Ryan Tannehill confirms he won’t be back with Titans, jokes he almost ‘went rogue’

Ryan Tannehill made it quite clear he won’t be with the Titans next season, which was expected.

Following a 28-20 win over the Jacksonville Jaguars in the season finale on Sunday, Tennessee Titans quarterback Ryan Tannehill made it quite clear his days with the team are over.

Fittingly, Tannehill got the start in front of the home crowd in place of an injured Will Levis and played well en route to a win that also knocked the Jaguars out of playoff contention.

When asked about his future with the team after the game, Tannehill was clear he won’t be back next year, which was fully expected.

“I understand the business side of things and, obviously, we all know what happened this year. So, it doesn’t take a whole lot of foresight to see that (I won’t be back),” Tannehill said, per Paul Kuharsky.

“It was a fun day,” he added, per Buck Reising of AtoZ Sports. “It was a fun day for a lot of different reasons, but to be able to finish the season out, finish my time out here with a win, was a lot of fun and felt really good.”

Tannehill hilariously admitted that he almost “went rouge” in order to help wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins get his incentives, saying, “I’m out anyway. I’ve got nothing to lose,” per Sam Phalen of AtoZ Sports.

Tannehill ended up helping Hopkins reach two of the three he was in striking distance for, which netted the veteran wideout an extra $500,000.

I know there have been some very painful moments during his time with the Titans, especially in the playoffs.

But Tannehill took this team out of the muck in 2019 and helped propel the Titans to a three-year run that was among one of the most fun in franchise history. He also finishes as the second-best quarterback in the Titans era.

His time here should be remembered fondly.

Titans QB Will Levis ruled out for Week 18

Thankfully, Titans QB Will Levis has been ruled out for Week 18.

Tennessee Titans quarterback Will Levis has played his last snap of the 2023 campaign.

Titans head coach Mike Vrabel announced on Friday afternoon that Levis, who is dealing with a foot injury suffered in last week’s loss to the Houston Texans, has been ruled out for Week 18 against the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Taking his place will be quarterback Ryan Tannehill. This will be the veteran’s last start with the Titans as he prepares to move on in 2024.

This was always the most likely decision, as not only was Levis banged-up, he also would have had to play behind a putrid offensive line that can’t be relied upon to keep him upright and healthy.

And so ends Levis’ rookie campaign, which was no doubt a success. The second-round pick showed more than enough flashes for the Titans to be certain about wanting to build around him moving forward.

Now, it’ll be up to Vrabel and general manager Ran Carthon to improve the offensive line and receiving corps. in order to put Levis in the best possible position to succeed.

It remains to be seen if they’ll actually be able to do that, but the Titans will have plenty of cap space and a high draft pick to help their cause.

5 Titans players who could cause problems for the Jaguars in Week 18

Will Sunday be the last time the Jaguars have to deal with a Derrick Henry-led Titans squad?

After nearly a full month of losses, the Jacksonville Jaguars finally got back in the win column in Week 17. And if things go as planned, they’d add one final win when they travel to Nashville this week.

Jacksonville and Tennessee already played once this season in Week 11, and the Titans never stood a chance. But Tennessee head coach Mike Vrabel and his team never go down without a fight.

The Titans would surely love to hand the Jaguars a season-ruining loss in the final week of the regular season, and Vrabel will likely have his players ready to play Sunday.

Here are five Titans players who could cause problems for the Jaguars in Week 18:

Ryan Tannehill acknowledges Week 18 game is likely his last with Titans

Based on his comments, Ryan Tannehill knows his time with the Titans is coming to an end.

When the Tennessee Titans take the field for the final game of the regular season in Week 18, it will almost certainly be the last contest quarterback Ryan Tannehill plays in the two-tone blue.

It was always thought that Tannehill would play his final season with the Titans this year, but that fate was sealed once Tennessee drafted Will Levis, who went on to take the starting job from Tannehill while he was injured.

But before Tannehill heads out the door, he’ll likely get one more start, as Levis looks set to sit out in Week 18 due to a foot injury.

When asked about possibly getting the start on Sunday, Tannehill gave an answer that made it clear he doesn’t expect to be here next season.

“I spent five years of my life here in this organization,” Tannehill said, per Jim Wyatt. “A lot of great people. I would love to be able to leave it on a win.”

When asked to clarify what he meant with the last sentence, Tannehill replied, “The season. My time here. The season.”

Tannehill went on to say he realizes this could be it for him in Tennessee but said he isn’t focused on looking at the past but rather on being ready to start the final game of the season.

“Having the chance of playing helps me stay focused,” Tannehill said. “I’m sure if I was just kind of sitting around I’d have a little more time. But having the chance to play, keeping my focus on that, I’m trying to prepare myself if need be to be ready to go.”

“(But) I definitely realize that (this could be it) and have the thoughts. I don’t fully sit and reflect on the last five years at this time. The time will come, and I’ll definitely do that. But right now, I think I’d be letting down my teammates by letting too much thought into that and not preparing myself to go play.”

This isn’t the first time Tannehill has spoken like a guy who knows he’s on his way out.

After the Week 17 game in which he took five sacks, the veteran signal-caller was brutally honest about the pass protection, admitting there were plays where he had no chance.

He also compared himself to “John Wick at the end of the movie,” a reference to how battered and bruised he’s been over the years due to protection issues that have regularly plagued the offensive line.

Those are things Tannehill would’ve never said if he thought there was any chance he’d stick around.

While there were playoff disappointments during Tannehill’s tenure, he did do a lot for this franchise over his five seasons. He deserves a warm send-off from the home crowd — and I think he’ll get it.

Titans’ Ryan Tannehill will start in Week 18 if Will Levis doesn’t play

The Titans will start Ryan Tannehill in Week 18 if Will Levis can’t go.

The status of Tennessee Titans rookie quarterback Will Levis is once again up in the air in Week 18 after he suffered a foot injury in the Week 17 loss against the Houston Texans.

Tennessee should absolutely sit Levis, even if he’s healthy enough to play, as the offensive line simply can’t be trusted to keep him out of harm’s way, as we saw in Sunday’s loss.

When asked about Levis’ status on Tuesday, head coach Mike Vrabel said he wasn’t sure if Levis would be able to go and the team would see how things play out during the week.

He did reveal, however, that Ryan Tannehill would start if the Kentucky product doesn’t suit up.

If Tannehill does indeed get the ball, he’ll be making what is almost certainly his last start in the two-tone blue, and it’ll come at Nissan Stadium, giving fans the chance to send him off.

Sure, the playoff struggles have been a stain on his tenure, but Tannehill far exceeded expectations overall and did a lot to lift this franchise out of the muck upon taking over in 2019.

He deserves a positive goodbye, no matter the outcome of the game.

Tennessee going with Tannehill is yet another bad sign for Willis. The fact that the Titans didn’t even give him a look down the stretch with Levis not playing says a lot about how little they think of him.

Titans’ Ryan Tannehill brutally honest about pass protection in Week 17

Titans QB Ryan Tannehill was brutally honest about the pass protection in Week 17 and also compared himself to John Wick.

The Tennessee Titans suffered their 11th loss of the 2023 campaign in Week 17 for many of the same reasons they lost their previous 10.

The offense once again failed to generate much of anything, with the Titans scoring just three points the entire game. Tennessee did make one trip into the red zone but were thwarted on fourth down to end the drive.

A big reason for the offensive struggles was pass protection, as has been the case all season long.

Quarterbacks Will Levis and Ryan Tannehill were sacked a total of six times, with Tannehill taking five of them. The lone sack on Levis ended his day after he suffered a foot injury.

After the game, Tannehill showed he’s just about at the end of his rope with the poor pass protection, something that has been an issue for much of his tenure in Nashville.

When asked if there were some plays he didn’t have a chance, the veteran signal-caller, who played better than last week but got no help from his offensive line, was brutally honest.

“Yeah, definitely,” he answered, per Paul Kuharsky.

Tannehill is no stranger to poor pass protection upfront, as it’s been an issue for much of his tenure in Nashville. He had a perfect way to encapsulate his time in Tennessee, which is likely coming to an end after this season:

“I feel like John Wick at the end of the movie,” Tannehill said, according to Jim Wyatt.

Where Titans QB Ryan Tannehill ranked analytically in Week 16

Titans QB Ryan Tannehill had a massive drop-off in air yards per attempt as compared to QB Will Levis.

With rookie quarterback Will Levis out with an ankle injury, the Tennessee Titans were forced to give the reins back to veteran quarterback Ryan Tannehill last Sunday.

This was the chance for Tannehill to not only prove that the Titans made the wrong decision by benching him, but a solid outing would’ve undoubtedly raised his stock heading into free agency this spring.

Unfortunately for him, he did neither of those things. In fact, you could argue that the complete opposite occurred, and the Titans got reassurance that they made the right choice while Tannehill’s personal stock plummeted further.

To say that the Texas A&M product had an uninspiring performance would be putting it mildly. This wasn’t the worst game of his season or anything of that nature, but it surely wasn’t anything to write home about, either.

Tannehill finished with 152 yards passing and made several unacceptable mistakes in the process for any quarterback, let alone a 12-year veteran.

Unsurprisingly, his numbers analytically reflect the underwhelming performance, with Tannehill ranking in the bottom half of the league in nearly every category, per RBSDM.

One of the most notable drop-offs came in air yards. One week after Levis led the NFL with 15.0 per attempt, Tannehill ranked near the bottom of the league, failing to crack even five air yards per attempt.

Because of this safe approach, his completion percentage ended up being among the best in the league for the week, but when a quarterback is only averaging a smidge more than four yards in the air on each pass, I would certainly hope he’s at least completing a high rate of throws.

Now, let’s take a look at where Tanne ranked at the conclusion of Week 16, which could very well be his last start in the two-tone blue.

6 things to know about the Seahawks and Titans going into Sunday’s game

Here are six things to know about these two teams heading into their early matchup on Christmas Eve.

The Seahawks are visiting the Titans this week for another 10:00 a.m. West Coast time kickoff. Seattle is fresh off an invigorating and crucial win over the Eagles on Monday Night Football. Meanwhile, Tennessee has been eliminated from the playoff picture and won’t be 100% come Sunday.

Here are six things to know about these two teams heading into their early matchup on Christmas Eve.

Titans had 14 players sit out practice on Wednesday

Luck finally seems to be turning around for the Seahawks.

After a string of humiliating losses against some of the top teams in the NFL, luck finally seems to be turning around for the Seahawks. On Monday night they pulled off an improbably upset over the Eagles, keeping their playoff hopes a live and inspiring a new wave of confidence around the building, as DK Metcalf put it when he spoke to reporters yesterday.

There’s good reason, too as the last three opponents on Seattle’s regular season schedule are all in disarray right now. The Cardinals are 3-10, the Steelers played Mason Rudolph on Sunday and the Titans appear to be severely limited by injuries going into this week. At yesterday’s practice Tennessee had 14 players who did not participate, including rookie quarterback Will Levis. Here’s thre full list, per their injury report.

QB Will Levis – ankle
DT Jeffrey Simmons – knee
G Daniel Brunskill – ankle
C Aaron Brewer – ankle
WR Treylon Burks – illness
LB Jack Gibbens – back
LB Luke Gifford – hamstring
S Amani Hooker – knee
DL TK McClendon – shoulder
CB Sean Murphy-Bunting – hip
WR Kyle Philips – hamstring
S K’Von Wallace – quad
TE Trevon Wesco – shin
WR Nick Westbrook-Ikhine – hand

Levis’ injury is a high ankle sprain he suffered just a few days ago, so he will most likely be sitting out this week. Head coach Mike Vrabel told the media yesterday that Ryan Tannehill will start if Levis can’t go. Tannehill has given the Seahawks trouble in the past, but he hasn’t been effective as a quarterback for a few seasons now.

The real x-factor for this game may be Tennessee’s weakest link, which is their offensive line. The Seahawks pass rush has made a habit of feasting on bad lines this season, racking up a ton of sacks and hits against the Giants, Panthers and Cardinals. If that dynamic comes into play again, it’ll be really hard for the Titans to hold a lead.

Titans QB Ryan Tannehill talks possibility of starting in Week 16

Titans QB Ryan Tannehill admitted the transition to backup hasn’t been an easy one, but he’s tried to be an asset however he can.

Just 10 weeks after suffering an ankle injury that ended up costing him his starting job, Tennessee Titans quarterback Ryan Tannehill is facing the possibility of temporarily getting his old job back in Week 16.

Fellow signal-caller Will Levis suffered what is reportedly a high-ankle sprain in the Week 15 loss to the Houston Texans, leaving his status up in the air. If he can’t go, head coach Mike Vrabel says Tannehill will get the nod.

“I’m just taking it a day at a time right now, figuring out what is going on while also getting myself ready to play,” Tannehill said, per John Glennon of Nashville Post. “Obviously you try to prepare as a starter every week. But in a week like this week, it’s a little more intense, just trying to make sure I’m on top of everything.”

The transition to backup wasn’t an easy one for Tannehill, who admitted it was “a growing opportunity” for him.

“Yeah, it’s a challenge, right?” Tannehill said. “You get your job taken basically and your first instinct is not a positive one. So yeah, it’s been a growing opportunity for me to put my own feelings aside and try to be an asset to this team, continue to work and be a positive impact on this team.”

As far as Tannehill being an asset while serving as the backup is concerned, Levis praised him for the help he’s provided in getting the rookie ready for games.

In fact, Levis even labeled Tannehill as a “mentor” to him.

“He’s been a heck of a mentor, heck of a leader, heck of a teammate throughout all of it,” Levis said of Tannehill, per Kayla Anderson of 104.5 The Zone. “And, really, a coach, too. In the meeting room, especially, with how he’s able to go through how he sees things and how he could see things potentially play out with multiple pieces of the game plan or multiple reads or just tips that I could definitely point to that helped transition into Sundays. So, I’ve got to thank him a lot for that.”

If Tannehill indeed gets the start on Sunday, it will be 62nd of his tenure with the Titans, but it may also be his last, with the veteran signal-caller set to hit free agency in 2024.

“Yeah, I just want to go out and — if I have the opportunity — play well and try to get a win,” Tannehill said.
