2022, against the Seton Hall Pirates. The last time the two local New Jersey universities faced off was back in December 2017, when the Scarlet Knights defeated the Pirates 70-45. The Pirates are going to give the Scarlet Knights more of a challenge than Hofstra, especially since Hofstra hasn’t had a winning season in the last six years.

After the retirement of legendary head coach C. Vivian Stringer, the Rutgers women’s basketball program was left wondering. Wondering if the once-successful program can return to the top. With the victory over Hofstra, the women Scarlet Knights ushered newly head coach Coquese Washington to the win column.

Can Washington return the Scarlet Knights to their once powerhouse form? Watching the game last night, it was nice to see the Scarlet Knights put up points, something they lacked all last season.

Hopefully, Washington can carry on Stringer’s defensive mindset, something she implemented in her program for many years. In the years leading up to Stringer’s retirement, Rutgers had issues scoring, but would win games because of their strong defense. Stringer always made a case that a strong defense is a good offense, but nowadays that doesn’t work, since many teams have elite scoring. If Washington can get her girls to play tough defense and continue to run an efficient offensive scheme, Rutgers can make a tremendous improvement from last season, possibly cracking the NCAA Women’s Basketball top 25 rankings.

Iowa Hawkeyes ranked No. 21 in 247Sports’ preseason college basketball rankings

It’s almost time to tip off the 2022-23 men’s college basketball season. According to 247Sports, Iowa starts as the nation’s No. 21 team.

You can tell a season is right around the corner when the market becomes flooded with preseason rankings. Everyone loves a good set of rankings, especially as they try to get a gauge on teams before they step on the court. Nothing boosts your self worth quite like correctly predicting who the top teams will be in advance!

247Sports’ Kevin Flaherty and Isaac Trotter recently took their hand at predicting the field, releasing their college basketball preseason rankings. Coming in as the 21st ranked team in the country is the reigning Big Ten Tournament champion in Iowa.

This could be one of Fran McCaffery’s better defensive teams, and if Kris Murray makes the expected leap to All-Big Ten caliber player, the scoring will be there as well. Patrick McCaffery, Tony Perkins and Payton Sandfort can all put the ball in the basket. – 247Sports.

Iowa is one of only three Big Ten schools featured on the list, Illinois ranked 15th with Indiana a place behind.

The Associated Press also only ranked three Big Ten teams in their initial top 25, notably leaving Iowa on the outside looking in. According to the AP voters, Indiana is the highest-ranked Big Ten team at No. 13, followed by No. 22 Michigan and No. 23 Illinois.

It will once again be a tough competition for the conference crown, but it seems the national media is not expecting a national champion to come from the Big Ten this season.

There is a lot of projection in regards to Iowa this upcoming season, making it understandable why they are a bubble top-25 team heading into the season. Of course, the notable departure is All-American forward Keegan Murray. The fourth overall pick by the Sacramento Kings, Murray would’ve been a National Player of the Year most other seasons.

A lot of pundits are projecting twin brother Kris Murray to fill his brother’s shoes as the star of the team, but, of course, that is still just a projection for now. Murray is following a similar career arc to his brother Keegan, performing really well when given a chance at extended playing time last season. We will have to see if he can handle the limelight as the true No. 1 option for Iowa head men’s basketball coach Fran McCaffery.

The other biggest projection, as Kevin Flaherty breaks down for Hawkeye Insider and 247Sports, is the team’s defense.

Fran McCaffery’s bunch lost All-American Keegan Murray, who likely would have been National Player of the Year in a number of other seasons. But he brings back an experienced roster from a team that appeared to figure things out defensively as the season went on, something that could make this 2022-23 bunch better than its predecessors.

Iowa has not had a top 70 defense in KenPom’s adjusted defensive efficiency since the 2015-16 season, and if the Hawkeyes can find a way to keep the offensive train rolling while buffing up on the defensive end, Iowa could compete for a Big Ten title. Iowa certainly appears to boast plenty of firepower. – Flaherty, 247Sports.

That progression on the defensive side of the court is probably the biggest key for Iowa in 2022. While the team loses Keegan Murray, they still return a lot of experienced players who can put the ball in the hoop. Fourth-year forward Patrick McCaffery averaged a hair over 10 points per game last year, and is getting some breakout buzz in his own right ahead of the season.

Payton Sandfort showed a lot of scoring potential off the bench last year, especially as a shooter hitting 36% of his 3-point attempts. You can go down the roster list and find potential breakout candidates: Kris Murray, Patrick McCaffery, Dasonte Bowen, etcetera.

There are a lot of things to be excited about with this team, but a ton to prove as well. They’ll have plenty of opportunities to show why they’re a top team right away, with Seton Hall, Clemson, and Duke scheduled early in the season.

Florida strikes out 11 times to give Seton Hall first win of 2022

Florida baseball struck out 11 times in a loss to the winless Seton Hall Pirates. Y I K E S.

Every time Florida baseball found a way to cut into Seton Hall’s three-run lead the Pirates answered, stifling the No. 11 Gators’ attempts to seize the series sweep and shocking the Orange and Blue Sunday at Florida Ballpark, 6-4, to earn its first win of the season.

Florida pitcher Nick Pogue made his first start since March of 2020 after undergoing a season-ending UCL injury and it was clear he still has plenty of rust on his arm. The redshirt sophomore lasted only 1 2/3 innings and gave up three hits, three walks and a run before Sullivan called on Timmy Manning to take over. Unfortunately, he didn’t fare much better as he surrendered two more runs to widen the gap between the Gators and the Pirates.

Seton Hall started pitcher Brennan O’Neill dazzled in his five innings of work, striking out nine while allowing only four hits, a walk and three earned runs. The Pirates entering Sunday’s contest had an inflated team ERA of 11.

However, it was all Seton Hall early as it grabbed a 3-0 lead.

Florida ate into the Pirates’ lead in the fourth inning. Left fielder Wyatt Langford smacked his fifth home run of the season to trim Florida’s deficit to 3-1.

But Seton Hall answered quickly and manufactured a run to increase its lead back to three.

An inning later, the Gators cut into the Pirates’ lead again. Center fielder Jud Fabian scored on a wild pitch after a walk to start the inning. First baseman Kendrick Calilao then drove in second baseman Sterlin Thompson with a sacrifice fly.

But just like earlier in the game, Seton Hall found a way to answer a half-inning later. It recorded three straight singles to push across another run before third baseman Deric Fabian committed his first error of the season,  allowing a second run to cross the plate in the seventh, making it a 6-3 game.

Florida staged one last rally in the bottom of the ninth, pushing across one run and bringing tying run in Thompson come to the plate with two outs. But The Gators’ second baseman grounded out to second for the final out.

Seton Hall muffled Sullivan’s bats, where his team only recorded seven hits and four runs while striking out 11 times.

The Gators will return to Florida Ballpark to face No. 8 Florida State on Tuesday at 6 p.m. EDT. The game will be broadcast on the SEC Network+.

Jud Fabian smashes homers in back-to-back wins over Seton Hall Pirates

Florida’s offense exploded for 16 and 11 runs in its two victories against Seton Hall on Saturday.

Seton Hall entered its series versus No. 11 Florida allowing opponents to outscore it 101-16. The Gators as well as center fielder Jud Fabian were aware of those statistics and took full advantage of the Pirates’ struggles during their double-header at Florida Ballpark.

On Saturday after Friday night’s rainout, Fabian blasted home runs in back-to-back games as his team took the opening tilt, 16-4, and survived a late Pirates rally to win 11-9 to grab the series heading into the final matchup Sunday.

Right fielder Sterlin Thompson and left fielder Wyatt Langford hit back-to-back triples to score the Gators’ first run to kick off the scoring in the first inning of the first game.

Third baseman Deric Fabian walked to start the third inning and then Jud blasted a shot to the right-field bullpen to increase Florida’s lead to 3-0.

In the fifth, Thompson singled in two more runs with the bases juiced. Langford came up next and smashed a three-run homer to left field to increase the Gators’ advantage to 8-0. Florida added eight more runs, and Seton Hall tacked on four once each team emptied their bench to get to the final score of 16-4.

Ace Hunter Barco returned to his dominating form after a bumpy start last time out versus Miami. He pitched a gem, allowing only two hits, one free pass and no runs in 6 1/3 innings.

The Pirates used two singles and a triple in the first inning to grab a 2-0 lead to strike first in the second game. Seton Hall added another one in the third before the Gators then earned it back in the bottom half via a bases-loaded walk from designated Kris Armstrong.

Florida passed the bat around in the bottom of the third, scoring four runs on two walks, a wild pitch and an RBI single to reclaim the lead, 5-3.

The Gators recorded another big inning in the fifth. Armstrong doubled to start and then right fielder Corey Robinson reached via a hit by a pitch. Deric singled in Armstrong and Robinson after they advanced via a sacrifice bunt. Jud then went big fly to right field just like he did in the first game to drive in his little brother to increase Florida’s lead to 9-3.

Brandon Sproat took the bump for the second game against the Pirates. He provided a solid outing, surrendering six hits, three earned runs and a walk in six innings.

Sullivan’s team added two more runs in the later innings to get to 11-3 heading into the ninth. Seton Hall gave Florida a scare when it hit a grand slam after giving up two runs to decrease the Gators’ lead to 11-9 with two outs remaining. Reliever Brandon Neely entered for Florida immediately following the monster home run and shut down the Pirates’ comeback.

The Gators and Seton Hall return Sunday to Florida Ballpark at noon EDT for the series finale.

Series preview: Florida looks to keep its win streak going vs Seton Hall

Take a look at what’s on tap at Florida Ballpark this weekend… if the rain doesn’t spoil things.

After Florida baseball’s second midweek game versus Jacksonville University was postponed due to weather, the No. 14 Gators return to Florida Ballpark to host the Seton Hall Pirates. Coach Kevin O’Sullivan’s team enters this weekend’s series on a three-game winning streak and will look to keep it going.

Unfortunately, the weather hasn’t improved in Gainesville since Wednesday. As of publishing, Sunday looks like the best day for some baseball because no rain is projected in the forecast. There is a 100% chance of rain on Friday and Saturday.

Florida only managed to produce one run in its win versus the Dolphins on Tuesday. The Gators bats’ will need to step it up if they want to take the series versus Seton Hall. While the lineup struggled, second baseman Colby Halter still grabbed a single to extend his hitting streak to 16 games. Then as a team, Florida sits third in the country with 27 dingers.

Sullivan’s pitching staff has also done well against the long ball while only allowing five. Ace Hunter Barco and Brandon Sproat will earn the starts on Friday and Saturday respectively and then Florida will call on Nick Pogue to toe the rubber first Sunday. It’ll be his first appearance in two years after season-ending surgery in 2021. Sullivan told reporters he’ll be on a tight pitch count and that Timmy Manning will likely get some run after him on Sunday.

Seton Hall sits currently winless on the season, but its schedule hasn’t been easy, either. It was swept by North Carolina in its opening series and followed that up with a midweek contest against the Wolverines.

Ohio State basketball knocks off Seton Hall in a thriller

A character-building win for Ohio State! #GoBucks

OK football fans, don’t forget that the Ohio State basketball team is playing some hoops while the whole world seems to be getting lathered up for “The Game” on the gridiron this weekend between the Buckeyes and Michigan Wolverines.

In fact, the basketball Bucks are down in Southwest Florida trying to win a little tournament known as the Fort Myers Tip-off, and the competition is pretty stiff. In fact, the first game was against a No. 21 ranked Seton Hall team that just finished taking down TTUN on the court themselves.

The game was one worthy of March.

After a pretty even first 10 minutes or so, Ohio State took control of the game in the latter part of the first half and for most of the rest of the game. However, the Pirates stayed in reach thanks in large part to the guard play of Jared Rhoden and Bryce Aiken who combined for 44 of Hall’s 76 points.

And with the sands of the hourglass sifting away, the Buckeyes found themselves tied at 76-76, with the basketball and a chance to take the last shot. This time, unlike many times last year, OSU hit the money ball when Meechie Johnson, Jr., nailed a deep three-pointer to win the game 79-76 with just 1.8 seconds left. After a desperation heave fell short for Seton Hall, it was time for a scarlet and gray celebration.

For Ohio State, it was a much-needed win. The Buckeyes have looked like a team trying to find themselves early on, including a loss to Xavier last time out. To beat a Seton Hall team that’s playing really well in a tournament atmosphere is just what the doctor ordered.

Once again, the Buckeyes were paced by E.J. Liddell who threw in another 28 points to lead OSU in scoring. He also had three blocks and six rebounds to fill up the box score. Justin Ahrens and Kyle Young also landed in double figures with 17 and 12 points respectively.

With the win, Ohio State advances to the final of the Beach Division and will take on the winner of Florida and California. The game is set for 8:30 p.m. EST on FS1.

The Pirates are 3-0 and coming off a 67-65 upset win over No. 4 Michigan. Seton Hall had balanced scoring and shot well from the three-point line to shock the Wolverines.

The Buckeyes look to get back to their winning ways as they head to the Sunshine State for the showdown.

Ohio State basketball’s opponent announced for Fort Myers Tip-off

How excited are you for this matchup? Does it move the needle for you?

We now know the matchup for Ohio State in the upcoming Fort Myers tip-off this coming basketball season. It was previously announced that the Buckeyes, Florida, Cal, and Seton Hall would be the four teams in the event, but weren’t given any indication on which teams would face each other.

Until now.

According to the Fort Myers Tip-off’s website, Ohio State will matchup with the Seton Hall Pirates, leaving Cal and the Florida Gators to face each other in the other game within the Beach division, both on Nov. 22. The winners of those two games will then face each other in the championship game in primetime on Nov. 24.

There is also a Palms division that includes Southern Utah, Yale, Milwaukee, and Bowling Green. That is a separate bracket that will crown a separate champion. Ohio State will not play any of those four.

Official game times will be announced at a later date.

Ohio State has had some success against Seton Hall in the past. The two programs have matched up five times in the past with the Buckeyes winning three of them. OSU won in 1960, 1995, and 2002 and lost against the Pirates in 1992, and most recently in 2003 by a score of 75-59.
