Potential worries about the 2024 Detroit Lions: Kicking

The Lions have a kicker who’d never made a field goal in a game before 2024 in Jake Bates

The defending NFC North champion Detroit Lions were within a half of making the first Super Bowl in franchise history. Nearly all the key pieces from that 12-5 team return. GM Brad Holmes and his crew prominently addressed the two biggest weaknesses that held back the 2023 Lions: the pass coverage and pass rush.

It is a season full of boundless potential in Detroit. Yet all teams have some vulnerabilities, and next up in the series of potential pitfalls to the 2024 Lions season is arguably the biggest potential weakness on the entire roster.

[lawrence-related id=110996]

The kicker.

It’s certainly the most unproven spot on the Lions team. Wildly inexperienced Jake Bates won the role when record-setting holdover Michael Badgley was lost for the year with a hamstring injury.

Bates came to prominence with the UFL’s Michigan Panthers, who play their home dates in Ford Field. He hammered home the longest field goal in that building’s history in the Panthers’ opener in the spring of 2024.

The new kicker comes as a complete greenhorn. Bates didn’t kick field goals or extra points in college, starting out as a soccer player at Central Arkansas before handling kickoffs only at Texas State and Arkansas. The 64-yarder was the first successful field goal in Bates’ career at any level.

Bates’ inexperience has shown throughout the summer. He’s had some very good days in practice, no doubt about it. He also finished the summer season making just 80 percent of his extra point attempts in practices and three preseason games in a league where 95 percent is not considered good enough. Bates can boom the ball with exceedingly rare leg strength, but the control and consistency of contact are still very much works in progress. The two failed kickoffs in the final preseason game were both mis-hit attempts, which is something that rarely happens with more experienced kickers.

Coming off a season where Badgley was perfect on field goals and set the franchise record for longest postseason field goal, Bates has some big shoes to fill. The team, notably special teams coordinator Dave Fipp, loves his leg talent and potential.

Relying on such an inexperienced kicker is a major gamble for the Lions. Just for good measure, Detroit is also breaking in a new long snapper in undrafted rookie Hogan Hatten, too. Inexperienced doesn’t mean “bad”; it means “never done it before.”

Takeaways from Athlon Sports’ season preview for Oklahoma Sooners

Athlon Sports previewed Oklahoma’s 2024 season, focusing on reasons for optimism and concern.

The Oklahoma Sooners are still almost three months from beginning their first season in the [autotag]SEC[/autotag]. Year 3 under head coach [autotag]Brent Venables[/autotag] will be a crucial one, as OU tries to build upon a 10-3 record in 2023.

With the dog days of summer and the college football calendar upon us, Athlon Sports is doing season previews for multiple teams, including the Sooners.

In its Oklahoma Sooners preview, Athlon notes the Sooners haven’t won a conference title since 2020 after previously owning the Big 12. They also note OU hasn’t produced a first-team All-American since 2019.

But it wasn’t all criticism. The reemergence of defense in Norman and the talented wide receiver unit were cited as reasons for optimism. [autotag]Jackson Arnold[/autotag]’s obvious talent is a big plus as well.

In fact, according to the article, “Oklahoma’s big-picture transition — leaving the relative comfort of the Big 12 for the snake pit of the SEC — revolves around a more micro transition: Jackson Arnold’s growth at quarterback.”

Arnold holds the present and future of the program squarely on his shoulders. If he grows and becomes the star OU fans believe he could be, the Sooners could be poised for a great deal of success. If he isn’t developed properly, it could set Oklahoma back for years.

Athlon Sports also highlighted the retooled offensive line, falling in line with just about everyone else predicting 2024 for Oklahoma. With the pieces at the skill positions on offense, led by the talented wide receiver corps and running back [autotag]Gavin Sawchuk[/autotag], the offensive line will be a hinge point for the offense and the team overall.

While Athlon Sports had concerns about the offense, it was very complimentary of the defense. According to the article: “Eleven of the top 13 tacklers return, led by two first-team All-Big 12 performers in linebacker [autotag]Danny Stutsman[/autotag] and safety [autotag]Billy Bowman[/autotag]. Stutsman led the unit with 104 tackles, while Bowman’s six interceptions tied him for third nationally.”

Sooner fans have been fooled by heightened expectations for defenses quite a few times over the years, but OU might actually have the talent and coaching to make a return to high-level defense this year. Besides Stutsman and Bowman, [autotag]Damonic Williams[/autotag], [autotag]Woodi Washington[/autotag], [autotag]Peyton Bowen[/autotag] and [autotag]Ethan Downs[/autotag] will be players to watch out for on that side of the ball.

Overall, a bit of a mixed bag from Athlon Sports in its season preview, but Oklahoma was ranked No. 16 nationally in the article. Only time will tell if the national media is undervaluing Venables and the DNA of the program, or if OU fans are a bit too glass-half-full entering football’s most unforgiving conference.

5 looming questions ahead of the Jaguars’ 2023 season

Five questions the Jaguars will need to answer if they hope to make a Super Bowl run in 2023.

The Jacksonville Jaguars are runaway favorites to defend their AFC South title in 2023. Even the most skeptical experts can’t bring themselves to predict a losing record is on the way for the Jaguars.

Winning in the NFL is never a walk in the park, though.

For the Jaguars to make another trip to the playoffs and potentially make a Super Bowl run, there are a few answers the team will have to find along the way.

Here are five looming questions for the Jaguars with the regular season less than a week from kicking off:

Texas Longhorns Oklahoma’s toughest test on the 2023 schedule

Like every year, Texas comes in with a ton of hype. But this year feels different for the Longhorns. They’ll provide the biggest test of the season for the Sooners.

For nearly 120 years, the Oklahoma Sooners and the Texas Longhorns have been a part of the greatest rivalry in college football.

Last year’s game was a disaster.  Dillon Gabriel missed the game due to the concussion suffered in the first half of the TCU game, and Oklahoma had no passing game to speak of. The running game provided some moments, but not enough to keep the Sooners from getting shutout in the Red River Rivalry and suffering its worst loss to Texas in the history of the matchup.

The 49-0 beatdown in Dallas is something everyone would like to forget. This year, like just about every year, Texas comes in with a ton of hype.

But this year feels different for the Longhorns. I get wanting to wait and see because we’ve heard “Texas is back” for more than a decade without them actually being back.

This year it feels the excitement in Austin is warranted. Texas is ranked 19 in returning production, according to ESPN (ESPN+). The offense is returning 85% of his production from a year ago, which ranks third, and the defense is returning 63%, which ranks 68th in the nation.

Though they lost their top two running backs Bijan Robinson and Roschon Johnson, the Longhorns’ offense returns just about everyone.

They have one of the best-receiving groups in the nation, with Xavier Worthy, Jordan Whittington, transfer Adonai Mitchell, and Isaiah Neyor. They’ve also got one of the best tight ends in the country in Ja’Tavion Sanders.

Quinn Ewers was up and down but showed flashes during the year of why he was so highly thought of. But it should help to have one of the best offensive lines in the Big 12, if not the country.

Whether you like Steve Sarkisian or not, the guy knows how to coach an offense. It would not be surprising to see some packages for quarterback Maalik Murphy.

If they can figure out the running back position, watch out. We could be looking at one of the best offenses in the nation.

Defensively they are losing some solid players. They lose four of their top 10 leaders in tackles.

Most notable is the loss of linebacker Demarvion Overshown, now with the Dallas Cowboys. He was second in tackles last season with 96. He was also tied for second in tackles for loss with 10 and sacks with four.

Jaylan Ford helps to mitigate the loss. Ford was voted preseason Big Defensive Player of the Year by the media.

They’ll most likely replace Overshown with true freshman and the nation’s number one linebacker, Anthony Hill Jr.

They add transfer Jalen Catalon to their secondary, which should help if he can stay healthy. He was someone I really wanted to see in a Sooner jersey.

All in all, things are looking bright in Austin. If this isn’t the year they break through and win the conference, when will it be? If they don’t put things together and win only 7-8 games, Sark could find himself on the hot seat.

While I don’t think it’ll be like last year, I don’t think Oklahoma is far enough along to win this game. Even though I have them starting 5-0 heading into the Red River Showdown, this will be the one to see how real Oklahoma is.

Ultimately, Texas is just too much as we look at it in July.

Score Prediction: 38-27 Texas

Predicted Record: 5-1

2023 Baseball Season Preview: Second Basemen

Florida’s top options at second might be a transfer and a true freshman, but it’s still one of the team’s deeper positions heading into the 2023 season.

Florida didn’t lose its second baseman from 2022, but he did move to a different position, freeing up a spot for some new faces to compete over.

Last year, [autotag]Colby Halter[/autotag] held things down at second for most of the year but shifted to third base when [autotag]Deric Fabian[/autotag] was benched. Right fielder [autotag]Sterlin Thompson[/autotag] moved into the infield and held down second for the remainder of the year.

Over the offseason, Kevin O’Sullivan added infielder [autotag]Dale Thomas[/autotag] through the transfer portal and got true freshman [autotag]Cade Kurland[/autotag] a year early after reclassification. Both have looked sharp since joining the team, but there’s also Fabian to consider.

Much like first base, Florida might be figuring out who its starting second baseman is on a day-by-day basis. O’Sullivan has a lot of talent to manage, and the best answer might be to keep shuffling the players until something sticks.

Here’s a look at Florida’s options at second base.

The Orlando Magic already have promising returns from their decision to blow up their core at the 2020-21 trade deadline in Franz Wagner and Paolo Banchero. The team’s roster is filled with a lot of intriguing talent but it will likely still take them at least another year before they can start looking like a cohesive group.

Below is a preview of the upcoming 2022-23 Magic season.

1 question every NBA team will need to answer to have a successful 2022-23 season

Here are the biggest questions for every NBA team heading into this season

The NBA season is finally upon us and it’s never felt more unpredictable.

The parity the fans have been asking for for years is alive and well. It feels like well over half of the NBA’s teams are going to make a playoff push this season. They legitimately think they can compete and make some noise.

Of course, many of them will be wrong. That’s just how the NBA works. Not everyone can have a successful season — somebody has to fail.  And no team is perfect — there’s no “super team” out there ready to run through the league. There’s not a single team in the league that is without its warts. They all have questions.

If they can answer them? It’s probably a sign that their season is going well. If not? Maybe it’s time to think about going winless for Wembanyama. Maybe.

As for what those questions are, we’ve got the biggest one broken down for all 30 teams below. Enjoy.
