12 free agents Giants could target based on coaching hires

These 12 free agents could become free agent targets of the New York Giants based on their offseason coaching and coordinator hires.

The New York Giants significantly overhauled their coaching staff this offseason, changing two of their three coordinators while also switching out a multitude of assistant coaches.

Because of those changes, the team will need to readjust their personnel by way of free agency and the 2024 NFL draft in an effort to match talent with the new schemes.

As a reminder, here are the notable coaching changes:

  • Defensive coordinator, Shane Bowen
  • Special teams coordinator, Michael Ghobrial
  • Running backs coach, Joel Thomas
  • Offensive line coach, Carmen Bricillo
  • Tight ends coach, Tim Kelly

These new arrivals create an interesting dynamic headed into free agency. They are intimately familiar with several of the available players and have developed trust with them over the years.

While that doesn’t necessarily mean any or all of them will be signed by the Giants, there is likely to be some crossover.

Here is a look at 12 impending free agents the Giants could target based on the above coaching changes/hires.

Titans’ top-20 cap hits going into the 2024 offseason

The Titans’ top-20 cap hits for 2024 ahead of free agency.

After an offseason in which the Tennessee Titans had limited funds to work with, the team is now loaded with cap space going into the 2024 offseason.

According to Over the Cap, the Titans have $68.1 million to work with, which is the second-most in the NFL behind only the Washington Commanders.

The Titans will be able to open up even more cap space if they decide to cut some players who are under contract. We recently went over who some of the biggest candidates are that fit the bill.

When it comes to Tennessee’s biggest cap hits for 2024, four of the players in the top 20 are pending free agents who still count against the cap because of void years added to their contracts.

Of course, this list will change once free agency comes and goes, but for now this is the list of the Titans’ top-20 cap hits going into the offseason.

Around the North: Steelers expected to pursue QB Ryan Tannehill

The Steelers are expected to try and reunite a former quarterback and offensive coordinator duo.

In other news around the AFC North, the Pittsburgh Steelers are expected to bring in solid competition for former first rounder Kenny Pickett after an abysmal sophomore season. Reportedly, the Steelers have their eye on former Miami Dolphins and Tennessee Titans quarterback Ryan Tannehill.

Mason Rudolph looked like the best quarterback in Pittsburgh last year, and now there are rumors that he would like a fresh start away from the Steelers next season as well. If the Steelers were to make a move for Tannehill, it could be presumed he would be favored as the starting quarterback entering the 2024 season.

This comes after the Steelers hired the recently fired head coach of the Atlanta Falcons, Arthur Smith as their new offensive coordinator. Tannehill and Smith, of course, worked together for his best seasons in the NFL with the Titans. That time has come and gone, however, and Tannehill is now three years older and less mobile.

Not settled with Pickett, the Steelers seem to be looking elsewhere.

Steelers expected to explore adding Ryan Tannehill in free agency

The Steelers are expected to explore adding pending free agent QB Ryan Tannehill in free agency.

With the Tennessee Titans and quarterback Ryan Tannehill set to part ways as the veteran signal-caller becomes a free agent this offseason, there is at least one team expected to be interested in his services.

According to NFL Network reporters Mike Garafolo, Tom Pelissero and Ian Rapoport, the Pittsburgh Steelers are expected to explore adding Tannehill in free agency.

With new offensive coordinator Arthur Smith, the expectation is Pittsburgh will explore adding free agent Ryan Tannehill, who had his best years with the Titans while Smith was the OC there.

Tannehill saw his job taken by rookie quarterback Will Levis in 2023 after he suffered an injury, and he has made it quite clear he doesn’t plan on being back in Nashville in 2024.

Tannehill was sensational over his first two years with the Titans while playing under former offensive coordinator Arthur Smith, who is now Pittsburgh’s play-caller after being fired by the Atlanta Falcons.

But things went off the rails in his final two years with the team.

Granted, he didn’t play as well as he did in the three years prior, but it wasn’t completely Tannehill’s fault. Not only was Tennessee’s offensive line one of the worst in the league in that span, the team also lacked pass-catchers.

The interest between Tannehill and the Steelers will likely be mutual. After all, the Steelers need an insurance policy for Kenny Pickett, and Tannehill will be looking for a place that offers him a chance to start.

Having Smith there will only make the Steelers more intriguing for Tannehill. He would be entering a similar situation to the one he had with the Titans in 2019, when he was brought in as an insurance policy for Marcus Mariota before ultimately taking the job and reviving the franchise.

The 35-year-old’s stock has certainly taken a hit over the last two years, but he can bounce back in the right situation.

Report: Steelers to target Ryan Tannehill in free agency

If the Steelers target a free agent quarterback, Ryan Tannehill makes perfect sense.

Quarterback is the top priority of the Pittsburgh Steelers this offseason so it only makes sense that even with Kenny Pickett in the fold, we expect the front office to bring in some competition. The free agent we thought would be the best fit is former Tennessee Titans quarterback Ryan Tannehill and now according to Mike Garofolo, Tom Pelissero and Ian Rapoport, so do the Steelers.

According to the trio, the expectation is with new offensive coordinator Arthur Smith having a history with Tannehill that he will be a serious consideration.

With new offensive coordinator Arthur Smith, the expectation is Pittsburgh will explore adding free agent Ryan Tannehill, who had his best years with the Titans while Smith was the OC there.

Smith was the offensive coordinator of the Titans for two seasons and during those two seasons, Tannehill was great and even won Comeback Player of the Year. With the premium being paid to top quarterbacks, Tannehill might be a nice balance between what a guy like Kirk Cousins will demand and re-signing Mason Rudolph.

Even if Pickett is the long-term answer, Tannehill knows this offense better and would give the Steelers a better chance to win now. In addition, Tannehill has shown he is willing to mentor young quarterbacks which could be helpful beyond the 2024 season.

Is Ryan Tannehill the answer at QB for the Steelers?

Ryan Tannehill is a pending free agent and is a perfect fit for the Steelers’ new offense.

The biggest question for the Pittsburgh Steelers this offseason is how to improve the quarterback position. Mason Rudolph finished the season strong after replacing Kenny Pickett but is set to hit free agency. So what is next?

With the addition of offensive coordinator Arthur Smith, all options are on the table. The team has Pickett, who is the incumbent starter and a former first-round pick, as well as veteran Mitch Trubisky. But what about a different veteran who knows Smith’s offense well and has excelled in it?

Tennessee Titans quarterback Ryan Tannehill is a pending free agent. He had his best seasons with Smith as his offensive coordinator in Tennessee. In 2019, Smith’s first season as OC, Tannehill came to the Titans from the Dolphins and won Comeback Player of the Year. He was even better in 2020, but when Smith left in 2021, Tannehill’s production dropped after the Titans offensive line fell apart.

A reunion with Smith could be just what Tannehill and the Steelers need. Tannehill is a perfect fit for what Smith likes to do, and he would have a load of skill-position players around him. It would be a perfect bridge signing for Pickett.

Tennessee Titans 2024 offseason preview: Quarterback

We take a look at the Titans’ situation at quarterback going into the 2024 offseason and what they should do.

The Tennessee Titans saw a changing of the guard at the quarterback spot in 2023, with rookie signal-caller Will Levis taking the reins of the starting job from veteran Ryan Tannehill.

Despite a terrible offensive line and a poor receiving corps., the second-round pick posted some impressive performances and showed more than enough for the Titans to move forward with him as their franchise quarterback.

Now, it’s all about surrounding Levis with the pieces necessary in free agency and the draft in order to put him in the best possible position to continue to develop and succeed.

The first thing was to hire an offensive-minded head coach who has a more modern approach — and the Titans did just that with the hiring of Brian Callahan, who has stressed the importance of a good passing game.

Adding to that, he has a ton of experience working with quarterbacks, both young and old, and Callahan will be the play-caller, also, which means the Titans won’t have to worry about getting their guy poached.

Having a franchise quarterback in tow is a huge piece of the puzzle the Titans have, but that doesn’t mean they don’t have some work to do at the position this offseason.

Here’s a look at which Titans quarterbacks are under contract, pending free agents, and what the team’s biggest needs are at the position.

5 Titans make PFF’s list of the top 100 free agents for 2024

A total of five Titans players made Pro Football Focus’ list of the top 100 free agents of 2024.

While the Tennessee Titans are coming off a disappointing 2023 season, the team is set to have some free agents who will certainly garner interest, whether that be from the team, around the league, or both.

In a recent list put together by Pro Football Focus’ Brad Spielberger that ranks the top 100 free agents slated to hit the open market in 2024, five Titans made the cut.

The list of Titans includes running back Derrick Henry, defensive lineman Denico Autry, quarterback Ryan Tannehill, linebacker Azeez Al-Shaair and center Aaron Brewer.

Defensive lineman Teair Tart was also included on the list, but of course, he’s now a member of the Houston Texans after Tennessee waived him, so he’s no longer a Titans free agent.

Two Titans players we thought could make the list but didn’t were cornerbacks Kristian Fulton and Sean Murphy-Bunting.

Granted, Fulton has injury concerns and is coming off a terrible season, but he’s still only 25 and has shown in the past he can be an impact player. SMB was the bigger surprise after putting together a solid campaign.

Here’s a look at where Spielberger ranked every Titan on the list and what he had to say about each. We’ll also provide some thoughts for each player.

Best Photos: Top Aggie performances from Week 18 of the NFL season

Texas A&M was well represented in Week 18 of the NFL, and we have some of the best photos for you to check out

The regular season is complete, and the post-season picture is clear. As we look forward to the playoffs, I’d like to take some time to recognize a few top week 18 performances from Aggies in the NFL.

Donovan Wilson Has been coming on nicely after a bit of a slow start to the season. He had another solid game and notched his second straight game with a timely interception. His play helped the Cowboys blow out the Washington Commanders, securing the NFC #2 seed and home-field advantage to start the playoffs.

  • 5 tackles / 1 interception / 1 PD

Miami rookie running back De’Von Achane didn’t fill the stat sheet, but they still have a few dynamic runs and averaged over five yards a carry. He completed the season just shy of 1,000 scrimmage yards and 11 touchdowns. The Dolphins did not get the win, but they will still be in the playoffs.

  • 56 yards / 5.6 average / 1 touchdown

For the first time this season, Ryan Tannehill makes the list. He spent the back half of the season as a backup to Will Levis, but an injury put him back in the starting lineup, which likely were his last few games in Tennessee.

  • 65.4 completion % / 168 yards / 2 touchdowns

Another great week for these former Aggies, and you can check out some of the best photos from week 18.

10 free agent quarterbacks Broncos could consider in 2024

Here are 10 free agent quarterbacks the Broncos could consider this spring.

After benching quarterback Russell Wilson, the Denver Broncos turned their offense over to Jarrett Stidham for the final two games of the 2023 season.

Stidham didn’t look any better than Wilson, but he is cheaper. The Broncos are expected to release Wilson in March. Stidham’s future is less certain.

Stidham is scheduled to have a $7 million salary cap hit in 2024. It’s possible that Denver might opt to go into next season with Stidham and a rookie (the Broncos hold the 12th overall pick in the draft).

Alternatively, Denver could release Stidham and save $5 million in cap space. With that saved cap space, the Broncos might be able to afford a bargain free agent QB this spring such as Jameis Winston or Gardner Minshew.

It will come down to how much faith coach Sean Payton has in Stidham. After signing him last spring, Payton saw Stidham in training camp and practice all season leading up to the QB’s two starts in 2023. If the coach isn’t confident in Stidham going forward, the Broncos might be able to find an upgrade in free agency this spring.

Keeping in mind that Denver could pair a veteran with a rookie this offseason, here’s a quick look at the ten most notable QBs set to become free agents in March.
