Referees call simultaneous horrible roughing the passer calls on Vikings, Panthers

The Vikings and Panthers were victimized by simultaneous horrible roughing the passer calls in two different games. Bravo, refs!

There’s no question that the putrid state of officiating is one of the top stories of the 2023 NFL season, and here we go again. On Sunday, virtually at the same time, the Minnesota Vikings and the Carolina Panthers were waylaid by roughing the passer calls that did not stand up to close inspection.

The penalty against the Vikings came with 9:17 left in the first half. Defensive lineman Patrick Jones II barely touched Detroit Lions quarterback Jared Goff, but Land Clark objected nonetheless. That turned second-and-26 into first-and-10, and game the Lions 15 extra yards.

The penalty against the Panthers happened with 8:44 left in the first half, when edge-rusher Yetur Gross-Matos was apparently a bit too rough with Green Bay Packers quarterback Jordan Love. Again, you’d love to see any evidence of actual roughing the passer here. That turned third-and-1 into first-and-10, and gave the Packers 15 bonus yards. Bravo, referee Alex Kemp.

You can see both “penalties” right here.

Vikings state of the roster: Edge rusher

The Minnesota Vikings traded Za’Darius Smith and signed Marcus Davenport to replace him. Will the production be the same in 2023?

The 2023 season is inching closer and closer by the day and we here at Vikings Wire are previewing the season from every angle. Today, we continue profiling the Minnesota Vikings roster on the defensive side of the football.

We are currently writing player profiles on each Viking on the roster with projections for what their 2023 season could look like. How things look projecting forward is where the real intrigue lies.

Leading up to training camp, we will be looking at each position from a more in-depth perspective. Today, we will be looking at the edge rushers.

5 under-the-radar Vikings players to watch on defense at training camp

As the Minnesota Vikings approach training camp, these five defensive players could make an impact while flying under-the-radar.

The Minnesota Vikings will see their rookies report to training camp on July 23rd with veterans reporting on July 25th. Training camp will be very interesting one for the Vikings this year, as it will be about building upon a 13-4 2022 season.

After a disastrous season under former defensive coordinator Ed Donatell, Kevin O’Connell handed the reins over to former Miami Dolphins head coach Brian Flores who brings a major culture shift on defense from conservative to incredibly aggressive.

Going into training camp, we identified five defensive players that are flying under the radar that could make some noise this August.

Vikings 90-man roster player profile: OLB Patrick Jones II

Over the next few weeks, we will be looking at each player on the roster in-depth with backgrounds and how they currently project forward on the Minnesota Vikings roster.

What is the best-case scenario? What is the worst-case scenario? What should we expect from them during the preseason and beyond? We will break all of that down here.

As a staff, all of us at Vikings Wire ranked the entire 90-man roster 1-90 and will be releasing player profiles in reverse order.

91 days until Vikings season opener: Every player to wear No. 91

With 91 days remaining until the season opener, we take a look at the best to wear the number for the Minnesota Vikings.

It’s the final countdown…

Well, sort of.

The Minnesota Vikings will kick off their 2023 regular season in 91 days at home against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sept. 10.

From now until then, we will take a trip down memory lane and count each day by revisiting the players that have worn that specific jersey number.

Edge rusher Patrick Jones II currently wears the number after changing from No. 93 last season. The number has switched hands over the years, but it will most likely be remembered for Ray Edwards, who wore it for five seasons.

With 91 days until kickoff, here’s a look at every player to wear No. 91 with the Vikings (via Pro Football Reference):

93 days until Vikings season opener: Every player to wear No. 93

The No. 93 holds a lot of history, including Hall of Famer John Randle, but who else has worn the number for the Vikings?

Jonathan Bullard currently holds the number for the Vikings and has worn it since last season. Edge rusher Patrick Jones II also wore the number briefly before switching to No. 91. However, the number is headlined by John Randle, a Hall of Famer who wore the number for 11 seasons.

6 recent high draft picks who need to step up for Vikings in 2023

If the Minnesota Vikings want to take a step forward in 2023, they will need their previous draft picks to step up.

After a 13-4 season ending in a wild card loss, the Minnesota Vikings saw some significant roster turnover this offseason. They moved on from veterans Adam Thielen and Eric Kendricks and lost Patrick Peterson and Dalvin Tomlinson in free agency.

They added multiple veterans in free agency, but championship teams are built through the NFL draft. If they want to take the next step, they will need their draft picks to make an impact in 2023.

Here are six recent top 100 picks that need to step up for the Vikings to take a step forward.

Vikings vs. Bears: 5 backups who stood out in Sunday’s win

The second team got some extended play on Sunday. Here are five of them who stood out.

Prior to Sunday’s game versus the Chicago Bears, there was an expectation that the Minnesota Vikings would pull their starters during the game and the Vikings did just that after halftime. Kirk Cousins hit wide receiver K.J. Osborn for a 66-yard connection on the teams’ opening drive and then followed that up with a touchdown to wide receiver Adam Thielen.

After going up 16-6 at the end of the first half, head coach Kevin O’Connell pulled his starters as the second half commenced. The decision allowed O’Connell to ensure his starters would stay healthy with the playoffs right around the corner, but it also allowed for the Vikings coaching staff to get a look at the backups.

Here’s a look at some of the backups who played today and how they fared.

Vikings initial Week 16 injury report is pretty clean

The injury report looks a lot better than it has in past weeks

The injury luck for the Minnesota Vikings might just be getting better after all. There were only four players on the initial injury report.

Center Garrett Bradbury did not practice after re-aggravating his back injury in a car crash on Saturday after the game against the Indianapolis Colts.

The linebacking corps is hit the hardest, as both Brian Asamoah (ankle) and Eric Kendricks (hip) were both limited.

Patrick Jones II is back practicing in full after missing Saturday’s game with an illness.

One thing to watch as the week progresses: Cameron Dantzler dressed, but didn’t play a single snap on Saturday. Until we hear further information on Dantzler, it’s something to keep an eye on.

Vikings inactives vs. Colts led by Garrett Bradbury

Bradbury will miss his second-consecutive game

The Minnesota Vikings had four players listed as questionable heading into Saturday’s game against the Indianapolis Colts. One of those players won’t be playing, as center Garrett Bradbury will miss his second-consecutive game with a back injury.

Outside linebacker Danielle Hunter and safety Harrison Smith will both play, as will cornerback Cameron Dantzler. The Vikings activated cornerback Parry Nickerson from the practice squad this week just in case Dantzler was unable to go. Because he is able to play, Nickerson is inactive.

Joining him on the inactive list are cornerback Kalon Barnes who the Vikings just signed this week, defensive lineman Ross Blacklock and outside linebacker Patrick Jones II. Jones II was added to the injury report on Thursday with an illness and it is keeping him out of the game on Saturday.
