Wisconsin vs. Notre Dame: Series history

Wisconsin vs. Notre Dame: Series history

Welcome to Notre Dame week.

Somehow it’s been nearly 57 years since the two midwest powerhouses squared off in competition, especially given Notre Dame’s independent status and need for competitive games each year.

But even though the two programs haven’t met on the field in decades, Saturday’s game will be full of compelling storylines:

  • Jack Coan’s first game against Wisconsin
  • Whether Graham Mertz can beat a good football team
  • Whether the Badgers’ Week 1 loss was an anomaly
  • How good is Wisconsin, and how good is Notre Dame?

A lot will be decided on the turf of Soldier Field in Chicago, Illinois on Saturday.

Before we get into the matchup, here’s a look at the history between the two schools:

Throwback Thursday: The last 10 Texas-Rice matchups

Rice has only defeated Texas one time since 1966.

As Texas prepares to face Rice in Week 3 of the 2021 college football season, let’s take a look at their most recent matchups.

As is the case for the last few decades, the Longhorns are expected to blow out the Owls in convincing fashion this year. The all-time series sits at 73-21-1 in favor of Texas.

Since 1966, Rice has only defeated Texas one time. It came in 1994, when the Longhorns traveled to Houston and fell to the Owls 19-17.

From 1930-1960, which was the only time rice was considered to have the slight edge over the Longhorns, the Owls recorded 17 of their 21 total wins over Texas.

The largest win between the two programs came in 1915, when Texas defeated Rice 59-0.

The Longhorns are currently on a win-streak dating back to 1995 and the two schools have faced off 95 times. It’s unlikely that Rice will break that streak this week.

Take a look at the last 10 matchups between the two programs:

Wisconsin vs. Eastern Michigan: Series history

Wisconsin vs. Eastern Michigan: Series history

The Wisconsin Badgers are set to move forward from their Week 1 loss to Penn State as they’ll welcome in the 1-0 Eastern Michigan Eagles to Camp Randall Stadium on Saturday.

The out-of-conference contest will be welcome for a Wisconsin team that struggled with basics on Saturday and, again, only were able to score 7 points on four trips inside the Penn State 10 yard line.

Eastern Michigan was projected to finish as one of the worst teams in the MAC, and are 1-0 thanks to a victory over St. Francis (PA).

The game should see drastic improvements from the offensive line, from Graham Mertz and from the team as a whole as they work to clean up the errors that lost them the game on Saturday.

Before we get into the matchup, here is a look at the series history between the two schools:

All-time record: 3-0 in favor of Penn State

Current win streak: 3 (Wisconsin)

Largest margin of victory: 56-0 (Wisconsin)

Longest win streak: 3 (Wisconsin)

Last matchup: 1996

Texas Football: Series history against Louisiana-Lafayette

This will be the third matchup between the two programs.

It’s officially game week in Austin, Texas.

The Longhorns will be beginning a new era with first-year head coach Steve Sarkisian and redshirt freshman quarterback Hudson Card.

The expectations for the 2021 season are as high as they’ve ever been, considering Sarkisian is one of the top offensive-minded coaches in the game. On top of that, the target on the Longhorns’ back got a tad bigger with their decision to move to greener pastures in the SEC.

No. 21 Texas will have to face No. 23 Louisiana-Lafayette in their season opener on Sept. 4. It marks the first ranked matchup the Longhorns will have since 1984. Billy Napier’s squad is full of experienced players and they’re fresh off of a 10-1 season in 2020, including a win against Iowa State.

In regards to the series history between the two programs, this will be the third time that Texas and Louisiana have played each other. In 2000, Mack Brown and the Longhorns defeated the Ragin’ Cajuns 52-10. In 2005, Texas defeated Louisiana 60-3.

Each matchup has served as the season and home opener for the Longhorns. If Texas is able to escape with a win, their season opener record will improve to 106-20-3. It would also give Sarkisian his seventh-straight win in a home opener.

The all-time game-by-game results between Penn State and Wisconsin

Penn State leads the all-time series with Wisconsin with a head-to-head record of 10-9 in their favor. Here’s a look back at the history of the series as we move closer to the start of the next game in the series this fall.

In 17 games, Iowa State has only prevailed three times, giving Texas a 14-3 series lead. All three wins have come in the past decade.

Texas’ series history against Iowa State is a short one, only playing 17 times.

One thing the Cyclones have never done is beat the Longhorns in back-to-back seasons. After hitting a game-winning field goal to win last year, Iowa State has an excellent shot to pull off the feat for the first time on Friday.

Between the current head coaches, Matt Campbell and Tom Herman, the latter holds a 2-1 advantage. However, this will be the most important matchup between the two schools. The winner will be in the driver’s seat to appear in the Big 12 championship game.

Overall, Iowa State has prevailed three times over the years, giving Texas a 14-3 series lead. All three wins have come in the past decade.

Texas Longhorns Football: Recent series history vs Kansas Jayhawks

Texas’ series history against Kansas has been rather lopsided. The Longhorns have a 7-1 record since the two began playing annually in 2012.

Texas’ series history against Kansas has been rather lopsided. The Jayhawks have three career victories against the Longhorns, with two of them coming before World War II began. The famous 2016 Kansas win still resignations in the mind of Texas fans to this day.

Not playing annually until the Big 12 conference dwindled down to 10 teams in 2012, Texas has a 7-1 record in those eight seasons. Despite the wins, all three head coaches in Mack Brown, Charlie Strong, and Tom Herman have had close calls throughout their times.

Second-year head coach Les Miles has struggled this season, winless to this point of the season. After nearly stealing one away in Austin last season, Miles will be looking to get Herman’s number this season.
