WATCH: Florida’s Tyree Appleby sinks a game-winner all of Gator Nation can be thankful for

No, it wasn’t a dream. Tyree Appleby nailed a deep three Wednesday night as time expired to put Florida over Ohio State.

No, it wasn’t a dream. Florida guard Tyree Appleby nailed a deep three-pointer as time expired against Ohio State Wednesday night to complete a 10-point Gators comeback and win the Fort Myers Tip-Off tournament.

There are many takeaways from the victory, but the most obvious is that Appleby has ice in his veins. Head coach Mike White described his senior guard as a “gutsy guy” after the game and said that Appleby is the kind of player that will make that kind of high-pressure shot. Appleby was only 1-for-9 shooting on the day before he heaved the prayer up with no time left in regulation.

“It was like a movie,” Appleby said. “Once I hit the shot, I felt my teammates right there with me. Probably one of the best moments of my college career, really my life.”

The game-winner (and the basketball team’s play overall this season) gives Gator Nation something to be thankful for as a nightmare of a football season draws to a close. If you missed it, here are the best looks at “the shot” from Wednesday night.

Ohio State basketball drops sloppy heartbreaker to Florida

Welp. That wasn’t fun.

After winning a game on a last-second 3-pointer, Ohio State was on the other end of that on Wednesday night against Florida, dropping the final of the Fort Meyers Tip-Off by a score of 67-70.

The heroics on this night came from Gators’ guard Tyree Applebee, who sunk a long 3-pointer as time expired to send a large Buckeye contingent that made the trip to Fort Myers home unhappy.

To be fair, it’s amazing the Buckeyes were in the game in the first place. Ohio State actually led for most of the game, but had one whale of a time taking care of the ball. OSU turned the ball over a whopping eighteen times resulting in numerous scoring chances and conversions going the other way.

Rebounding and fouling was also a problem. The Buckeyes got beat on the boards 35-33, but 16 of those were the offensive variety for the Gators. Add that to 24 fouls that sent Florida players to the line 33 times, and there were just a lot more scoring chances for the Gators than what the Buckeyes earned. It’s simply not winning basketball, I don’t care who you play.

E.J. Liddell led Ohio State in scoring once again, totaling 23 points on 7-of-11 shooting. Kyle Young also finished in double figures with 11 points but fouled out of the contest with 9:03 to play in a physical and challenging game to officiate.

With the loss, Ohio State drops to 4-2 on the young season and will have to find some way to move forward and try to keep improving. The season depends on it with such a challenging schedule.

3 takeaways as Florida stuns Ohio State on a buzzer-beater to win Fort Myers Tip-Off

Tyree Appleby stunned Ohio State with a buzzer-beater that earned the Gators a win despite their sloppy play.

Florida looked dead in the water in the second half of the Fort Myers Tip-Off final against Ohio State. It trailed by 10 at one point, and though it managed to chip away at that lead, it couldn’t take control.

UF struggled with shooting the entire game, and Ohio State couldn’t miss in the second half. But free throws gave the Gators a chance in the final minutes, and tight defense when it mattered gave the team the ball on the final possession in a game that was tied at 68.

Coach Mike White elected not to call a timeout, a questionable decision that ultimately paid off. Guard Tyree Appleby drove down the court and pulled up for a long three that fell through the net as the buzzer sounded.

Despite only leading for 3:23 of game time, the Gators earned a 71-68 win to preserve their undefeated start to the season and capture the championship in the Fort Myers tournament. Here are the takeaways.

Previewing Florida’s championship matchup against Ohio State at the Fort Myers Tip-Off

Florida basketball has started off hot this year, but now the Gators need to get by Ohio State.

Florida cruised through the opening round of the Fort Myers Tip-Off on Monday with an 80-60 win over Cal. The Gators will face Ohio State for the tournament championship on Wednesday after the Buckeyes beat No. 21 Seton Hall.

A strong first half put Florida out in front of Cal early, and the Gators never looked back. Starters were able to get valuable rest in the second half once the win was secure, so they should be fresh for the championship game. The Buckeyes played a much closer game, which could help swing momentum in their favor if attrition doesn’t become a factor.

Ohio State is without one of its stars, Justice Sueing, but that’s allowed them to work in some size. Colin Castleton has been leading the Gators in scoring and rebounding this year, so the size should help the Buckeyes handle Florida’s best. Castleton also played against a lot of the upperclassmen at Ohio State earlier in his career while at Michigan. He’s been a completely different player at Florida, but having some knowledge of his strengths and weaknesses is bound to help the opposition.

A win would mean a 5-0 start for Florida before Thanksgiving and likely a boost in the polls as well. This is only the second time the Gators will face Ohio State under Mike White. He led Florida to a win in the NIT during his first year as coach in 2016.

Ohio State basketball’s opponent announced for Fort Myers Tip-off

How excited are you for this matchup? Does it move the needle for you?

We now know the matchup for Ohio State in the upcoming Fort Myers tip-off this coming basketball season. It was previously announced that the Buckeyes, Florida, Cal, and Seton Hall would be the four teams in the event, but weren’t given any indication on which teams would face each other.

Until now.

According to the Fort Myers Tip-off’s website, Ohio State will matchup with the Seton Hall Pirates, leaving Cal and the Florida Gators to face each other in the other game within the Beach division, both on Nov. 22. The winners of those two games will then face each other in the championship game in primetime on Nov. 24.

There is also a Palms division that includes Southern Utah, Yale, Milwaukee, and Bowling Green. That is a separate bracket that will crown a separate champion. Ohio State will not play any of those four.

Official game times will be announced at a later date.

Ohio State has had some success against Seton Hall in the past. The two programs have matched up five times in the past with the Buckeyes winning three of them. OSU won in 1960, 1995, and 2002 and lost against the Pirates in 1992, and most recently in 2003 by a score of 75-59.

Ohio State basketball to play in Fort Myers Tip-Off in 2021

According to sources close to Jeff Goodman, Ohio State basketball will be playing in the Fort Myers Tip-Off in 2021.

It appears the Ohio State men’s basketball team will be heading to Southwest Florida to play in the Fort Myers Tip-Off in 2021. This, according to a report from basketball analyst Jeff Goodman.

Other teams taking part in the four-team field according to Goodman’s sources include Florida, Seton Hall, and California. Dates and the schedule of matchups will be announced at a later date, but the tournament is slated annually around late November.

This news makes the second non-conference event the basketball Bucks will be a part of in 2021. Already announced prior to this was their participation in the CBS Sports Classic that was renewed for another three years just last week.

Chris Holtmann has made a change in scheduling philosophy that Thad Matta often frowned upon. He has embraced playing in some of the preseason traveling tournaments, and this is just another example.
