LSU’s Mikaylah Williams earns SEC Freshman of the Year honors

Mikaylah Williams has proven to be one of the most impactful additions for the Tigers this season.

While much of the offseason attention was placed on LSU’s transfer portal additions, arguably the most impactful new player on the team this season came via high school recruiting.

[autotag]Mikaylah Williams[/autotag] has been named the SEC Freshman of the Year after a fantastic first campaign with the Tigers. With [autotag]Angel Reese[/autotag] also being named the SEC Player of the Year, LSU becomes the first school to have players win both awards since South Carolina in 2015.

The top high school recruit in the country, Williams is averaging 14.9 points and 4.9 rebounds, with the headline being a 42-point showing against Kent State, the most points scored by an LSU freshman in the NCAA era.

She was, unsurprisingly, also named to the SEC All-Freshman Team along with [autotag]Aalyah Del Rosario[/autotag].

Angel Reese becomes LSU’s third winner of the award and the first since Sylvia Fowles in 2008.

LSU’s [autotag]Angel Reese[/autotag] has been named the SEC Player of the Year after once again leading the Tigers to a fantastic campaign.

Reese becomes the third LSU player to win the award after [autotag]Seimone Augustus[/autotag] (2005-06) and [autotag]Sylvia Fowles[/autotag] (2008). She was also named to the First Team All-SEC team by the league along with teammate [autotag]Aneesah Morrow[/autotag].

Reese led the SEC in scoring (19.1) and rebounding (13.0), becoming the first player to do so in back-to-back seasons since Vanderbilt’s Wendy Scholtens in 1989-90.

Reese has 20 double-doubles in the season, giving her 54 in her two-year LSU career. Though she’s eligible for the WNBA draft, the fourth-year junior has the opportunity to return to Baton Rouge for one more season if she chooses.

The Tigers have locked up the two seed in Greenville for the third year in a row.

LSU women’s basketball’s Angel Reese named SEC Co-Player of the Week

Angel Reese turned in two double-doubles in blowout wins last week.

[autotag]Angel Reese[/autotag] hasn’t missed a beat since returning to the court, and after a huge week in blowout wins over McNeese and Northwestern State, she’s been named the SEC Co-Player of the Week alongside Mississippi State’s Jessica Carter.

Reese turned in double-doubles in both wins this week, putting her at six on the season and 39 for her LSU career. In the win over McNeese — in which the Tigers set program records for points scored and margin of victory — she had a career-high six steals.

In addition to Reese being recognized, [autotag]Mikaylah Williams[/autotag] was also named the SEC Freshman of the Week as well as the National Freshman of the Week by the USBWA.
