5 takeaways from Colts’ preseason win over Lions

Takeaways from the Colts’ preseason finale.

The Indianapolis Colts’ final preseason game played like the fourth game on the previous preseason schedule because both teams didn’t play a majority of their starters.

The backend of the roster showed they had some fight as they had to make another comeback for the third week in a row to leave with the win. Indianapolis finished undefeated in the preseason for the first time since 1994.

There wasn’t much that will carry into the regular season but there are some things to consider as Chris Ballard figures out his final 53-man roster.

Here are five takeaways from the preseason finale:

The Indianapolis Colts have their final preseason game before the 2021 regular season on Friday as they head to Ford Field to visit the Detroit Lions.

While the starters won’t be playing in this game, there are still a number of players battling for roster spots and bigger roles for the final time before rosters are trimmed down to 53 players, which will be by Tuesday afternoon.

These Colts are on the roster bubble entering the preseason finale.

With the Indianapolis Colts concluding training camp 2021 at the Grand Park Sports Campus in Westfield, they have one final preseason game to go against the Detroit Lions.

More importantly, the team has one more opportunity for fringe roster players to impress and earn a role going forward, be that on the active roster or the practice squad.

Head coach Frank Reich said Wednesday that the team will not play starters this game, which provides even more opportunity and snaps for roster bubble players.

Here, we’ll take a look at five players who are on the bubble entering the preseason finale:

Julién Davenport establishing himself amid Colts LT battle

Amid the Colts LT battle, Julién Davenport seems to have the edge.

The Indianapolis Colts are still waiting on starting left tackle Eric Fisher to return from the PUP list after undergoing offseason Achilles surgery, but it seems Julién Davenport has emerged as the favorite to start in the meantime.

Though the battle hasn’t been all that inspiring in terms of finding a suitable backup to Fisher, it was Davenport who separated himself from the competition during the team’s second preseason game against the Minnesota Vikings.

Head coach Frank Reich told reporters on Wednesday that Davenport is the frontrunner for the spot until Fisher returns.

“Those guys have gotten a ton of reps. Julién (Davenport) has come in and done a good job,” Reich said Wednesday. “All of the guys have done well, I think Julién has established himself there at the left tackle position, but we feel good about the other guys that have been repping out there as well. Right now I’d say Julién has that edge there and so we feel great about the depth there.”

With the starters sitting the preseason finale, it will be interesting to see if the Colts will continue to give Davenport reps. If he doesn’t play at all, it’s fair to assume he will be the starter in Week 1 if Fisher isn’t ready to go. The same can still be true if he winds up getting reps in the finale against the Detroit Lions as well.

The Colts have to make final roster cuts on Tuesday, Aug. 31 but if this trend keeps up, it will be Davenport who has the edge at left tackle until Fisher returns.

The Indianapolis Colts came away with a 12-10 win over the Minnesota Vikings but given that this is the preseason, the focus is more on individual performances rather than the outcome of the game.

Despite the offense struggling to find the end zone, there were still a few encouraging players from Saturday night’s win. On the flip side, there were also some players who didn’t quite live up to expectations.
